As the vines quieten, the party dashes after Jorgen back outside onto the stony beach. The inquisitor is arguing with his old man trying to get a fishing boat launched quickly.
Helga's hand shows a flash of magical healing that seals most of Anya's bruised ribs from the vine's crushing grip. Anya has time to look across the cove to the quay and the Cursed Drakkar.
The panicked fisherfolk are running up the slopes towards longhouses and the High Hall. But being old and weak, they are struggling to outdistance the stalking figure of Drago. Behind him beside the coracles and nets are two bodies, each with their necks at unnatural angles.
As the party takes a moment to take in the horror playing out before them, a bell begins to sound in the High Hall.
Dong! Dong!
Running over the rope bridge and down to defend the others is the crotchety old man with the longspear, called Spearslayer. He sets the spear ahead of the monstrous undead captain.
It will take time to get across the bay, perhaps less if someone is a good swimmer since loading and launching a fishing boat is much slower than a dive, remember that the the water is icy cold and calm. Please describe what you intend to do, we are not in rounds, roleplay as you like and I'll be filling what is happening in Stuvoy. The party can fit into two boats. Anyone choosing to sail or row across make necessary skill or strength checks to give an idea of how much they "help".
Ragnar Stolen-Voice |
Ragnar pulls off his bundled furs, leaving the padded vest on, and secures his weapons for a swim. I'm going to swim across, unless anyone is dead-set against it. I'm at 3 hp, though, so any healing would be awesome, as would an endure elements spell or resistance to help stave off hypothermia. FW, is Drago's missing leg slowing him down? Maybe I could trip him...
"Uh'll swuhm fuh uht; wuh guhttuh stuhp huhm!"
Kurn Thornsson |
Kurn will climb into the same boat as Stefnir and help row.
strength test:
1d20 ⇒ 14
Kurns head clears as he rows. He realises he has failed to both clear the cave of its curse and Krakis does not hear his prayers. The trident appears to do nothing in his hands apart from be a simple weapon. He will not reveal his vision as everybody will think him mad. He comes close to throwing his holy symbol into the bay, as he is no longer worthy to be a servant of Krakis.
Ragnar Stolen-Voice |
The mute nods his thanks to Stefnir (and Helga if she can spare some healing) and dives into the frigid water.
Swim check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Fortitude save vs. Cold, if needed: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Ragnar Stolen-Voice |
The mute nods his thanks to Stefnir (and Helga if she can spare some healing) and dives into the frigid water.
Swim check: 1d20+5
Fortitude save vs. Cold, if needed: 1d20+9
Assuming that 8 swim check means no progress, let's try again...
Swim 15 feet: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Swim some more: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Jorgen Ulrichsson Truesight |
Growling at the old man in annoyance Jorgen secures his equipment and whispers a few words in the old tongue his skin thickening slightly.
Casts resistance
With a look of intense focus he strides forward, an odd flicker seeming to pass over him, per haps a tricck of the light, or something more as he dives into the icy waters.
Judgement: Resistance. Jorgen now posseses cold resistance 2
Swim check 11d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Swim check 21d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Swim check 31d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Anya Fiend-Fury |
"What in Hela's Hells!" Exclaims the babarian in confusion and fury as she witness' the horror on the beach. Yet depite her surprise and natural revulsion to the abberation of undead the warrior does not hesitate as she secures her weapons to her and dives into the fridgid waters. Once in she does her best to ignore the cold and swims with all she can
Fort vs Cold:1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Swim:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Swim:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Swim:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
If she can't swim with the battleaxe strapped to her she'll instead toss it into the same boat that holds her longspear

.....ypothermia. FW, is Drago's missing leg slowing him down? Maybe I could trip him...[/ooc]
"Uh'll swuhm fuh uht; wuh guhttuh stuhp huhm!"
Drago has two legs, although at this distance it is difficult to tell much more than maybe that the one time missing leg looks darker.

Helga, Kurn and Stefnir hurry the old man into his fishing boat and he is shocked by the speed with which they take over, Helga has the sail and tiller working straight away, so fast that the old man sits down with a bump on the boards. Kurn's strength gets the vessel off the rocks and Stefnir tries manfully to aid him.
One more of the same checks from you three, if all goes well, the boat will land a couple of rounds after the swimmers.
Ari is left behind as the boat moves off, but the old woman is starting to launch hers.
Meanwhile like a trio of salmon, Ragnar, Anya and then Jorgen (bearing protective magic) dive into the calm waters. The icy chill bites into each of them, although Jorgen barely feels its worst effects. Their swimming suffers at first, and then each begins to plow ahead. Soon their eyebrows and hair are ice cold and frosty as an iceberg.
Can I have one more swimming check from the barbarian, inquisitor and the fighter? Plus two Fort saves vs cold (remember not to include your furs) from Jorgen and one more from the others.
Across the bay about hundred feet from the water's edge, Drago slams into another old woman and then charges at the old Spearslayer. With one careless swing of his arm, Drago bats the spear aside and then crashes into the old man. The man backpedals to stab at Drago but then he takes a hard punch to the face almost knocking him off his head.

Initial Fort save DC20, non lethal damage 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2, Secondary Fort save DC21, non lethal damage 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Anya reaches the other side of the cove slightly ahead of Jorgen and Ragnar however she does feel the cold beginning to bite near the end 4pts damage, she swims like a fish. Ragnar is similarly effected as he reaches the water's edge. Jorgen feels the hurtful icy water entering his throat once or twice 2pts of non lethal damage but otherwise survives the swim well.
Down on the beach, Drago's fight is out of sight on one of the higher slopes however more people are beginning to appear out of their longhouses at he screams and warning bell tolling.
Helga heels the boat over slightly and it arrows across the cove with Stefnir pulling hard with Kurn 1d20 ⇒ 10 trying to keep up this time. It shouldn't be long before they reach shore as well.
Anya Fiend-Fury |
Shaking her limbs to help get the blood flowing in them again, Anya keeps moving as she runs as fast as she can towards the sound of the fighting
Once close enough she yells "Drago! Or whatever hell spawn moves you! Turn and fight a real foe!"
Can she get close enough to attack this round? And was she able to swim with the battleaxe strapped to her back, or no?
Helga Evadottir Alfchild |
As soon as the keel of the boat grinds against the shingles, Helga leaps ashore through the surf and races after her sister. As soon as she spire Drago and is close enough she will risk a shot from her bow to get his attention.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 Plus (or minus) any negative modifiers for range.
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Jorgen Ulrichsson Truesight |
Water streaming from his body, ice forming in his beard and hair Jorgen ignores the wicked bite of the cold, his fury driving him on as he begins to run.
Full of focus the inqisitor targets Drago like an arrow, his wordless intensity in stark contrast to Anya's roar of fury.
French Wolf |
Anya, Ragnar and Jorgen climb out of the water and set off up the small stone beach, splitting to run or dodge round the nets, coracles and bodies. One of the bodies gives a low groan as they pass.
Ari reaches the beach, just as the fishing boat slides to a stop. He rises dripping out of the icewater take 4pts of non lethal less any racial bonus for being a half-elf. Just as Stefnir, Kurn and Helga jump down with a loud crunch.
The undulating slopes mean that no one can see the fight between Drago and the Spearslayer warrior. But the action is about one hundred feet from the twenty foot wide pebble beach. Anya is slightly ahead of the other two swimmers about 80 feet from Drago. Ragnar and Jorgen are about 90 feet while the rest still have to negotiate the obstacles and difficulties of the beach.
That means Stefnir is about one hundred and twenty feet from the sounds of violence but has no line of sight until he is much closer.
On the beach are two bodies, one is making noises and one is not.
Helga Evadottir Alfchild |
"Kurn these people need your help!"
As she cannot see the action to shoot, Helga burns her second-from-last spell to cast expeditious retreat on herself before she jumps ashore and races up the shingle as fast as she can, intent on reaching trouble as fast as possible.
Anya Fiend-Fury |
Finally in sight of the undead former captain, Anya one again roars his name, rising into her battle fury for the second time that day. Never ceasing to move, holding her battleaxe in her off hand she reaches over her shoulder to grab a javilin and launches it at Drago.
Actions:
Move 40'
Ranged Attack & Damage:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 171d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Jorgen Ulrichsson Truesight |
Jorgen stops for a moment old tongue syllables dancing off his tongue as he feels a heighened sense of awareness, his eyes shimmering as he sees not only where things are, but where they will be moments later.
He continues going forward a focused predator's lope.
cast true strike, continue forward 30ft

As Anya moves up the slope she can see Drago coming back towards her. Slowly he comes to the brow, fully into view and Anya can see the charred brown wooden leg attached on one side. Behind him lies the fallen body of the old spear warrior, his weapon snapped into pieces.
Her javelin sails high then drops out of the sky to pierce Drago's shoulder, but the dead captain does not feel anything. He just keeps coming.
Ragnar spins his sling at full pace but the glancing blow from his bullet has no effect on Drago. When he stops, his fists begin to crackle with dark energy, and green lights show in each eye. Somehow the body is imbued with hellish power.
By the end of the round Drago is close enough for the attackers to reach him in a move.
Kurn finds that the woman is bleeding badly but can be healed to stop the wounds killing her. Ari finds that the other fisherfolk man is dead.
Party's turn but Drago looks ready.
Jorgen Ulrichsson Truesight |
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
As Jorgen comes over the rise a patch of ice causes him to lose his footing, his throw a sloppy thing, and yet it sails towards Drago with surprising accuracy.
Attack1d20 + 25 ⇒ (1) + 25 = 26
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
He continues his advance, wary as he draws his spear eyes locked on the witch-powered former captain.
French Wolf |
I should have said no need for initiatives. Its one against many. You go, Drago goes.
Jorgen's javelin spins towards the Drago and sticks firmly into his leg. His wooden leg, the captain is unconcerned and does not notice as he steps forwards a pace, and the javelin dislodges under his foot.
Natural 1 is an auto miss, even a 25 or 26 in total.
Anya Fiend-Fury |
Raing with a combination of fury and horror for what the captain she had respected has become, knowing he would never wish his body used in such a ungodly manner, and bolstered by her sister's song, the Barbarian has no hesitation as she rushes in to attack the reanimated creature before her.
Attack & Damage:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 1d12 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Ragnar Stolen-Voice |
Ragnar follows Anya's lead, dropping his sling to pull out his axe and dagger. He swings at Drago with the axe, keeping his knife in a guard position.
Battleaxe: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 71d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Inspire courage is attack rolls or attack and damage? Well, no matter, I probably just fell on the axe anyways.
Ragnar Stolen-Voice |
Kurn will stop the woman bleeding to death, then move toward the fight, not that he thinks he will be needed.
As a melée fighter with only 3 hp left fighting an undead monster, I would beg to differ! ;)

I would think true strike would cancel that since it actually costs a spell slot but ok

Helga
Ragnar's axe cuts a wide furrow in the earth. 2 nat 1's thank you very much.
Then the heavens open around Drago, in the winds and rain, that intestine flutters loose but otherwise the captain looks just as ready for battle as before, he pays no attention to anything. Just like when Anya hurt it.
I think that is everyone. Drago's turn.
The dark energy corrupts his hands and shivers through the captain's body, making his arms then torso and leg ripple, the skin and flesh is pulled outwards. Drago begins to grow.
Soon he stands over Anya and Ragnar like a giant or troll.
That happens before his actions. Randomise action 1-2 on Ragnar 1d4 ⇒ 4
Next the giant Drago swings his fists down at the pair, trying to crush Anya between them.
Drago on Anya 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21, fist damage 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12. Over to you guys.
