Why did the dinosaurs die out, James Jacobs ?

Recently, we have a bad streak on the forum. Paladin alignment threads, APG Human Sorecerer favclass bonus threads, Frank Trollman Fan Club vs. Rule 0 Appreciation Society in The Great Fighter vs. Wizard Debate, and on the top of that, a streak of "<insert random question>, <insert random Paizo employee>, respond !" threads.

In order to bring some balance back in the game, I would like to ask James Jacobs what he thinks about the demise of dinosaurs.

Cosmo did it.

I have been tempted to click the FAQ button, I swear

They were an overpowered terrestrial endoskeletal class; for like millions of years, they were the only things the munchkins ever played. Frankly, I'm glad to see they've been nerfed into avians. Mammalia is much more balanced (even if homo looks to be the next powergamer genus).

+1, sir.

I blame Cosmo, too.

Am I the only one who read through the APG, saw the Clashing Rocks spell, and immediately realized that, given enough wizards, I can make rocks fall and everyone die with an appropriate high level encounter?

I forget was there a save or SR with clashing rocks? Because the best way to do that is gather up some warmages or evoker wizards and convert hail of stone from the spell compendium. No save, no attack roll, no spell resistance, no damage resistance you just get hit with rocks.

They had bad saves against cold.

The Exchange Kobold Press

If the rocks are big enough, it's a CEE (campaign ending event).

In the case of the dinosaurs, James was just testing out some of his asteroid/starfall rules. The first version was slightly overpowered, which was too bad for all those dinosaur playtesters.

See what can happen with just ONE poorly worded wish!

I wasn't previously aware of that spell, good call. I'm thinking Arcane Sorcerer casting it twice per round:

1 Maximized, Intensified, Empowered Hail of Stones as a level 7 spell, and 1 Quickened Intensified Empowered Hail of Stones as a level 8 spell.

As for Clashing Rocks, it does require a ranged touch attack and allows a reflex save. It breaks down like this:

On a hit with a ranged touch attack, and failed Reflex save, 20d6 damage, the target is knocked prone, and is buried as if by a cave-in.

On a hit with a ranged touch attack, and passed Reflex save, 20d6, and the target is prone, but the target is not buried.

On a miss with a ranged touch attack and failed Reflex save, 10d6 and the target is knocked prone.

On a miss with ranged touch attack and a passed Reflex save, 5d6 damage and no other effects.

That same arcane sorcerer, with his School Power, Spell Focus, and Greater Spell Focus all in Conjuration, is going to have a +4 to the DC over a standard caster.

But you know what? Why not have it both ways, soften them up with the Quickened Intensified Empowered Hail of Stones before unleashing the Clashing Rocks.

Maybe that's how the dinosaurs met their end....

I am pretty sure that Carpy DM had it right they were overpowered. Although I expect that Paizo scientist well be creating a more balanced version soon.

I think it's one of the most unfortunate events in the Earth's history, and it kind of makes me tear up just thinking about it.

But if it didn't happen, chances are you wouldn't be tearing up right now.

You'd be a lizard trying to take over a planet full of primates for their natural resources and to eat them. At least that's what I learned from 80's TV Miniseries.

I'd kinda be okay with that change to my social calendar.

Well I never had a problem with dinosaurs in MY game. But you have to give them full spellcasting so they can fight wizards.

I'm really angry, though, because my GM won't let me play a dinosaur in his game just because they're from Earth 3.5 and everybody knows how broken that was. I want to cry about it on the forums so you can all validate me.

My problem is that my players are always animating their corpses and using them as mounts. What can I say? It's RAW, and my paws are tied.

I always thought that stood for 'Chaotic Evil encounter.'

on the grand scale of mass extinction events, Dinosaurs is pathetic

remembering back to my degree in Geology & palaeontology, less than 1% of species to die in mass extinctions were dinosaurs

Long ago some fool let one of their players play a psionic character.
We don't talk about the results in polite company.

The real reason that the Dinosaurs died out was that there were just too many "Psionics" threads ...

RPG Superstar 2012

That's because psionic threads are the current evolutionary apex of threads and dinosaurs couldn't keep up.

Spoiler:
Totally kidding! Psionic threads are actually part of Intelligent Design.

Spoiler:
Kidding again. The Spaghetti Monster gifted us with psionic threads.

Spoiler:
EXPLOSIVE RUNES!!!!

Evidently your players should stop reading the adventures of a certain Chicago based Wizard for hire...
