Anyone play Age of Conan?

Video Games

Just to make my social and financial system worse I've been looking for a new MMORPG and came across Age of Conan. Before I dive in head first I want to know if anyone here plays it or has played it and if so what their analysis of the game is.

The Exchange

Not played it but I've not heard anything good about it at all. Myself I'm currently knocking about in Vanguard since they've managed to pull it to a playable state.

I've played it - lvl 30 Tempest of Set. The game is fine so far as I've seen. The graphics are nice if you have a good graphics card. Most performance complaints seem to come from people who are congenitally incapable of playing any game below it's maximum settings.

The key problem for me is that no one else I know plays it. It is set up to be very "guild" oriented. I'm just burned out with online "friends" in MMOs. Getting together with real-world friends that have moved all over the country to play an MMO together would be awesome... Playing with random folks who view me as a collection of sprites just aint so much.

Simple question: Have you ever helped a D&D friend move furniture? How about an online guild-mate you never met in real life?
There is a difference.
I miss my D&D....But I'm burned out on MMOs.

Silver Crusade

I play CoA

I have a level 42 assassin (can't recall my server but it's a pve one).

I like the game. Thou I don't think the game uses the assassin class very well thou, I feel more like a front line fighter then a sneaky slashing class. I feel like everytime I try to use stealth the graphic should be a big birght red siren going off when I do, as I rarely catch people with a sneak attack. unless they are at least 10 levels lower then me.

The attacks are pretty cool, as it's a little bit more then push your attack & watch your character swing. There are combos & such, but kinda annoying when you miss a keystroke & your combo goes flat.

I think the thing that I hate the most is the aggro in the game is a bit much. It seems that if you set off 1 guy, 5 more come rushing out of nowhere to attack you. Very annoying.

Overall I'd say it's WoW with boobs (there is topless nudity in the game). Graphics look awesome as anther poster said.

Will it keep me occupied for a long period of time, that I'm not sure. I'm debating on canceling here in a couple days, but that is due to lack of funds more then anything right now. If I could afford it, I'd keep it...........for now.

I found that AoC was awesome, for the first 20 levels. After that, it felt a bit rushed. (It was majorly imcomplete when I was playing it, apparently, with only a single mid to high level 'dungeon', a non-itemized one, at that. Perhaps it's better now.)

The Tempest of Set (who could guess that would be my main?) was a freaking amazing class (even after they fixed some of the bugs that made it terribly overpowered...). I loved it. Got it up into mid 30s, maybe mid 40s?

I also enjoyed the Demonologist, Necromancer, Priest of Mitra, Ranger and Conqueror, all of whom I got into the low 20s. The combination weapon moves and 'fatalities' made for the best melee-class combat I'd seen since Dark Ages of Camelot first invented the concept of fighting classes that did more than hit the autoattack key and go make a sandwich. The magic-using classes were significantly less potent than I was used to from other fantasy MMOs, which was refreshing, since it fit the Conan genre, where the big lunk with the sword *does* have a chance against the dude in the dress.

The graphics for the characters are beautiful. Some of the best I've seen. They worked hard at making the toons sexy, unlike WoW toons, which are just that, cartoons.

Travel in the game is pretty darn slow, for someone used to having a flying mount or flying carpet or griffon posts everywhere or (oh, I am so spoiled) powers like Flight, Super-Speed, Super-Jumping or Teleportation in City of Heroes. Even the special 'mounts' you can get are tedious (although the war mammoth does look amazing). I'm still cranky that there wasn't a special mount for Set-worshippers. Some sort of big lizard or something. Mammoths? In Egypt? Ugh.

Some of the fancy stuff, like Spellweaving, wasn't in game when I was playing, so I have no idea what it does. Other stuff, like the boobies and blood-splashes, appeal to a certain crowd, I'm sure, but were underwhelming. (When you get a critical hit as you kill someone, you get a death-blow animation. The effects vary by class, and sometimes by damage type, with most classes having a couple of them. The Demonologists fire attacks set people on fire and they run around screaming and flailing about. The Tempest of Set's lightning blasts can cause someone to begin shooting sparks out and turn blue in color. The Priest of Mitra's Smite can cause someone to levitate in the air, suspended in a beam of light, and then the light goes out and they fall back dead, which is a totally cool visual. The various melee classes have all sorts, with the Ranger sometimes pulling out two arrows in his hands and stabbing the person repeatedly with them and the Conqueror often smashing someone in the gut, doubling them over, side-stepping and decapitating them. Pretty fancy stuff. Since I played mostly casters, and the Tempest of Set was bugged and didn't get 'fatalities' at launch, I never got to see them except on other people's computers, until I started with my others, and then I'd jump a little in my seat when blood would splash on the screen as my Conqueror decapitated someone!)

Like Dark Ages, it's divided into three different 'realms,' instead of the 'light vs dark' idea of Warcraft or Warhammer or EverQuest. Cimmerians tend to be fighters, rangers and bear shamen. Aquilonians look Roman and are mostly fighters, priests of mitra. Stygians have an Egyptian look and include all of the mage classes and tempest of set, but no fighter types. The Aquilonian city is freaking beautiful. The Stygian city is very thematic, but much grittier and poorer looking. I have no idea if the Cimmerians have anything bigger than villages.

Silver Crusade

I have to agree about the after the first area (the Barachian Isles starter area). That was allot of fun to play, where the other areas do seem to be a bit rushed.

The slo-mo crits are pretty cool as well. A couple that I have are, my assassin spins a opponent & then slashes across their throats. Anther one is she drives a dagger (only melee weapon, assassins can use btw) upward & into the skull of a opponent.

Overall I do like the game, just I think the classes aren't used right. If I wante to play a melee-based class I'd taken one of those (probably have a easier time vs elites as well). That & slealth is about worthless.

Also forgot to add the music in the game is some the best I've ever heard, game or otherwise. The music could be in a movie. Epically the Cimmeria areas (the woman that does the vocals---wow!!)

I haven't played a specific stealth class much (a Ranger to 21-ish is about it), but I do love the fact that my Tempest of Set was capable of rudimentary 'sneaking' to get into position and stuff. Having non-Rogue archetypes able to be 'kinda' sneaky was an awesome design choice, IMO.

Silver Crusade

I have a ton of points in my Stealth skill but I still get caught. About the only way I can sneak up on people my level or a tad lower is by going behind people. Thou I rarely surprise them & get the damage bonus. Of course that is the way sneak should work. Just trying to wander by a individual, then getting caught & then whole army comes down on you out of nowhere is very annoying, ha ha.

Now lower levels & can sneak up, strike, kill that person instantly & his buddy that is talking to him doesn't react. Now that is what I call a sneaky killer, ha ha.

I'm not asking for WoW rogue stealth as that was annoying (playing on a pvp server didn't help either). Normally I don't play stealth characters, mainly brusier that I can solo, as I do that more then group stuff.

Moot point, as I had to cancel my account today before I reupped, so oh well. I'll probably return after the holidays, hopefully as the game has potential.

Big update this week apparently. I log in and my character's feats have been reset because of how they've been redefined. I don't know if it's true for all casters but the Demonologist seems quite a bit sturdier now, making it a bit less of a glass cannon.

Still haven't seen the new neighborhood they just added to Tarantia...

Sovereign Court

Anybody still playing ?

I just joined, and I'd like general advice.

Everyone I knew that tried it out either went back to WoW or quit playing because they went to jail, so all my anecdotal evidence would suggest you have about a 16.7% chance of being arrested if you continue to play.

Sovereign Court

That's the problem with people taking their rogue's role a bit too far :)

Well anyways, I have 28 free days to go, so ...

I just fired it back up again after not playing it for 6 years.
I have to say, it's much better than I remember it being.
It has an old-school feel to it, and simple mechanics. The graphics for a 2008 game are still good.

I dunno, but maybe after playing all of these new MMOs that have come out in the last 3 years, this just seems to hit the spot.

I play on the PVE server atm. Anyone else still playing this?

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

They beefed up the Herald of Xotli. Holy crap!

I still do not as often as I would like but I still play. Are you looking for a battle buddy?

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

Just fired it up again...
HoX is now 38...fun times.
Dark Templar is 35...
ToS is 20, as is my Demonologist.

Having hella fun with the HoX though...who would have thought a cloth melee class would be fun?

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

Thinking of making HoX as a homebrew class for PF...

Liberty's Edge

My HoX was a lot of fun to level. Maybe I should jump back in for a bit. I am thinking about a new PoM to run around a bit with.

Can't wait to hit 40. Thing that's kind of annoying is how many spells you need to feat for to get. Been running with mostly the same spells and combos for 20 levels or so. Using an Avatar/Possesion mix build to level.

Boom! hit 40!
Is it a grind fest from here to 80? Is there a level 40 questing zone?

The two zones that are around 40 is the Noble district in Tarantia then the Fields of the dead in Cimmeria is 40ish as well. At 50, you get the next main destiny story quest.

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

Ok, cool. I have a quest to deliver something from Khitai to Cimmeria.

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

Ok...been playing in noble quarter of Tarantia...cool place...
I realized I didn't understand how the AAs work (have to be slotted) and spent a bunch of points on them assuming they were passive increases.
So, I've re-rolled my HoX. This time I'm going Stygian in stead of Khitai.

I enjoyed doing the various starting zones after Tortage quite a bit. The music in Age of Conan is really nice. I went through Stygia on my demonologist. I hope you have a good time this weekend.

Yeah, this game is really well done on a lot of fronts. Too bad it didn't catch on.

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

Re-rolled the HoX, back up to 45.
Fiancee just subbed, she's enjoying it as well. She rolled a HoX and fell in love with it as well. It's odd how the Herald can mitigate and dish out damage better than a Dark Templar, which i thought would be my go-to class (I tend to favor shadow knight-type classes). But, I'm enjoying the experience so far. Time to hit up the noble's district.

So, we're playing on Crom. I started a guild called "Lazy Casuals" :)

Age of Conan had an awkward birth. It was released before the developers had finished high-end content: had inadequate advertisement: and almost immediately had its original executive team swapped out, resulting in it being the unwanted stepchild of a company that focused its funds on other games - none of which, I fear to say, had AoC's potential. But I still encourage folks to download the massive free-to-play portion and try it out.

It's my only experience with MMOs, and I'm told it's tougher than most are to master. The melee classes use multiple-key combos to multiply their base damage, so it's not just a matter of smashing the X button faster; and most spellcasters have spells that debuff their enemies briefly, setting them up for a harder-hitting damage blast afterward.

The Hyborian Age was created with a great deal of attention to detail - drawing from Howard's stories first, but with plenty of nods to the movies and even a couple to the comics incarnations of Conan. It's set a few years into Conan's rule of Aquilonia, presenting wars fought both in his adopted kingdom of Aquilonia and his original homeland of Cimmeria... both instigated by the Stygian arch-wizard, Thoth-Amon. It really does capture the grandeur of some lost age of the Earth.

Once you've completed leveling up (at lv80) most of the end-game content is pay-to-play, but by then you'll have spent many hours entertaining yourself for free and can make an informed choice on whether to buy a subscription. I can recommend it.

I agree 100%! I love melee classes, and so the combo system adding a little bit of tactics to your attacks, depending on how the enemy is defending itself, is refreshing. The casters aren't exactly glass canons, either.
I also agree on the setting itself. This screams Conan.
