I think the spell combat re-write is a huge change to this, so it is no longer a major issue. There are 2 reasons for this.
1. the ability to reduce your attack to get a bonus means that if you want to cast a spell you will get it off, and the attack will just be an afterthought that may be a bonus.
2. If you are not in a position where the opponent can not take an AoO you no longer are forced to make the concentration check.
3. If your AC is high enough and/or you trust to luck, let them take AoO anyways. You aren't an armored mage for nothing.
I'm excited about the ability to gain the AC benefits of Combat Expertise while casting a spell.

That's what sylas said he'd risk with proper ac, luck, desperation or willingness to pull stunts.
