Liberty's Edge

Awesome new cartoon series on CN! Just saw the first two episodes in HD--if you can get CN HD, definitely I recommend it! I really enjoyed these first two eps. Better than this summer's fairly disappointing film.

Dark Archive

All I can say is Yoda is the man.

The show has its moments, but on a whole it fails. You see I went to see the movie, and the big battle up the cliff is where I realized the show was going to be bad. It was a great battle and great sequence that I simply did not care about. During the battle of Hoth (and yes I was a kid then so differnt perspective all admit) there was a Ohh S*** moment when you understood that the rebels were about to get their butts totaly kicked by the bad guys. It had weight, you cared.

Clone Wars you seem to be on the side of the guys who will be the bad guys, lest some day. And even if you don't care about that who cares aobut the deaths of clones.

Even worse are the Seperatest. Robots that act like that have no weight at all.

On the other had I'll give Clone Wars a few nodds.

1. I do like that they do show clones getting killed, instead of pulling a G.I. Joe.

2. From the previews guess we can see Y-Wings see some action during the Clone Was. This was one of many issues I had with the prequels in general. Did technology take a collective step backwards? There was a lot of mythology that grew up around old concept dwarings of the X-Wing Fighters. The Z-95 Headhunter was used by the republic during the wars, over the years pilots converted invidual fighters with hyperdrives. Thats why bush pilots got so famous back in then. Now I didn't think we'd see the X-Wing in the prequels but really every fighter in the movies out-classed both X and Tie Fighters. So I lest some of that is addressed.

I think the biggest isssue coming out of Clone Wars will be the relationship between Anakin and his new Student Asuki (Spelling?). First off I really like Asuki, in many ways she's the reason to give the show a chance. That being said Clone wars comes at a cross roads for the SW verse. As I asked in the Book section, did Vader kill any Jedi other then Ben, the answer is yes a few, but the list is actually very short (compaired to the Mythology built up around Vader); but I asked that question in light of the Force Unleashed in which Vaders Student does a lot of the dirty work. I still think Lucas is behind all this, not making Vader as evil as he might be so we'll accept his redemption, a mistake IMO. However I did find out that in the Star Wars Live action T.V. Show coming out in 09 or 10, Asuki is going to be in it.

She survies order 66, and the intial purge. Fantastic this is great, but the pay off has to be Vader killing his old student, thus showing just how vile and evil he is. Childern and other fans of the cartoon should be made to cry and spit at the very face of Vader, though I wish he didn't have the mask on so they will know that it was the man Skywalker and not the mask that did it.

It'll never happen mind you, they'll say she went into hiding, or Vader have somebody else kill her, or whatever excuse they come up with.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah; Yoda's wuppin some arse.

I liked the 2nd one too, with the scow ship or whatever, searching through the refuse for survivors.

Liberty's Edge

I get the feeling that it's not as good as the movies or whatever, I'm just enjoying it because my son's finally old enough to watch Star Wars stuff with me.

This. It's a pretty cartoon, it should be really cool, but it has no emotional center. It's visually compelling enough to justify watching, but it's just not filling.

Liberty's Edge

I think the cartoon Anakin is less cardboardy though than the live action Anakin, though.

Interesting, just watched the first episode thought it was quite good but have yet to see the movie plan on buying it when its finally released.
Don't much care for how they're handling the droids but some of it was okay the destroyer droids look menacing enough, the super battle droids seem to have some of the personality flaws I've been hearing about whilst the battle droids have them in far too great a number but otherwise a fine episode!

The dialogue bugged me, especially the opening. Other than taht it was an alright show.

Dark Archive

I liked the idea of a giant spaceborn ion cannon that can take out an entire fleet. I have the characters in my current Star Wars campaign looking for an Imperial super weapon and I am seriously considering using that idea for it.

So wait...is it a movie or a TV series?

Callous Jack wrote:

Both there is a pilot movie out at the cinemas at the moment that acts an introduction whilst on cartoon network they've just started showing the tv series.

So far two episodes have been shown one entitled "The Ambush" the other "Rising Malevolence" which is where the huge ion cannon armed spaceship comes in.
Have fun watching it!

Scarab Sages

My twins boys (just 9 now) absolutely loved it. I enjoyed it, and my wife, who has never been a Star Wars fan, actually watched both episodes with us. The battle droids take the place of C3P0 and Jar Jar as the comic relief. They appear to have about 80 IQs in general...They say very very funny anbd stupid things.

If you're too serious about the show, you won't enjoy it.

They are giving the clones personalities, and though these are the first 2 episodes, I suspect their personallities will get more fleshed out and later we'll feel some sorrow when they get killed, or, you realize they will betray the Jedi unpon execution of Order 66.

The execution of Order 66 in Episode 3 was quite traumatic I remember...

Yes.

I just watched the first two episodes and all I can think is they melded Star Wars with Starship Troopers. All I need now is the voice going "Would you like to know more?" and Bugs. Lots of bugs.

But at least Mannequin Skywalker displays more emotions than a rock crossbred with a statue, although it could have been entirely about Yoda instead of Mannequin and his Perky Sidekick, and I'd have been a lot more impressed.

Dark Archive

I loved the episode tonight with the attack on the Malevalence. The diolauge was absolutely perfect Star Wars, mirroring that from the trench run in ANH. My only wish was that Plo Kloon had said "stay on target" rather than the line they gave him. It was great to see the Y-Wings in action as a state of the art fighter bomber, rather than the aging work horse it was in the original trilogy. The Kaminoan doctor was pretty cool too.

Sovereign Court

I watched both the movie and the first episode of the series last night, and to be honest, I was quite indifferent to both. Which is surprising. I mean, a Star Wars film should really leave me feeling either 12 or miserable. I did like Asoka though, and Ventress is always cool. I'd much rather watch the older animated series though, which I thought was brilliant. (Not just because I'm a huge Shaak Ti fanboy)

I can appreciate why Lucas is aiming the series at kids. I mean, its always been aimed at kids. But there are plenty of grown up Star Wars fans, and I do wonder what could be accomplished by making a Star Wars film with more adult themes. Games like Knights of the Old Republic (1+2) and some of the comics/novels have shown that the setting doesn't just have to be kiddie fare, but I'd love to see a film with serious money thrown at it.

Ah well, maybe the forthcoming TV series might have that? Till then, more KoTOR comics for me!

Unfortunate, I'm really enjoying this new series- well, at least it doesn't suck, right? You should really keep watching, I think they started to put a few up on demand if you have cartoon network on demand- it gets better later on, imo.

Also, are you reading Star Wars: Legacy? Because that's the best Star Wars comic I've EVER read.

Sovereign Court

I've been thinking about getting the Legacy comics too. Darth Talon is a huge draw in that one!

I do have the next three episodes, uh.. around, to watch, which are the big super weapon ones. I'll watch those for sure. Though, the fact there is a later episode dedicated to Jar Jar scares me a lot. Its not that the series is bad. Its just nothing special to me so far.

The JarJar episode is largely ignorable. I hate the guy with a passion(I made my little cousin cry once over it), and even I didn't find it to be TOO bad.

And yeah, Darth Talon is...yeah. I prefer Lady Maladi, however.

The Legacy and Knights of the Old Republic comics are very good

Now if they did an animation on the Legacy comics would they have to make it X rated?

hopeless wrote:

Truth be told, I'm not sure HOW they would be rated. The Legacy comics are rather violent for Star Wars- only select issues of The Old Republic have had more combat. I'm sure they would tone down certain aspects. Last week's episode of Clone Wars was also surprisingly violent, but it was handled almost poetically- Luminara's fighting made me miss sword class so very, very much. I can't wait to see next week's- I'm glad they're focusing on non-near-human jedi!

Dark Archive

I just read that the engine room in last weeks episode was actually a nod to Robotech. It was modeled after the gravity control room on the SDF-1.

Silver Crusade

Finally started watching this after having it recommended by some friends over GenCon. Was seriously iffy as far as constant comic relief, pacing, and story-telling issues bugged me.

But then I realized that Anakin was actually emoting. And then I heard Female Shepard from Mass Effect voicing Aayla Secura.

Sold.

(now if only the Battle Droids would shut up...ah, the joys of nitpicking about kids' shows)

Good GOD yes.

Even if everyone's reaction when I showed them the first trade paperback cover with Cade on it was "Wow that guy looks like a total douche." Which means the artist did his job, I suppose... ;)

I like the series a lot. My 7-year-old is a big fan as well, and it seems like a very popular new iteration of Star Wars as an IP with the elementary to middle school crowd, as well as being a pretty good show for older nerds. :)

The animation and writing for this series have continually improved and it looks great in HD and has great sound too. I think they've done quite a bit to flesh out the characters. I really like the approach they have taken where you start the episodes with news reels like you might have seen before movies back during WWII. Because, from the perspective of Luke Skywalker and the later generation the Clone Wars were the World (Galaxy) War that their parents and grandparents told them about.

As a side note: Amen that we see stars stretching into lines with a cockpit view of ships jumping into hyperspace. One thing I didn't like with the prequels is nowhere does this effect get shown from the pilot's perspective. Contrast this to the original trilogy where it appears in all three films.

+1 on the newsreels - it's a fun and genre-appropriate touch.

I also like how they have developed the characters to the point where they can now do arcs focusing on different characters. It's not just the Anakin and Obi-Wan show; there have been Asoka arcs and one-offs wherein the main characters play comparatively minor roles and we see other Jedi (or even bad guys) off doing stuff.

Holy Crap yes, especially...

Spoiler:
the story going on in the background about the clones from that one class that were considered rejects and how they made it through their final test and into service only to die one by one throughout the course of the last two(?) seasons. Right now I think only one of the original five are left...

It's great show that we (the spousal unit, the spawn and myself) watch every Friday. It looks great in HD but looks even better on BD shown in 1080p and in it's proper aspect ratio (which is the same as the feature films 2.35:1 I think...).

Silver Crusade

Yep, it's in the same ratio. I got to see the Savage Oppress trilogy in a theater for a special charity event. They spliced all three episodes together, and it was SO MUCH better than pilot movie that scared every fan away. The only way to get adult fans to see the series is word of mouth that it's far, far better now. I want to see more clone-centric stories. Those seem to be the strongest written.

Spoiler:
The Anakin-prophecy-planet trilogy was polarizing. That's a storyline that should of been in episode II or III. Instead, we get it on a TV series. It should of NEVER been mentioned in the films otherwise, as there was simply no time to spend on it.

I am not surprised that your taste in fiction is excellent. Star Wars: Legacy is simply the best Star Wars work in the last decade. Yes, even better than KOTOR.

It's so nice to see things from the EU like Nightsisters. And yes, it's nice to see the clones having lives and personalities. Though it does make their blind loyalty to Order 66 more and more annoying. I wish the Clone Wars could just ignore episode III.

Spoiler:
Yes, that dark side story actually made me feel sorry for Whiny-Kin. I still wonder what is going to happen to Ahsoka.

Silver Crusade

I highly suspect the series will end with Anakin thinking he killed her by accident, being another step in the road to the Dark Side. She'll actually be shown as taken away against her will by slavers or someone else in a weakened state. We will then not see her again until her adult form in The Dark Times TV series. It's there she'll be a character fleeing her former master with whatever Jedi remnant is around. Because of this, it is unlikely The Dark Times won't start up until after the final season (season five) of The Clone Wars is over.

Silver Crusade

Y'know....kind of got the vibe that Ahsoka had a bit of Dark Sideyness sneaking through herself...

Just finished the first season. Pleased that my favorite SW race got a whole trilogy about the liberation of their planet. Completely understand why Cad Bane is such a popular character now as well.

The bit on George Takei seeing his character for the first time in one of the mini-docs was great:

"Ah, I see I've once again been cast as fat. I must have a fat voice."[/sulu'sbigbonedvoice]

I think part of that comes from her Master's style after all :-)

Though that would be... interesting. Ahsoka falls to the dark side, Annie kills her, then tells himself "It's not my fault, I'd never fall..."

Shadow Lodge

Now that we're in the holiday lull, I thought I'd throw my two credits in.

After the AMAZING General Krell episodes, I suspect that word will spread throughout the Clone Army about exactly what happened. I hope we get to see a little more of their dissent before season 5 finishes.

In regards to Ahsoka, I see the possibility of her escaping into the Dark Times, but if I were to kill off any character in the series, it would be her. I wouldn't have Anakin do it, since he was (supposed to be) so distraught over what he did to Mace Windu. I'd put irl money on Darth Maul taking her out, but would be happy losing that bet to an extremely close call :)

Slipstream's Saga GM has spoken!

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32, 2010 Top 8

My only disappointment with the Krell episodes.

Spoiler:
That he was a turn coat. I'd have liked to have seen some of the Jedi take the 'not real people' attitude since they're quick grown from Jango. Of course again the Jedi miss the obvious...

I don't really care much for this series except for Ahsoka, since she is the only reason I have watch this series at all. Mostly because I can't stand the three movies this shows characters(mostly) are from and that Ahsoka will more then likely be dead by the time the third movie's timeline comes around also keeps me from getting too interested.

So they are doing a series that takes place after episode 3's timeline after all?

Total agreement here, buddy. It would have been a whooooole lot better if it went down that way.

Are you talking about after the third movie?

If so the timeline for the show I'd between the second and third.

If that's not what your talking about .... Never mind. ;-)

Yeah I know the show's timeline is between episode 2(5th movie) and episode 3(6th movie).

But it sounded like some people on the board are talking about them doing another series after clone wars that takes place between episode 3(6th movie) and episode 4(1st movie) or are they talking about something else?

I've heard rumors of a series set during the 'Dark times'. Not sure how that would run though. I can't picture a series which is Vader slaughtering 'Jedi of the week'.

Face it, it would have been cool to see Palpatine's clone wars/rise of empire gambit go completely south with the rise of an unprecidented third power. Though Mandalorans are now officially awesome.
