Price drop. Silly early adapters, it's the iPhone all over again.
Err. I don't really mind the 499 i doled out for the feeling of Star trekiness when i press on the screen and it follows my orders!
It will be uber geekness when the apps come for RPG's and I can't wait to see how the PDF of pathfinder corebook looks on it!

I don't think there will be a price drop, not until the next upgrade in the line occurs and they need to clear old stock. Among my colleagues, too many people at work who want one think the price range is reasonable as it is. I think the bigger problem is going to be keeping up with demand while maintaining quality.

I was at the PFS Smackdown this last weekend in Columbia, MO (You guys all need to make a trip down sometime for it). I ran Mists of Mwangi and used my iPhone to access the Paizo website for monsters and rules. I never needed my rules book or anything. I have to admit that it seriously simplified my GMing. The ONLY thing I would have liked better was a larger screen. The iPad seems to fit EXACTLY what I want for gaming.
I can carry my entire PDF library with me, and easily access whatever rulebook I need, whenever I need it, without lugging around a carload of heavy books. I can copy notes, and anything else I have written for the game. I can access graphics, maps, pictures for NPCs, etc to make gaming more fun. I can link images to NPC write ups, I can make notes on the fly.
Add in Apps for dice rolling, character sheets, combat management, etc and the iPad quickly becomes the PERFECT gaming accessory.

Because my older brother is an Apple freak, and I'm obligated to know of all of the new and exciting products available from apple...
But really, I already have a laptop with a 250gb hard drive. It would be nice to have my very own PDF pad (as I use so very many PDF's) but that is a bit too rich for my blood for so little gain.

My money is on the HP Slate because of my PDF collection, music collection, and umm, well that's about it. 64 GB is a little small for me.
On topic...
Unfortunately, would the only way that the Pathfinder Character Sheets will really work for the iPad would be if it was web based and/or saved as a PDF?
A friend of mine is interested in the iPad, but it's pretty locked down from my messing with it at Best Buy.
Krome |
Okay... size wise, my music library is 12.89GB in size with 2367 songs for 7 days of music. My Video library is 35.79GB in size with 39 movies for 2.9 days. My Gaming PDFs are 4.06GB in size with I have no idea how many PDFs and MONTHS of reading time.
While a larger hard drive would be nice, by no means is it a deal breaker. I think 64GB would suffice well enough for now. BUT future generations can easily expect larger drives, I am certain.
As digital libraries become larger and more the norm (especially for movies) the iPad's memory HAS to increase to handle demand.
The HP thing looks to be priced higher than the iPad and "appears" smaller. May be wrong that it is tiny... but the hand looked HUGE compared to it.
Regardless of the brand though, I think this product is THE common man's computer of the future. The days of huge clunker desktops is over and limited to users who NEED the extra power they provide. Even laptops will see a drop off in sales as people go to cheaper more portable devices that focus on the core uses most people want a computer for.
By the way... like that the HP device has a USB port! :) That must be the extra cost! :)

Pretty even up actually. Just leaked on the 5th. The issue that I have is the HDMI out, I would want VGA for my projector.
But yeah, it's definately the "everyday person" "PC" for the future.

This is the best review I've seen for the iPad. It does a fair job of going through the positives (there are many) and the negatives (there are also, many).
http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2010/04/ipad-review.ars/
It boils down to how each individual plans on using it. I plan on using a lot! Just have to wait a bit more for the 3G version since I plan on using it on the road a lot.

Of course you can - as long as you only do one of those things at a time. At least until Apple get their S*** together and adds multitasking to the iPad.

Yes, was real nice to hear that. I have an iPod touch and that will make me happy. Will be a nice boon for the iPad as well!

Here is a review of the iPad by USA Today:
There shall be no referencing iPad reviews for 6 months. Right now it's a huge tech journal writer circle jerk with the famous John Dvorak declaring it a "success where Microsoft failed" MONTHS BEFORE MICROSOFT'S DEVICE COMES OUT. If I read one more bloody iPad ass kissing story...

Additionally, all the hero worship puts aside any and all glaring problems with the device so using the current "reviews" as actual reviews is counter productive.

The iPad is a new paradigm, just as the iPhone was a new paradigm. It will take some getting used to. The people who love it, love it for what it is, and don't care about what it isn't because that isn't relevant to how they use it. I am one of those.
Can you edit video on it? No. But why would you want to do that on it?
Is it great for writing code? Not really. But why aren't you carrying around your laptop for doing that? Or sitting at your PC at work for that?
It's like complaining that you can't drive anywhere in downtown London with a large tractor-trailer truck. Why are you trying to do that?
If you want a device that is primarily about consuming data, browsing content, and playing not so serious games this is definitely a high value device to use.

As opposed to the tablet, tablet/laptop, and small laptops that have been around for YEARS that are more user friendly and more versatile?

Not so much for me. The foldout keyboard always has gotten in the way. I don't want to use a keyboard and the mouse interface doesn't work lying in bed or sitting casually in a chair. The touchpad and other pointer devices for laptops have never really solved this problem because they're slow and require more hand-eye coordination.
In addition, the Windows OS has never really been a good OS for tablets. It's too bulky. Getting software onto it has always been difficult.
Without iTunes, the App Store, and immediately downloadable and installable apps, the iPad would not be a good device to use.
Also, "versatile" is a bit of a loaded word. Can they do more? Yes. But the interface requirements that come with the ability to do more also prohibits me from simply abandoning the interface (mouse/pointer and keyboard) if all I want to do is read stuff on the web or listen to music while reading a book.

Yep. Six months should do the trick. I know six months after we released the Pathfinder RPG, people totally stopped trying to convince other people that their selected roleplaying game edition is better than any other...
Oh, no. Wait. No, they didn't.
Back in your bunkers, everybody!

What was the lightest tablet on the market before the iPad? How
much did it cost?
One thing I could do with an iPad easier the a Laptop is pass it around the table. Say to show an image of an NPC or of a wilderness environment.
And yes I used to DM with a Laptop but went back to pen and paper because it was fitting well on the table. Picking it up and setting it aside was a pain. It's not an abvious line of though but the footprint and weight of the device are important factors. Again in my own experiances the laptop becomes the bottom most layer of the table. Books and papers end up getting layered on top of it. I could put an iPad down on the opposite page of print adventure module without lossing acess to the keyboard. It can exist on any layer of the mess, even shuffing back to top. I could prop it between my thighs and the table... like a book.
I'll be happy to see other light weight multi-touch tablets come to market. Weight is very much a game changer in this environment.

I've got both. I like my iPad for taking to bed after I'm done with my typing-intensive stuff but want to finish browsing forums and Facebook.
Sounds like a total waste of money for anyone who already has a laptop or similar device.

Depends. It's a lot easier to access my gaming PDFs on it while I'm DMing than if I were using my Macbook. Plus it is much lighter.

But it's Apple! That means it is revolutionary and there has been nothing like it before/it's just like things before it but it's better because Apple retains strict control on what you can do on it (wait, what?)!

Yes, I imagine it is lighter than a full sized laptop
It's like me saying "I like carrying my laptop around more than my desktop because it's lighter and easier to move."
I should bloody well hope so.

One of the big reasons I probably wont bother with the iPad, and possibly the HP Slate as well, is due to a missing feature that everyone else seem to be glad for: the Stylus. I have a HP Tablet already and I love the pressure sensitive screen and the ability to write in the Onenote program like the screen was paper, or draw in photoshop or the like.
Having an interface that works well if all you use are your fingers is fine, but I'd prefer either both, or just the stylus. Guess I'm weird.

Thank you Cartigan. Your ridicule of my statement of the obvious has enlightened me to the error of my ways. I shall now return this waste of materials to the store and receive back my legal tender to be spent in a more fulfilling and satisfying way.

Again, nobody disputes the fact that the device has limitations, but I think you're missing the fact that Apple maintaining strict control over the device is what adds to the streamlined nature of the experience.
Same thing with XBOX 360 and XBOX Live. Why would anyone ever play games on that system? It's closed because it creates a more seamless user experience. Apps aren't popping up at every moment asking if they can do something.
I don't have to worry about viruses because every app is controlled by the app store.
I don't have to worry about what apps I need to read a certain file because the app tries to eliminate the need for me to have to manage the file system.
If you want a device that allows you that control in every situation, more power to you, go for a laptop.
I don't want to have to worry about certain PC issues at moments when I just want to use the PC casually.

Not weird at all. If that device meets your needs, more power to you. It's all about how the device fits the user. One interface does not fit all when it comes to PCs.

Dunno, I hate the Mac as a computer, but love their phones, and hand held devices. I want an I pad a ton. My alienware laptop is huge and heavy...this is the perfect airplane device, great for watching movies, reading books and listening to music. At home I can use it as a more cofortable bed time web browser, a nice way to catch up via I tunes on tv shows I have missed and yes if it handles PDF's well I may finally not have to lug a million books to game every week. I would still probably bring the core book for ease of use, but all my other books in one little device would be sweet. On top of all that I could throw a handful of games on it.....I think I will be hounding the wife for my birthday.

Assuming that the Leaked Slate Info is correct at launch, it does state "pen/digitizer support".
I'll wait a few weeks or a month after the Slate. In the mean time, I spend my money on camping gear (which will be more useful after 12/21/12 ; ).
