Not sure I get the countdown.
Heya - if I owe my more reasonable liberal friends an apology for generalizing, I offer one. Please note, I hate generalizations and feel like conservatives are on the receiving end of them more than anyone else. Here at Paizo, over on FB, etc, I feel a distinct level of vitriol, which leads me to oversimplifying some statements whenI don't personally know the folk I am talking to. Some of my liberal friends over at FB have heard the redundant caveat that I use 'liberals' to mean the media, rabid party-first partisans and Democrat leadership, and not necesarily everyone living at center.
But there's no way for you fine folk to know that, so I humbly apoligize.
Only salient point is that Palin is not a moron, and that liberals in the news consistently paint conservatives as dumb. Whatever they accomplish and whatever terms they might use to cloak the insult, they continually call them dumb or not intellectually curious or whatever. It grows tiresome.

Actually, i think the real meat of the matter is alot of conservative opinion pieces come off as mildy to extremely anti intellectual in tone and wording. So that looks like someone is not includent to think. And i think both sides of the isle are fundementally incorrect. Governmental power is incompatible with individual freedoms both to choose your own lifestyle that is not harming other individuals, and to keep money honestly earned. I note both sides as haveing convictions racked up in corruption scandals at abouth an even rate.

You have to be really careful about that word "anti-intellectual". A lot of what passes for "intellectual" in college - particularly in the social sciences (political science, for example) isn't "intellectual" at all. United States colleges were hurt back in the 60s when a bunch of liberals dodged the draft by going to school. It resulted in a lot of confusion as to what is political and what is academic - the whole farce of postmodernism is a good example of this.

When the HELL did this become a serious discussion?
It started out as one European guy posting a mildly funny audio clip of an American politician making a slip of the tongue on the radio. Somehow, it ended up as a liberals versus conservatives pissing match.
These forums are where I come to talk to my friends about our common interests, to learn new things, and to blow off steam when my home life gets to be too much. I'm sure I speak for a lot of people when I say that this s~@# has got to go. We're sick of having to look at people's arguments when we want to spend some quality internet time with good folks.
You want to butt heads with someone, go find a goat. Or maybe a brick wall. I know you're all decent human beings, but I am SICK of all of this political dick-waving that's been going on in the OTD forums. It needs to stop. Now.

Grrr... You can split infinitives in English. You can't do it in Latin, and that was why it was suggested grammarians avoid such usage in English, for some reason. That this has become a de facto rule of English aggravates me to no end.
Hehe. Yeah, well, I also ended my sentence with a preposition. I'm such a rebel.

Both sides also dodged the draft by joining the national guard or moving to Canada or Australia.... see Mel Gibson above (in fairness he was way to young to be drafted... but his father was worried it would happen).
Its funny watching from the outside .... You have the Conservatives squealing like stuck pigs every time somebody calls them dumb yet the are more than happy to label the "liberals" traitorous and un-American.
The Conservatives have all the resources of the major news networks behind them such as FOX and they can go to town on peoples reputations...
Then you have your "Liberals" spluttering about like frogs on crack unable to do jack in office because they paralysed by the fear of upsetting people.
They make the conservative rhetoric true because they don't have the guts to be as ruthless as the conservatives were when they were in government.
The same in Australia the Left flounce around they don't refute the critics in the strongest terms and they don't get the message of what they are trying to do across strongly enough.
Lack of strength of conviction is the problem...

I certainly didn't mean to imply that. Nor have I meant to imply that liberals are more likely to be traitors or un-American. The fact is that there was a huge swing to the political left which found its roots in this era - we ended up with "minority studies" programs, confusion between political and academic studies, postmodern mental masturbation, etc. This was a problem because -academics- took a back seat to politics. The social sciences are now just starting to recover from it.

Ignoring the personal attack (really, *I'm* -not- the topic of this thread), I agree with MM's statement giving more respect to those who went to jail in protest of the Vietnam war.
The ability to protest is central to democracy - without which it can't function - it is duty of citizenry. Running away is not the same thing as protesting.

I have cute kids. Ranging from adorable to smoking. It's a freaking nightmare. I don't recommend it. You can't stay mad at them, you can't let your guard down, and you have to get back in shape because one day, a boy will have to die, and close work doesn't leave GSR.
I think people take jokes like the OP to heart ebcasue a lot of us conservatives are tired of the ad hominem repertoire. Maybe the OP didn't mean it to be anything more than an amusing single event, and certainly there are bad egg conservatives trhat don't contribute to worthwhile dialogue. But on tv, in movies, on discussion thread, and unfortunately the floor of the Capitol Dome, conservatives are routeinly called dumb and have their smallest mistakes blown out of proportion. Media aversion to the 57 states comment is just one example. It gets more serious.
And I agree that sometimes conservatives can come off as non0eggheads. The problem I ahve with that is that around the center-left, heavily influenced by the entertainment industry, fails to recognize that they are real people and not groomed, nuanced liars. I hope no Republican candidate ever resembles John Kerry in terms of arrogance or polished deceit, but I'd like to see the country recognize you can be smart and have commonality with the rest of us instead of having to be some Hollywood-crafted statesman who actually has no clue what he's talking about (Gore, Biden, Kerry, Obama).

The fact is that there are plenty of liberals holding political positions for moronic reasons as well.
Morons exist on both sides of that political line. There are also groomed, nuanced liars on both sides - Fox news is a good example on the Conservative side.

I think it's a bit more tricky than that. While I feel that the comments I heard about Bristol on Dancing with the Stars went way over the line, she wouldn't have been on that show if not for her mom. So, it's like they're supposed to get it both ways. Many other politicians keep their kids out of the limelight, but the Palins have a reality show? I mean, go one way or the other with this - stop trying to sit on the fence. Palin wants us to see her as a family mom, but we shouldn't look at her family?
If anybody is responsible for this, it is the Palin family who put themselves in the limelight.I'd rather the focus be exclusively on Sarah and everyone else be ignored.

I think you make a valid point, but all politicians kids are out there to some degree in this day and age. I think we need to make a real effort to leave minor children out of the political blood letting. If we scrutinize every government employee's kid's facebook traffic and personal e-mails I'm sure we could find ways to attack them, but I think this is a very bad bad thing. I'm sure it will come down to this habit of attacking a candidates kids in our current political environment, but I wish it were otherwise.

So, I don't think it's the same thing. However, I do agree that minor kids should be kept out of the limelight - and that starts with the politician keeping them out of the limelight.

My fellow Americans in all 57 states, the time has changed for come. With our country founded more than 20 centuries ago, we have much to celebrate – from the FBI’s 100 days to the reforms that bring greater inefficiencies to our health care system. We know that countries like Europe are willing to stand with us in our fight to halt the rise of privacy, and Israel is a strong friend of Israel’s. And let’s face it, everybody knows that it makes no sense that you send a kid to the emergency room for a treatable illness like asthma and they end up taking up a hospital bed. It costs, when, if you, they just gave, you gave them treatment early, and they got some treatment, and ah, a breathalyzer, or an inhalator. I mean, not a breathalyzer, ah, I don’t know what the term is in Austrian for that…
Seems there's plenty of precedent for stupidity in our politicians...

The children of public figures are off limits. Anyone who forgets that should be unilaterally ostracized. Sadly, we're going to go further down that road I guarantee it.
I think it is funny, discussing politics on a web forum where everything is made contentious. These people can argue for hundreds of posts about something like "Charisma affecting appearance"... how could we hope to have any conversation of substance about politics?

So true that the GOP doesn't have anyone who could be perceived in the same way (*cough* Reagan, Palin, W *cough*). Agreed.
I never understood how anyone could see ANY of those people as trustworthy. These are people who have the means and desire to become president. It is not possible for a decent, respectable, non-celebrity person to do that. (and Reagan is the only truly "hollywood crafted" one. Memories are short.)
If you think that your guys are different from the other guys in any way other than a very narrow section of policiy and a lot of lofty rhetoric, you need to look closer at your own party. These people are politicians. That they claim to hate politicians does not make them less so. This goes equally for either party. (I'm registered indep)
Read their policies, try to outguess their lies, and at the end of the day, pull the level for the lesser evil. What more can a person do? Well, I guess you can fantasize the existence of honest politicians. But don't choose that and then call others foolish.

I think US will be further polarised by their politics until somebody truly talented comes along (I don't see anybody left or right with the skills or talent or lack of tarnish waiting in the wings)... sadly the amount of cash and compromise required to become president makes it more difficult for this to happen. You will probably have another decade or two of mediocre to infective government before you get somebody who can change things.
