Greyhawking

The Exchange

Since I started playing as part of this community, this is the game that I've wanted to run.

The Splintered Isles seems to be going well, largely due to the quality of players I have. Now I’d like to start something in my favourite setting. This adventure will be set in Greyhawk. Where? I’m not entirely sure yet and I’ll probably want to know what my players prefer too. The most likely areas are;

1) In the Gnarley Forest near the Temple of Elemental Evil; partly because I am running a tabletop campaign of the original TOEE at the moment. This will use “From the Ashes” as a start point if you care about the when.
2) Geoff or Sterich just before the start of the Greyhawk Wars.
3) Ratik and the Frost Barbarians after the Greyhawk Wars – similar to the Silver Marches in the Forgotten Realms.
4) Something very medieval set around either Furyondy or Nyrond and centred about the war with Iuz the Evil, maybe in the Shield Lands.

Be aware that if you are a Greyhawk purist, then you may take issue with the detail of Greyhawk canon. I have 95% of the books and modules but I don’t let that sort of thing get in the way of the story.

My other pbp game involves lots of sailing, islands and has a Sinbad feel (or at least that is what I am shooting for). This one will not. The PCs will be in a medieval/fantasy region, probably not travel so far, will need to invest in their local area and defend it against the bad guys – although this may change. For instance, I love Ravenloft so maybe the Land of Mists will figure at some point in the future.

Rules
I will be sticking to 3.5 DnD because of the character generation method.

Adventures
These will be a mixture of old school modules, newer adventures (including Pathfinder) and my own stuff.

Character Generation
PC’s start at Zero level as “teenagers” and progress, trying to accrue enough abilities to become 1st level in the class they wanted. Stats start low and gradually improve with game time. I have run four successful campaigns using this method and so am convinced you will enjoy the ride.
Players can literally become anything but they do need to be flexible in case they do not succeed in getting the right mix, be flexible enough to take the dice rolls and roleplay in other directions, i.e. a PC wants to be a cleric but cannot learn to cast a divine first level spell, so he becomes a pious mage or a temple soldier instead.

As a standard, no psionics and no evil or chaotic neutral characters. Forget variant races, traits and flaws. Otherwise the www.d20srd.org document covers everything.

Players
I am looking for 4 to 8 players. Players who don’t have a fixed idea what they want to play. A general idea of race and some kind of concept is enough. Most important is that the players find reasons to work and adventure together.

Secondly players need to be regular posters. Daily posting is a must during the week; I am not so fussed about at the weekend. Or let us know if RL will intrude for a few days. If a player is missing for 24 hours when we need a post then I may NPC him to move the story along. Since I will put a good deal of effort into this, I feel justified in the players not going AWOL or repeatedly letting the side down. Enthusiastic players please.

Now
Although I am very keen to run this, it’s about you guys and whether anyone is interested. So until Wednesday evening US time all I am looking for is;

1) A concept of race and class or variant of a class. Humans dominate most of Greyhawk but you could all come from a dwarven mine or elven tree camp.
2) Some info on yourself as a player, especially your time zone. Experience is not vital; in fact this method of character generation particularly suits younger or more inexperienced players because they can get to grips with roleplaying character development.
3) Possibly a preference on the where in Greyhawk or the type of adventures you are looking for.

This is not first come, first served; I shall hopefully have enough interest to pick and choose the best players and concepts to make a great group together.

Mr. Wolf, you might want new players, but I would love to put in a request to play in this campaign. I haven't had a character traipse through Greyhawk since the early Eighties, and I love your DM style. If you get an overwhelming respone feel free to put on the alternate back burner, I don't want to be greedy. :)

The Exchange

Thank you Patrick. Do me a favour and answer the questions please. You are exactly the sort of player I'd like.

Just so you know, the posting monster that is Rev Rosey has also expressed an interest elsewhere.

Generally folks if you have any questions just ask away, although I don't want to go into too much detail about the character generation because it is hard to explain and easier to do.

Cheers

Thanks FW, I appreciate it. Here are the responses to your questions:

1) A concept of race and class or variant of a class. Humans dominate most of Greyhawk but you could all come from a dwarven mine or elven tree camp.

I had an idea for a human idealistic teenager, possibly the squire of a knight or paladin who is training him to be a warrior. I was thinking like a Percival-type, very LG and optomistic.

2) Some info on yourself as a player, especially your time zone. Experience is not vital; in fact this method of character generation particularly suits younger or more inexperienced players because they can get to grips with roleplaying character development.

My current time zone is Eastern US, which I believe is GMT -5. I usually post early in the morning or in the late afternoon. I am pretty constant poster. As a player, I have RPGing in one form or another since the late Seventies. A lot of my early gaming was done in Greyhawk, but it was more for a place to set the dungeon than a real cultural study. I am learning up on 3.5 play after being inactive for several years. A nice wolf took me into his game when I almost gave up hope of PbPing. :) Since then I have been runing two games and playing in five others on these boards.

3) Possibly a preference on the where in Greyhawk or the type of adventures you are looking for.

With the concept I just came up with with squire boy, I think a heavy-combat area, like at the start of any of Greyhawk's many wars would be fine. Never actually did the TOEE back in the day, so that has always been something I'd like to try.

Foul tempter! I, another posting monster, must throw my hat in the ring for this one (and I actually wear hats, so there!). It sounds right up my alley.

I see a male human, tall, gawky, somewhat clumsy, and impulsive as a teen, who might fill out his frame. Fourth child of a veteran-now-gentleman-farmer/rancher/something, he sees the military/militia/guard/mercenary life as his means to prestige and, dare he hope, wealth -- though he may well become disabused of this notion early on.

In other words, human fighter, but flexible.

39, been gaming for most of three decades, psychology perfesser. US Eastern (currently GMT-4). I post incessantly, except when in the middle of face-to-face games.

No real preference on location. I prefer games where the NPCs matter to the PCs, so we have a bond with those around us. Defending the local area against the bad guys fits right in. I enjoy the odd dungeon-crawl, and generally am not very good at political characters (which is not necessarily unfun).

Ahh, French Wolf. Let me second the foul tempter comment! I, too, find myself unable to let this one pass me by. (Maybe I just miss the Assault on Griffin Castle!)

Hmmm, how about a half-orc? Growing up and dealing with racism and prejudice (probably the product of an orc raid) forced her? to learn to defend herself early, so aiming for thug variant fighter at the start. But, she really wants to rise above that and hopes to be apprenticed to a wizard to develop her mind and intelligence (multi-class into wizard ASAP).

I'm 35, in the Czech Republic (GMT+1). I started gaming over 20 years ago with the Red Basic set, moved into AD&D at the tail end of 1e, just in time to get really into it when 2e came out. Mainly played in the Forgotten Realms, and never played in Greyhawk (what I know is basically from the modules), though I've always been curious.

I can usually post every day, but I am going on holiday for the first 3 weeks in August with no internet access (and possibly to GenCon UK at the end of the month), so I'll pretty much be AWOL the whole month if things are really getting started then. :(

French Wolf wrote:

My knowledge of Greyhawk is sadly lacking, but the Frost Barbarians sounds interesting. But anywhere is fine with me, I won't know the difference! I do especially like the idea of really getting involved in the local area and defending it. And I've never been through TOEE either, so I'd be up for that as well.

The Exchange

Just in case people I haven't gamed with get the wrong idea from this, you are every bit as welcome to post as Patrick, Pat and SargonX.

Experience is good, enthusiasm is everything.

I could run Temple Of Elemental Evil but I thought everyone had done it (or the computer game).

Cheers

FW,

Yes, very foul tempter. How Dare You! :)

I would also like to throw my name in the hat. If you get too much interest though, especially from new players that are not in any PbPs, please consider me for an alternates list.

1.) I am thinking Human Rogue.

Spoiler:
The only son of a soldier who was recently accused, possibly falsely, of deserting his post or treason. The soldier was jailed or executed or possibly AWOL. The young rogue, with an even younger sister to look after, since his mother died giving birth to her, needs to find a way to survive. His name now has a bad reputation no one will give him a job. He starts to steal food until he is almost caught. Now on the run, he has to leave his sister at an (orphanage, church, or monastery). He is now on the run from the law.

Changing his name, hiding his identity, and moving to a smaller town, he looks to make a fresh start. Always hating the military he bears ill-will to the government.

These are just some thoughts. Nothing truly concrete yet.

2.) I gather you know me well enough by now, but for those that do not, I’m in the US EST. I have been gaming for about 20 years. I am unfamiliar with Greyhawk, but I do own the Gazetteer, and I am a quick study.

3.) Upon a quick glance over of the Gazetteer, Furyondy fits my concept well. But really any place where there is a city surrounded by smaller cities/towns.

3) Possibly a preference on the where in Greyhawk or the type of adventures you are looking for.

1) I've always wanted to run a cleric of Wee Jas, male, thin, almost gaunt in fact, but strong, and missing one eye.

2) I've been gaming sense I was eight, that's about twenty three years (give or take), and I've always loved story and role-play over combat. I'm in the Atlantic zone (Nova Scotia) and posting once a day is no problem for me . . . but I don't like to post just for the sake of posting, if my character has nothing to say or do I'm not going to inject myself into a situation.

3) Anywhere in Greyhawk is fine. When we used to play Greyhawk we really didn't play too close attention to geography.

Also my character concept isn't set in stone, if you're looking for less humans I could make a halfling, half-orc, dwarf, or even a gnome. I don't like elves though, just a preference thing, but just about anything is good for me. Also bard/ druid /cleric have always been my top 3 choices for class, and in some groups that's a real plus.

The Exchange

At this rate I may not need to wait until Wednesday. This isn't what I expected when I got three or four at Christmas for the other game. And that was after several days of trying to gather a group.

OK - command decision I am off to bed, and will take three more players maximum. It is now first come - first served because you five (who probably need to seek medical attention for your mental state) would make a good group as is. I don't want to wake up and have the nasty task of turning people away.

Also I would be willing to consider a couple of alternates as well, although the five that have posted are solid citizens.

Cheers

P.S. That means you five reprobates are in!

The Exchange

Rev Rosey - if you see this, I am more than happy to include you but please post asap.

In the event of the game filling before you see this, I reckon your own stuff should keep you happy for the foreseeable.

Cheers

Eeesh. Just caught this in time by the looks of it. FW you posted just as we were running an actual face to face game. Yup, would love in if you'll still have me, but if there's others with prior claims, I'll go alternate with no problem at all.

1) A concept of race and class or variant of a class. Humans dominate most of Greyhawk but you could all come from a dwarven mine or elven tree camp.

Human with undeveloped arcane powers. Or rather the ability to make things happen with no real idea of how. My thought is that those powers are just terrifying to her. She doesn't actually know how she's setting things on fire (or whatever it is she does) and thinks of herself as a freak and dangerous, so she does as much as possible to hide the abilities. A person in strong denial who will need to come to terms with what she is.

2) Some info on yourself as a player, especially your time zone. Experience is not vital; in fact this method of character generation particularly suits younger or more inexperienced players because they can get to grips with roleplaying character development.

UK time zone. Recently restarted playing again after a gap of a lot of years. As FW has noted, a posting monster. I work mostly from home, which helps a lot.

3) Possibly a preference on the where in Greyhawk or the type of adventures you are looking for.

No clue guv, sorry. Greyhawk is a closed book to me - or rather a book I do not own, so it would all be as new to me as to any character played. This is common for me - I don't know any of the basic stuff, having just come back in and busily re-learning everything. For the pc outlines above, learning her powers are useful rather than things to fight against would be the first step.

Sovereign Court

so three warrior types
a rogue
a cleric
and an arcane type

not too shabby

I am interested as well
1) A concept of race and class or variant of a class. Humans dominate most of Greyhawk but you could all come from a dwarven mine or elven tree camp.

I would like to be an adolecent human male. A few years back his village got in the way of some scheming generals tactics, village was razed and a military/hextorite temple was quickly set up, adults were mostly sent away to the slave mines of the great kingdom. Due to a quick wit and a strong back as well as a knack for wining fights between the local boys, a cleric of Hextor decided to take the boy in as a servant/acylyte. May be lean towards a Cleric/Fighter or whatever.....

2) Some info on yourself as a player, especially your time zone. Experience is not vital; in fact this method of character generation particularly suits younger or more inexperienced players because they can get to grips with roleplaying character development.
I am in mountain time (Alberta Canada) I have played since the redbox and have a love for big old Tharizdun. I am playing in othe PbP on this board and am an active poster to them.

.

3) Possibly a preference on the where in Greyhawk or the type of adventures you are looking for.
Anywhere is fine, I love sterich and Saltmarsh (the old U series and GDQ were very fun in my teen years!) I am 34. hope to get in ;)!

Welcome aboard Lady and Gentleman.

It will take me a few days to sort out the next stage so bear with me.

So ... I just saw this. Still able to handle 8 French Wolf? I perfectly understand if not, but if you've got room for another, I'm interested.

If so...

Spoiler:

1) A concept of race and class or variant of a class.

I’m thinking a human (maybe a half breed like half elf or half orc, but probably human) from a fairly primitive or back-woods or isolated rural community. He/she would probably tend towards ranger or druid (or possibly scout or barbarian) as far as character class goes.

2) Some info on yourself as a player, especially your time zone. Experience is not vital; in fact this method of character generation particularly suits younger or more inexperienced players because they can get to grips with roleplaying character development.

I’ve been playing D&D for about 20 years, and have been the main DM for my group for around 18. Began D&D with second edition, although a few of the old hands that I used to game with had a lot of first edition material and we mixed and matched. Never played much Greyhawk (or knew an awful lot about the setting) until Paizo’s Dungeon mag tenure. Am currently playing in a number of pbp games, including two set in Greyhawk, and really enjoy the setting.

As a player (and a DM) I enjoy roleplaying based and investigative based games, with a healthy dose of combat!

I’m based in Sydney, Australia. I am generally able to post every day (often more than once a day) during the week. I usually am able to post during work hours (my time) and often in the evening. I am not online as much during the weekend, but most weekends I can post at least once or twice. I am usually able to give decent notice if it looks like I will be unable to post for more than 24-48 hours.

3) Possibly a preference on the where in Greyhawk or the type of adventures you are looking for.

No real preference for where in Greyhawk, although my current games are set in Saltmarsh and Sasserine (ok, quasi Greyhawk, but in this case off the coast of the Amedio), and I’m running a game set around Greyhawk City – so if I had a preference it would probably be to steer clear of those locations. For my character concept, a very urban or civilised setting (to start) would probably not work so well.

The Exchange

That is the Circle complete with the Rev, Larcifer and Mothman.

If anyone else is interested then they become alternates.

Thank you

I'll get on with choosing a region, area and setting to start the ball rolling.

Looking forward to gaming with everyone; either again or for the first time.

Cheers

I am starting a discussion thread for you guys. Its going to be called the Greyhawking Discussion Thread.

Well, I see I am too late to be made a main, but I would love to be considered for an alt position. I have little of the experience most people who signed up have, but I do have a willingness to have fun and I post a lot. Ha ha, those are my two main plusses.

1. Finwe Yrinsil is a young elf maiden who grew up alone, the hard way. Her parents or clan were destroyed and she was sent into the deep woods alone in hopes of surviving. Helped along the way by other Fey creatures as well as a druid enclave, she developed into a survivalist and an individualist. She relies on no one but herself to meet her needs and is often seen helping those in need wehn she can. She is neutral towards good/evil and law/chaos, but she sees the evil that has been done to her and her family as a tip of the scales that she can rectify by good acts. Destruction of evil humanoids (Orcs) are her way of maintaining the balance, but NEVER call it revenge, or she might find a little balance is needed elsewhere.

This is her first real coming out into the world, which she sees as entering onto a wider stage to set more wrongs to right. But things are in flux, she could turn to good, or chaos, depending on how events unfold, she is unmolded clay. She is a wood or wild elf from some large stretch of woods near wild lands. Her future will most likely lie in Druidism, perhaps a ranger, or even the remote possibility of becoming a barbarian (!).

2. Many years D&D experience, mostly as a DM, including running Temple down to the third level before an unfortunate party-wipe (Friends still bring that up to my chagrin) but as a player, I am playing in a campaign here on Paizo that just started (Necro) and am DMing a p-n-p game, all 3rd edition. I skipped out on 2nd edition totally, only coming back to the fold in 2000 when 3rd came out. I am easy and breezy and will post too much for my own good :)

3. I cant remember what the third question was.

Thanks Otto, you're our alternate.
