They're fun... but so far no increase to my vocabulary. I thought you were going for obscure words :)

I've been going down the list and posting the definition of each, alphabetically, on my facebook status. I do one per day, in the morning. I'm currently at benison.

I thought this was going to be about words to describe players in various RPGs. One of my favourites is "High Dreamers" for those playing characters who can use magic in the wonderful French RPG Rêve de Dragon (published in English as The Dream : Ourouboros)

The Exchange

post for checking later.

If I'm ever at a loss for what to say, I just throw my hands into the air and shout "Batman!" and the game seems to roll smoothly from there.

While going through the words above and checking each in the dictionary I was particularly struck by cyclopean. I had presumed it was pretty much the most straightforward meaning, essentially just having the characteristics of a cyclops (presumably strictly one from Greek Myth). Turns out that it also means a kind of stone work found in the ancient world. Basically large unworked stones loosely fitted together with no use of motar.

Yeah, and it was HP Lovecraft's favorite word, though he really stretched the definition, using it to describe something ancient and ominous.

Cool list.

I was always fond of defenestrate. Particularly in urban adventures.

Thanks for all the kind comments! I really enjoy creating these lists. On that subject, I've posted some more - this time all from the latest Conan story that I'm reading.

As once agin it's Thursday, I've posted some more cool words for gamers to my blog. You can see the latest words here. Happy holidays everyone!

Good word! I've added it to next weeks list!

More cool words (including enscrolled!) for gamers are up on my blog! Enjoy!

How about 'Cathedra' for a throne?

'Dyad' for a pair?

'Chthonian' for something you really don't want to meet.

'Enervate' to weaken?

'Supercallifragilisticexpeallidocious' for... Wait, wrong place.

I'm not sure dicelicious is a real word! That said, I've got some new words up. If you've ever had a burning desire to know what "flummery" means, now is the time to find out!

Hmmm...

It's harbinger. Not harbringer.

And how can such a list exist without "Cimmerian" and "Plutonian?" Both words for "black," "shadowy," "deep darkness," etc.

Shadow Lodge

Interesting list. Ditto Bruunwald, though. Some of the spellings should probably be checked before posting. Calllimastian, for example. Still, I'll definitely be pulling some of these for use in games, and some for use in real life. :)

I do check the spellings, but lots of these don't appear in spell checkers which makes errors inevitable. It's also possible, given that I'm using the UK spelling of these words that slight differences m result from that.

A few years ago I wrote up the Clark Ashton Smith Vocabulary Builder, a list of all the words and senses of words I had not encountered before when reading Zothique. There's also a number of other odd old words in the sidebar of my old blog. Feel free to grab them for your own lists.
