Interest in an Adventure Path PbP? (Pathfinder RPG)

Hi folks,

So my first PbP game is humming along nicely (Kill Bargle!) and I have the hankerin' (and time) for more.

I'm writing this to see if there's an interest in one of the Pathfinder Adventure Paths played as a PbP game? I'd be using the Pathfinder Beta rules until August, when I'd switch over to the final release rules. I'd also use some house rules and other stuff from the BoXM.

My inclination is to run either Second Darkness or Legacy of Fire.

Do I have any takers? I'm looking for folks who are familiar with the glacial pace of play by post games, and are willing to post at least once a day during the week and at least once on weekends if at all possible. If you want to see what kind of game I like to run, please check out my Kill Bargle PbP game HERE.

Do you have a preference as to which AP to run?

Best,

BrOp

Ooh...I'd love to play either one!

Hello - been reading through your Kill Bargle game and it seems we have similar styles in writing up actions and such (me likey). I am interested in playing, although I am new to Pathfinder and still learning the rules.
As for a choice between Second Darkness and Legacy of Fire....Legacy of Fire peaks my interest more at the moment, but whatever the majority of the party wants is fine. I just want to play. :)

Posting frequency is fine with me. I'm going to be out of town only twice this summer - once next weekend (6/26 - 6/29) and then again in August for Gen Con. Other than that, I'll be around daily.

Liberty's Edge

I'd certainly be interested! My preference would be for Darkess, since I'm currently in a Legacy of Fire (though it's been stalled for awhile due to DM absence, I'm just not ready to give up on it).

I'd love to jump into another game of yours, but I'm in a LoF PbP and running Second Darkness IRL. If you ever decide to run CotCT, I'm claiming a spot, though! It's the only AP I don't have the prospect of either running or playing in.

I would be interested, too, if you'd have me. I'd lean a little more towards Darkness, but either would be great. Posting at least once a day is no problem.

Second Darkness !

I would also like to play in a second darkness PbP . I had one but the DM had to quit for RL .

Shadow Lodge

If your still accepting players...

I don't care which AP we play, though I don't have the Second Darkness Pdf. My characters are different for the Aps though.

Second Darkness: Halfling Sorcerer(Air Elemental Bloodline) or Halfling Druid(whichever is needed more)

LoF: Half-Orc Ranger(with battle poi) or Half-Orc Druid/Rogue(again whichever is needed more).

If we qualify, can we use MM feats?

hey man,
im down with it.
id be up for trying out something plane jane with a twist. thinking human bard and RP the heck out of it.

Well, it seems there's an overwhelming desire for Second Darkness, which is fine by me. Since there is significant interest I will not choose participants via first come, first serve. Please submit a short character profile and history, and I will pick the best 6 or 7. Statted character sheets are not necessary at this point. I will make my choice based on party balance, depth of character development, and campaign setting integration (Golarion). For those of you not familiar with Second Darkness, it begins in the pirate town of Riddleport, a semi-lawless refuge for the scum and villainy of north-west Avistan. Characters that are integrated into this setting will receive higher consideration. If you have access to the Second Darkness player's guide, so much the better. I will also give each PC a group affiliation, but if you choose one now that's okay too.

So that you know what you'll eventually b going for, the following books are allowed for character creation:

Pathfinder RPG Beta
Character Traits web supplement
Any feat, spell or item from a Pathfinder book
Spell Compendium

Any other questions?

Shadow Lodge

Sounds like the sorcerer may be better suited for the AP then, but I'll post backgrounds for both of them tommorow(or use the same background with some slight changes).

Definitely interested. Something in the fighter line. Deadline for submission?

Oops, I forgot to mention that. Deadline will be a week from today, Monday, June 22.

Well I was in the same game as Robin and here's my character as she was when we ended..we had barely gotten past the first fight so it's easy enough to do a reset on her.

For DM's eyes only.

Spoiler:
Mel works 'his' way up through the tiers of the arena towards the Managers box. Down on the sand below the three still living young Shoanti warriors out of the five who commenced the combat face off against a raging gore bespattered Minotaur. The young rogue grimaces at the baying of the crowd ...they want blood and it doesn't matter whose it is.

No one here is really paying much attention to the slight youth...not the crowd, not the vendors selling ale and hot sausages to them, not the sad and bedraggled whores who work the arches of the arena for a few measly coppers a time and who have learn't not to bother trying to attract his attebtion.

Nodding to the heavies who block the way for the general audience she slips into the box..the 'Old Man' and some of his Capps are there, some wagering on the match, others indulging in whatever pleasures they fancy be it food, drink or women.

Clegg Zincher looks round his senses telling him off her entrance even over the noise.

"Ah Mel....you got the papers"

"Yes Guvner, the bills of sale made out by the Magnimarian merchants for all the 'goods' we brought in last week and proof that our taxes were paid in full"

"Good, Good that should keep the bastards off our backs for a bit"

The crimelord offers Mel a plate of sweetmeats which she politely declines

"Suit yourself"....A shout goes up from the Arena as one of the Shoanti scores a telling hit on the Bull-man "Dammit....I thought that thing would last longer than a month..."

As the three barbarians close in for the kill he turns back to Mel

"I've got a job for you...that swine Vancaskerkin..you heard he's got a new place right"

"Yes Guv" the youth tries to avoid looking down towards the bloodbath

"I want you to go have a look, see what 'e's up to...there's sumthin' going down there soon I can feel it in me water. Find out who 'is backers are if yer can"

"Have a look at 'is place, see what's 'appening and who 'is backers are...right Guv...."

"There's some sort of bash there tonight...something about beating the devil...hah that useless sod couldn't beat a two year old..could he boys"

A huge roar erupts, drowning out the lieutenants laughter, as the Minotaur falls taking one of the Shoanti with him. The two survivors stare at each other for a second in disbelief before beginning to acknowledge the crowd.

"Farkin Hell....some one get that hunk of beef out of my arena...and feed it to the tigers. Set up for the elimination bouts."

"Ok ...you've got your job..do alright on this and you're in for good...course if you fail me..." the heavy set mob boss lets the unspoken threat hang in the air

"Don't worry Boss I'll not let you down" the youths words belie the nervous flutter in her stomach

"One more thing...same as usual..if you get's a sniff of that cow Lavender Lil...you let me know at once y'hear"

"Yes Guvner, I know"

"This'll cover your entrance to Van's place"he flips Mel a Gold piece "now get out..I've got a business to run."

Zincher turns to annouce the winners as Mel slips out of the box and down towards the exit

Going to have to try and get in myself I think.

Thanks for the great submission, Wellard. There's a lot of good stuff in there.

Not to worry, hedgeknight, I will be out of town this weekend and for GenCon as well.

Hmmm, definitely interested. I'll have a look through my resources and see what I come up with.

Liberty's Edge

Here's my character concept:

Spoiler:
Name: Ebenadar
Race: Halfling
Classes: Monk

------------------------ Description -----------------------

Ebenadar is a tan, spry looking halfling with sunbleached shoulder-length unkempt, wavy hair and eyes as blue as the sea. He wears a worn but comfortable looking blouse belted over loose britches. The top of the blouse is unlaced and exposes much of his muscular chest.

Full Description

Background
I been a sailor my whole life. I was born in Korvosa, and as my folks weren't too well off, so they sent me as a wee boy to sail on the House Leroung merchant ships and learn my trade. Growing up on the sea made me tough and quick, and I learned to find my place in the ship. It was soon clear that when ya spend months all with a whole buncha halflings in tight quarters you gotta have some code to live by or none of us'd live long. None of us talked about rules, 'neither what we could 'r couldn't do, it was just somethin' we all knew. And there's consequences if'n you go and break that bond. I 'member first time we caught a boy pluckin' apples from a barrel in the hold - 'e got off next port and never saw him again - his ride there was none too pleasant, too!

Years I spent wit none but the sun and sea fer parents, ah, but I did love that sea! She be trecherous and quick to punish, but there ain't no beauty in any land so fair as that great blue lady. Many a dawn an' dusk from the nest I saw...there just ain't no words that can tell what I saw. Then one stop in port cap'n takes on a human. Don't know what made 'em do it, but glad I was he did. I ne'er seen any of the big folk take so kindly to us as 'e did. Strange fellow, 'e was. Never once told us a name to call 'em by. Since only few humans ever came on board, we called 'em giant. Giant was every bit as quick 'n nimble as us wee folk. Once I fell from the rigging - and this feller raced clear from aft ta fore an' caught me! After that 'e took me under his wing - guess giant didn't wanna catch me all the time, so 'e taught me all mannera teachin's. Told me ta balance tha mind ta balance tha body, an' how ta focus yer spirit. Aye, 'e was a good feller. Ha, never did fall again after that. Few years later we took to port an' Giant vanished without'a word. No idea where 'e might be now.

Wit' Giant gone, I was lonely now I had just tha sun an' stars ta talk to, but a sailor lass caught my eye once after I swiched crew. A beauty she was this Bellis, an' strong as any man on board. I set about ta court 'er, an' earned 'er love 'fore we set in fer tha next port. Then nigh a fortnight ago cook says food's gone missin'. Cap'n set extra watches ta catch tha thief, an' late that night when my turn came up, I saw Bellis sneaking into the hold! Ah, but it broke my heart! Next mornin' I marched right ta th' Cap'n ta tell 'im I knew who was takin' the food. I said I jus' coulnd't stand the guilt no more and that I'd been doin' it. They tossed me in tha brig an' let me off at tha next stop. Said Bellis cried a day an' a night outta shame for me.

So 'ere I am in Riddleport, can't work a boat no more. Gotta find work somehow, though.

Aidan Highhill

Spoiler:
Description:Aidan is slightly shorter than most halflings, he is laidback and takes things in stride. Flame colored hair with streaks of orange and gold goes down to his shoulders, sharp in contrast to his pale skin and green eyes. He prefers to use small, light weapons and fire spells to take on a foe(with a create water spell prepared to put out any fires he starts).

History: After accidently setting his caravan leader on fire, Aidan was forced to leave the caravan until he learned control. Though this was supposed to be a punishment, Aidan had been wanting to travel on his own for a long time. He unwittingly join a gang shortly after arriving in Riddleport. He has yet to call an animal companion, wanting to call a dire bat like his older brother Ignatius(another halfling who like fire spells).

Here's the character I used in an immediately-aborted Second Darkness game: Gornak Elf-Toes

Spoiler:
Gornak's father was a orcish grunt in the army of Belkzen, and his mother was a human slave who taught him to sing and dance. Sadly, there was not much appreciation of human-style singing and dancing in Belkzen, so he left to seek his fortune in the West. For a while, he was partners with an elven bard named Treetall Oakleg (specializing in ethnic comedy), but the partnership broke up a couple of months ago.

Gornak is not too bright (although not any dumber than the average orc) but he takes dancing very seriously. Woe betide anyone who criticizes his delicate footwork. He has adopted the mocking name of his fellow orcs ("Elf-Toes") and now wears it as a badge of pride.

Thanks to everyone for their submissions so far. Below you'll find some campaign-specific information, in case you'd like to work it into your character background. They are a mixture of "current events" type info and rumors. They're all from the "Pathfinder Companion: Second Darkness" book.
*
*
The Blot:

Spoiler:
The Blot is a strange and ominous shadow in the sky that looks like nothing so much as a cloud of darkness. The Blot captured the interest of Riddleport’s citizens when it first manifested, but that was months ago—now, after the strange cloud hasn’t done anything particularly dramatic for so long, most folk have grown accustomed to it. Most—but not all; some, such as the Order of Cyphers, remain concerned by the strange cloud, and worry that it may be the harbinger of something worse.

Carnivore Carnage:

Spoiler:
Several Shadde-Quah wavecutters recently washed up on the rocks near the Riddleport Light, their hulls covered in dozens of gashes from teeth and claws. Sailors fear some new predator in the Varisian Gulf or an unseasonable migration of local bunyips.

Lost Below:

Spoiler:
Milon Chath, a cleric of Desna, left to explore several caverns in the nearby Calphiak Mountains more than a week ago and has yet to return. Several Varisians fear the priest has become lost in the labyrinthine caves said to riddle the endless depths below the mountains.

The gambling tournament called "Cheat the Devil and take his gold":

Spoiler:
Held at the recently reopened Gold Goblin Gambling Hall, talk of the tourney has spread throughout the town of Riddleport and has
even reached some taverns in cities as far as Magnimar or even Korvosa. Excitement for the tournament has been building for a month, and now that the day is finally here, people from all over are flocking to take part. The somewhat restrictive entrance fee ironically makes it not possible for many of Riddleport’s own citizens to attend.

Siren Song:

Spoiler:
A band of smugglers recently tried to set up a base at Devil’s Elbow, an island just south of Riddleport’s harbor, but they’ve gone missing. Most blame Virashi, the famed siren of the haunted island, for the disappearance.

Spoiler:
Clifford Strauss is not Riddleport-born but most of his life has beeen here. He is clad as a clerk but it is more usual to see him in a gambling den than in a office . He is gambler enough to frequently win and diplomat enough not to win too much .
Now the opening of a new hall just has to be checked out ...

So far the submissions include three halflings, a half-orc, and a human. Wow, that would make for an interesting group.

Anyone interested in submitting an elf?

Branding Opportunity wrote:

Anyone interested in submitting an elf?

I'll take you up on that.

Name: Sovlanas Tyndrath
Class: Ranger
Race: Elf

Background: Born in the forested realm of his people, Sovlanas' dexterity and moderate intelligence made him an ideal candidate for the Lynathian Acadamae, the school of wizardry found in his realm. However, where he had the skill, he lacked the desire to learn of things mystical. As such, he took up the sword and learned the ways of the scout and ranger. Joining the Elven Scouts, he quickly improved his skill with a blade and his ability to move through the forest. After completing several missions for the elvish Council, he was assigned the task of accompanying a wizard from the Lynathian Acadamae who was being sent to Riddleport to investigate the Blot that had recently formed over the cutthroat city. Packing the few things he possessed, he headed for the city with his charge. However, en route to the city, he and his charge were ambushed by bandits and he wasn't able to defend the elven wizard with him. Disgraced by his inability to defend his charge, he, as elvish custom demanded, took up the mission of his former charge and continued on to Riddleport in hope of discovering the true threat that the Blot presented. Unable to return to his home until his mission was completed.

Having spent a month living among the wilds around Riddleport, Sovlanas finally makes his way into the city itself to see what he can discover.

Here's my character, developed for the same aborted Second Darkness game as Gornak's:

Spoiler:
A native of great Absalom, Sevegny began life as the child of a wealthy merchant and his mistress. So while she was materially well taken care of, as a bastard she had to suffer the moral prejudices of a generally unsympathetic community.

By the time she had come of age she had been drawn to the worship of the elven goddess Calistria. She found the free morality of Calistria's teachings liberating. To her it was a torch that she used to dispel the hypocrisies made her ashamed of herself.

She was a priestess and temple prostitute for a few years until she struck a temple patron for hurting a young postulant. She left the church when they sided with the patron, who not coincidentally was a major contributor.

Sevegny took a lover, a mercenary named Drago. For a year she accompanied him on his adventures and learned from him the skills of violence and deception.

Since then Sevegny has been wandering the lands of the Inner Sea, fighting for coin and fame. And loving, for much the same.

Here's my idea for a human ranger.

Spoiler:
Ngozi is a short, ugly little man who walks with the rolling, bow legged stride of a long time sailor. His rich brown skin is covered with ritualistic scars mixed with an odd assortment of gaudy gold earrings and other bejeweled piercings. He still carries a short, straight spear and a long wooden blowgun, holdovers from his earlier life in the Mwangi Expanse, but he has since picked up and practiced using a large crossbow.

Ngozi once lived in the great ruins of Mzali, deep in the Mwangi Expanse. He was taken from his home years ago when he was captured by another tribe and sold to the slavers of Bloodcove, and from there he was sent, bound in chains with other captives, north to fight and die in the pits for the entertainment of civilized men. Fortunately for Ngozi, the ship was attacked by pirates as it travelled north, and while the entire crew and most of the slaves served only to feed the sharks after the battle, Ngozi’s ability to speak a little Taldane allowed him to beg for his life, trading his future slavery amongst the nobles of the north for a life of slavery to the pirates who spared his life. For 6 years Ngozi served aboard the pirate cutter Besmara’s Blade, until recently the Blade was sunk near Riddleport whilst it was attempting to overtake a Shadde-Quah wavecutter. After boarding the vessel, both ships were attacked from below, but by what Ngozi has no idea. He was knocked unconscious by the Blade’s falling mast, and only has memories of the water being filled with teeth and blood. When he awoke, he was drifting towards the shore south of Riddleport, still entangled with the mast which nearly crushed him yet somehow saved his life.

Since his brush with death, Ngozi has become convinced that both the Mzali child-god, Walkena, and the Pirate Queen Besmara, have blessed him with good fortune. He found his way into Riddleport and now seeks to earn enough coin to purchase passage south. He recently heard about the gambling tournament that is to be held at Saul Vancaskerkin’s Gold Goblin from Ruben Carfay, the leader of the temple of Besmara, with whom he has quickly become friends. It was Carfay that suggested that Ngozi put his new found luck to good use and enter the tournament, and was kind enough to put up the entrance fee in exchange for swapping stories over a few drinks.

Sorry, this one was the druid. I can just as easily change it though, he's just has the Fire Bloodline. Though getting a dire bat familiar is going to be impossible... :)

Grovak, Half-Orc Druid of Gozreh
Grovak was born the product of violence, war, and savagery. A nearby orc tribe had raided a camp of humans on the eve of his conception---he was the result of a brief meeting of his unnamed father, an orcish warrior, and his mother, a cleric of Erastil.
Although Grovak gained the wisdom and patience of his mother, the savegry of his Orcish heritage bled through. His heart grew heavy as he was continually the subject of much ridicule and rejection among the humans his mother was trying to raise him amongst. Even his own mother's face was heavy with pain and suffering every time she looked upon him. She did her best to love him, as a mother should love her only son, but Grovak knew what he was---a burden, and worse, a constant reminder of her rape from the Orc raid. Although neither terribly intelligent, nor good with people at all, Grovak knew, by instinct, that he would never be welcome by this human society---not even his own mother would ever truly come to accept him as her own.
At the age of 8, Grovak packed up what few belongings he had and left, with new clue. He lived his life by one law, may the strongest survive. He lived off of nature and found that in nature, he was not judged for his heritage, but respected for his wisdom and power...
One day, while bathing in a stream, Gozreh appeared before him, her form drawn within the water, pressing against Grovak's body...She whispered into his ear, "Dear Grovak...so much pain...yet so much power...you've found a home within my realm, and have learned to respect the land and its inhabitants as they respect you..."
"Not all would share your concern, my dear Grovak," She continued as her hand rose to caress Grovak's cheek, "there are...unnatural forces at work, and nature requires a protector..."
Grovak continued to tred water, almost entranced by Gozreh's avatar...he knew that this was his calling and accepted Gozreh's blessing...
Now he wanders the forest, living off the land and protecting nature from outsiders who would prey upon it unfairly. His years away from society as a hermit has caused his speech to become somewhat broken and simple, but his eyes are still fierce and quick. He is not bound by the conventions of what is "good" and what is "evil," but instead he lives by the natural order. He believes there is a balance to things and that balance must be perserved... He is patient, and knows how to keep himself in check when required, but when either he or those he has designated as part of his "pack" become threatened, he is quick to unleash his savagery. He realizes that strength comes in many form, whether it be the strength of a warriors club, or the power unleased by a learned wizard, but has little patience for those that thoroughly weak. He has a general respect for natural life, and will generally help those that cannot help themselves if they do not deserve what is happening to them---but generally more out of pity than actually concern.
(Anyway, Grovak will be a LN Half-Orc druid, not much of a people person---nor is particularly intelligent---raised on his own, he relies on his instincts to survive. Blessed by Gozreh with the sacred charge to protect the land, that is the capacity he serves. Wary of the blot, Gozreh has sent Grovak to Riddleport to inspect the blot...)

Here's my character proposal > Thumparr Ironfist, Dwarven Fighter.

Spoiler:
No one likes a good fight like Thumparr Ironfist. In fact, that is the reason he is no longer welcome in his home town of Janderhoff, nor in Crystalrock, nor in any of the other Dwarven settlements in and around the Mindspin Mountains.
Seems he was too busy brawling and not busy enough smelting copper ore like the rest of his family and friends. Going into the "family business" just didn't sit well with the young Dwarf and he took out his frustrations on anyone who pissed him off. He just felt he was born for something different, something...better.
So, after a heated exchange with his Ma and Da, he decided to set out and see what life outside a hole in the ground had to offer. Turns out, it has a whole hell of a lot to offer!
He traveled downriver to Magnimar, and then booked passage on a ship crossing the Varisian Bay, bound for the seedy city of Riddleport. He's only been in town about a month and he's running short on coin; he has to find some kind of work soon or he'll be living in the streets.
He's already been in a scrap or two but he's only been thrown out of one bar...so far.
But, he likes it in Riddleport, even if the damned Blot gives him the creeps. "Sommat ain't right about that," he mutters just about every time he looks up at it. And he's heard tell of all kinds of strange goings on lately - disappearances, murders, shady dealings. It all adds up in his mind and he figures this city is on the verge of imploding. And there's nowhere else in Varisia that he'd rather be than right here, right now! Something big is about to happen and he's gonna get in on it...or die trying.

After some deliberation, here are my choices for the PCs for my Second Darkness PbP game:

'Mel' Evendale, Human Rogue (Wellard)
Ebenadar, Halfing Monk (Count Buggula)
Gornak Elf-Toes, Half-Orc Bard (Hogarth)
Sovlana Tyndrath, Elven Ranger (dathom)
Sevegny Vailstar, Human Cleric (JZ)
Ngozi, Human Ranger (Crazy Eights)
Grovak, Half-Orc Druid (Kjob)
Thumparr Ironfist, Dwarven Fighter (hedgeknight)

Alternates:
Aidan Highhill, Halfling Sorcerer (Dragonborn3)
Clifford Strauss, Halfling Rogue (robin)

Thanks again to everyone for your submission. Please be aware, alternates, that due to the high number of PCs there is a statistically higher chance of someone dropping out. I'll post in this thread if that happens.

This conversation continues in the OOC Thread!
