I have to say that I am very interested in a Pathfinder Modern set. And would be quiet willing to add my 2 cents or 100 bucks as the case may be. After I read about pistols and rifles in Golarion, I was hooked, line and sinker into Pathfinder. After I was already hooked by the Paladin in the core book... reminds me of good times... good times...

I'd be willing to pay $50 minimum and would probably sign up at a higher level of patronage if available. I have several questions about the project that would influence my level of particpation:
1. What do you mean by a Pathfinder version of d20 Modern? I know that sounds disingenious but what (roughly) would you be changing besides updating significant chunks of the rules (e.g. skills, combat, feats, FX) to match Pathfinder?
2. There have been multiple threads dedicated to discussing the problems of d20 Modern. What do you see as in need of fixing in the d20 Modern ruleset?
3. Have you looked at Grim Tales, which to my knowledge is the only product designed to improve/fix the d20 Modern ruleset (as opposed to modifying for a specific campaign setting) prior to this?
4. While I enjoy Pathfinder, I also picked up Trailblazer and found the analysis of 3.5E in Chapter One to be simply amazing. Will the work in Trailblazer be used in your project or would you undertake a similar analysis to partially determine what underlying mechanics were in need of attention?

It happens, and understandably so. I guess I've gotten used to using the word "Spiff" in an office context. Spiffs here at my job are things like: HD TV's, laptops, recognition certificates, parking spaces, etc.
I would happily donate $100 to $150 or probably more if I could go modular to get my name/likeness as an iconic or even a minor NPC. I'm vain that way, what can I say?

Probably safer to use in context than twink in an office setting. :P

Color me interested as well. I always liked d20 Modern, but ne3ver got to play. Maybe with a PF version i could convince some of my moribund* friends to try it.
*-Maybe not the best word to use, but i get a quarter if i can use it in a sentence. :)

MUCH safer. Case in point, I've started substituting the word "Fluff" for a different F word. One of my co-workers laughs uproariously every time he hears it because he's spent time amongst the adult film industry. And in that industry, "Fluff" has a completely different meaning.
Which I will NOT share here for the sake of politeness.

Have to admit it'd be one of the more...unique...offerings.

I wouldn't imagine so. Thank you for all your hard work, patience and perseverence while trying to bring a brilliant project to the fans.

I'm extremely interested in an update for Modern. Some of best gaming memories are from playing Modern. I don't know if I could do $50 all at once though. It'd be easier on me and a lot of other people probably if we could throw down 10-15 or so at a time and work our way up to the awesome. Also this is my first post here on these boards. Go Modern!

I really enjoy writing for D20 Modern, as most of my stuff is for that system. I would love an updated version, and I've got about a $100 set aside in my Pay Pal account specifically for the patronage fund.
As soon as I heard about this, I put a post up on my blog with some design wishes for a revised D20 Modern, so if you're interested, follow the link over here: http://otherversegames.blogspot.com/
I really hope this project takes off, and hope it proves as good a seller as Pathfinder itself.

I find it encouraging that despite the fact that the big rush has slowed, people are still trickling in offering their support in this thread. I think that bodes well for the viability of this plan and the overall desire for such a product.
Agreed. I just hope that the teases that Owen, Stan! and Hyrum blog on FB may involve this inevitability. <crosses fingers>

I would pay $50 bucks just to see what Paizo comes up with!!!
Even if I never run a Modern genre game!!!
Just in case you weren't aware, this isn't Paizo that's inquiring about rebooting the game for Pathfinder; it's Super Genius Games. But if you still want to get involved after you make yourself aware of the main players involved, then the more the merrier! :D

Expect something soon, we discussed this yesterday on the Genius Conference Call and just need to figure out a couple of more details.

And Owen's the worst of the bunch. I wanted to grab him by the shirt and shake him. "Good god, man! Out with vague and spill the specifics!" :D
P.S. Good to know you're recovering. Hope you're not minding my random suggestions when they pop up.

![]() |

Okay, I can do specifics. They're just vague specifics. :D
1. At yesterday's meeting, we approved the first draft of our design goals. Those are a statement of what we hope to accomplish with this project, and what we are using as our blueprints. That's important, because we can't answer in advance some specific questions about which game mechanics we will include, which we will change, and how compatible we'll be with specific products. The whole point of this project is to give the game a thorough overall, with research and development that could alter what we think it the best option as we go.
However, people deserve to know our plans before we ask them to put money on the table. Thus, official design goals need to be ready before we can actually put up the page to let people become patrons.
2. We also approved a first draft what the levels of involvement will be, and what specific benefits each level shall receive. We need to have those set, but we still can't reveal them because...
3. We began the process of deciding what framework we're going to use to allow people to pledge money. There are a lot of sites that assist with this kind of patronage project, but each has its limitations. We are doing a budget bigger than many sites handle. We'd like to do a specific timeframe some sites don't allow. We need to keep the cost of any site's services in mind when working the budget, and some want a split we see as too high. We're looking into it as we...
4. Pin down the final budget. We need an official business document that has not just our best-guess costs, but specific prices for printing, shipping, editing, artwork, layout, paying any freelancer we hire for sections of writing, covering our income as we work on this, paying for those special benefits people get at various tiers of patronage, developing and running the messageboards for the project, and so on. Obviously many of those costs will be quiet small, and may end up being "we have someone who will do it." But we need to look at every aspect of this project in advance, because our budget is set in stone once we start letting people become patrons.
So, work is proceeding on actually putting up a page and saying "The project has XX days to get patrons worth $YY dollars, with ZZ patron levels." But we're taking this very seriously, and want to make sure we have our angles covered in advance. And, that takes time, which we have to pry away from the projects that are currently paying the bills.
But yeah, I continue to be encouraged that people are still offering their support, and the more activity there is on this thread the more overtime we'll put in to having this ready.
And that's all on TOP of sorting through a few hundred pieces of fantasy art for a new product line, discussing the writing and development of some print Pathfinder RPG-compatible books, discussing our plans for the upcoming convention season, and dealing with inquiries from fans, freelancers, and even other 3pp looking to team up on or submit ideas for various projects. All of which is very exciting to us, but is very behind-the-scenes stuff.

Urizen |

Thanks for the update, Owen! In addition to going through hundreds of pre-made fantasy art, it's also a chance to go through some role calls for up and coming budding artists out there for a project of this magnitude. I'd be curious to see some of the other freelancers you guys may get on board (if you haven't already, pester Darrin Drader). If there's one thing I really worry about is not so much the crunch, but the overall presentation itself. I don't want to call out certain products publicly, so I still owe you guys my thoughts elsewhere. I think there are some good ideas to be able to control cost containment to make this venture a realistic one.

Hi all -
I have questions. I've already agreed that I'll do the minimum $50 patron aspect of this project. Of course, I saw GMSarli's work on e20 System Evolved here - http://e20system.gmsarligames.com/faq.html and pledged $50 via kickstart for his project. Sure his is more of a d20/OGL aspect while this is to be a Pathfinder /OGL d20moder future aspect.
But from reading his concepts and his work background and what Super Genius want to it seems like there will be a whole lot of overlap as well as potential competition. While I'm not opposed to it, I am concerned that one might affect the other financially and thus hurt development when they could work together.
Has this subject been broached? A concern? Or are what SG is planning so not connected to what he has planned that they aren't even in the same ball park?
As a potential customer to either both or one, I want to be prepared. With 18 months of jobless-ness...my dead president coupons are limited.
Thanks for taking a look at that project and letting me in on what may or may not overlap.
Be Well. Be Well Future Evolved.

I've been a big fan of D20 Modern since I spotted the shiney cover art on the shelf at the local nerd-store so many years ago. I admit I haven't had a chance to purchase Pathfinder yet (next on my massive list-o-stuff-I-covet), but I hear many good things and would love to see a reboot.
I'm also in the sci-fi boat moreso than the mundane modern boat, but the core is what's important. I'd be willing to spring $100-200+ for some "spiff" as it has been put. I'd also be interested in "auditioning" some writing if at all possible.

[This is GMSarli, BTW -- Paizo's message boards won't let me change my avatar name until I'm made more posts!]
I can't speak for Owen and the Super Genius crew, but I'd hope we don't end up directly competing too much:
* Their project is, from what I understand, meant to be a modern-era book that's directly compatible with Pathfinder. I've worked with Owen and Stan! on multiple projects in the past, and without a doubt you couldn't find a better set of game professionals to overhaul d20 Modern into the Pathfinder mold. Frankly, whenever they get their machinery up and running, I plan to be at least a $50 patron (and I'd set it a lot higher if I didn't plan to be way too busy with my project, below).
* My e20 System Evolved project is conceived of as "grass-roots game design" meant to thoroughly rebuild the SRD/MSRD to make core rules that work for any genre right out of the box -- and it's definitely not meant to be compatible with Pathfinder (or much of the rest of the OGL books out there, for that matter). Since my project is meant to have very heavy patron involvement from the very beginning (as in "debating and voting on the most basic rules"), it should have a very different feel: I imagine the Super Genius project will be like watching a team of master mechanics rebuild a classic muscle car, but mine will be more like going MacGuyver in a junk yard ... and if you're a senior patron, you should plan on getting your hands dirty. :)
So, in my opinion, any one person could do one, both, or neither, depending on what they're interested in seeing in a game design project.
(One final point: My fundraising period is ending fairly soon -- March 15th -- and the Super Genius guys haven't even opened theirs yet, so hopefully anyone who's interested in both projects won't have to pay for both in the same month!)

Just to keep everyone informed, we spend a good deal of time during our weekly Super Genius Games World Domination Progress Meeting discussing this project. The discovery that Fundable.com has gone away put one wrinkle in our plans ... but not so much that we didn't make progress on two other fronts.
We continued preliminary work on what will be the Design Goals document for this project when it goes to the funding stage (so you will have a very good idea what exactly it is that we're asking you to fund). It has to be clear and have a concise direction for the project, yet still leave room for the patrons to participate in a meaningful way, and the goal must be achievable within the allotted time frame.
We also talked about other options are out there now that Fundable.com is no longer an option, and what advantages and drawbacks of each are. If you have any suggestions that you think we should be considering, please feel free to present them here. (We stop by at least once a day, even if we don't always leave a message.)
That's about all the news, except to say that excitement is still running very high among the Geniuses about this project. We hope, if all goes well, to be able to move to the actual fund raising phase sometime in February.

I'm interested in a new d20 Modern ruleset, and other gamers in my group have been wishing for one too. I have to say I'm not a big fan of patronage and have never done one before. I might for this, but there's too many "it disappeared without a trace while in development" games out there. At least, I'd buy it after for sure.
I would like to see the stat-based classes go, however. I liked a lot of things about d20 Modern but that's not one of them. Would like that part to be more like Modern20. Would like to see a defense bonus by level (tied to BAB maybe) that helps with the issue of "in modern, your AC never gets better".

My main concern would be: Can you dump an LA SWAT team into a PFRPG dungeon & not have to ad lib most of it to work. Those situations would be what I would like to know before I could really consider monetary support. I want the rules to be interchangeable in the right type of setting.
Owen threw a Star Destroyer against Cthulhu. Does that help? :)

This is the sort of thing I'd be interested in as well. The original d20 Modern had such a completely different power level from D&D that you had to do a lot of work to mix the two.

As far as spellcasting, I was working on a homebrew Modern system where the mages had Bard style progression, so that it still matched closely to d20 Modern. I was going to make a PrC similar to the Bardic one in The Complete Arcane that gave them wizard like progression. Was becoming TOO much work with my schedule. This was going to use 20 level classes.

I would be in for sure
I'd support this project. How about to cut the costs a bit, hire some new freelancers/artists at say 1/2 the price with promise of book credit and say some more work down the line if they material is worthy. I know there is a ton of great writers out there, who could use a break with a credit for their name. I know I'd do this. Also i'd like to see nicer forums for this site, I think what we have is a bit "weak".
