do you think it might be possible to add a "reserve hit points" number?
I use a system where regular hit points can be recovered with reserves, there are reserve hit points. The reserve hit points have a maximum too. and then when there is healing of hit points over and above regular hit points, the reserve hit points are replenished.

Would it be possible to add in an option for reserve hit points?

Well, I guess I'll have to finde another way then :)

If you’re comfortable with such things, you can create a NTFS Junction to your Dropbox folder from the data folder Combat Manager uses.

If you’re not, you can just wait for Kyle to update things =)

I'll actually try out a folder sync software to sync my RPG Folder on my NAS with a folder on my netbook (so I have all the files with me when I'm not playing at home). I'll try this software to sync both Combatmanager-Directories to my NAS and see what happens. :) I'll post a link if it works sice you could use this to sync the folder to a dropbox folder too!

This is a brilliant idea. If anyone wants to try this, I can give you Scott's email, home phone, work phone, home address and girlfriend's phone. Feel free to bug him 24 hours a day, he doesn't sleep.

I'm going to switch topics, and I'm going to be totally selfish. I would love for there to be a docking/undocking window that has an interactive (meaning you can click it forward or backward day by day, week by week, month my month, and or year by year, depending on your needs) Golarion Calendar that shows the weather season (fall, winter, etc.) and holidays & festivals.

I know that is totally selfish, may not even fit with everyone else's needs, and might be super difficult to code, but I could REALLY use the heck out of it in a couple of my groups.

In case you were going to think about adding it to your "to do at some point" list, I have some web resources that might make your coding a bit easier. Or not, but here they are either way. :)

Golarion Calendar

Wiki Calendar Reference

Holidays and Festivals from the Pathfinder Wiki

Absalom Reckoning reference from Pathfinder Wiki

Also if there is already a software utility out there like what I'm requesting, just point me in that direction and I'll use it. The reason I'm asking for it for Combat Manager is that I can pick what day the adventuring team is currently on, and it will save with the combat manager. Then I can click it forward when a day passes, and be able to keep track of my different groups by saving different combat manager states.

Edit: Just noticed that Examinator asked for something similar to this, and that you said it would probably get done eventually. So just consider this my "bump" of that request.

Just an fyi, when using the monster advancer putting the half-dragon template on something is causing it to gain two bite attacks and only 1 claw.

I've suggested the notion in passing once or twice as well. Would love to have a way to customize the calendar any way I want. Occult Entertainment has a program called DM Secretary that has a calendaring function built in, but the program is unstable, or at least I have found it to be so. Also I used to have, before the last hardware crash at home, an Excel sheet that you could enter month and holiday and moon data, as I remember, and it would build monthly sheets of the calendars.

Yeah, I did a bit of searching before I came here to request. There are a couple different utilities out there, but nothing that really works the way I would ideally want it to. Since I know Kyle is a programming genius, I figured I'd ask. Worst thing that happens is he says, "no." ;) I also know that Kyle is very interactive with his users, and if enough people request something, he'll definitely think about it. That's what makes him the coolest programmer I know. :P (How's that for buttering up?)

Kyle, I created a C# "calendar" control a while back where you can customize the days of week, days in a month, number of months, etc. if you are interested.

Go ahead and send it. I don't know if it will fit, but it's certainly worth a look.

Just a quick note about some bugs and some ideas regarding the initiative window:
1. The "hide names" Option will not hide names of grouped (i.e. initiative grouped) monsters. It will hide the Name of the "main" Monster though. The grouped monsters shouldn't be shown at all in this view.

2. It would be nice to have the "hide names" option to replace every monsters name with a different letter or something (instead of just ??????).

I thought I edited my last entry... anyway: It would also be cool to have the current round number on the players initiative window. :)

And could you add a button to show/hide all Monsters at once? Maybe even set the hide state for monsters that I add from the list. Otherwise my players would see that I'm preparing a fight by adding new monsters to the list ;)

I was running into this myself last Saturday. I think "Add Monsters Hidden" as a checkbox/option might handle the problem.

Love the program so far, tried to do similar thing in excel but it wasnt working out. This is really a life-saver.

Do you have any plans to include a Character Traits function?

Is there a way to add variants such as a Yellow Musk Zombie Template to the Monster Advancer?

Also im confused how to incorporate the spells onto a pc so that i can highlight and read the spell as in some of the pregenerated examples. I would also like to see a system to keep track of spells per day, perhaps an extension of the actions and attacks.

Customizing weapon entries would help too, and writing in classes and variants builds to automatically apply abilities gained at levels, (and also thus a level tracker) would help. I dont know how much this would conflict with the monster builder format, but there are slight differneces in building monsters versus pcs and making a system buch like ur monster advancer that could just add class levels to something would streamline character creation. And if you cant tell i love having hte option to customize everything...

As it is its a wonderful tool for lots of things, but u definatly have the potential to make it a standalone all inclusive utility that i would pay good money for.

Kyle Olson wrote:

A button to "show all" would be helpfull at this point to. Or even better: A button that opens up a new window like the heal/damage window where all monsters are listed with a checkbox for their hide status!

Anyway, I fell like I haven't said this in a while and it's time to do so again: This is a really great app and I can't wait to see some new features! You're doing a great work and I personally think that you're one of a few persons who actually change the way how many people experience this game!

Silverjdt wrote:

I also have tried to incorporate the spells in this way using combat manager... I too would love to be able to generate a PC, and select spells that can later be highlighted for a description of the spell.

Kyle, I'm still having these weird issues where *intermittently* when I use Combat Manager I won't be able to use the pulldown menus because they'll spawn behind the Combat Manager window.

Not sure if this is related to the fact that I have multiple windows open when I open CM or not, but it's a bit strange.

I am just a little curious about how the iPad version is coming along?

I was planning on an Alpha this week, but I wasn't able to run a test at my game on Saturday so I couldn't tell how close I was. I'm out of town this week but will try to get some more work done. Probably an alpha within the next 10 days, assuming I can be sure that I have enough working to make it worthwhile.

Hi, Kyle,

I just started looking into Combat Manager, and I can already say definitively that I'll be using it for the campaign. But I have to ask two questions for which I'll apologize in advance if they're already documented somewhere that I was unable to find...

Does Combat Manager support PF Word Magic? I haven't seen anything in the UI to indicate that it does. My group is excited to try this variant system from the Ultimate Magic book.

Also, speaking of variants, does the UI support custom fields? I'm thinking of pairing Word Magic with some sort of mana point system, but I don't want to have to keep track of all that in the "Notes" on a given monster.

Finally, a suggestion: you could create a note icon on the monster's row to both indicate that it has a note and to provide a single-click means of accessing it.

Thanks!

If there was a Google+ +1 button on the website, I'd totally click it.

I'm just sayin'.

If you Google "Google +1 button" you should be able to find an extension for Firefox & Chrome that lets you +1 any site.

Edit:
HERE is the link for the Chrome extension.

Hello there,

I am starting to use Combat Manager in my games (great app by the way Kyle, you are a badass!), and wanted to use PCGen characters in it.

I didn't notice you could just open a rprpg file directly in the combat tab, so i created a custom sheet for PCGen to create a Combat Manager custom data file(cmx).

I am sharing it here. It has some bugs, specialy in the Spells area and other fields that parse the text to show links to the rules, but in general its more complete than the default rprpg import.

To use it, save the csheet_impl.cmx file in your \PCGen\PCGen5164\outputsheets\d20\fantasy\text folder. It will show in the options to export your characters to a text sheet in the menu File\Export\...To Text.

To use the generated file go to Combat Manager\Import Custom Data select the file, and the character will apear in the custom "monsters" selection.

Hope it will be of use to someone.

Can't wait for the iPad version.

I just tried copying over a 5th lvl Paladin/7th Holy Vindicator to CM but the HV did not show up (nor spells). I created them on pcgen; it appears that the character just became a lvl 13 paladin as far as Cm is concerned. So I take it the newest books (APG, UC, UM)are not supported by CM yet along with pcgen spells?

Send a copy of the file to combatman@kyleolson.com. I've got a bit of a backlog of parsing issues to fix, but hopefully I can get to this soon.

The spells from APG, UC and UM are in the app.

Will do. Anything on the pcgen spell list, was it me or CM/PCGEN?

****file sent****

Neither Ultimate Magic or Combat have yet been added to PCGen's regular distribution. The APG has with the last two beta's though.

version 78(alpha) has them

Lazy bum that I am, I haven't read the whole thread (even though its barely over 1000 posts). It's not unlikely my question has been asked before. But here goes:

What about porting this to Android? This would be great on Android tablets!

Potentially eventually. I've got a Fire here. The problem is that while Monotouch allows me to copy all of the core components, I have to rewrite the rest of the UI for Android.

That would be awesome, and save me from having to rewrite it myself. :P

If you need testing on that, I'd love to be involved. I'm an Android developer (on tablets specifically) so I know my way around the sdk tools, and I have access to a variety of tablets I could test it on (my personal device is a Fire). I would even be willing to help with development, if you were comfortable letting someone else work with your code.

I've also been considering writing a character manager for Android. Nothing as fancy as PC-Gen or HeroLab, but something that would store all the information a character sheet would, and let you quickly reference things like spells and feats. I would like to include the ability to export characters for your app to use. Would that just be a matter of outputting the data in the right XML form?

Thanks again for this app; it's by far the best RPG tool I've ever used.

So, I'm guessing this next update is going to be awesome.

Like it will teleport me and my players to a strange world where a pint sized red garbed individual gives us strange riddles and we have to fight a villain with an a symmetrical hat.

That would be awesome! You think you could make that happen?

So, would it be possible to get updates for the NPC and monster files independent of a new release? I have gotten so use to convenience of having them already done for me, it is jarring to have to actual enter information or manually add two whole numbers together.

And yes, this may be the laziest request I have ever made. Loved the addition of quick dice, though! Combined with the text dice, it has made the application even more awesome and all-in-one than before!

I've thought about doing this, but I don't have the right setup for it yet. It's on my mind.

Alpha testers needed. If you have an iPad, send an email to combatman@kyleolson.com with info about what type of iPad you have (iPad 1/iPad 2, 16 GB/64 GB, 3G AT&T/3G Verizon/Wifi) and I will arbitrarily choose some or all of you (depending on the response level) to send a test build and some point in the near future, probably using TestFlight. Warning: Alpha build may be brutal.

Kyle, I used the program for the first time in-game in my Carrion Crown campaign this past saturday, and it worked perfectly. I really like that all of the AP villains are available in the program.

Thank you. This is a great program.

Hey Kyle,

I have been one of the hopeful mac owners who have asked for an OSX version a couple of times.

I have now done the awefull thing of bootcamping my mac so I can run your beautiful program. I love it and I have closely followed the updates and beening more and more envious that i did not have windows but now that I do i have used it for 2 sessions and one thing i noticed was the "randomness" of the diceroller

I like math and it seems the randomizer is the standard type, there is no True random in it. This makes the amount of crits and fumble much more common than my players experience. I can almost guarantee that i get a "1" after a crit.

I know that a math program called "R" and I have seen an iphone app who used an algorithm that came very close to true random. Have you considered this at all or is it just nerdy people like me who thinks this is important?

I swear this is just confirmation bias. I use the C# random number generator and it's pretty darn psuedo-random. It's not cryptographically secure, but it should be better than you need. It's always possible that there's an error with what I'm doing, but I don't think there is.

Am I missing something, or Ouflank doesn't exist in the feats database?

I agree it is missing from the db. You can however manually add it to the system with the New/Customize functionality Kyle has delivered.

Some Random gotchas

The Random class isn't thread safe.
If you call Random Rnd = new Random(); in a loop or method, you'll get the same number back because it uses the system clock as the seed and the number of Ticks hasn't changed. simple Sleep(2) usually fixes things

I don't call the Random from another thread, and I create one Random object and use it for all the die rolls. I've certainly made the "new Random()" mistake in the past, but not here.
