In the exotic nation of Katapesh, a land of fortune and wonders, heroes are those with the courage to command their destinies. Such wisdom leads a daring band to the abandoned village of Kelmarane with the hopes of re-establishing a once prosperous community.
But the village belongs to a savage tribe of gnolls and their leader, the Carrion King.
Can the players retake the village from its feral conquerors or is Kelmarane to be the first of many to be ravaged?
Here is the discussion thread for Howl of the Carrion King.
This is the place to discuss the game, characters, real life issues and post warnings for when you may not be free to join in for a holiday or whatever. Firstly the Discussion thread will allow us all to get to know each other better.
Feel free to introduce yourselves, since a couple of the guys may need everyone’s help in getting up to speed with the way pbps play out. I should point out that I already know a few of you from other games but certainly not everyone.
The six players at the minute are scranford, therealthom, Rimrock, Greyworker, Michael fox 630 and Brett1815.
The reserves are hopeless, Wrath, robin and Jared Ouimette.
Rules
We will be using Pathfinder Beta until the autumn and then I’ll probably transfer over to the new rules.
Character Generation
Other details already mentioned but worth repeating;
1) Hit points will be maximum plus standard modifiers (Con, favoured class, Toughness) plus a flat bonus for every PC of 6pts.
2) Starting wealth to be rolled for by the player.
3) Every character gets two traits (which are a bit like half-feats). One campaign trait which is the most important because it ties you to the Adventure Path and the other a Basic Trait. The Pathfinder Companion for Legacy several Basic Traits outlined under Region, Race and Religion. There are more Basic traits which could be adapted from the free web supplement that came out recently.
4) Also this Adventure Path introduces Achievement Feats. Here are seven of these and they represent long term aims for the PC to achieve to gain the benefits. I shall leave it up to the individual player to account for these.
5) Stats – Either it is 20 point buy or you can roll for your stats. If you want to roll dice then roll 4d6, drop the lowest, do that seven times and drop the lowest total. Then assign as you wish.
6) Experience will be on the fast track, because pbps tend to be slow.
7) Standard Pathfinder races only
8) Standard Pathfinder classes only
9) No evil characters or any others which will not co-operate with the group. This is a team sport in which everyone gets a chance to shine.
Background
Every character needs to fit into the land of Katapesh in the world of Golarion. This is a land of deserts, genies, bazaars etc. The Legacy of Fire Players Guide has sufficient information to help fit your character into the land. If you don’t have this then don’t worry you create a background and I can help fit you in. Also, in April, a further Guide to Katapesh will be on sale from Paizo.
House Rules
When rolling hit points for higher levels the player can choose to re-roll but must take the second roll whatever it is.
Initiative I will probably roll myself or get the next player to roll for each guy. This is just to speed up play.
DM’s decision is final. Keep any rules discussion off the game thread and here in the discussion thread please.
Game Etiquette
Read and post as frequently as you can. I believe that the best games on the boards are busy ones, with people posting at least daily and sometimes more than that. At the weekend that is not such an issue as I understand we all have lives outside of this.
But let me know if you are going to be away for a while. The worse thing that can happen is if someone just stops posting.
If we have a fight or important piece of roleplay waiting for one player, then the delay can spoil things, so I may need to NPC that person just to keep things flowing.
Although I shall use the scenario I may change things from time to time. If you are running or just reading the Adventure Path outside of the game then that’s fine by me. Let me know if that is the case though too. Also try to make sure you keep the player and character knowledge separate for the game.
Feel free to roll your own dice, use an online roller or what you prefer. I won’t require dice rolls to be proved, or need invisible castle links.
Out of character text should be written using the bracketed ooc] and [/ooc] to make it easy to separate. Similarly bold bracketed b] and [/b] text can be used for speech or just to highlight an important point. There are others but these are the main ones used and I am sure people will get the hang of this.
I am handicapped by a hatred of technology where e-maps are concerned, but I’m trying to overcome this with Photoshop and who knows how long that may take me. Until then maps will be either in the form of battle grids for people to construct at home, or my own pen and paper efforts which are passable at best. If we are using a battlegrid then please remember to post your position whenever you move.
The Party
The next step is for everyone to sort out their characters. A balanced party is very important because there is plenty for everyone, especially combat and roleplay.
Cheers

Hey, guys. Very happy to be playing with you. French Wolf has Dm'ed a PbP for me before and he's the real deal. This will be an awesome game.
Hello too to Scranford and Rimrock. I believe we've run into each other in some abortive PbPs. Good to be playing with you again.
Tossing a couple ideas around in my mind. Scalliwag rogue or maybe a cleric of Erastil. The cleric would be more of a "mountain man" than anything, maybe shade him into ranger a bit. I'm just happy playing and will take any role if the party needs it.
'Wolf. I rolled 2 sets of scores. 6x best of 4d6. The first was pretty low; I assumed he'd be hopeless. Second was better, with a couple low scores. I'm assuming I can go with those.

Welcome one and all, Mwah ha ha.
I re-read the first adventure last night and its a cracker. So let's get these PCs sorted and hit the wilds of Katapesh.
The first posters show their hands;
scranford is making a fighter
Brett a cleric
Rimrock a conjurer (I play a dwarf bard in one game, he is a spy/clumsy fat guy not sure how a half-orc would work as well)
therealthom - remember if you roll you get an seventh roll of 4d6 and drop one set.
Good luck and speak to you guys later.

BTW, therealthom, we are in Fakey's Last Hope game together.
That's right, Abe my man! We need to post more in that discussion thread so that I can better associate the players with the PCs.
FW thanks for the reminder on the dice.
Fighter, arcane, and rogue covered....
Brett, do you mind doubling up on cleric? I was fooling around with concepts yesterday and kept coming back to playing a cleric of Erastil. He won't be too much of a cleric though. He's a low charisma desert rat with "gnoll killer" trait. I'll probably multi-class him with ranger down the road. Secondary melee, support caster.
French Wolf |
Brett has just been round to roll some dice and look at the Legacy of Fire Guide book.
He is going to play a human cleric of Abadar. As the DM who loves playing clerics, I'd be happy to see a party with more than one "proper" healer, TT.
Yep, Brett is someone I DM in real life, but I will not hold it against him. Much.
Cheers

Hey All,
I've also played with Andy in real life and I can tell you that there is a very good reason why he is called "Red Glenn." I reckon if we all generate three or four characters each we should be okay for the first adventure (or so)...
Anyway, I rolled stats for the dwarven rogue and got:
13, 9, 16, 5, 12, 15, 14.
I'll drop the 5 which leaves me with a pretty solid:
13, 9, 16, 12, 15, 14
With the dwarven racial modifiers this gives me
S 13
D 16
C 17 (15 + 2)
I 14
W 14 (12 + 2)
CH 7 (9 - 2)
That work, Andy?
French Wolf |
Yes, less of the Andy and more of the FW please though.
Most of the other guys have no idea who this Andy character is and I'd prefer to keep it that way. You never know who might be at the next Con....
The dwarf rogue will fit right in. With six PCs, including two clerics, I am sure you guys will do fine.
Cheers

Well the dice were pretty good to me until the end. Erizi might be strong as a Osirion Dire Camel, but he's going to be as ugly and ornery as one too.
18,16,13,16,11,6,6
I'm leaning towards the "Earning your Freedom" trait, as that might help explain his appearance (Nose bitten off by a Gnoll, and has an Iron fake nose), and lack of social grace. Maybe a Pit Fighter slave, who ended up saving his masters life, and was given this opportunity to earn his freedom. Of course the chance that his master (Merchant) has of making a ton of money off the new trading partner, has nothing to do with his decision to free Eziri.
Brett1815 |
I'm heading towards the "Seeking Adventure" at the moment and the Wayfinder may prove useful! The Cleric for hire idea is in my mind, but not a full on mercenary if get what I mean?
I recommend that you all buy a healing potion each if you can.
As and when we obtain treasure, I will be asking for contributions towards party healing items please, such as anti-toxins, healing potions etc. I hope that will be ok with you all?
Brett1815 |
FW - I've added my character as an alias and he's called Nombir Kadesh. Can you see the stats, or do I need to post as him? Being new to PBP I don't know.
He's taken the Earth and Travel Domains as discussed, with selective channelling and extra turning as feats.
He has a light crossbow for ranged stuff, a morning star and shield for combat when necessary and he has AC 19.
Any thoughts?
Zaid Al-Mahaudin |
Here is the start on Zaid. I will have his stats finished tonight and his backgound and gear done by tomorrow.
Rimrock, maybe your wayfinder could have a different but equally powerful spell, like detect magic?
Sounds good! I always wanted to be a Pathfinder.
therealthom |
FW rolled the extra best of 4. 13 sets my stats at
14, 8, 10, 15, 12, 13 dropping the 7.
cash (4d6=14) yields 140 gp. I'm rich!
I hope my next post is in character.

There you go, have a TreasureFinder instead with det magic.
French Wolf |
Got to figure his name. sketshy back story. got to add human ability bonus and work on equipment. You can probably see where I'm going with him though.
Looks good therealthom. like scranford let me know when you are done.
One thing to remember is that everyone gets a 6 hit point bonus.
Cheers
French Wolf |
I shall make a start on going over the characters tomorrow.
But just to help michael when he sorts his PC here is the current line-up.
scranford - human fighter of Gorum - Erizi the Landless
brett1815 - human cleric of Abadar - Nombir Kadesh
greyworker - dwarven rogue
therealthom - human cleric of Erastil - Shimei of Merraketh
Rimrock - human conjurer - Zaid al-Mahaudin
So 2 clerics, 1 fighter, 1 conjurer, and a rogue or 4 humans and a dwarf.
I am thinking about setting up the game thread sooner rather than later so that the introductions and general chit chat can begin. The adventure lends itself to that nicely. But the adventure will not start until Monday to give everyone time to post their PCs.
How does that sound, gentlemen?

Zaid/Nombir
Rimrock can you try to put two or three likely monsters on your alias (when you get a chance) so that I can refer to them in combat. Otherwise I may forget the Augment Summoning bonuses. It's not urgent but it will help us in the long run.

That's a good idea. I will take care of it tonight.

Erizi is on the money. I've checked his stats and the rest it all looks good.

Garavel bought your ticket in the name of his mistress, Almah. This was on a promise to your former master that if your behaviour is exemplary and the ruins of Kelmarane cleared so that it can be reclaimed then you will be rewarded with freedom.
So far the journey has taught you that Garavel seems honest and his duty to the Ruling Pactmasters of Katapesh overrides everything. However he is a decent swordsman, well-trained and quick, maybe a little flashy for a pit fighter.
Treatment has been good, food and other supplies plentiful on the way north. But one slave tried his hand at thievery, from the caravan. Garavel tossed him into the scrubland without food or water despite his begging and pleading.

Great. I had thought out most of the background, but hadn't figuted out how to get him involved with the Caravan. That works great.
French Wolf |
As if by magic..
Also I should mention the importance of luck, not dice rolling luck but real Luck. Katapesh with its genies and wishes is a place where Luck plays a part.
Sometimes it is also known as the evil eye. For not all Luck is good.
As and when Luck takes a hand you will know and you may come to hate it.
Cheers

FW,
OK to start play with a dog? Nothing special, just a dog via the summon animal domain trait. Says it stays around unti dismissed or it dies. Also just checking, plant domain says unarmed attacks don't provoke AoO. Damage stays subdual though, right? Otherwise it would be as good as improved unarmed attack.
