I didn't hear that Dagon may have been associated with the broader Canaanite pantheon until recently, as the son of El and father of Ba'al.
Heh, I wrote a post to this, and I think Yahweh had it stricken for blashphemy ..
Anyway, yeah it's freaky when you get into the religious history of Canann/Phonecia/Carthage and those other ur-Semitic cultures. Also weird how the Israelite Yahweh worshippers literally 'demonized' the other competing gods of the area over time, to where they are now part of Hell's hagiography.

This story actually makes a good deal of sense to me, to the extent I think I know it. El was the original Father/King of the gods. He was displaced by Baal (sometimes son, sometimes grandson of El), the storm god. This pattern is repeated in several other nature polytheisms. We now know from linguistics that Hebrews were just one part of the Canaanites stew, so apparently, they were the conservative group that, on the whole, resisted this consignment of El to religious retirement. When El is identified with YHWH and you have the progression from monolatry to henotheism to monotheism, you also get the rejection of competing members of the pantheon El formerly headed, especially those that were live option competitors. (Also in this process, there was some tendency to keep YWHW married to El's wife Asherah, which obviously won't work with monotheism.) Eventually, though, these rejected gods were literally understood to be nothings. The re-identification of these beings as demons instead of lies seems to have occurred much later, largely after what Jews would consider the biblical period (but already by NT time, in it's beginnings, at least.)
Anyway, I fascinated by it, and a former classmate of mine went to Harvard and concentrated on this stuff. So feel free to pick up any books by Mark Hamilton or the expert he recommends, Mark Smith.

here are his exact words "this topic works. Think about what kinds of sources you can use in this speech. A good way to relate this subject is to explain the significance of these deities in their own time and contrast that to what we have today. There are a lot of parallels."
I could have read or interpreted what he meant in the wrong manner.

Okay, then I'd say use what religious influences you have in your own context that would resonate strongly with your audience. I won't presume to know your audience. We live in an unusual time and an unusual place.

So it's probably gonna take me a while to catch up since I've been offline for more than 24 hours. Ugh. Last night I had the worst migraine I've had in years. And today I had the joys of going on an outdoor filed trip - in Michigan, in February - as a chaperone. One of those if you want us to take your little monster you need to come along kind of things. He actually wasn't that bad. And I'm seeing where some of the problems are coming from now. Stupid gorram six year old bully. And Bryce does not have enough self control as of yet to deal with this crap without resorting to physical violence. *sigh*

Hi all. Had a nice dinner at home, and then we went to a friend's art opening. He has some really nice stuff on display, and I think it was his first solo exhibit. Very cool, but we didn't stay long because we didn't know anybody.
I also spent some time paging through the 4e Underdark book at Border's. I think Torog might be my new favorite deity. Kickass...

What kind of school has an outdoor field trip in the middle of Winter?
Sorry Bryce is having trouble dealing with the bully. The world would be better without bullies.

He may mean the crucification of Odin on the world tree and the sometimes seen parallels with the Crucification.

Cool. I'm glad you had a good evening.
You'll have to share what you can about Torog for those of us who are ignorant of 4e.

He's the god of torture and imprisonment, and is trapped in the Underdark with maiming injuries that can never heal. He's this massive bloody carcass that drags himself around on his hands.

Apparently Ann Arbor schools. Nature walks in the dead of winter are soooo much fun. </sarcasm>
Anyways, I feel better after venting. There's not really a lot of help for the bully situation. There never is. Every school has em. And you're not allowed to tell your kids to beat the snot out of them until they stop picking on you these days. So that pretty much ruins all of my advice. ;)

Wait, he's a god who ninja'd Mairkurion's ex-wife? That's pretty damn specific.
I thought my posts were funnier, but hey, I like this one, too.
Leaves offering to Torog.
