Joao Marcos |
There was a non-committal grunt from Joao as he came over to pick up his pack, opening the flap to look inside. "At least you remember the crash. I remember nothing past dinner." Disgruntled, he closed the flap upon learning that his soap had likely floated away as his equipment was rescued. It got shouldered, and he looked towards the interior of the island. It was likely that there was going to be little trouble finding food. Rations were for desperate times.
He did idly muse upon the idea that the older rations got, the more one's definition of "desperate" changed.
Gareth Marcavius |
Gareth emerges from the pile, now decked out in his scale male and his only set of worn out travelers clothes, with a smile on his face that he hasn't had since he was placed on that boat. Gareth never felt himself unless he was wearing himself some armor.
He then collects his weapons of other equipment and readies his crossbow.
Soo...Umm. Was I correct in h-hearing that we have a fox and a Lizard to track down? Ma-might be a good idea to rustle up some food too... Umm...Is everybody O-OK?
Tariro |
Tariro looks up from sorting through the pile looking for her gear at a familiar snort from the edge of the jungle..."Adeen" she squeals with delight, and dropping her stuff she runs to embrace the pony. She even feels contentment from Dotar in his pouch.
She then quickly looks the Pony over to make sure he's OK. 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14 heal check
DM Wellard |
Adeen is somewhat the worse for wear with minor scratches and cuts ..nothing life threatening and a couple of days rest should see him ok.
Joao : your equipment is complete includiing the soap
Tranz
There is no sign of Vix in the undergrowth...the other passengers wince as Brugga shouts at them
"How the Devil should I know where your bloody fox is, you savage" the tall Half Elven woman in black leather snaps "take your rantings somewhere else will you..god's I need a drink" she mutters as if to herself
The Tian man snatches up his sword from the pile.."you not touch this.." he says looking at Gareth
The redheaded Sasha looks around shrugs and giggles inanely whilst the well dressed if somewhat dishevelled gnome beins to brush himself down. The Garundi man slumps on the beach seemingly unintertested in the proceedings around him
There is no response to N'goka's call for her companion
Tranz Strurgoth |
Tranz clicks his fingers together in triumph.
DM i'm not sure I understood that from the way you phrased it, correct me if I have this wrong. Also, anything from my Knowledge (History) roll?
Based on my calculations, we are about two to three days off course from our target destination- this uninhabited island is known as 'Smugglers Shiv' and is a few days north of where we should be. We're about two days away from the colony at Sargava as well...
I told that fool of a captain that his navigator wasn't properly trained... Tranz mutters after making his announcement.
Joao Marcos |
"We have a destination, then." Joao nods, satisfied that now they have a purpose. His equipment was on his shoulder, and he was anxious to start moving. Brugga shouting made him turn his head to look at what was going on with raised eyebrows
The mobility of the others he had seen, this question was directed more to the four that had regained consciousness. That the Garundi man had not attempted to stand yet made him wonder if he was okay, "It would be best that we pick up and get moving." At least the weather was decent here. Hopefully the attitudes of the former captain and Brugga were not a herald of the general tone of their situation.
That 'soap' bit was just flavor. I actually forgot to buy some.
Tranz Strurgoth |
Tranz appears to have recalled and noted down everything he could remember about the place, and moves to investigate the shipwreck, hopefully attracting some companions en route. He looks sympathetically at Brugga as he passes, but can think of no easy way to help her.
Brugga, perhaps your fox is still near the shipwreck? If you've searched around here, it can't hurt to look there...
DM Wellard |
The five passengers stare at Joao as if he had turned into a goblin.
"We?" asks the gnome..."I don't see a we here..you crewfolk can deal with the ship and when you know what is what you can tell us."
There's a general noise of agreement from the others.
no captain here the Half elven woman was a passenger. Heres the deal guys you will get no cooperation from the NPCs until you achieve certain goals..and you will have to tease those goals out off them..yes it's a pain but if you want to complain take it to Jacobs not me
Tranz Strurgoth |

Gratz on post 5,000. I've only been going a few months but i'll catch up soon i'm sure. So Diplomacy checks to try and get them to come with us will auto-fail? Well Tranz would try anyway I guess...
Tranz sees the commotion and lack of help from the passengers, and pauses, turning back towards them and holding his arms out by his waist to signify sincerity and empathy.
Come now... We're in a hostile land, and theres safety in numbers. You don't necessarily have to help search the wreck, but at least stick together. For a start, I believe I am the most knowledgeable about this island, and a good Gnome to have around if you want to survive to tell the tale...
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Diplomacy Check
With his piece said, Tranz decides to continue towards the ship, regardless of whether they follow him.
Joao Marcos |
Tranz's response followed by Brugga's to the the audacity of the gnome in assuming that their passage was free forestalled his less-than-delicate response. It was a sure thing that his expression of distaste and annoyance at his attitude was visible, though. So rather than remain obstinate and keep the situation a general stand off, he turned his back and let the other two deal with the crew, going with Brugga and Tranz to see what had become of the ship.
N'goka of Omekai |
N'goka laughs at the gnome passenger who spoke, and joins the others to check the shipwreck for their missing companions and any other survivors, saying to Brugga as they move off, I am a hunter, we will not need to eat the useless ones. Nor should we feed them. If you feed a thing, it follows you around.
Her voice is just loud enough to carry back to the speaker, but she doesn't turn to see his reaction.
Tariro |
Tariro just shakes her head at the wasteful banter. "You'd think we had enough problems without fighting amongst ourselves, she speaks quietly in her bedraggled pony's ear. "I would like to see what's left in the ship however, and my size might help there".
"Hold up"! she hollers "I'm coming with you", and she dashes to catch up to the group heading towards the wreck.
DM Wellard |
If there were any tracks that would have given Gareth a clue they have been washed away by the waves.
Tranz remembers some more about the island as you walk.
Smuggler’s Shiv is a notorious island north of Eleder. It’s not shown on most maps, but is rightfully feared by those who ply the waters of Desperation Bay. The island is named not only for the knife-like shape of its coastline, but for its uncanny habit of wrecking ships that draw too near—mostly smugglers eager to avoid detection by Sargava’s navy
It’s commonly believed that the shores of Smuggler’s Shiv are haunted by the ghosts and ghouls of the sailors who have died on the jagged rocks and reefs surrounding the island. These rumors are supported by reports of several failed attempts to establish long-lasting colonies on the remote island.
When Sargava was first settled, Chelish engineers erected a lighthouse on the Shiv’s southwest shore. The light was intended to warn approaching ships of the dangerous waters and, eventually, was to have been the first building in a small colony. The light and all plans for colonization were abandoned just before completion amid rumors of curses, haunts, and cannibalism.
You make your way along the shore towards the ship. It doesn't take long to get there ..a few of the scorpion things scavenge along the waterline but offer no threat to you.
Even a cursory glance is enough to confirm that the Jenivere will never sail again. Only the fortuitous presence of a sharp ridge of rock near the side of the sheer cliff wall has prevented the wreck from sinking entirely into the sea, for only the ship’s stern seems to have survived the wreck. This portion is wedged at an angle between the cliff and the rocks, and each wave shakes and tosses the wreck alarmingly. It won’t be long before the constant pounding of the waves dislodges the wreck and allows the hungry sea to claim the last of this once-fine ship.
The tide is out and the exposed rocks are slippery, but even though they count as difficult terrain, they can be navigated, allowing someone to walk all the way up to a ledge on the cliff that overlooks the upper deck of the wreck. From there you could make your way down. You reckon you have two hours before the tide comes in again.
N'goka of Omekai |
N'goka takes stock of her own equipment, and says to the others, Is there any thing that we specifically need from the ship? It would be unwise to spend any more time than necessary on the thing, and I do not wish any to be lost to greed.
She leaves her pack on the shore, not wishing to lug it around, nor valuing anything in it enough to be worth the inconvenience.

Greed gives over to necessity at this point. Take those things that could prove valuable in surviving this isle and building up a campsite- we have no need for luxuries at this point... And there may be survivors inside, horrific though this crash may be...
Tranz thinks for a moment, and then gives N'Goka a direct answer.
If the foodstores survived, that should be our priority, followed by any tools you can find inside.
Gareth Marcavius |
Gareth nods.
I-I'll focus on s-survivors...let me know if a-any heavy lifting is needed...
Gareth sets his backpack down in a secure spot and leaves his spear and flail as well so he has less weight to carry people or things off the boat. He then starts to make his way to the boat.
N'goka of Omekai |
As she moves out to join Gareth, N'goka says low, Survivors, weapons and tools should be our priority. Between foraging, hunting and calling upon the spirits to purify what provender the land provides, such as those sea scorpion creatures, we should not lack for things to eat. The spirits can even drain the salt from seawater, so that we will not lack for clean water to drink.
N'goka makes no provision for how the survivors will fare if she is for some reason not able to hunt for food or purify the fodder at hand...
Joao Marcos |
Frowning at the wreck as he thought, Joao looked at the wreck and the path to it with the expression of someone who disliked the situation, but knew that there were no real options. A short huff of a sigh was his response, and he looked up at the Mwangi woman, "If we can bring whatever we can salvage up to that ledge, it might make moving it easier, but short of constructing a raft..." He trails off there, noticing Gareth starting to pick his way towards the boat.
"Survivors, weapons, and tools." he stated, squaring his shoulders. "I have some experience hunting as well." With that said, he shucked his pack where he stood and started to make his way along the rocks towards the ship.
N'goka of Omekai |
The more of us who know how to forage and hunt the better. If, the rumors of ghouls have any truth to them, we will need to find a safe place to hole up, with a single defensible line of approach. Food and drink will be a secondary concern, I fear, with the primary concern being not becoming some other creatures food and drink...
Joao Marcos |
Instead of jumping down to the deck like the rest, Joao squatted at the edge of the rocky ledge, looking over what remained of the caught and broken ship. The shifting of its bulk by the waves promised a reclaiming, and soon. One hand raked through his hair, since come loose from the tie he had it in while he was on the ship.
Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
'Where was the crew? Where was the captain?' Shaking his head, Joao waited, his eyes turning to Tariro, on the beach where she was, then back down towards where they had awoken, considering those that they had woken up with. If they started stacking things on the ledge, it was possible that they may be able to unload what they can a bit faster.
DM Wellard |
I was uinder the impression that Tariro would be with the rest off you..she seemed eager to salvage stuff
If the crew were in their usual spots for sleeping it is unlikely any off them survived..the lower hull of most of the ship has been totally destroyed. The deck has a distinct slant
Joao hears a scuttling sound and three off the scorpion things emerge from the stern cabins. Two are dog sized like the ones you fought on the beach..the third is much larger..they move towards you claws clacking.
Due to the pounding of the waves on the ship and its awkward angle, movement on board the Jenivere is treated as difficult terrain, and both the PCs and the scorpion things take a –2 penalty to hit on all attacks.

Joao Marcos |
I based my post on the fact that Tariro hadn't said she was moving towards the ship
From his perch on the ledge, Joao cursed himself for leaving his crossbow attached to his pack back on the beach, licking his lips and giving a piercing whistle to get the group's attention, pointing towards the unwanted company.
Joao's Turn:
His hands moved as he sounded the growling utterances that were part of the spell, his fingers curling into claws as they were raised to his face, part of the casting process. Through the gaps in his fingers, he sighted on the large scorpion-thing. "Myniegoi", he said with a growl did not have to be feigned.
When the spell completed, he drew his mace from over his shoulder, the shaped bar of metal feeling comfortable in his hand as he prepared to jump down to the deck.
Doom cast on the large scavenger: 10/10 rounds left.
"Myniegoi"= Draconic. Command form. "Scare".

Round 1 Action
If gareth can shoot his light crossbow this round, he loads it and shoots at one of the creatures. But I never declared having the crossbow in hand & I think I would not have enough actions to shoot it in this round. Pulling it out and loading it would be two move actions right?
If I am wrong, here is the crossbow roll:
Crossbow
Attack 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 3
Otherwise Gareth pulls his greatsword out and readys an action to attack the first scorpion within reach, standing next to brugga providing more cover to his companions.
Greatsword
Attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Damage 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 1) + 6 = 13
these rolls include the -2 penalties

Round 1 summary(revised due to GM ineptness)
Brugga and Gareth take a stance waiting for the beasts to close. N'goka's arrow goes awry. Joao cannot tell if his spell has any effect.
Tranz aids N'goka in her next shot and Tariro moves behind the front line fighters readying her spear to strike.
The beasts are 20' away
