Male Human Fighter 5 (Great Weapon Fighter)

Bren dives for the millstone that he's quite sure will be there.

Spoiler:
Sorry about the slowdown this week -- I'm battling the flu, or near enough, and don't have much creativity in me. I'll post as I can.

Spoiler:
Thanks, Bren, but this is 4E, so it's a ritual with expensive components. Or health insurance.

Bren:

Spoiler:
There is, in fact, a millstone, and it's a minor to activate it. You do so?

Ellessandra, looking -- relieved? -- delicately steps past Eglantine, out of her way.

There is no motion, nor arrows, from the windows of the millhouse.

Eglantine breathes deeply and feels time slow down as she contemplates her next words. When she speaks it doesn't even sound like her own voice.

"I will meet you at the dam on foot my Lord, you as well as I. Poor mortal that I am, there can be no honour to you in this duel if you are riding and I am not.

We must abide by the laws of your realm and bargain, must we not? This much I learned from your brethren. By what terms shall we determine the winner?"

Bren, Elias:

Spoiler:
Elias, Bren appears near you. After a brief moment of dizziness, you are both at the bottom of a millpond, swimming up. Two DC10 Athletics checks to reach the surface/shore. You're effectively out of initiative now -- act at will.

Flax smiles down at Eglantine. "You have learned well. But as you made the challenge and chose the venue, I chooose the terms. The stakes have been declared. The duel is to the death." He rides the rest of the way across the dam and gracefully dismounts, drawing his greatsword. The ettercaps and black fey tighten their circle, one of the fey taking the reins of Flax's mount.

Bren's Athletics is +11, so he makes the DC.

Female human Rogue 5

Eglantine's smile matches Flax's as she salutes him.

"It is as you say my lord, we will fight to the death."

A fierce joy takes hold of her and her eyes brighten. She knows that this is the moment she was born for, wherever it leads her.

Can she take a second wind at this point?

F Half Elf Bard 4

Catriana dives back into the pond, but doesn't manage to reach the millstone again. Swimming back to the surface, she gasps for air.

Stepping lightly across the bridge, Eglantine's dagger flashes as it tumbles through the air, pushing Flax off balance and away from the river's edge.

"Back my Lord. Your destiny does not lie in Riverbend, any more than mine."

The dagger glints again as it returns to her hand.

Move to M17. Impact Shot. If it hits, pushing Flax to G17.

"That is for the victor to say, woman." He grunts as the dagger strikes home and starts to burn. "Ah, first blood to you -- more or less."

Flax approches carefully, almost cautiously, and then suddenly brings his greatsword around in a tremendous arc, making an eerie howling noise that reverberates in Eglantine's mind.

Yomi, could you possibly chuck a healing word her way?

Eglantine dances lightly past Flax, switching places with him and ending on the riverbank. Flax's blow makes her head spin, but she grabs every advantage that she can.

"My lord, your word is your bond. We agreed not to interfere should you win. We never agreed not to fight."

Yomi calls on the Raven Queen to even the odds, healing Eglantine's arroww wounds. Surge + 8 Flax glances Yomi's way, but then returns his attention to his opponent. "A strange definition of interfering you have, if battle is not. But you are bold -- I would know your name before I kill you."

"We are feeble mortals and must take what we can, as scraps from your table. Interference is many things, my lord. My name is Eglantine Prakseda. It means the lithe wild rose."

Eglantine's up

EDIT - D'oh. Eglantine already posted. Will resolve after class.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Flax almost manages to make the switch look intentional, but the blood Eglantine draws prevents the bluff. "Yes, and the stakes are no interference, and thus no battle. Save this one." He charges at the rogue with his greatsword, the grievous wound it leaves festering even as Eglantine feels the blow.

Yomi calls out another word of encouragement, and Eglantine's wounds begin to close, though the festering continues.

Recharge Howling Strike: 1d6 ⇒ 3 Nope.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

I meant to say that Eglantine should feel free to roll Bluff checks to try this line of argument.

Female human Rogue 5

Where is Flax? Did he use a ranged attack to get to her? Also, I miscalculated her hp and have now amended them. She's on 44 after taking the ongoing necrotic.

"Not so my lord. Surely you are not blind to the folly of mortals? When you win, my lord, and my body lies where it longs to be, at your feet, your stakes will turn to dust and ashes. Interference is a small thing. What can be greater than dying for love? Do you think I would challenge you for anything less? When you win, there will be no interference. There will be blood shed for love."

1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32 - Bluff

I'll roll the attack when I know where he is. Doing the saves now.

1d20 ⇒ 20 - save v daze
1d20 ⇒ 18 - save v ongoing necro

Male Human Wizard / 5

standing by, no action

Female human Rogue 5

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 161d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Eglantine feels her luck leaking away as she stabs uselessly at Flax as he looms over her.

"Enjoy your victory, my lord," and steps aside, ghostlike. She shakes her head slightly to rid herself of the festering wound and the glamour of Flax's personality.

Deft strike. Misses. Feat allows her to shift one as a free action after the attack. Shifting to G17. Both saves made in earlier post.

Spoiler:
She's trying to maneuver him into a position where she can get flanking from either Yomi or Cyrus. She's got very little time left if she can't get some sneak attack damage in.

Sovereign Court

Lord Flax grits his teeth and answers, "Very well. Then my fey will not be interfering with your companions after I kill you."

He moves in and cuts deeply into Eglantine's side. -17hp to Eglantine, -5 ongoing necrotic (se).

The black fey begin shifting around, one of them blocking Cyrus and Yomi from the fight, but none making any attacks.

Yomi stands by, scythe at the ready.

Insight + situational mod: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 11 + 2 = 31 -- so close!

Recharge Howling Strike: 1d6 ⇒ 4 -- no again.

Is she dazed again?

Cyrus old buddie, fancy providing a flank?

Flax wants to believe her, he really does.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Sorry, paste error. Not dazed.

Female human Rogue 5

Posting in advance for when her turn comes up. If Cyrus does flank, the initial attack has a +2.

As of start of this turn, she's on 22hp and bloodied. 2 surges left.

Spoiler:

Eglantine smiles exultantly.

"Truly so, my Lord. You are always honourable. Trust that there will be blood. And love."

Her eyes never leave Flax's face, but she nods at Cyrus and Yomi.

"Go friends. This is no longer your place. Tell them that the storm will surely come and that our defense will be honourable."

She leans in to Flax and kisses him, one hand in his hair, pulling him towards her.

"You are mine my Lord. I mark you."

Quicker than thought, the blade glints in her hand, sending blood coursing down Flax's face and into his eyes, blinding him. The dagger drops lower and plunges once more into his shoulder. Still smiling, she traces a finger over his lips and spins away, feeling the poison drain away from her wounds as she goes.

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 272d4 + 4 ⇒ (3, 3) + 4 = 10 - Blinding Barrage (AC) v Flax. Close blast 3. On hit, he is blinded to the end of her next turn.

1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 301d4 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 92d8 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11
AP to use Sly Flourish with CA (at last!)

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18 - Stealth to try and stay concealed from him as she shifts away. Shift to G16

1d20 ⇒ 20 - Save v necro

Ellessandra cries out in dismay as she sees the battle turning unexpectedly, but does not move.

One of the ettercaps loops around Cyrus, not attacking; the other shifts to maintain the tightening circle.

Flax roars in anger and blindly unleashes a veritable storm of swords with his great blade.

Close burst 3; fey are immune; +12 vs. Fortitude; 2d12+5 damage
and the target is dazed (save ends).

Vs. Eglantine: 1d20 + 12 - 5 ⇒ (3) + 12 - 5 = 10; vs. Cyrus: 1d20 + 12 - 5 ⇒ (18) + 12 - 5 = 25; vs. Yomi: 1d20 + 12 - 5 ⇒ (2) + 12 - 5 = 9; damage: 2d12 + 5 ⇒ (8, 5) + 5 = 18

Omitted flanking bonus vs. Cyrus, but didn't matter. -18hp to Cyrus and Cyrus dazed (se)

The black fey shift around, one moving to pen Cyrus, others to keep Eglantine in the circle and Yomi out of it.

Yomi, with an anguished expression, calls out, "Lady, greet her with honor," and steps into the pond, then begins to dive for the bottom.

Shift, then Athletics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

Ellessandra
Archers
Eglantine
Ettercaps
Flax (blind through Eglantine's turn)

Male Human Wizard / 5

Cyrus looks to Eglantine for guidance as to how to proceed.
Eglantine, Cyrus can attempt to cast Maze of Mirrors on Flax and a few of the black fey, this will Immobilize them but won't cause any damage to them. Cyrus will only cast this spell if you want. He doesn't want to break Eglantine and Flax's agreement or interfere with what you have in mind for your character's culmination.

Female human Rogue 5

Cyrus - EDITED

Spoiler:
I'm honestly not sure. As far as the agreement goes, that is fairly specific. Only those two, but an attack that does no damage ... interesting point.

Eglantine herself is somewhere on her own. As her player, I'm frankly astonished and terrified by her. I'm just rolling the dice and letting her write herself.

Instinct says cast and get out. Cyrus is dazed though, so unless he's got an AP up his sleeve, that's not really an option. Once he casts, he's a target, he needs to be able to go at once. Flax has set a precedent for collateral damage, but he included Eglantine in the attack. It may be within the spirit of the duel. Not helpful really. You have to do what Cyrus feels is best I think.

Everyone else

Spoiler:
How's it going with raising support? You've got incoming fey due any time now and they won't be happy :D

Male Human Wizard / 5

Eglantine:
That's what I'll do then, cast the spell, hopefully catching Flax, and then using an AP and Expeditious Retreat to get out of dodge. I'll wait until I can use IC for these rolls as they are fairly important to the storyline.

Female human Rogue 5

Cyrus

Spoiler:
Thought about it. Don't. Even with no damage, it's going to be hard to talk her way out of and the minions would feel that they could intervene at that point. She may have a chance if she rolls OK next turn. Go raise help.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Waiting a little longer on Cyrus. Every move counts right now.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

I can't see much that makes sense for Cyrus to do while surrounded and dazed, given Eglantine's preferences. So Cyrus, if you see this before Eglantine posts, go ahead and take over; else just make a save. Eglantine, post at will.

Female human Rogue 5

Eglantine steps quietly away from Flax and throws her dagger at him once more, her face unreadable. As calmly as if she were on a summer walk, she runs a pace along the bank and slides herself into the millpond, swimming towards the centre. She makes no attempt to dive.

1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 271d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 82d8 ⇒ (8, 2) = 10 Deft Strike, inc CA and SA damage v Flax. Moving to H14 as part of the power.

Millpond calm water, I hope and trust Mr DM sir. If so, she's running which should get her to L10.

Spoiler:

Deft strike lets you move two squares before the attack - which is what she did. Ghostwalker just lets you substitute a free shift after the attack if you don't move before. Have I got that wrong? If so, I'll need to do a rethink.

The sequence was move two as part of Deft Strike, then run into the water getting as far away as possible.

Eglantine:

Spoiler:
No, I misunderstood. Sorry.

Forgot to roll the recharge on howling strike last turn: 1d6 ⇒ 1 1d6 ⇒ 2. Still no -- gah.

Flax, now bloodied, wipes the blood from his eyes and whirls about, looking for Eglantine. Seeing her in the pond he howls in rage and advances in along the shore, then glides in after her. Again, he whirls his greatsword about, striking at Eglantine and, incidentally, Yomi.

I'm requiring a DC10 Athletics check to make an attack while treading water, and assessing a -2 penalty. Flax can't fail the Athletics, and Eglantine only can on a 1.

Storm of swords recharged on bloodied. Net even to attack Eglantine (she grants CA from running). vs. Fort 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21 -2 vs. Yomi 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 12 - 2 = 18 Damage 2d12 + 5 ⇒ (5, 4) + 5 = 14. Hit both for -14hp and dazed (se).

The black fey begin to converge on the end of the dam -- and Cyrus? -- but still do not attack.

Yomi attempts to dive for the pond bottom but finds himself still on the fey side. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
