I honestly hope this doesn't rattle any cages, but am I the only one that finds the whole 'woman takes the man's name in marriage" thing a little weird and antiquated?No.It would be interesting to find out where and why in history this began. Any help?
Without doing any actual research, I would assume it comes from times when families were tribes/clans. When you married outside of the clan you became part of the new one and took that name. I'm also pretty sure that there were places where it was custom for the man to join the woman's clan and thus take her name.
And there are occasions today where the man takes the woman's name, or in the instance of all those famous folks where they both keep their own names.
Personally, I don't see how a couple could see themselves as one family if they don't share the name, but that's just me.

I have had doctors named Dr. Trust and Dr. Ram. My dad has worked with, on occasion, people named Bruce Bruce, Chuck Steak, and Dick Sprinkle.I knew a girl named Ashley who married a guy whose last name was ... Ashley. So now she's Ashley Ashley.
I really think I would have hyphenated with my maiden name, at least. I mean, I assume Bruce Bruce was victimized by his parents, but she chose the name.
Similarly, I knew a girl named Amy who married a guy whose last name was Amy. Yep, just like that...Amy Amy, and she has a lot of fun with it.
I also know a Linda Hand. And then there's the famous Texan twins, Ima and Yura Hogg.
BTW...I think a wife taking her husband's name is a good thing.

My mom's maiden name is Lamp. My aunt Terry married my Uncle Bill who's last name is Shade. Her name is now Terry Lamp-Shade.

Also...one of my good friends is a PTA class president for her kids school and they had a kid on the rolls who bore the name Kilo Cartel...but thats not as bad as one of my g/f's employees its Aquanetta Jones

I grew up with a lot of Vietnamese kids, and have to say small Texas towns and names like Fuk, Duc, Long and Dong have to be hard to grow up with.
The toughest Hispanic kids in the neighboring high school was named Domingo Flores. "Aww, how cute, Sunday Flowers!" "*punch!*"
