She wouldn't approve, and there'd be not many paladins coming out the other side. Whether or not you think frat parties are "good" or not... they're certainly not lawful.

That's a great question. I'd also be curious about the same thing in regards to sentient evil undead, in addition to sentient evil outsiders. Can either of them have friendships so strong that they would, for example, sacrifice themselves for a particular individual's sake, while still staying evil in general? My instinct is to say yes, especially since it could make for cool stories.

James, who's the biggest comic book fan in your office? Where do you stand in office rankings? One of the bigger fans, or don't get the appeal?

Evil has a hard time making friends. Whether or not that's a cause or result of being evil can vary.

Erik's probably the biggest comic book fan in the office, I suppose. I'm more on his side than not—although my interest in comic books is more in the horror comics than the superhero ones.

What animals off the druid companion list would make sense for Wrath of the Righteous?

I'm using Eldritch Heritage feat and Sylvan bloodline to get one for my Slayer and I really would like a lion. Unfortunately, lions seem really out of place in the icy north...

Any that would make sense to be found living in northern regions, I'd say. Going off the list in the Core Rulebook, I'd say badger, bear, bird, boar, big cat (tiger), small cat (mountain lion), dog, horse, pony, and wolf would make the most sense.

If you want a lion... the best substitute would be either a tiger or mountain lion, I guess.

Mr. James Jacobs,

In another thread we are coming up with titles for romances novels from the Inner Sea. One I thought of was A Brick in the Road: The Queen Who Loved Asmodeus and that got me thinking.

Has anyone seduced Asmodeus and did they survive the reprisal?

Yes and yes. But I'm not saying who, since that would put them in danger.

Something between a house cat and a leopard. Probably CR 1. Maybe CR 1/2. There's not a lot of design space between the two creatures, in any event, so it should be pretty easy to make one up.

why?
Because Ragathiel is too quick to punish.

Her being a greater deity and him an intermediate, couldn't she just 'advise' him not to be so rash? Of course, he isn't compelled to listen, I don't think. But, I'm thinking something along the lines of A Christmas Carol where she showcases all the successful conversions and subsequent good from them or just outright telling him to tone it down.

Certainly. But she's not gonna force him or bully him or otherwise threaten him. Especially since Ragathiel is quite good at walking the narrow line between too far and not. If he DOES go over the edge, though... she'll try to get him to come back before some other good deity who's less tolerant (like Torag) goes after him.

Re: Shattered Star and no "timer" existing in the campaign and the "Anyone else bored by this AP" thread in the SS forum

Spoiler:
In book 3, the prophecy given by Augustille talks directly about the dragon Cadrilska (totally messed that up). In book 5 it even talks about her "draconic metabolism" essentially overriding her shard's curse and getting her back in the game presumably to fulfill the prophecy. Even the scripted greeting has her thanking the PCs that she brought them the rest of the shards so she wants them anyway. So, if your group tarries for a few months in-game, that's all the impetus needed to have a single overarching plot before she comes looking for your shards. There IS imminent doom. The AP just puts you on the path to beating it before it presents itself rather than being entirely reactionary like Rise was with the goblin raid.

What do you think?

How do the gods' conflicts take place? Do they live in all 10 dimensions like the Christian God and thus incomprehensible to us in the 3rd Dimension, or is it more like Big Trouble in Little China where they create this mini place where their avatars fight it out?

Buri wrote:

What do you think?

I think that moving the shards out of the end of that adventure and therefore removing the whole reason to go through that dungeon is not a great idea. That said... the GM knows going into that AP that it's a dungeon crawl heavy one, and if he knows his players don't like dungeon crawls and will be bored... there's over a dozen other adventure paths to choose from.

We don't have rules for them, which means that conflicts can take place any way we want for the story to be what we want it to be. It can be anything.

Do you ever feel that there is a limitation on the kinds of material that Paizo will develop and release in support of playing the game of Pathfinder, or do you feel that, ultimately, there is no “aspect” to fantasy role playing that cannot be examined and discussed in support of the game of Pathfinder?

Hey James,

you know the small narration/dialogue boxes in adventures? What are your thoughts on community members recording them and making them available for other DMs somewhere like Youtube or something? Like, my female voices totally suck, but I could go on Youtube and find a community member speaking out Cressida Kroft's lines in CotCT and play those for my players? I know you probably can't make any sort of legally binding answer, but can you comment in any way? Would something like this be okay or is it more a "forget it!" kind of thing.

Do you think that a miniature of Mogaru would have ANY right to be called a mini? I just mapped out his size, and it takes up a space that's bigger than my head.

Depends on the character, but for the most part bad, since spiky armor is generally associated with bad guys.

I see.

How neutral can a follower of an evil god be and still gain the benefits of their worship? And how neutral can necromancers that summon undead get away with being? When do people cross the line to evil?

James I know you dislike rules questions, so I will deflect it to advice instead. The Warden archetype for rangers removes favored enemy, but not the quarry ability. Quarry states the target must be a favored enemy. There was a FAQ thread for this that got marked: no reply necessary. I don't see why, so I guess my friend who is making a NPC warden has to come up with something. What would you do? Have Quarry work in his favored terrain? Give bonus feats like Martial Artist monks' abundant step fix? Or something else entirely?

What are your thoughts on the upcoming Maleficent movie?

From what little has been shown, I think Angelina Jolie certainly looks and sounds the part. The director is Robert Stromberg (worked on Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, and Oz the Great and Powerful). I want this movie to be good, but am a bit wary.

Also, the part where Angelina has her hair down and flowing made me think of Areelu Vorlesh...

Depends on the god. A chaotic evil deity can have neutral evil or chaotic neutral worshipers, for example. One step removed, in other words.

And necromancers who summon/create lots of undead will eventually become evil simply because they're embracing so much evil magic. How long it takes to become evil depends on the GM.

Sure! The vast majority are magical beasts, but there could well be humanoid kaiju.

For example, click here.

As for outsider... sure as well. But that's probably a lot more uncommon, since kaiju are thematically so much a part of the Material Plane.

First off... I don't actually dislike rules questions. I actually rather enjoy getting into the rules and interpreting and explaining. What I don't like is how some folks use my responses as weapons against their GMs or other posters on this board.

I dissagree about there being "no reply necessary," since if you have no favored enemies, you can't ever use quarry. My fix would be to have only the first favored enemy gained lost or something like that. That, or replace Quarry with something that builds similarly off whatever you replace favored enemy with. Just a bonus feat in place of Quarry works fine as well.

If this is for PFS, though... my advice is pick a different archetype.

I'm cautiously optimistic. The trailers look beautiful, and Angelina Jolie is PERFECTLY cast... but it's a Disney movie, and those tend to lose their conviction lately when they try to get dark and serious. There are exceptions, and I hope this is one, but I'm not holding my breath.

You: I'm kinda done talking about this subject, since what it really comes down to is a difference in opinion between you and me about the philosophy of Empyreal Lord design for a SMALL PERCENTAGE of the empyreal lords we may some day stat up.

That's a shame, but I'll move on (here at least) since I don't want to antagonize you, and plotting without asking any questions in the meantime is kinda awkward. Hare's some from my backlog.

1. Have you ever considered an adventure path where the downtime activities were the main focus of the campaign?

2. Would Sheila Heidmarch trust anyone besides pathfinders with finding about Natayla? i.e., What if the PCs have some other group affiliation?

3. Did anyone complain that Skull and Shackles was too low-level like they did with Council of Thieves?

4. How worried should I be about accidentally repeating what someone else did for RPG Superstar?

5. Do empyreal lords have holy texts like full deities do?

6. I've no problem with Ghenshau, a LG empyreal lord of ignorance of all things, but how would that work out?

7. Which empyreal lords did you create?

8. Besides the above, which empyreal lords do you know well enough to comment on?

9. What sort of room would I use for a beauty parlor? (Hairstyling, waxing, massage, etc.)

10. What are the most advanced sanitary wipes available in Golarion, and where specifically can I find them? Yes, I think about this sort of thing frequently.

So, speaking of Kaiju, I remember seeing the art for this guy up on the store blog at some point.

http://daveallsop.deviantart.com/art/Kaiju-281750389?q=gallery%3ADaveAllsop %2F21353800&qo=25

Was that Kaiju originally planned for Bestiary 4, then cut for space? Does it represent one of the Kaiju named Kaiju from the side bar? Any chance we'll see it in the future?

Quote:

Not everyone in my group wanted to play PFS characters (faction, not organized play). I did the mix that either you were already a PFS character and assigned the mission or you've gotten their attention enough that they're using this mission to vet/recruit you.

1) Approximately how long does it take a god to create/elevate an demi-diety or quasi-diety? Desna allegedly created Black Butterfly; Asmodeus created most of his archdukes (Geryon and Barbatos are the outsiders, IIRC); Lamashtu elevated both Nightripper and Baphomet from petitioners directly to nascent demon lords.

2) Do you picture this as being a lengthy and time consuming process? A quick but extremely intense process?

3) Is it rarely done because of the time/energy commitment involved?

4) Is it rarely done because of the scarcity of suitable materials (souls)? (Ex. Nightripper, the greatest serial killer of all time, and Baphomet, the first minotaur, were pretty damn exceptional as mortals to begin with, and so perhaps met some threshold requirement.)

In Brevoy, do the Aldori Swordlords have alliegence to one of the families, or are they their own faction with their own lands?

I feel like Brevoy is built for a Nation wide campaign as opposed to Varisia's very nice fleshed out regional AP's, do you agree or are there good threads to pick out a smaller city for a campaign?

Liberty's Edge

James, we know that most Archdevils were once Angels (I think Geryon and Barbatos are the exception). My question is, are there any Demon Lord that were once celestials? (besides Nocticula, that may or may not be one)
