New to Pathfinder

Advice

Hello everyone,

This is my first post and I hope I'm putting this in the right place. After a break from 3.5 I heard about Pathfinder at my local gaming store and, after thumbing through the Core Rulebook, I picked it up. I am hooked! What a fascinating revivication of the rules!

That said, I am turning in circles trying to figure out what books I should pick up next. Being on a limited budget (aren't most of us?) I wish I could pick up all of them at once and place a huge order. However, I can only do a couple at a time.

So please, community, what would be your recommended order of books to purchase? I would like to get more rules and core books first and then move to campaign information and adventure paths (if those are the new modules I'm used to from my D&D days) next.

Thanks!

Welcome to the boards, Kahuna. I hope that you enjoy your stay.

First off, Welcome!

If you are a player the core book is all you really need. Although the new Advanced Players Guide is pretty good.

If you are a DM then the Bestiary and GM Screen are both great. And the GameMastery Guide has lots of info that is useful to any DM.

Here is a LINK to all of the items that are out there for the core RPG. If you want to get into the campaign world of Golarion there are a lot of other choices.

In terms of books, the Bestiary is a solid choice. Every game needs monsters. That is also the only other 'Core' book besides the main rulebook.

After that it depends on preference. If you like lots of options, you cant go wrong with the Advanced Players Guide.

If you like setting material (golarion) there is a host of products to dig into and we would probably need more info from you to really give good advice there. Keep in mind that though mostly flavor, all the setting materials have crunch (rules) as well.

After that there a bunch of great adventure paths and modules built for pathfinder by paizo and others available here on this site, so it depends on your preference and what kind of game you want to run.

There are also a bunch of great 3rd party products for those who might want to add to their gaming options on a budget. I highly recommend Super Genius Games for quality options that come in small easily digested chunks.

Thank you guys for the warm welcome and good advice on the Core Books. I don't want to bore you guys with questions that are perhaps answered elsewhere, but I do have one I'm struggling with. I am interested in jumping right into Golarion as well but in my bit of research I am having trouble finding the Campaign Guide. It looks like it's only available in PDF and even Amazon only has it from secondary vendors for unrealistic prices. Is it already out of print?

I would wait until early 2011 to buy the Pathfinderized version of the Campaign Guide. Until then use the outstanding resource of Pathfinder Wiki. Welcome on board! I am new myself.

Yup, a revised, more region specific Setting Book is coming. In the meantime, the PDF of the setting for 3.5 Rules is really excellent. A companion "Oriental Adventures" book is coming out also in the coming Year, if I remember correctly, along with an accompanying AP.

So welcome aboard! Now, where are the cookies?

Let me also welcome you to the wonderful world of Paizo and the Pathfinder RPG!!!

Nothing else to add really - the advice given here is all pretty spot on!

Welcome To The Boards!

All I can do is point out a website, Pathfinder.Wikia.Com that you can browse around for info on the Pathfinder campaign world, Golarion.

I visited the pathfinder wiki as a couple of you suggested and wow, that is a good wealth of material. I also appreciate the books that you good folks have directed me towards. I just picked up the Bestiary during my lunch hour and will take a look at the Gamemastering and Advanced Players Guides next. I used to be the DM/GM for our group and I can see that if this is going to get off the ground in my town it's going to be up to me again.

Once more I thank you all for the advice and guidance.
