Devil's Advocate here. I personally have no problem with this relatively minor role going to someone who's not white. But I do think that it is a bit of a double standard...imagine if someone made a movie about African mythology, and cast a white man in the part of a traditionally black god (please note that I know absolutely jack-crap about African mythology). It wouldn't matter if it was a tiny cameo, the race card WOULD get thrown down, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton WOULD start a $#!+storm, and absolutely nobody would defend the casting or imply that the people doing the criticism were the ones who were racist.
In regards to the "Aliens, not Gods" thing...they're aliens who INSPIRED the Norse myths. PoTAYto, poTAHto, in my opinion.
Depends on which tribe you're going for. Still, the drunk uncles would show up and proceed to yarf all over everything, as they usually do.

*shrug* I'd tell them the same thing I said above. Christianity has survived the divine being portrayed by George Burns, Allanis Morressette and Morgan Freeman. They'd just have to survive Anazasi being played by Adam Sandler.
(Now if it's the main character, I'd argue it's something different. If the Passion had stared Charisma Carpenter as Jesus, or (for less divine) if Thor had been played by Kevin Richardson (or Rose McGowan for that matter) or the Black Panther played by Johnny Yong Bosh then you're doing it wrong. The iconic star *should* look like the character he's based on. Seth Rogan as a (serious) Tarzan wouldn't cut it either.) I was worried about Daredevil for that reason, but Michael Clarke Duncan did such a phenomenal job in an average movie, I was swayed. Though I don't think he'd make a good Daredevil.)

He's a freaking god people. Deal with it.
Nope, can't blame him one bit. Especially since there seems to be an attitude these days that the Europeans are the only ones who can clean up the mess that they made, which seems to end up making things worse.

Also I think people are really over thinking Idris Elba's casting as Hemidall. All they need to do, really, is go and look at Kenneth Branagh's casting choices for the Shakespere adaptations that he's done.
He typically casts regardless of race. He cast actors that he wants to work woth and those he think will fit the role.
It doesnt mean alot to most the average white guy I guess, but to a black boy who sees Adrian Lester or David Olyewoyo in a FILMED production of a AS YOU LIKE IT or Denzel Washington in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING it kind of means alot. It means alot to me as a parent of a 9 year old boy that he see positive represnetations of people who look like him on TV and film.
*puts of flame retardant suit as people are going to read this as me saying "what's wrong with white heroes?" "You cant relate to them becasue theyre white" "BlahBlahBlahBlah" Which is not what I'm saying at all...*

Heimdals Black; oh no; I thought he was just dark complected; <sarcasm> like who cares. I am just miffed that Thor is only 6'3 instead of 6'10 like he is supposed to be. After all; a 6'3" Thor cant really look at 7'4" Hulk eye to eye.
white role models; hardly; want a role model; watch wrestling back in the 1980's where H Hogan told everyone to eat their vegatables and take their vitamins. Guess you could read old Powerman and Ironfist comics; they were somewhat role models and had a black man and a white man as best friends; bit of stereotyping of Luke Cage as an ex con; but his story and solo comic had been around long time before Iron Fist.
how did this get all racial; Thor is a Norse Diety; every culture has their own dieties as well and Marvel has put several of those pantheons in comics.
I hope this isnt going to be a racial gripe session; after all; where are the Finns; the Chinese, the Rus, the Persians and whomever else the Vikings visited; and yes; they sailed to and lived in these areas.
I think if you want to present races in a good light; they could easily do it; Dr Blake works in a hospital; have several of the doctors as people of race just like when you go to the doctor in real life, doctors come from every race and religion and are well thought of as in comics are sheild agents; who are definately on top of the heap and multiracial.
now, I am not denying that other races havent been well represented; like how many Japanese supers can you name in Marvel. Or for that matter Chinese, or Indian; or Pakastani and there are more of them than anybody so following the idea of mutant heroes; just statistically there would be more and I think in India their are more dieties than just about anywhere.
so; its a Thor movie; expect a lot of Scandanavian types; set in New Mexico; so I would expect some Latinos.
I would definately go see a Luke Cage movie if they made one; he has a great story and I really like his character and have a lot of comics with him; Black Panther; no so much; wouldnt go see a movie about him; to unreachable for me.
anyway; my only grip about Thor so far is that he is to short and I am jazzed about the movie.

You think Natalie Portman is the hottest woman in Thor?
Sif.
Anyway, I just got home from watching this movie. It was mind-blowingly amazing. The word epic gets cheapened with over-use, but this movie involved gods, heroes, and a grand tale of morality.
Loki was such an interesting and nuanced character I found myself rooting for him at times!
AND THOR! Was perfect.
Watch this movie, and be amazed, it's so brilliantly Shakespearean.

Ah...excellent...I thought I was going blind.
But little Thor commercial a 1000x better than little Darth Vader commercial...

The only thing I'm worried about with this movie is whether or not all the Asgardians shout in Fake Olde English. Here's hoping they do. :)
I was so very hoping that they would, at least in Asgard, but I also really doubt it. At most, I think we can maybe expect a single little easter egg, so to speak.

Thor slamming Mjolnier into the face of the Destroyer shouting "I say thee NAY!" would be enough of an Easter egg for me. :-)

yeah, I heard a read on the Marvel site that Thor would be released a week early or so in Aussie Land; guess the guy who plays Thor is a big time soap star Down Under.
so; for those of you who have seen it; do you think it is ok to take an 8 year old to?
I usually preview suspicious movies beforehand; but not sure I can afford to see it twice and would really like to take my daughter so your imput would be valuable.

And don't forget on Saturday, SyFy premiers the mockbuster, Almighty Thor.
I'm really starting to like SyFy's cheesy movies. They're not meant to be taken seriously at all, and fill their own niche.

Ah. Seen it,loved it. I love the feeling when expecting something good, you got something awesome. Thor is one of the best superhero-movies I have ever seen. Scenery! Action! Comedy! Loki's helmet by god LOKI's HELMET! I love it all. And how they refer to other movies and characters-golden.

What about the Dark Knight? That has to be one of the best superhero movies. Though, I personally like Watchmen the best. I thought x-men 2 was really good as well.
Definitely fun. I'd still call Iron Man and Spider-Man the best ever comic book superhero movies, but Thor blasts it's way into the top five, easily.
Top three or four, IMO, depending on whether or not Hellboy counts as a 'superhero.' :)

Saw it today and I thought the movie was quite well done, I wasn't bored and never felt like I had time to run to the bathroom. The plot stays true to the comics, updating things in an unobtrusive way, while not making the common superhero movie mistake of becoming preachy.
The only thing that distracted me (and this isn't so much a complaint as an observation) was that during all the Asgard scenes I kept wanting to sing out "Flash!! Ah aaaah".
As for the SyFy effort...disappointingly, it looks like they're going with a loose adaption of the comic book. I would have liked to see, and it certainly would have felt like less of a sad rip-off, if they'd made a movie that drew more on the actual mythological Thor and Loki characters.

Saw it yesterday - really good. Not great, but really good. Word of advice to anyone who hasn't seen it - save the $ and go see the 2D version. The 3D adds nothing to the film IMHO (the best 3D part was the closing credits).
Greg
I totally agree with Greg's post. The 3D was so-so (more like a bunch of 2D images seen further or nearer of your point of view). It left me wondering if it would of looked better in normal 2D.
I said in my post yesterday that I was going to see it in IMAX 3D with vibrating/moving chairs... That wasn't the case. I thought we were going to see it that way, but it turned out that it was not Imax and no vibrating chairs (it was one of my friends that bought the ticket).
The film was in 3D, and in UltraAVX. It's a new concept where the image/sound is crisper/louder and you get more comfortable reclining seats. Even better, when you buy your UltraAVX tickets, you choose a specific seat, and that seat is reserved for you (somewhat like buying hockey tickets). So on nights like last night (premier night), you can arrive at the theater like ten minutes before the film starts and you just walk right in, and sit at your well-placed reserved seat. NO WAITING IN LINE FOR 2 HOURS!! You pay like 17.50 for this and, in my opinion, it's well worth it. Absolutely no hassle.
The film itself was quite enjoyable. It most certainly gives you an eyeful, and it's a series of well put-together events that makes the two hours fell more like twenty minutes. I highly recomend it for anyone who likes the genre.

Hey Ultradan, if memory serves you're in Montreal, right? Where did you see the movie? Is that the IMAX at the old port?
I saw it at the 10-30 on the south shore...
