But to add in to this with an actual question; What's your opinion on the Hellraiser movies?

I obviously don't know the whole story with Zousha's game, since I'm not there, but weighing what he's said and what I've inferred from him and his situation through his numerous posts, I made some assumptions about the situation. I apologize if I'm wrong... but it really does sound like he's got a disruptive player in his group OR he simply wants to run a different game than his players want. Both of those situations are trouble.

I don't want someone to get kicked out of a game because they're not frightened... but it sounded to me like the situation was that the player was disrupting the game through his actions, either directly by breaking verisimilitude for the other players who were enjoying the horror atmosphere, or indirectly by being confrontational and disrespectful of the GM.

I thought the first Hellraiser was a visionary and brilliant movie.

I thought the second one, at the time, was pretty cool, but having watched both of them relatively recently, the first one stands up well to the test of time while the second one falls flat. Hellraiser II has EXCELLENT music, great special effects, and some spooky imagery (particularly of Leviathan rotating over the labyrinth)... but the story is pretty lame and the pacing and direction are nowhere near as good as the first one. Turns out, Andrew Robinson backed out of the second movie at the last minute, which forced some last minute changes and rewrites to the script, and that kinda ended up making the movie less good, among other things.

The ones that follow? Terrible. I've not seen all of them, but I've seen enough of them to not want to see more and have the brilliance of the first one diminished further by their proximity.

To be fair, this is the "Ask James Jacobs" thread, not the "Game Advice" thread, and he explained how he would handle the situation.

This is a good point. I'd rather try to keep this thread pretty focused, if possible, on folks asking questions and me answering them. Too many side discussions not only run the risk of derailing the thread, but also can result in me missing questions in the first place.

If someone takes issue with how I answer a question, that's fine... feel free to shoot me a private message via this board or email me at james.jacobs@paizo.com.

Hi James,

Can we see the mythic sandpoint devil stats from your campaign? I would like to see your take on this creature.

If thats not possible, could we know what special abilities you gave it?

Thanks!

What would you consider the Infected from Left 4 Dead? Undead doesn't seem right to me.

What type of creature do you think Bowser from Mario would be? Personally, I'd call him a dragon.

I'd probably stat up the Infected from Left 4 Dead (or 28 Days Later, for that matter) as humans with whatever class levels seemed appropriate but have them suffering from a custom-built disease or insanity that makes them act all zombie like and gives them haste or damage reduction or something to account for their ferocity.

Bowser is a half-fiend dire turtle, isn't he? I never played much Mario, so I might be mis-remembering which one he is.

Given that straight magi gain light armor at 7 and heavy armor at 13th, why do you see them as primarily light armored folk? (Effortless Armor is a 2nd level spell for them).
Because the iconic magus isn't wearing heavy armor.
He arguably isn't wearing ANY armor. He's Mister Bare Chest. And admittedly he's your recycled eldritch knight iconic. His mythic incarnation is even more improbable in that he's resting an incredibly heavy and sharp blade on his bare shoulder.

And admittedly we recycled him on purpose to be the magus because we were never happy having an iconic who wasn't an iconic of a base class.

And did you really just call a mythic character improbable? Isn't that like calling water dry? The whole point of a mythic character is that they're improbable and do improbable things! :-P

Hello again Mister James Jacobs. Thank you again for all the wonderful job.

Why there is so few African Mythology/Divinity in Golarion ? There is so few black divine beings or symbology. I don't know how african mythological religions (as the Orishas) are seen in north america, but it a so rich and fierce legends and perfect for empyreal lords and other things. I know that you already has ethnic Mwangi in positions of power (Jatembe, Seelah, etc..) and you lost the oportunity for that in Serpent Skull, but if you ever has a chance of revisiting the so much forgotten african mythology again, please try again, even superficial research has so much that could add to a fantasy world and peharps easy the preconceptions about them.

Does Golarion have any good or neutral undead?

EDIT: Another question. What would you think of people using, say, actual lizard skeletons to make miniature raveners and such?

Yes... but non-evil undead are INCREDIBLY rare.

Most of those who do exist are ghosts, because of all the undead, ghosts are the ones in classic stories who are often not evil but are instead good or neutral spirits in a terrible situation.

There's also plenty of examples of non-evil vampires in fiction... but the vast majority of those examples do not strike me as particularly well-done fiction and with a few exceptions ("Near Dark," "True Blood," and "Let The Right One In/Let Me In") I find stories that feature non-totally evil vampires fall flat on their faces.

In any event, when we do non-evil undead in our adventures or other products for Golarion... they need to be handled VERY well. And very rarely. Because 99.9% of undead should remain evil and vile, because that's the point of them; the fact that most are super evil is what makes the super rare non-evil one so much more interesting.

As for miniature raveners... maybe with some illusion magic to trick the locals, but an actually wimped up ravener doesn't really appeal to me.

As so much of what you've put into the Golarion setting is from your own games in the past, what made you decide to effectively "give up" your characters such as Ameiko? Is it that you were happy with Paizo effectively taking ownership, or is it just that you have so many more hidden away in the depths of your mind that it really didn't matter?

I ask because I have a character I've used in the past that I'm also now trying to write fiction about. Would you recommend I cling onto them as my own IP or feel free to use them with the first employer that I feel will use them properly, in the knowledge I'd be handing over ownership?

JJ,

This is going way back into your old posts; I have a question about something you wrote in 2012.

You wrote:

If a shadowdancer is within 10 feet of dim light, that's precisely what "hide in plain sight" lets them do. Note that doesn't mean they can make as many Stealth checks as they want all at once and then just take the best one.

She DOES have to make the check as part of movement, but the act of rolling the check itself does not cost an action.

She can't just stand still and roll the check, though; she has to do SOME movement (which could just be a 5 foot step... so it doesn't have to be a move action's worth of movement).

My question is: Were you just talking about situations where someone is already observing you, or any time a Stealth roll is made?

I ask because in either of the following possible examples I would not require a movement, 5-foot step or other, to initiate a Stealth roll. But, unless I mistook your intent, it seems like a movement of some sort would be necessary. Could you shed some light on this for me?

Example 1: Shadowdancer is standing within 10' of dim light in an office looking through some papers. He hears someone unlock the door to the office and wants to use HiPS to Stealth before someone walks in on him. Must he take a 5' step to roll for Stealth?

Example 2: A Rogue is crouched behind a large desk in lord's study. The door to the study is already open. He hears a guard on his patrol walking through the hallway that passes the door. Must he take a specific movement to remain crouched and roll for Stealth to avoid detection as the guard walks by?

First off... I immediately get wary about answering questions about Stealth. I don't personally have a problem with the Stealth rules in any games I play in or run, but the fact that they get a lot of people worked up makes me hesitant to speak much about them.

That on the table... here's how I would rule on your examples.

Example 1: Nope.

Example 2: Nope.

It's hard to be scary and surprising when your only means of communicating it are through text. Part of it may be the fact that he's ex-military, and fear is something that's drilled out of you in boot camp. But when coming across horror trappings in-game he doesn't even bat an eyelash. He enjoys playing Clint-Eastwood sorts of characters, taciturn men who ride into town, cooly and casually deliver a beatdown to anyone fool enough to try and attack them, and treat setbacks and life-threatening situations as a temporary annoyance they can recover from and implacably march back into town to repay the favor in kind before riding out into the desert again as mysterious as they were when they arrived...How the heck do I scare a character like that?!

Even if the player isn't scared, it doesn't mean his PC isn't.

This is an EXCELLENT point.

A good roleplayer will realize this and play his/her character appropriately, even if they're not scared themselves. That's the whole point of roleplyaing, after all... to be things/do things you aren't.

One of my big philosophies about gaming is that I like to give back the entertainment. TSR, Wizards of the Coast, Chaosium, and more have given me countless hours of excellent entertainment over the past 30 years or so, and if I can give back some of the stuff that I was inspired to create so as to inspire more entertainment... I'll do it.

Also... getting the company you work for to pay to have folks like Wayne Reynolds to paint pictures of your character, and having companies like Reaper and Wiz Kids do minis of your character, and having her show up in comics and more? Or fan art? Or NAUGHTY fan art? That's pretty cool too!

Whether or not you want to give up your character to another company is a choice only you can make... but make sure you know what you're getting into before hand and make sure you're ready to say goodbye to that character being yours and yours alone. It's a VERY rewarding experience to see a character you've made go on to be someone that the world and then inspire others to expand on her story and legend.

Or would it get some kind of reactive hover or glide check? Would winged or magical flight make a difference? Ah, so here the text for:Wild Arcana (Su): As a standard action, you can expend one use of mythic power to cast any one arcane spell without expending a prepared spell or spell slot. The spell must be on one of your arcane class spell lists, must be of a level that you can cast with that arcane spellcasting class, and must have a casting time of "1 standard action" (or less). You don’t need to have the spell prepared, nor does it need to be on your list of spells known. When casting a spell in this way, you treat your caster level as 2 levels higher for the purpose of any effect dependent on level. You can apply any metamagic feats you know to this spell, but its total adjusted level can’t be greater than that of the highest-level arcane spell you can cast from that spellcasting class.

Now you see it allows you to "cast any one arcane spell without expending a prepared spell or spell slot." at the cost of a Mythic power use. Isn't that the same as getting at least five extra spells a day? True, Wild Arcana doesn;t allow you to cast more than once a round but Arcane Surge sez "As a swift action, you can expend one use of mythic power to cast any one arcane spell without expending a prepared spell or spell slot." which not only is an extra spell per power use but a Swift spell.

or are we reading these wrong?

Anyway, we were curious how these played out, and if they were as powerful in your actual games as they appear to read.

Disruptive isn't really the best word. Discordant in terms of mood is more accurate. I'm trying to be creepy in terms of description, and he's sort of the type who plays very cool, collected characters that casually beat the tar out of anything that challenges them. Most of the time this'll be fine (It's Rise of the Runelords, we're just getting started), as his character knows hardship and suffering (half-orc born from an...ugly meeting between a Shoanti woman and an orc, and who was raised by an abusive, exiled Shoanti uncle and lost his home to giants), but when it gets to the genuinely horrific bits, like most of The Skinsaw Murders or the Ogre bits in Hook Mountain Massacre, or the Wendigo portion of the final episode, his character will be too level-headed and serious to really let the horror of what's going on sink in for the other players. Basically I'm concerned that his fearlessness will spread and the most I'll manage is disgust for the past events that led to the horror (with the ogres that's not too big a deal, as that's the kind of horror it's supposed to provoke, but with stuff like the Skinsaw Murders, which centers on tragedy rather than gross-out stuff, it might kill the mood).

I'm not sure HOW it will turn out (I'm still trying to find a way to make battle maps for the game that I won't have to save as a new file and upload every single time a turn goes by, as the game's play-by-post) as we haven't started yet, but I've had numerous conversations with my players about stuff like this, and while he's easily one of the best roleplayers I know (as well as one who'll always show up and play well, he's the admin of the forum we RP on and he made me a moderator), he has tendency to care less about mood and storytelling as much as how cool he and the other characters look while doing things. He can be a bit of a show-off in that regard.

That is indeed a way to cast more spells than a normal character. That's one of the things Mythic lets you do: break rules and do things beyond what a core character can do.

Note also that quickened spells are swift actions, and you can only ever do ONE swift action a round.

The feat isn't letting you cast the spell as a swift action—the use of mythic power to cast the spell you normally can't cast in that day is the swift action. The spell itself takes the normal amount of time to cast, and it can't be a Quickened Spell since you used your one swift action for the round already.

Liberty's Edge

Hello James,

I am about to start GMing a new campaign with my group and we wanted to try something a bit unconventional this time.
It's going to be set in a quasi-historical scenario in XI century Byzantine Empire, so I went through the class, spell and feat lists and pruned out a lot of stuff that is (IMO) a bit too flashy for the intended flavor. The players seem to be cool with the concept and the limitations (so far!). I've done some reading on the subject (although I am by no means an historian) and spent a week in Istanbul during the summer holidays to familiarize with the setting.

Have you ever GMed/played in a (semi)-historical setting? Do you have any suggestions or words of wisdom? Or do you think it is madness to try this with the Pathfinder ruleset and I should opt for a different game system altogether? :D

There is nothing that allows you to do so. The "three spell fright" as it could be called comes from a complete misinterpretation of the Coupled Arcana archmage path ability. Coupled Arcana states that you can basically use your Archmage Path ability as a free action whenever you use a wizard school power, sorcerer bloodline power, bardic performance, magus arcana, or witch hex that requires a swift action to use. Some people are incorrectly adding the Quickened Spell feat to that list because it is a swift action and WOULD combine with a Quickened Spell to allow triple spells ... if Coupled Arcana actually said that it works with quickened spells. Which it does not. So it does not.

Yay! I helped James Jacobs!

James, I'm curious about your work on The Midnight Isles. How difficult is it to collaborate on a project with another author? I'm admittedly more of a "if you want something done right, do it yourself" kind of guy, but I imagine that the amount of dialogue and cooperation necessary might make it easier to just do it yourself. The purpose in splitting it was that you didn't have enough time to do it alone, right? Would you say that you've saved time, even after all of the collaboration? And are you happy with what's been written, even if it wasn't quite in line with what you might have done yourself?

EDIT: Another question. What would you think of people using, say, actual lizard skeletons to make miniature raveners and such?
As for miniature raveners... maybe with some illusion magic to trick the locals, but an actually wimped up ravener doesn't really appeal to me.

I meant PLAYERS making ravener miniatures out of lizard bones.

I am not asking a rules question. I am asking how this rule impacts game play as James has seen it.

Heh. Having used discarded cicada carapaces as alien bug-monsters, that's kind of what I thought you meant...

And now we just need someone to make a Hollow Serpent out of an actual snakeskin.

Do otherwise-aligned outsiders have counterparts for nascent demon lords? By this, I mean are there weaker ranas, immortals, kami lords, qlippoth lords, etc.?
In some cases yes. In others, no. We haven't decided on all of them yet.

I've always assumed you can get the "nascent equivalent" by checking out each Outsiders' CR 20 creature.

Asura = Blasphemous Sages (under Asurendra)
Kami = Elder Jinushigami (under Jinushigami)
Rakshasa = Rajadhirajas (under Maharaja)
Kyton = Eremite Overlord (under Eremite) with the CR 25+ being Demagogues
. . . and so on.

I've always figured that Demons were the exception to the rule since they have both Balor Lords and Nascent Demon Lords, and Qlippoth since they only have the Iathavos and the Qlipppoth Lords.

James, would this be a fair way of looking at it?

I've been thinking about getting the Shackled City Hardcover but first I would like to get a clear idea on what it's about, It doesn't bother me if you spoil anything in it. Mainly I was looking for:

1. A synopsis for the whole adventure.

2. Your Favorite part of the adventure.

3. Would their be any difficulty or kinks in converting it to Pathfinder?

As always thank you for your time and answers.

1) The adventure's hundreds of pages long. A synopsis would be super long, so here's the super short version: Caludron fights against a conspiracy that threatens to destroy the city unless the PCs can uncover the conspirators and save the settlement!

2) Since I wrote one of the adventures and developed the whole thing (twice), I don't really have a favorite, since me saying "this is my favorite" sounds sketchy and egotistical and "these other parts by other authors are NOT favorites." SO. No further comment! :-)

3) No more so than converting any 3.5 adventure.

Also something I've been thinking about doing is taking the bestiaries as well as the bestiaries from the modules and APs and combining them all into one mega PDF for ease of use and reacquainting me with all the differant monsters that Paizo has published.

Good idea or Bad idea or Crazy idea?

Assuming you have a computer that can run and open such an enormous art-heavy PDF with anything resembling speed, I'd say PROBABLY a good idea.

are guys going to release the goblin adventures from Paziocon and gencon?
We didn't do any goblin adventures for Paziocon or Gen Con. If you're talking about the two Free RPG Day adventures we did... "We Be Goblins" and "We Be Goblins, Too" both of those are available on our website.

i thought you had goblin tracks and We Be Goblins: Smash and Burn....

I barely know what you're talking about. I'm not really involved in Pathfinder Society; questions regarding that need to be directed to Mike, Mark, or John.

We're doing what we can. I'm still frustrated at the miscommunications that happened between us and some artists in Serpent's Skull that had characters who were supposed to be black come in not so black.

With the upcoming Mummy's Mask adventure path we're trying to do better.

Is there a list anywhere of which characters suffered this miscommunication? (I am asking since I am about to run the Serpent's Skull AP)

No.
