James,

Question from a ninja player. How many ki points are ninjas allowed to spend a round for abilities? Is it like being a wizard where you can only cast one spell a round, so a ninja can only use one ninja trick a round? Or are you allowed to use multiple ninja tricks that take up different kinds of actions (swift, standard, etc).

Same as for a monk or rogue, whatever that would be.
I have no idea. I haven't found anything that gives specifics.

Monk/Ninja Ki abilities do not have a hard limit like a Wizard with spells, instead, the limit is based on the actions of the character. For instance, many Ki abilities are tied to Swift Actions, though some are tied to other actions.

As an example, a Monk could spend 1 Ki Point as a Swift Action to add a +4 Dodge bonus to his AC, spend 2 Ki Points as a Standard Action to heal himself with Wholeness of Body, then spend another 2 Ki Points as a move action to Abundant Step away.

The Ninja is much the same way, except nearly every ability is tied to swift actions.

As for the Warpriest Iconic, Jason announced during the Know-Direction Podcast for the second round of the ACG playtest that the Warpriest Iconic is a Male Half-Orc of Gorum. I'm fairly certain he mentioned it a couple of times in the Warpriest threads as well. He stated the reason that the Warpriest is a Male Half-Orc is that all of the other 'priestly types' are females and they wanted to change it up a bit.

He also announced that with the release of the Advanced Class Guide, all of the core races would have both a male and female iconic.

Bulmahn released that information in a Know Direction podcast. I am not certain which one. This one I think.

Looking for input on how to properly pronounce Asmodeus and Baphomet.

1) Az-moh-day-us, or As-mo-dius? I've been saying the former.

2) Baf-oh-met, or Bap-ah-met?

Did you ever hear of the rather atmospheric film, "Another Earth"? Sci Fi geeks don't talk about it much, as it doesn't have the usual mix of big boobs and big explosions, but ti was a winner at the Sundance festival. I'd place it in the same category as "Moon", save for the utter lack of tech gadgets.

1) I've been looking at some of the more obscure gods; would you say that Fandarra's favored weapon in Pathfinder should be a dagger, rather than a 'stone dagger', and that Ketephys' favored weapon should be a longbow, rather than a 'bow'? And Minderhal is listed as having 'hammer' as his favored weapon...would you update that to warhammer, as I believe you said for some of the dwarven deities that had 'hammer' listed as a favored weapon in Dwarves of Golarion?

2) For evil or neutral deities that get the Glory domain, given that three of the spells it grants have the good descriptor (holy smite, holy sword, and holy aura), do you think we're due for a modified Glory domain for less righteous gods, much like there's a modified Death domain for Pharasmins?

3) Should the above modified Death domain also be applied to good deities and demigods who grant the Death domain? In particular thinking of the empyreal lords Dammerich and Lythertida...not sure about Fandarra, given her taste for the old ways and blood sacrifice...

James,

How much does the legend of Ahriman/Angra Mainyu from Zoroastrianism inform Zon-Kuthon? Ahriman's role as lord of darkness fits in well given his role in Nidal. But the role of an opposite/sibling in Ahura Mazda seems more in line with Sarenrae as a sun goddess. Or did this even inform the setting at all?

It was discussed in the Know Direction interview with Jason about the ACG, if I recall.

Also, I should ask a question. Is there any chance of ever seeing the outline or an excerpt of the outline for an AP? I'm curious to see what they look like.

Which Golarion deities would you consider lesser/intermediate/greater for the purposes of the contact other plane spell?

Scarab Sages

When the Herald Kohar descended to give Gormuz a final warning, Mythic Realms says he was overpowered and slain, spurring Sarenrae to over-react and loose the Spawn of Rovagug by causing the Pit to open. However in the Court of the Fallen entry in the same book, it said his corpse fell into the magma pool at the bottom of the pit. Did Kohar's corpse somehow survive the world altering slashy slash of Sarenrae's scimitar, then fall into the newly opened pit, or did the servants of Rovagug move him into the depths and toss him into the pit that Festering Ulunaut (the 1st spawn) had dug out beneath the city?

@xavier c:
One of my players took Divine Source:

Spoiler:
They party had just got done slaying *hundreds* of vanilla by-the-book kobolds before they jumped off to the Astral Plane for some of their mythic trials. When they returned (days later in the Astral, weeks in the Material), the newly divine sorcerer now was a god worshiped by the kobold survivors and their kin as the Lady of Fireballs.

1) Fandarra's favored weapon is indeed a stone dagger—obsidian makes for the best there. And Ketephys's favored weapon is the bow, but longbow works fine as well, and is more accurate. Minderhal's should indeed be a warhammer.

2) Nope. A neutral cleric can cast good spells... they just need to moderate them. The reason the Death domain causes problems for Pharasma worshipers isn't because there's evil spells in there—it's because there's undead creation in there and that's a holdover from 3rd edition that I wish we would have excised.

3) That's not a bad house rule, but I think it would have been better for us to realize that giving the Death domain to good deities wasn't a great idea.

Well... since I designed the initial chase rules and worked on the deck, I'm kind of biased. I like them, in any event.

If you want to give players "creative agency" then you can just say "how do YOU want to overcome this card's obstacle?" and let them pick the skill check and then ad hoc assign a DC. But frankly... I think that WAY overcomplicates things. Chases are supposed to be fast-paced, and allowing players to pick and choose to that extent slows things down tremendously. Furthermore, chases are about impromptu and sudden obstacles and hard choices, and limiting each point in the chase to two options helps to carry that across.

Not a lot, directly at least. Zon-Kuthon's primary inspiration was the writings of Clive Barker, who of course draws HEAVILY from real world ancient mythology for his writing. In my homebrew, there was no Shelyn and no such relationship with Zon-Kuthon—that was something Mike McArtor added, and I'm relatively sure he didn't utilize real-world mythology to inspire him but just made that element up.

Not really. We don't have a place to show them off, and the outlines themselves are about 15,000 to 20,000 words, so they're hardly small enough to just "post to a board" or the like. Furthermore, there's a certain element of house style and "trade secrets" in them that I'm not all that comfortable making public. It's not really all that much that someone can't infer by dissecting and studying our APs... but still... for the same reason we don't share our Excel stat block generator, we don't share our internal outline documents.

As indicated via the asterisk on the table for that spell, all golarion deities are intermediate deities. In Golarion, you don't use the lesser or greater deity lines, and I argued to have those two lines cut from the spell as a result, but back in that day we were WAY too timid about changing things.

His corpse was not destroyed by the formation of the pit and fell into it after it was formed.

Questions:

1) What are some good references for Mesopotamian mythology? Any free/cheap ones out there for a poor college student? ;)

2) Same as 1 above but for mesoamerican mythology?

3) Who are your top 3 favorite teachers or professors and why? How did they influence you?

4) What is the biggest difference between your personality now and your personality as an adolescent?

5) If alignment was real, do you think yours has shifted at all during your lifetime? Or had it remained constant?

6) Is there anybody at paizo who you think has or admits to having an evil alignment? No names necessary of course. Feel free to ignore this question if it's too invasive.

1) I'd start with Wikipedia and go from there. I'm interested in the mythologies, but not to the extent that I'm SUPER familiar with them or own lots of books about them.

2) Same as #1 above.

3) My father—I took Chemistry, Physics, and Ecology classes from him in High School, and his integrety and passion for what he taught inspired me as both a student and a son.

Spencer Brooks—My 5th grade teacher. Who, among other things, introduced me to and taught me how to play Dungeons & Dragons.

Kevin Roddy—My favorite professor from college. He taught numerous medieval studies courses, and was super energetic and friendly and funny and no matter how big his lectures grew, he knew everyone's name by the 2nd class it seemed.

4) wow... Unusual question! I guess the biggest difference is that I'm more worldy and open-minded about other people. Growing up in a small town, even a very liberal and accepting one like Point Arena, doesn't give you a lot of chances to interact with a diverse culture like going to one of California's largest colleges or moving to one of the most diverse cities on the west coast does.

5) I'd like to say it's chaotic good, but it's probably closer to neutral good.

6) Nope.

I just completed the epic Anniversary Edition of Rise of the Runelords! This was my first AP, and it was a blast! Is it odd that I feel so proud and accomplished for defeating a fictional Runelord?

I'm brainstorming character ideas for my next adventure: Curse of the Crimson Throne. I've got Korvosa's back, and Gaedren Lamm doesn't stand a chance! I don't want to set a precedent of "Hey James please make my character", so here's my question:

The RotR AE Player's Guide had awesome "Character Tips" section that I found super-helpful. It had 5 bolded subsections of guidance to make your character fit the setting, prove useful in the campaign, and help your party survive the harrowing adventures. If you organized a similar character tips section for a CotCT players' guide, what would you put in these bolded subsections as tips for making characters?

He gave it away on his interview with Know Direction, though I'm almost positive that he said the iconic was a Male Half-Orc Warpriest of Gozreh, not Gorum.

1) Well, I'm honestly more concerned about the evil deities/demigods/whatever who grant the Glory domain...of the ones I know of, we've got Damerrich (LG), General Susumu (LE), Gorum (CN), Iomedae (LG), Jaidz (NG), Osolmyr (NE), Quindiovatos (LE), Rubicante (LE), Saranrae (NG), Shizuru (LG), and Uruskreil (LE) that grant it. Five good, one neutral, five evil. Seems a bit problematic to me that almost half the gods offering it as a domain can't actually allow their followers to prepare a third of the spells they get from a domain they offer...then again, maybe the deities should have their domains altered instead of creating an 'evil-friendly' Glory domain?

2) Does the number of domains a deity offers suggest their power? For example, I know most full deities have five domains (unless you're Nyarlathotep and weird and offer quantum domains), but does a deity having only two or three suggest they're a demigod or even a quasideity? I noticed some of the racial deities only offer two or three, as well as the elemental lords...is that because they're weaker, or just them being really hyperfocused?

3) This might be more of a Wes question, but I thought I'd see if you knew: In the first Bestiary, under the devil entry, in a similar location to where archons and azatas list empyreal lords and demons list demon lords, there's a list of 'Known Devils' that suggests the following names are 'Diabolical Lords'. Of the ones listed, three are archdevils, one is a malbranche, and the other six (Astaroth, Prince of Accusers; Glasya-Labolas, Author of Bloodshed; Nahemah, the Dowager of Divinations; Orobas, Speaker of Truths; Xaphan, Who Burns the Heavens, and Zagan, the Golden Blooded) are, to my knowledge, unknown entities. Do you know if they're supposed to be infernal dukes, malebranche, and other such that have yet to make an appearance (like many of the empyreal lords), if they're supposed to be important, but not necessarily demigod-level devils, or if they're simply a collection of flashy names that haven't had anything done with them yet to inspire DMs?

In most media there are bells and whistles associated with the casting of most spells. Usually a whooshing sparkly colored glow.

Do you think that the casting of a spell might give away the location of the invisible spell caster?

I guessing it depends on the spell.

Nope, not odd at all! Be proud!

It's been AGES since I had my headspace in Curse of the Crimson Throne... but to have the most fun, it'd be best to build a native of Korvosa, a character that works well in an urban setting, and a character who's not evil. Beyond that, I can't really say much without spending more time than I currently have looking through the AP.
