”Aye, that be the way to do it. Goblin’s idea of a fair fight is three against your one, and then only if you’re caught unaware.” He spent many months training to fight this ancient enemy.

The fine people of Brindenford don’t seem to know they have goblins right on their doorstep thinks Kolgun . . .Or they don’t care. Either way, it could mean serious trouble.

He looks at Thel, "What do you have in mind?"

"My opinion would start with the first room on the left." Room 1b She draws her small rapier, "That was the room I heard a mixture of common and goblin speak."

"Let's surround the door, have Bengal here quietly open the door, and we get any ranged attacks in before they can react. Slip inside, lock the door behind us to make sure none of them can sneak around to our flanks, and be done with the little hellions."

Thel stands even more at attention, his training kicking in without a moments hesitation.

Liberty's Edge

Just wanted to check in as I haven't had anything to say in a bit, and let you all know that I am still watching this thread. Also, I wanted to make sure Jayden was still with us since its been about a day and a half since I heard from him. No worries if stuff just came up, I just wanted to make sure we haven't lost you.

Male Gnome Wizard-1

Aldrin spouts a few arcane words, performs an odd gesture, and a brief flash of blue in the form of armor surrounds him and quickly fades. (Casting Mage armor) "Well, I'm about as ready as I can be. Your plan sounds solid, so lets be rid of them as fast as we can."

Just as a heads up, i'm gonna be busy sunday all day. I'll try to jump on some time monday, but I've got a DnD game to go to sunday evening, and then i'm driving up to LA to take care of some business. If combat starts for some reason, my Initiative is +2, and my to hit with my crossbow is +3. I'll default to the crossbow unless a tough humanoid creature is being a problem, in which case Aldrin would cast 'Reduce Person'. well, hopefully cya all monday!

Male Dwarven Cleric / 1st Level

Kolgun readies his shield, takes a firm grip on his hammer, and says

”Yes, let’s take the fight to them. I’m not one for throwing things at the foe, but when we rush in I’ll deal with them, by Torag's beard.”

Male Human Swashbuckler 1

Thel moves forward, being as quiet as possible 1d20+4=24 (stealth) [Yeah!! Natural 20].

Moved my 'mini' just below the door into room 1b

Liberty's Edge

Alright, since it sounds like you have set your tactics, go ahead and posistion yourselves near the door and give me initiative rolls. I'll go ahead and make the rolls and post initiative order for anyone who hasn't posted yet tonight. Also, who is going to be the one to open the door?

Male Human Swashbuckler 1

Thel places the torch on the ground behind him, and pulls out a twin-set of daggers. Spinning the hilts in his palms, he stands ready, waiting for the door to open.

Initiative: 1d20+3=19

Bengal seems to be the sneakiest of our group, but if she doesn't post by the time you're ready, I'll open the door.

Male Dwarven Cleric / 1st Level

I can open the door since I don’t need to ready a range weapon and shoot into the room . . .

Kolgun steps up next to the door, preparing to open it once his friends are ready. After they've loosed their arrows he’ll dash in (if that’s what you can call it when a dwarf moves quickly) and engage one of the goblins.

Initiative (+1)= (1d20+1=9)

Male Human Swashbuckler 1

Since Kolgun's opening the door then, I'll ready an action to attack anything that comes within 5 feet of the door.

If we get a surprise round, I'll step into the room and attack the first bad guy that I see.

M Human

Greetings,

I hate to be a pain in the rear-end but I have to bail on this game. Things just got really crazy in real life with having to take classes and job search while working a full time job. That of course doesn't leave me with much time on my hands so I won't be able to continue with the game. I'm really sorry about this.

Regards,
Aaron Whitley

P.S. I also posted this on the discussion thread too.

Liberty's Edge

Fair enough, real life does have to come first in these things. Good luck on your job hunt, Jayden. As to everyone else, it looks like we had two folks who were interested in joining up as well, presuming that they are still keeping an eye on the other thread. Is it going to be too much of a break in suspension of disbelief to swap out Jayden with a new player, since we aren't too far in and you aren't likely to go back to town otherwise? If it is, then it wouldn't be too much trouble to work in someone who has been caught in the dungeon or the like at some other point. Let me know what you think. And I'll give about another hour and then I'll be posting for initiative.

Female Tibbit Rogue 1 (Favored class Rogue)

Initiative: 1d20+4=6

She goes up to stand next to Thel, waiting to attack what decides to come out.

Liberty's Edge

Initiative for Aldrin Initiative 1d20+2=21

Initiative order:

Aldrin 21
Thel 19
Kolgun 19
Bengal 6
Enemies 3(they all have the same bonus, so I rolled once for the group)

Pulling open the door reveals a small room containing seven beds and littered with sacks of food. The air is foul there, stinking of sweat and filth.

Within the room are three goblins, two kobolds, and two degenerate humans. The humans look like what you would expect of a caveman, large and muscular but dim-witted. One of the goblins wears a necklace of animal claws across his chest and looks to be the leader.

The group is armed and looks ready for battle, but obviously were caught off guard by your sudden entrance.

Go ahead and take a surprise round, though Kol used his action to open the door. If you also want to post what your first round action will be, with any alternatives in case the enemy you are facing dies, it will speed things up since they go after every one of you.

Aldrin levels his heavy crossbow once the door is open and fires off a shot into the room within, missing wildly. Attack and damage1d20+3=4, 1d8=8 Assuming the room hasn't been cleared by his next turn and none of the group has been hurt, he'll spend his next turn reloading.

I don't mind either way.

Male Human Swashbuckler 1

Thel steps into the room, attacking the first mongoloid human, spinning his daggers in a mad flurry. The first sinks into the degenerate's shoulder, blood spraying as the dagger is extracted from the wound with a violent twisting, to ensure blood loss. The second seems to only glance across it's chest, and Thel, unaccustomed to fighting more than a target dummy, is dumbfounded his attack didn't connect solidly.

Two Dagger Attacks: 1d20+3=21, 1d20+3=11
Two Damage Rolls: 1d6+1=6, 1d6+1=4

Round 2
Proposed tactic: Continue attacking the humanoids, leaving room for the rest of the party to gain entry into the room.

As far as bringing in another player, would be weird mid-battle, unless they were following us or something. Doesn't really make much difference though.

Male Dwarven Cleric / 1st Level

Kolgun sees his friends are ready, and shoulders the door open. He hears the “click – twang” of the heavy crossbow, as they’d planned. What he didn’t plan on was the ”whoooosh" as the bolt flew past his ear and connected violently on the far wall. Keep your head lower, he thinks.

He gets a firm grip on his shield and prepares to take the fight to the derelicts inside. . . . .

Tactic: If Thel's opponent is still standing when my turn comes up again in the next round (we're in the surprise round, yes?) I'll help finish him.

I'm sure there's a prisoner kept inside one of the rooms we've yet to enter. Or, they're following us. Tarlane, you've spun a good tale so far, we trust you

Liberty's Edge

Sounds good to me guys, I figured we had a couple days before anyone else would be ready to join in anyway, so I wasn't thinking to drop them into the middle of a fight. But with things moving slowly in a pbp, I figured it would be difficult to place them too far in. I think I do have a good spot for someone to join though that will be up soon.

Reacting as soon as the door is pulled open and the crossbow goes off, Thel's dagger sinks neatly into the chest of the thing that could be called human. It remains standing, looking barely on its feet, but its eyes are filled with anger at the pain rather then fear.

Also, with the surprise round you just get a single move or a standard, I don't mind you guys getting in there and making your attacks, but you wouldn't have gotten a full round. Second attack missed in any case so it doesn't matter much, just trying to make the rules consistant. Bengal is up next, then the round starts over with Aldrin reloading. If you guys want to roll your attacks when you see this, I can put in the fluff of what happens after she posts, since there will still be at least one of the degenerate humans up still, even if she drops one.

Female Tibbit Rogue 1 (Favored class Rogue)

Bengal moves up next to Thel, attempting to strike at the same enemy as Thel, though missing widely. She lets out a growl in anger.

1d20+5, 1d4+1, 1d6=[4,5], [1,1], [6]

Male Dwarven Cleric / 1st Level

Kolgun's attack / damage:

1d20+2=6, 1d8+2=9

bah, rolled great in test mode (suuuure you did)

Liberty's Edge

Wow, Invisible Castle is being rather fickle recently. Just have to hope it stays that way for the enemies.

Female Tibbit Rogue 1 (Favored class Rogue)

On her turn, Bengal will try to strike the same person if Thel does not bring him down. If that enemy is killed, she will then attack the human next to him.

1d20+5=19, 1d4+1=4, 1d6=1

Male Human Swashbuckler 1

Thel continues his assault on the degenerate human if it's already dead by the time my init comes around again, will move [L20-->K19] and turn to the second one.

Burying his daggers in its chest, he rips them out in a crude X pattern, tearing the ribcage apart.

===== Attack Rolls =====
1d20+3=23, 1d20+3=19
Confirm Crit: (first attack roll) 1d20+3=15

===== Damage Rolls =====
1d4+1=3, 1d4+1=5

===== Extra Damage From Possible Crit
1d4+1=3

Liberty's Edge

Cutting easily through the already wounded Degenerate Human with his first dagger, Thel steps over the man, even as he falls, sinking his second dagger deep into the one just behind it.

I moved you on the map, Kolgun, so you could reach the second. You weren't going to provoke any attacks of opportunity since they haven't acted yet, so I didn't think you would mind.

Kolgun releases the door and rushes forward, sweeping high with his warhammer, but the caveman, surprised by the wound it has just suffered, stumbles back just enough to dodge.

Unfortunately it didn't count on Bengal having crept up beside Thel. The point of her rapier pierces the creature cleanly, collapsing him in a heap.

The remaining goblins and kobolds seem very warlike, even for their species however, and must have been on guard as they already have their weapons close at hand. The goblin leader shrieks out a command to the others

Goblin

Spoiler:
Kill them! Blood for the Beast God!

And they press forward in a mass to attack, swinging wildly with their weapons, the goblins wielding morningstars while the kobolds hold spears. Two of the goblins and one of the kobolds make a strike against Thel, who nimbly dodges out of the way of two hits, but with so many attacks coming in at him it is only a matter of time before one of them lands, the goblin leader striking Thel painfully below the waist.

Thel, 1 damage and make a DC 10 fort save. If you fail, look below.

Spoiler:
The low blow leaves you Dazed for 1 round

Finally the remaining kobold lashes out at the dwarf with his spear, narrowly missing, and the last goblin takes a swipe at Bengal, snarling angrily but missing widely.

Female Tibbit Rogue 1 (Favored class Rogue)

On my turn:

She glares at the goblin in front of her, lunging with her rapier and hoping to pierce the foe with her blade.

1d20+5=14, 1d4+1=5

Liberty's Edge

Ok, so thats the bottom of the round. Here is our standing initiative now:
Aldrin
Thel
Kolgun
Bengal
Baddies

I hope that last post works out for you, I tend to find that if I let you guys post as you come on and then piece it all together in a more cinematic way like that in the right order it keeps the flow of combat up better. So as long as you give me your primary option and a backup option in case that changes, then that should work well. If combat ever really changes mid-round(new enemies appear, or a spell, or a bad hit or something) then I will pause things so you can revise your actions before I add the rest of the fluff. Does that work for everyone?

Male Dwarven Cleric / 1st Level

that works fine for me, so when it's my turn . . .

Kolgun’s blood burns to reach the goblin a few steps from him, however there’s a kolbold in the way . . . .

He swings his warhammer

1d20+2=15, 1d8+2=7

Tarlane wrote:

Fort Save: 1d20+3=10

Thel grunts with the pain of the strike, but shrugs it off, and without missing a beat, moves to make his next attack.

Maybe a notice letting us know when the round is over...I think I may have taken an extra turn when I wasn't supposed to.

Male Human Swashbuckler 1

Next Round:

Noticing the blood trickling, Thel states to the humanoids, "That's just not playing nice at all, now is it?" and turns his attention to the kobold in front of him (j19), bringing his daggers up in a tight arc, the two blades opening twin gashes along the creature's torso.

===== Combat Rolls =====
Full Attack 1d20+3=23, 1d20+3=21
Confirm Crit First Attack 1d20+3=21

Damage Rolls 1d4+1=4, 1d4+1=3
Extra Damage For Crit 1d4+1=4

===== Alternate =====
Will target enemies in this order, starting with J19, and working on them in order (depending on what targets are left when init comes up this round)--J19 (primary), K18, K20, L20.

Liberty's Edge

You are good so far Thel, you guys surprised the goblins, and then I rolled terribly for initiative. So basically you got your surprise attack on them, and then you got your first round on them before they went. I'll try and always let you guys know who is coming up whenever I post, and I'll point out when a new round starts(in my last post, you'll notice I said 'bottom of the round, so our initiative order is...)

Just have to hear from Aldrin since he is first up, and I'll post up the next round.

Liberty's Edge

Looking at Aldrin's last post, I think he might still be out of town and he didn't manage to get on yesterday like he was hoping to. He mentioned that he would be just defaulting to his crossbow if combat was going while he was gone unless there was a particularly big bad guy, so I'm going to run with that for the moment to keep things moving.

Having finished reloading his heavy crossbow, Aldrin moves up a bit closer so he has a clear line of fire at the goblin leader who is flanking Thel. He squares up his crossbow as this will be a harder shot since the creature is already in close combat with the dual weilder, but his kind know well how to fight these beasts.

He squeezes the trigger and the shot sails wide again, the bolt between the two goblins directly in front of them and passing far too close to the rest of the group. Shooting goblin (1d20+0=6, 1d8+0=3)

Even as the bolt whizzes by, Thel seems to have gotten caught up in his training and moves with precision, driving his first dagger into the kobold before him, dropping the beast with a single blow and then plunging his second dagger into the shoulder of the kobold beside him, leaving the reptile looking as if its barely on its feet.

That the kobold is still standing is quickly remedied by the dwarf who brings down his warhammer in a crushing blow on its head, crumpling it into a heap on the floor.

In the chaos of the combat, Bengal thrusts forward with her rapier, nearly piercing through the goblin in her way, but his surprised jerk away from the bolt that flew by his head seconds before leaves the point of her blade simply scraping past his leather armor.

Seeing one of their hated foes, the goblin the the back advances on the dwarf, swinging forcefully with his morningstar. The blow is true and its fortunate that the dwarf is so well armored or it could have been a grave injury indeed(crit chance, didn't back).

Seeing their chances to strike at the one who is proving to be so skilled with his blades, the other two goblins move to once again surround Thel, each taking a chance to strike as they five foot step into place, but both clumbsy swings being parried away easily.

Kolgun, you take 4 damage from the blow the goblin gave you.

That puts us at the bottom of the round again. So far there hasn't been any real sign of movement from the other two rooms yet, the thick stone walls likely do a good job of muffling much of the sound, and in the room thats closest to you it had sounded like the occupents were sleeping before, so it would take more to wake them up.

The initiative order for this round is just as it was above:
Aldrin
Thel
Kolgun
Bengal
Baddies

I try to keep from running players characters too much because there is a lot of flavor in how the players post their own actions, so even though Alrin said he didn't mind if I did so, hopefully he'll be back and put up a post by the time everyone else has made their announcements for the round. But so fair this seems to be going pretty smoothly. You guys work well as a team.

Male Dwarven Cleric / 1st Level

I'm off to work soon, so here's my next round, after Alrin and Thel have had their turns, of course.

Kolgun grunts from the force of the blow, but welcomes the goblin’s advance to pay him back in kind . . . .

With a silent prayer to Torag he brings his hammer around, using a technique he learned in the proving grounds of the Five Kingdoms:

1d20+3=17, 1d8+2=4

Male Human Swashbuckler 1

Thel sees the goblins trying to surround him, parrying their feeble attempts at striking him. With his training kicking in, he attacks the first humanoid (k18), and spins around to jab the second (k20).

===== Combat Rolls =====
Full Attack 1d20+3=6, 1d20+3=17

Damage Rolls 1d4+1=2, 1d4+1=3

===== Alternate =====
If k18 and k20 are already dead, will attack j19.

Female Tibbit Rogue 1 (Favored class Rogue)

On her turn, Bengal will tumble over so that she is flanking with Thel and attack the goblin with her rapier.

Tumble: 1d20+8=27

1d20+7=17, 1d4+1=4, 1d6=3

Male Gnome Wizard-1

Cursing under his breath "Why don't the filthy beasts ever hold still?" Alrin concentrates for a second, and points his finger at the creature he had been firing at, and a small glob of acid springs from his outstretched fingers and snakes out toward the creature. "Perhaps a little acid will be more to your liking, you little cur!"

Firing at the goblin at k20.

Ranged Touch Attack (1d20+0=11, 1d3=2)

Liberty's Edge

Thel swings at the creature before him, his dagger scraping along its shield. In a heartbeat he whirls and drives his dagger into the goblin leaders arm just as Aldrin lets fly with his acid splash. Unfortunately this causes the goblin to skip back a step away from the blow, leaving the acid to fly and splatter against the far wall.

In the far corner of the room, given an opening by Thel's failed strike, the dwarf is able to get his warhammer past the goblins guard, bashing solidly into his collarbone, so that when the goblin turns to raise its morningstar in retalliation its arm gives out, the weight of its own weapon dropping it into a heap on the ground.

Taking advantage of the goblin leader's surprise, Bengal slides behind him, driving her rapier cleanly through his back so that its tip extends from his chest. He lets out a gurgling warcry even as he slides off the blade to the floor below.

The final goblin, seeing the carnage around him and the fall of his brethren does something surprising for one of his kind, he swipes out at thel again as if he were in a frenzy lunging forward fearlessly with a cry:

Goblin

Spoiler:
"Your blood will feed the beast god!"

His morningstar manages to glance off Thel's brow, doing superficial damage but enough to leave his ears ringing.

Thel, you take two damage. Make a DC 10 fort save, if you fail, look below.

Spoiler:
The goblin delivered a 'low blow'(or in this case a high one) and you are dazed for one round.

There is still silence from the hallway behind you, things could be stiring in the other rooms, but there hasn't been any obvious response to your actions so far so its possible that no one has noticed.

That puts us at the bottom of the round, this one should be finished off pretty quick with just the one goblin left. Our order hasn't changed from above:
Aldrin
Thel
Kolgun
Bengal
Poor goblin

Also I realized that in the description above I shifted some order of actions a bit, but that was just for flavor, in the way I considered the attacks as hit or miss Aldrin acted before Thel and the goblin that collapsed(due to being disabled when trying to attack) was after Bengal. Just didn't change anything in the fluff to shift it that way and the flow sounded better for it. I just wanted to make a point of noting that, since I will do that from time to time, but I do keep things in order mechanically.

Female Tibbit Rogue 1 (Favored class Rogue)

If the goblin has not been brought down by the time it's her turn, Bengal will once again move so that she is flanking with Thel and attack.

1d20+7=16, 1d4+1=2, 1d6=4

Male Gnome Wizard-1

Aldrin steps up beside Thel and Kolgun, and lets loose another burst of acid. "It seems I need to spend a bit more time with target practice, and a little less time in the lab! Well, more time with target practice anyways. I could never leave the lab for too long."

Attacks the goblin at J19

Ranged Touch Attack 1d20+0=14, 1d3=2

Male Human Swashbuckler 1

Fort Save 1d20+3=22

Thel takes the attack full on, a wicked smile creeping across his lips. "Now it's my turn," and drives his first dagger into the goblin's shoulder, then crouching down and slashing at it's throat with the second.

===== Attack Rolls =====
Full Attack 1d20+3=11, 1d20+3=19 Edit: +2 for each - flanking Ignore flanking

===== Damage Rolls =====
1d4+1=5, 1d4+1=4

Female Tibbit Rogue 1 (Favored class Rogue)

We're not flanking yet Thel, you go before me.

Liberty's Edge

I noticed her moving around on the map and I was just commenting to myself that I could see that was going to be a flaw in this method of mapping since it was easy to get confused over and someone might move into a spot that someone who goes earlier in the round could want to take. Do you guys want me to take over moving you and you just let me know where you want to move when your turn comes up, so that doesn't end up happening, or do you just want to play a bit fast and loose with that sort of stuff for now? I know being able to move yourself on the map gives at least a bit of the battlemat feel, so I'm ok with that if it works for everyone else.

The goblin steps back slightly with a look of satisfaction in its rage filled eyes, then it lets out a screech as it is surprised by the glob of acid that strikes against its cheek, sizzling flesh. Raising its shield reflexively it manages to parry away Thel's first dagger, but the second pushes under the shield and between its ribs, silencing its screams as it drops lifeless to the floor.

With the fight over and no reinforcements on the way we can drop back out of the round by round thing and let you guys return to chatting freely. I'm going to spoiler the loot list of what you uncover on the bodies below just so it doesn't spam up the post more then my rambling already does.

LOOT

Spoiler:

Falchion(medium) x2
Javelin(medium) x2
Studded Leather(medium) x2
Morningstar(small) x3
Spear(small) x2
Javelin(small) x3
Sling(small) x2
Leather Armor(small) x5
Light Wooden Shield(small) x3
Necklace made of animal claws

Female Tibbit Rogue 1 (Favored class Rogue)

Yay small stuff. Too bad I wouldn't actually use any of those.

Male Human Swashbuckler 1

Thel looks over the weapons, and dismisses them. Cleaning off his daggers, he sheaths them, and proceeds to search the room for anything more valuable than a bone necklace..

Perception (sight) 1d20+1=18

"Someone keep an eye on that hallway. Combat rule #34: There's never only one group of filthy humanoids underground."

Just a minor slip-up on the combat maneuvering there. It should work out okay with doing a recap of combat. We should probably avoid adding any combat mods...would mean more work for the DM, but would result in fewer slip-ups. :)

Female Tibbit Rogue 1 (Favored class Rogue)

She nods, "Yes, that is good advice. We don't know if someone in one of the other rooms heard us fighting."

She goes over to stand in the doorway to keep watch.

Liberty's Edge

There doesn't appear to be much else in this room besides the crude beds and a couple of sacks of food that most in the party would find completely inedible. However as Thel pokes around a bit more he manages to uncover a small pouch buried beneath a pile of furs being used as filth encrusted covers. The pouch contains 34 silver pieces.

Woohoo, you are rolling in the money at this rate. Just to let you guys know, the loot tends to be pretty well spread out in this dungeon. There are some really -really- good scores, so don't get disheartened when you hit smaller patches of coin like this.

As far as the placement goes, I think that sounds like a great idea and even if it means a bit more figuring on my end I think I would actually prefer to do the modifiers myself. It lets me be a bit mysterious if there is a modifier at work that you aren't aware of and it means that there won't be the chance that we count the same modifiers twice. So for instance I noticed that Aldrin was already giving himself the penalty for not having precise shot. You won't need to worry about that, I'll take care of that stuff in the future, just stick with your unchanging modifiers(ability, spells, feats, ect)

Also, if you want to keep track of XP on your own you can, though I will let everyone know when you level. For that fight you each picked up 255xp. Monte suggested that you go a bit slower then the standard 3.5 level progression just because there are quite a few fights and you don't want to out level the expected challenge of a floor too quickly, so I am a bit torn on what progression rate I am going to advance you all at. It is likely to be the middle one, though I will let you know for sure once I see how quickly you are advancing along. Its also possible that I may let you advance a bit more quickly now(particularly if we don't get a 5th member anytime soon, though I'm pretty ok with 4, you are a solid party) and then slow things down some once you are a couple levels up and more survivable that way we can keep things a challenge and really let you explore the dungeon.

Male Human Swashbuckler 1

Thel looks over the grimy coins, and wipes them clean before dropping them into a pouch. "A slow start, but we've got something to show for my scratches."

When you say the middle one for XP, do you mean the Medium advancement? 2,000 xp for level 2?

Male Dwarven Cleric / 1st Level

Kolgun examines the armor and weapons. . .

Don't worry, Aldrin. We're not much worse for the wear, and you didn't blow us up!

I think it would be a good idea to forge on before their ilk discover our presence.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, I want to wait and see how quickly you are gaining XP before I give a firm answer as to what experience chart to use. With there being like 30-40 rooms on most floors, I don't want you to be on room four and leveling, but I also don't want things seeming to drag too long before you get to advance, since I know that is hard enough on a play by post.

Kol's Knowledge Religion

Spoiler:
The Beast God is a very minor diety of ferocity and blood that is worshipped by certain fanatical monstrous humanoids. Dark and savage, the Beast God calls upon the primal, bestial nature of his followers, encouraging them to revel in blood and violence.

The Beast God is Chaotic Evil. His domains are Chaos, Evil, and Destruction. His favored weapon is a battle axe.

Many people suspect that he is really just an avatar of Lamashtu or instead just a powerful follower of hers who revels in some of her specific aspects.

Male Human Swashbuckler 1

Disgusted by the squallor in this room, Thel goes back out into the hallway, and listens at the far door (room 1a).

If he hears anything, he'll signal the rest of the party.
