On her official website she posted the following announcement via her facebook feed this afternoon:"I quit being a Christian. I'm out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of ...Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen."

Uh, I know many christians who don't believe any of those things. If she has issues with a specific church, then she should say so, and then go to another church that doesn't believe that; they're not that hard to find.

Honestly, this sounds more like a petulant rant from a spoiled brat.

The Exchange

She changes her mind publicly every couple of years on this subject.

I've made the thread title slightly less inflammatory. As always, keep the discussion civil.

The Exchange

Pretty sure Christianity will be just fine without her.

Are you sure she didn't mean "refudiate"?

In the name of English, I refudiate silly words.

Does this mean she'll go back to writing about vampires? ;-)

I think she's bitter that a new generation has taken up the mantle of making vampires into lame sissies and wants attention.

*Golf Clap*

I think the crucifixes and holy water just finally drove her out.

Good for her, hopefully more will join the walk away from it.

Just... don't. Ok?

Well, everyone has an opinion.

The next time you get a thought Taliesen....let it go.

One would in fact hope.

Cousin Sock? Is that you?

Sir, the possibility of successfully keeping this topic civil is approximately 3,720 to 1.

The Exchange

Ahh but the flagging is so fun.

So why didn't she just switch to a Unitarian assembly they seem to be everything she's griping about. She didn't say she was renouncing her faith just her christianity.

Yes, it's totally bland now. Thank you, Ross.

Wait, so there are no Democrat christians? Or are they all just self-haters? I'm confused.

Sounds like she broke up with the Catholic Church rather than Christianity.

Or vice-versa. SO hey, if it's good enough for Nietzsche, it's good enough for me.

Scarab Sages

I seem to recall that in her novel Memnoch the Devil, she wrote about a certain run down building on St. Charles. Later, when Al Copeland purchased the building to renovate it and turn it into a hotel/restaurant, Rice took out a full page add in the paper criticizing the development and calling the building ugly, etc. That's when I stopped reading her books.

The Exchange

I stopped reading after Memnoch the Devil as well. But mainly because it seemed she was just riding her cash cow, the quality wasn't there anymore.

Huh. Weird. Didn't know she was all into Christianity.

Liberty's Edge

She's been through some heavy s+~! in her life, man.

I did get to go to one of her big public Halloween parties one year though. That was cool. It was held in a hotel I had worked at, and some friends got me a ticket. I went dressed as a priest. People kept wanting to get their picture taken with me blessing them.

Freehold DM wrote:

in case you wanted to know:

Raised Catholic
Became an outspoken atheist at 18
child died
started writing to work out her issues with the loss
made lots of money at it
other stuff happens, it usually does
Comes back to her Catholic roots
devotes her next several books to "Lord Jesus Christ"
they suck
kicks and screams that the church won't become liberal shortly thereafter
husband dies
moves from New Orleans
Distances herself from Christianity

Now I hope she just tries for a cash cow by writing some good books, to cope with it all.

I'd assume she was doing this to get talked about a bit /before/ announcing the next book. (Hey, what can I say, I'm a cynical guy.)
