Is Paizo doing okay?
A while back I got an email from Paizo which had the feel of "hey remember us buy our stuff!". It had a tiny feel of deperation to it. While I've bought Pathfinder APs in the past I have no interest in the PFRPG. I know that Paizo has a pretty loyal fanbase so I just chalked it up to the email being worded wonky. Then I was talking to a 3PP that I know and heard that the PFRPG might not be doing so good (or that the support for it is not as hot as they would have liked... or something, as I know it's still in Beta). Granted this person heard it from someone who heard it from someone, so take that for what it's worth. Any meat to this rumour? While I'm not going to support the PFRPG I would still like them to do well, and to do well enough to start to support 4e (I would love 4e versions of their Pathfinder APs).
Opinions? I'm going to query some of my FLGSs to see how are the Paizo orders.

Rather than spread rumours and ask people who may not be completely informed for their opinions, why not just ask Paizo?
Yeah, I know, if they really were in financial straits they may not want to announce it to the world, but do you really think you’re going to get to the bottom of this by asking a few store owners and the posters here?

Opinions?
Sounds like someone trying to either stir up some trouble, or possible rumor this into existence.
I'm not a business whiz, but companies in financial trouble don't hire new people and expand their products. Call me when Paizo starts laying off or products start getting cut.
Color me "meh."

First of all, the e-mail he's talking about is probably the one in which we gave out the Pathfinder Companion: Legacy of Fire PDF, which many of you got. There was a version that we sent out specifically to people who let their Pathfinder AP subscriptions lapse, and it did have language aimed specifically at recapturing the attention of former subscribers. But I know if I get one of those from a magazine I used to subscribe to, I don't immediately jump to the conclusion that they're going out of business...
As for the Pathfinder RPG, nobody other than Paizo has any actual evidence of how it's doing, because there's nothing to sell since we sold out of the Beta print edition a few months ago. There's only a download, and hundreds of new people download it every week. We're just a little short of 45,000 unique downloaders at the moment, which we're very happy with. Nevertheless, there is good "buzz;" both of our main distributors have told us that the Pathfinder RPG is one the most anticipated products of the year.
They've also told us that our Pathfinder lines are among the few lines that are actually selling right now; they're happy with sales, and we're happy with sales.
That said, we're not completely immune to the poor economy; while we had hoped to have increased sales this year, we're mainly flat... but given that most companies sales are down—and even severely down—in this economy, it's pretty hard to complain about flat.
Anyway, no worries—we're here, we're staying here, and even if the economy doesn't rebound soon, we still anticipate that 4th quarter 2009 will probably be Paizo's best quarter ever.

In an age where (artificial) breast and buttock size seems the rage in the media, here's one of the instances where being flat is all that.
Thanks, Mr. Wertz!

I think it's ridiculous that the OP on the RPG.net forum assumes that a "buy our stuff" email is an indication that there are problems. It's just standard business practice. If you've got a list of email contacts, any company is going to work the heck out of that s#it. I never got the email in question because I keep buying stuff for the game I'm running. But I get solicitations from Amazon, Land's End, etc. All the companies that I've bought from in the past but don't buy from regularly.
Hey, is that over there on the ground...a piece of SKY? AAAAAAAAAAAGH!
Exactly.

As someone who works in the business world, let me say: "You'd be surprised." :-)
Nevertheless, it's hard to say how well a product will sell when it doesn't come out for another 5 months. So any rumours would just be idle speculation at this point, I think.

In related news, there are indications that President Obama is actually the least popular American President of all time and that Dungeon Siege: The Movie has generated more revenue than the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I was kinda wondering the same thing as the original poster since you see alot of "Cosmo, cancel my subscription please" in the customer service section...mine being one of them. But then again, I re upped mine as soon as I realized I was missing my favorite gaming items that I like to read every month. I have all 18 plus a score of modules and the other stuff and have yet to run a game or campaign (heck I just love to read the stuff) but I plan to change that soon. It's a quality product (and company) that I think will weather the economic storm we are all in atm.

Wait, he told you about it too? Just how many ways am I going to have to split this money...I mean when it finally shows up in my bank account. They tell me there's been some issues with switching out their old 80's-model keyboards that have a "Return" button with newer keyboards that have an "Enter" button and some glitch with that slowing things down, but they're getting them worked out and will send the money as soon as they do. (Walks away secretly laughing at all you poor losers not getting in on this jackpot, heh, heh.)

Too bad we don't get a Paizo-purchase incentive in Obama's stimulus package.
I remember hearing a few years ago that the Swedish goverment gave clubs of 5 or more people that met on a regular basis a stipend (small, but still) to buy equipment as a way to discourage living on video games. Gaming groups used it to buy gaming books. I'd love to see something like that in america.

If you work, starting in April, you're supposed to get $8-$12 per week additional in your paycheck. You could channel all of this money into Paizo and call it your own Obama Paizo Stimulus Package.
Right now I'm going through a career transition. I hope that I can answer in the affirmative come April. Then perhaps I can re-subscribe to the Pathfinder Modules. (Letting any one of my subscriptions go was HARD. Fortunately, for now, it's just been that one . . . and KQ . . . another subscription that was really hard to let go, too.)

Maybe we could get the Swedish bikini team to come game with us.

Doesn't everyone work in business? I mean, if you're getting a paycheck, there's a business involved in there somewhere.
Anyway, glad to hear Paizo's doing fine. I will call my broker back and tell him not to sell all my golem stock tomorrow at opening bell.

I have to admit that is a interesting way of getting people away from the television screen & off the couch! Did the Swedish goverment give the stipend to the group or did each person in the group get a portion of it? I don't think that would work to well here because someone or somebody would complain saying that role playing gamers were being singled out for special treatment.

Sending emails to lapsed subscribers is simple good business sense--especially since email doesn't cost anything. Probably the surest way for a magazine to go under is for them to not try to get old subscribers to resubscribe.
Of course I got the Pathfinder Companion: Legacy of Fire PDF due to having purchased some "Kill Doctor Lucky" items around Christmas. I haven't subscribed to any of the lines (temptation weighs versus budget and usefulness, since I prefer to write my own adventures) but I am planning to get the main Pathfinder book and Bestiary when they come out.

I don't know about this specifically, but having been involved in some non-profit hobby associations, I guess it probably worked more or less like this: a group writes an application requesting for funds, detailing what they are about, what they do, how often, what they are planning to do with the money and all that, send the application to the government or whoever is dealing with the funds, and they decide on the basis of the application if they wish to support it or not and with how much money, and give it to the group to be used.
Possibly a follow-up is requested, detailing what they did with the money...And I believe this didn't single out gamers: old ladies' knitting clubs could apply for it. Otherwise don't know how these would work in USA, but things like these work rather well in Nordic countries...

Is Paizo's climate doing okay?
A while back I got an email from Paizo which had the feel of "hey this next AP is going to be really hot!" It had a tiny feel of persperation to it. While I've bought Pathfinder APs in the past I have no interest in the desert. I know that Paizo has a pretty varied climate so I just chalked it up to the email being worded wonky. Then I was talking to this guy that knows a guy that I know and heard that the climate might not be doing so good. Granted this person heard it from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone, so take that for what it's worth, from me, who heard it from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone. Any meat to this rumour? While I'm not going to adventure in the desert I would still like them to do some colder climate APs, and to do well enough to start to support arctic adventures (I would love arctic versions of their Pathfinder APs).

Yea, I remember the guy saying that any club that met on a regular basis could ask for money. Sports groups asked for funs for sports equipment. etc. This would be a great way to stimulate non-housing sectors of the economy and make people feel good at the same time. Just a thought.
