"I live but to learn, my lord and your world is one of wonder to my eyes."
Eglantine's eyes are limpid with adoration and to her slight concern she realises that most of what she is saying is quite sincere. If Riverbend wasn't in the equation and a man's life wasn't at stake, she would find both Flax and the feywild exactly as entrancing as she's pretending.

I think the plan is to swim across the river then run for the millpond, jump in, touch the sunken millstone (assuming its there) and wait on the other side for the Fey to show up. Problem is, I don't know where the millpond is on the current map. And we'll probably end up in a fight before we even get to the millpond.

Thanks. You're standing next to the millpond, if that makes a difference.
Eglantine Prakseda |
This is probably a little crazy, but I think Eggers is quite likely to go down anyway and it's what she wants to do.
Eglantine's muscles move of their own accord. Years of training seem to have lead her only to this moment.
DM
OK. DC for a charge which ends in a jump onto the horse behind Flax. The attack will be her dagger to his throat, including SA damage if she makes it.
Eglantine Prakseda |
Charge, in SA damage and CA (1d20+10=29, 1d4+2=5, 2d8=7)
Impelled by something beyond her control, Eglantine leaps and strikes in one fluid movement, drawing her dagger gently across Flax's golden skin.
"Fight me, beloved."
Cyrus the Mentalist |
Unsure whether to flee or fight, Cyrus casts a bolt of Force at Flax.
Cast Magic Missile at Flax, I'm 19 squares away as far as I can tell.
1d20+7=18 vs Flax Reflex, 2d4+5=10 force damage
pat512 |
Even as most of the party dives into the pond to intercept the fey raiders, Bren and Cyrus stay to aid Eglantine, though Cyrus's magic bolt fails to hit the young lord.
At that moment, four arrows fly out from the windows of the two-story mill, three piercing Eglantine, and the fourth missing Bren. -15hp to Eglantine, slowed
The archers have superior cover. For those in the pond, Athletics DC20 or two DC15s (ignoring encumbrance penalties) to reach the sunken millstone/portal (you don't have to decide in advance.)

"Hold fire. I have challenged your lord. Don't smirch his honour."
Eglantine's voice is high and clear as she drives her dagger down into Flax's shoulderblade.
"Fight me beloved. Let me prove my worth to you." The attack is almost a caress.
Sly Flourish (AC) (1d20+10=23, 1d4+6=7, 2d8=6)
Can she reach around and grab the reins to try and take control of the horse? If she can do that, she'll try and steer it back over the bridge, ideally running the black fey down in the process. She's used her standard to attack him to get the SA damage, but she has a move and minor left and an AP at the ready.
Bren - she's got a cloak of the mountebank and can teleport clear as a last resort. Ideally she'll try and get control of the horse and use Flax to provide cover. She's not really on the right side of the bridge for anyone to help out, but she's working on that.
Eglantine Prakseda |
Bren and others
Depends how Flax himself reacts I think. Eglantine would rather not die, and she has no chance in a duel with him unless she has someone around to force him into flankable positions. If she can get him back over the bridge and he accepts the challenge, it would help hugely if someone else was there to keep moving around and provide that flanking.
If, as seems more likely, it all goes Pete Tong, focus on taking Flax down as a group and then head through the portal to deal with any incoming fey and warn the village.
Tactically, the ettercaps are our biggest problem. They've got all kinds of slowing an immobilisation powers. Eglantine won't know that however.
pat512 |
Flax, shocked as much by Eglantine's attitude as by her surprising attacks, swears colorfully as he slaps at her arm. "You're insane, woman! But I accept -- stand down!" he calls to his forces. "But by all the devils, get off my horse!"
This is a free action during Eglantine's turn, after her standard. She can use a minor to grab for the reins, and a Nature check to try to control the horse's move with her move action.

Couple of points. First, what sort of DC is she looking at and second, can Cat's offer of a skill bonus come into play here?
Half terrified and half exultant, Eglantine leans forward and kisses Flax's neck.
"I will be yours, in life or death. We fight on the ground, away from the millhouse, my Lord. I will meet you on level terms or none."
All free actions I hope. Waiting to hear on the DC and Cat help before she tries steering the beastie with her +1 nature skill...
pat512 |
DC12 -- I'd forgotten how easy unopposed checks had become. Will hold a while for Catriana.
Whoops, should have checked before holding things up. Inspire Competence is a minor action, has to be declared for the specific skill, and Cat hasn't had a turn since realizing Nature would be relevant. Sorry, Eglantine, you're on your own.
Eglantine Prakseda |
Nature check to steer horsie (1d20+1=11)
Grasping the reins and winding her arms around Flax to do so, Eglantine can't quite manage to steer the horse.
"Sweet killing Lord, you must guide me in this as everything else."
She lets the reins fall free and kicks hard.
pat512 |
The golden horse startles momentarily, but Flax quickly regains control of it. Nature = 30 "You fool!" he hisses to Eglantine.
Situation: Eglantine is astride the warhorse behind Flax, having stabbed Flax twice. She then challenged him to single combat. He has accepted and ordered his forces to stand down, as well as ordering Eglantine off his horse. It is difficult to tell whether the former will do any more good than the latter.
Most of the rest of you are at the edge of the pond, ready to dive down and look for the magical millstone or some other portal. Eglantine has also been used for archery practice.

I'm tempted to keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming... to quote Dory. Elias has made a habit of single-mindedness. Someone also needs to warn the town.
Is that an action, or are you waiting for feedback from others? Ok with me, either way.
EDIT: If it's an action, please roll Athletics

Elias and Scathach disappear into the pond.

The ettercaps slowly move around the remaining party members, but do not do anything obviously hostile.
Flax then brutally shoves Eglantine off the warhorse, where she lands at the feet of one of the black fey. "This is not how to fight a duel, you lunatic. Meet me across the dam."
Treated as a bull rush at a -2. Acrobatics DC10 to land on her feet. No damage in any case from such a short fall.
He then spurs his horse to the dam. Halfway across he stops and calls out, "The mortal woman has challenged me to single combat. All others will stand aside. Should she defeat me, Riverbend will not face my forces. Should I defeat her, you will not interfere with us."
The black fey (with the exception of the one by Eglantine) move on across. It is now clear they and the ettercaps are forming a ring.

Eglantine laughs as she lands lightly on her feet. If she doesn't laugh, she'll panic and now is not the time for that.
"Bren, this is for Riverbend and Froderick."
Bren is stone-faced when he nods. But his eyes communicate great admiration.
"You're a great warrior, Eglantine Pradeska. Greater than I shall ever be."
He salutes her and steps into the pool.
I think at this point we'd all better get to the other side and await Egger's triumphant return :)
Eglantine Prakseda |
Eglatine meets Bren's eyes and she smiles gently. It's a very private moment. Then she nods quickly and looks at Yomi and Cat.
"My Lord will surely grant you honourable passage if you stay as witness to my folly."
Catriana Windrunner |
He then spurs his horse to the dam. Halfway across he stops and calls out, "The mortal woman has challenged me to single combat. All others will stand aside. Should she defeat me, Riverbend will not face my forces. Should I defeat her, you will not interfere with us."
Practically staying means letting Flax do whatever he wants in Riverbend in case that he wins. Also, they fey wouldn't like any interfering with the duel, and if any of us would it would probably just cause the big fight we tried to prevent. Moving to the other side would give us at least the tactical advantage.

Yes. You get a little more time to prepare. Just depends how long Eglantine can hang in there. Maybe two/three rounds if she's lucky. Use it well :)
