Or are the crash bugs multiplying? I've crashed multiple times this morning, with one post being eaten twice. And each time I crash, it takes me to main page and please sign in again ... a might irksome, yes?

One of our database servers powered itself off over the weekend and is currently in pieces on a desk in my office, so the remaining servers are shouldering a heavier load than they're used to. And one of the side effects unfortunately is that instances of the website will shut themselves down automatically if they detect they're taking forever to respond to requests. That's why you've been getting kicked to the front page so often.

After carefully examining our application logs over the past couple days I've identified a handful of places where we were hitting the database more than we needed to, and a few hours ago rolled new code that seems to be working better.

One unfortunate side effect of my explorations is the discovery that Heathy's Saltmarsh PBP thread is a huge performance hit to the site. I don't know of many other internet forums that even allow active 8,000-post threads, but I'd like to figure out how to keep that one going instead of locking it and making the players use a new one. I think I know what to do to fix the problem, but I'll need to take the messageboards down for a few hours to make it happen. We'll give advance notice if it comes to this.

~gives a wicked grin~ Or you could just SUSPEND the Were-Mutt. With over 20k posts, isn't he a drain on the server resources all by himself? ~GRINS and runs~

j/k! j/k! I too would like to see that PBP thread preserved if at all possible.

Actually yes, until the changes I made today, I believe that looking at Heathy's recent post page was probably a huge resource drain.

I didn't actually discover that by seeing requests for his recent posts, it was another user whose name I can't recall. Might have been some sort of silvery dragony thing....

I know that the MTGSalvation forums have at least one active 13,000 post thread.

~laughter~ Well, I was just kidding, but I guess it makes sense in a strange sort of way! Keep up the good work, Gary!

And here I was tryign to catch up...sigh

I'll just start it over, It's no big deal. I'd consider it asinine to not do so if it causes a problem.

Heathy is a Chat God of sorts. A wierd, twisted, insane Chat God that needs to be put out of his (and our) misery, but a Chat God none the less. I think that he is almost to the 30k post mark at this point. ~wicked grin~

~laughter~ Start the whole PBP over? Or just refernece the old thread and continue where you left off at?

Heathy's post count as of this moment...

22,381 posts (30,068 including aliases). 8 reviews.

Yes, he is nuts!

Well it's a bummer that the game is having am impact on the performance of the site, there is something kind of awesome about that.

I'm sorry Heathy, but you are a drain on resources. GOODBYE!

No need, and actually if I'm right it won't help unless I make other changes anyway.

We have to beat that card-playing thread anyway, so here's to the next 5,000 posts!

(Umm. Unless of course I can't figure it out because I'm stupid or something and we end up having to lock the thread anyway. But I'm pretty sure I've got it figured out.)

PS: Unless of course I am stupid, in which case I would think I've figured it out when I really haven't, and of course, being stupid, I wouldn't know until I tried. Hmmm.

~laughter~ Poor Heathy!

Also, apparently I really, really like the word "anyway."

Gary, did you get my email about my crazy theory on there being a pattern to most recent post links not working?

I did, but I haven't had a chance to investigate it. I still think it's a CRAZY THEORY. Which doesn't mean that it's not right. :-)

~cries~ I know! But now that you have exposed my secret shame, you will suffer! 5 x the number of Orcs and slavers! The other players will blame you! Suffer, knave!

Hey, this stuff's important to me!

The Exchange

So Gary how many PBP's do you frequent? Do you play or Just observe?

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

Tell the truth, I've had the PBP forum collapsed for months. Today I uncollapsed it just so I could get a better grip on what's going on there. This stuff is important to me because I care about how y'all are using our website and I want it to be its best.

Thank you Gary. Now how do you take your bribes?

I was gonna say hookers and blow, but cash is always appreciated.

Yeah, it's like Scarface said. First, you get the cash.

If you ever get a chance for a little light reading, Heathy's game is a lot of fun.

How is 8,000+ posts anything close to "light" reading?

I dropped out of that game before it ever started because I knew I could never keep up. I still regret it, however.

That's deadpan Aussie humour there mate.

I'm looking for my Science magazine that had the carnivorous kangaroos from the pliocene or something.

We can ride in their pouches.

This is what you were thinking of heathy demon duck of doom

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, they had a big ass komodo dragon too.

And saber tooth drop bears.

Liberty's Edge

I tried to check the Creepiest Gamer thread at RPG.net to see how big that ever got to, but access to it seems to be denied now :(. It was the biggest thread I ever remember seeing.

Amazon's have made it over 20k before, but now they have it set to lock at 5k but it respawns with a new thread linking back to the now locked 5k thread. It doesn't totally kill the old one, but tries to keep it viable without crashing stuff.

Hey, Gary, one question--does the thread have to disappear entirely, or can it live in the archives? I want to know if I can consult back to it at a later date without crashing Paizo or whatnot.

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

It will stay in the archives, but it's best left alone as much as possible. Simply looking at it can cause the problem. (It doesn't always, but sometimes it does.)
