A few questions ...

Besides the PC's, who else is with us? Scouts?

We are headed to a ruined tower. Do we know where it is located? Why are we going there? Did we find this information out at the Starving Stirge?

Does Alajos detect any evil hearts within the company he keeps?

Thanks for any assistance.

Cheers.

Ok. No one else is with the pcs.

Alajos can find no evil within the party

A bit more background

Reme is a large port city on the eastern coast of an Inland Sea.
The tradeway—a merchant road—runs directly east
from Reme to the city of Bard’s Gate and on towards
the forest kingdoms of the east. North of the tradeway,
and running parallel to it, lie the Stoneheart Mountains.
South of the tradeway, and also parallel to it, is the
river Greywash. The vale between the river and the
mountains through which the tradeway runs is verdant
green and dotted with pine forests, though the forests
have mostly been cleared back from the road. Fairhill
lies just north of the tradeway about 8 days march from
Reme, approximately half way from Reme to Bard’s
Gate. Hawks and falcons are a common sight, as are
larger eagles. The vale is plentiful with game.

You are heading for Fairhill.

Reasons for traveling to Fairhill. Note this may contain spoilers as it's realy ony meant for Otto but I dont think it will effect things too much and it will help to set the scene a bit.

Spoiler:
During the final days under his uncle’s tutelage,
Otto and his master traveled to the library of Feriblan the Mad in the
city of Reme. Otto was not pleased to visit Feriblan, for while there he always forced him to have contact with Vortigern, Feriblan’s apprentice, and his loathsome raven familiar—Talon. Luckily for Otto, this particular visit he managed to avoid Vortigern. While perusing mundane documents in an outer sitting room as his uncle and Feriblan studied ancient scrolls, he nervously fiddled with a clasp on the back of a small reading stand.
To his surprise, a secret compartment opened which contained a small,
bound piece of parchment and an item wrapped in a silk cloth. Checking
to see that his actions were unobserved, Otto managed to slip the amulet and parchment into the folds of his robe. The parchment proved to be a letter from a person—apparently a wizard—named Eralion. It appeared that Eralion left this letter for Feriblan on his last visit to Reme before some “ritual” that he spoke of in the letter. The letter apparently also refers to the amulet he found with the letter. A copy of the letter from Eralion can be found at the end of this section.
Intrigued by the letter, Otto returned to visit Feriblan some months later, once he was freed from servitude to his uncle. Figuring the old mage was addle-brained he took the risk of asking him direct questions about Eralion. Otto learned that Eralion was nowhere near powerful enough to make the transition into a lich. “Eralion! A lich?!” the old wizard exclaimed.
“He was no apprentice, my son, but neither was he a mage with
the mastery of the eldritch powers necessary for such a dangerous undertaking!
If you have heard such rumors, boy, I shall put them to rest. The
magics required for such a transition were far beyond his grasp.” Once
on the topic of his old friend, Feriblan spoke at length—though in a disjointed fashion. He told Otto about Eralion’s keep, which was located to the east of Reme some six days travel, near the village of Fairhill. Feriblan made reference to a staff that Eralion possessed which apparently had magical powers. He also mentioned that Eralion had never returned several valuable magical tracts and spell books. Otto left the old wizard determined to find this tower and the items it contained—for if Eralion was not a lich, the items should be there for the taking!
Readying himself with the necessary equipment for travel to Fairhill,
he visited a local tavern—the Starving Stirge. There he posted a notice
seeking the aid of able-bodied adventurers willing to join with him
in seeking out a wizard’s tower. Promising an equal division of all gold recovered, he soon gathered a group of comrades-at-arms eager for
adventure and glory.

Eralion’s Letter
My Dear Feriblan—
I must confess to you—my closest friend—that I was not entirely truthful with you at our last meeting. I feel compelled now to tell you of it, as this may be the last time I write with mortal hands. Do you recall our discussion some months past regarding liches and how users of the arcane arts might achieve that particular state? I must admit to you that the topic for me was not entirely scholarly, as I led you to believe. And for that I am sorry.
I know that you, my friend, have gazed into darkness in the name of
knowledge. That is why I sought your learned counsel. For I too have
gazed into darkness. And like you, I found knowledge—knowledge beyond
imagining. From the demon-lord Orcus himself I have wrested the
secret to lichdom, and I plan to move beyond scholarly talk and bring
myself immortality. Imagine it, my friend! An eternity to study the arts, to master arcane power!
As I pen these words I have arrayed before me unguents and phials,
instruments and tomes, all necessary for my transformation, save only
one—an arcane phylactery of elaborate design. The ingredients for that
item will bring me once again to your city. By the time you read this
letter, I shall have retrieved the necessary items and shall be on my way back to my keep.
Yet, as I begin to prepare my mind for my wondrous fate, my thoughts
turn to you, my oldest friend. Accompanying this missive there is a small silk pouch. In that pouch is an amulet—an amulet I have created for you. I know of your thirst for knowledge. With this amulet, you will have access to my keep where I shall reside in immortality. If you wish to learn that which I have learned, you may visit me.
Long have others of our kind called you “mad.” Perhaps it is I whom
they will now call mad. But I do not care for their appellations. Let them say what they will. I have won something far greater than words—I have won immortality, and with it, power. I shall share that knowledge with you, my friend.
Visit me soon.
Gaze into the darkness again.
Eralion

Several things your characters will have picked up in their travels. These may be rumours, falsehoods or true tales. Make of them what you will...

North of the city of Bard’s Gate, in the hills
of the Stoneheart Mountains, lie the ruins
of twin shrines dedicated to Thyr and
Muir—the God of Justice and the Goddess
of Virtue and Paladinhood. Near the ruined
shrines lies a series of catacombs used as
burial halls for the followers of Thyr and
Muir. The complex has come to be known
as the Stoneheart Mountain Dungeon.

"Bah! I've been to those halls. Beset by foul skeletons we
were! They shrieked like the skeletons from the famed dungeon of Rappan Athuk. My priest couldnt defeat them. They ate our halfling.
I destroyed one but it took all my strength. I'm no novice boy.
Those creatures wer of an evil I never want to meet again. Mark my words! - Dugran Slatespine; lone survivor of the Band of the Shield.

It is said that the great paladin Bannor was overcome by a horde of enemies in Rappan Athuk. His mighty holy sword, Gurthdurial, is rumored to have been lost in the Hall of the Cyclops King.

A potent artifact called the Seal of Power was carried into Rappan Athuk long ago by the mage-priest Donov, who hoped to use it to seal away the evil, restless spirits of the dungeon. He never returned,
and no one has ever found the Seal.

A great red dragon has been seen flying about the region. It is said to lair somewhere to the south.

A group of adventurers calling themselves the Fire Hawks recently left on an expedition to Rappan Athuk from Reme, and have not returned. It is said their leader carried with him an artifact of great power.

One hot, sticky summer a score of years ago, a terrible beast came out of the wilderness and fell upon the surrounding lands, razing towns and ravaging farms. It killed many of the finest warriors, and baffled the most potent wizardries, before finally being slain by the adventurer Mailliw Catspar and his comrades.
Triumphant, these brave souls tracked it back to the Dungeon of Graves—and were never seen again.

Background on the city of Bards Gate

Bard’s Gate is an independent city, allied to the nearby Grand Duchy. Established many years ago as a bard’s outpost and a way station for travelers between the inner Forest Kingdoms and the port city of Reme, Bard’s Gate is located on the only bridgeable location on the Stoneheart River which can handle merchant traffic. It has voluntarily come under the banner of the Grand Duchy mostly to receive the continued support of troops due to increasing activity by orcs and evil creatures in the Stoneheart Mountains to the north. A liberal and tolerant city, Bard’s Gate welcomes all races.
Because of its location on a trade route, Bard’s Gate has a number of guilds to which merchants can ship raw materials and sell them so that they may be crafted into items before reaching Reme and the Inner Sea. The banner of Bard’s Gate is a silver lyre above a silver gatehouse on a green field. Estimated at 20,000 in winter, Bard’s Gate’s population may grow to 40,000 in the summer. It has an average population of 30,000. It is a transient town and at any time its ranks may be swelled by merchant trains, mercenary companies or adventurers. Possibly due to its focus on bards and arts and crafts, Bard’s Gate has a larger than usual population of half-elves. The city is run by the High Burgess (or Berger, if a male) of Bard’s Gate, the elected mayor of the town. She rules justly and with tolerance, but she deals harshly and aggressively with the evil creatures of the north. It is she who has ordered increased fortification and has requested an increased military commitment from the Grand Duke himself. The High Burgess was selected by the heads of the guilds in town, as are all the High Burgess. She is also heavily influenced by (and supported by) the Greycloaks—a secret organization.
The city has a general alignment of Chaotic Good, though it is to some extent undermined by its own liberality—the city is so tolerant that persons of all alignments flourish here. There is, however, no open worship of evil deities, though many cults thrive here. In all, over 200 different gods are worshiped here.
Though there is no longer a formal thieves’ guild, there is a network of smugglers and spies, as is the case in any city where a large amount of merchandise is stored or transported.

Bard’s Gate’s “Districts”
The city is divided into a number of districts. The city itself straddles the Stoneheart river. Both the western and eastern portions of the city each have rather large canals that serve as divisions between some of the districts. These canals are bridged by numerous bridges.

Market District: This district is one of the “adventurer’s districts.” It is right inside the west gate and has many taverns and inns as well as small shops. Most buildings are two story with shops on the first floor, except for larger inns or taverns.

Guild District: This district is the heart of the mercantile quarter of the western portion of the city. It is filled with larger guild houses and craftsmen. There are a number of larger stone buildings here. This quarter is also the home of the Wheelwright’s Guild—the most influential guild in the city.

Old Temple District: Named for its many now defunct large temples, this small district was once the hear of the city. But many of the older gods (such as Thyr and Muir) whose temples are here are now less worshiped, falling in favor to the more lenient gods of craft and song whose temples are elsewhere. There are many abandoned temples here and as a result new cults spring up here all the time.

Canal District: This district tucked between the south wall and the canal that divides it from the dock district. This district is rather run down and seedy. In fact, if the city were to have a true “thieves’ district” this would be it—moreso than the district that is named the thieves’ district. It is home to the beggars, low lifes and other riff raff. It does have a unique feature however: it is interspersed with numerous smaller canals and bridges, so despite its seedy character it has a romantic charm (beneath the dirt). It is the home to many writers and artists who—as artists are prone to do—seek out the more seedy side of town.

Dock District: This district is actually enclosed by its own wall. The district has its own patrol (hired by the larger merchants) and has many large warehouses. This section was the original docking area for ships since before the founding of the city. There is little here for the adventurer, unless they need to visit a warehouse or hire a large ship. This district is run entirely by shipping merchants who wish for more autonomy from the guilds and the general government of the city. There is some tension between Dock guards and the town guards.

“The Hill”: This is the rich district of the west side of the city. It includes several estates as well as some larger homes. There are few shops here, though there are several rather notable inns.

North Wall District: This long, large district is wedged between the interior canal that wraps around the Guild and Hill districts. It joins to the Market district. It is slightly seedier than the Market district and contains more residences then Market does. The buildings are slightly smaller and closer together. This is a good place for PCs or NPCs to purchase a residence.

Bridge District: This is the hear of Bard’s Gate. It encompasses both of the huge bridges that span the river to the central island as well as the central portion of the island itself. The bridges are so large that they are lined on either side with shops along their entire length. It is a great location to have a shop on either of the bridges. Several of the more current temples are found here as well. The central plaza on the island between the two bridges is where many festivals and bard competitions are held. The temple of Oghma, the god of song, is here. This district is home to the most skilled artisans and craftspersons.

Thieves’ Quarter: This district was once the home of the thieves’ guild. That guild has long since vanished (for reasons we won’t go into here). The residents have continued to call this the “thieves’ quarter” owing to their romantic nature. The quarter has kept its more seedy traits and is famous for its darker pursuits. Cramped shadowy bars and shops selling drugs, poisons and darker pleasures can be found here, though all are sold discreetly. A number of famous inns and bars can be found here. But if you want real seediness and crime, you need to go to the Canal district.

The Bard’s College: On a small island north of the main island are the buildings of the College of Bards as well as the home of several notable NPCs. There are few shops here other than instrument repair shops and a few playhouses.

The Keep: This southern section of the main island houses the governmental buildings—the keep, the brig, stockade and jail, the main guild hall where all the guild representatives gather, the Burgess’ hall where business of state is done, the halls of the solicitors, barracks for the town guard, a number of storehouses, etc. This section started as one of the first portions of the city—a keep to watch over the boat traffic up the river.

Turlin’s Well: This inner portion of the eastern section of the city is surrounded by a canal. This section grew up around a very large fresh water well (thus the name). This district is full of small shops and bars. It is a bit more cramped and a bit lower rent than the Market district. It is the “other” district that could be considered an “adventurer’s district” due to its proximity to the east gate and the large number of shops, inns and taverns.

East Docks: This dock district is newer than the original Dock district. It contains the city military’s docks. Unlike the Dock district which is more of a warehousing and bulk shipping section, this district contains a number of shops which sprang up to sell the items shipped here in addition to the warehouses. This is the place to find smaller fisherman or ships to rent.

Outer District: This district is east of Turlin’s well between the inner canal and the outer wall. It, too, is an “adventurer’s district” in that it contains many inns and taverns, though they cater mostly to housing merchants passing through the city. There are fewer shops here than in Market or in Turlin’s Well. There are many residences here as well as a number of unique locations.

Tent City: Fort Rendezvous—a large tent city—dominates the outside of the west gate along with a number of buildings such as inns and stables. This transient village was founded by the nearby people of the wilds who travel to Bard’s Gate to trade. It is a bit more lawless, as it is outside the wall of the city proper.

Stables Row: Known for its many stables to house the wagons and horses of merchants passing east to west—from the Forest Kingdoms to Reme—this area outside the east gate also has a number of inns and taverns as well as small farms. In addition, horse breeders can be found here as well as a horse and animal racing track and a small amphitheater.

Bacground history to Rappan Athuk

Many hundreds of years ago, the forces of good
allied to destroy the main Temple of Orcus in the
ancient city of Tsar. With their temple in ruins, the
surviving high priests of this accursed demon-god
fled the city with an army of enemies on their trail
- an army of heroic fighters, clerics and paladins - led
by Zelkor, a powerful wizard. The exact fate of these
evil priests was then unknown, for not only did the
remnants of the followers of Orcus disappear from
all human reckoning, but so did the army of light
that followed after them disappear as well. Some
said that in the eternal scales the loss of so many
good men was a fair price to pay to rid the world of
so much evil.
The evil cult, however, had not been destroyed. The
surviving priests and their followers instead settled
on a hill near the Forest of Hope, a sylvan woodland
near the Coast Road many milesto the East of Bards Gate.
There they found a vast underground complex of caverns and mazes, carving out a volcanic intrusion beneath the hill.
There, the priests of Orcus found the perfect lair
to continue their vile rituals.
For many years, they carried on in secret, hidden
from the light and from the knowledge of men.
Many years later, their underground delving completed,
the evil priests erected a hideous mausoleum
and a sunken graveyard atop the hill. It is believed
that these graves are in fact the final resting place of
the pursuing army of heroes that had been destroyed
to a man. Soon after the mausoleum was erected the
peaceful creatures of the wood began to disappear.
Though many rangers and druids investigated these
happenings, the cause of the creatures’ disappearance
was not immediately determined. Some years later, a
powerful group of adventurers, led by Bofred, a high
priest of Cuthbert, investigated the evil happenings
and found the sunken graveyard leading to a labyrinthine
complex. Bofred and his companions found
great hordes of evil creatures in the complex. Though
some of his companions returned from their expedition,
telling tales of fantastic treasure and ferocious
monsters, Bofred was never seen again—lost in the
catacombs beneath the cursed mausoleum.
For the last one hundred years, ranks of adventurers
swarmed to the newfound dungeon. Many fell prey to
bandits and monsters in the surrounding wilderness.
Of those who survived to reach the mausoleum and
the sunken graveyard, rumors suggest that most were
slain by guardians of green stone before they even
entered the dungeon or perished on the very first
level. Those rare few who return from deeper treks
speak of horrible undead and creatures that cannot
be slain. All who have explored Rappan Athuk
offer this one universal piece of advice: “Don’t go
down the Well.”

DM, is War with us to be NPC'd?

Have we heard from our other players?

Nice start to the game, by the way. Very nice descriptions. Gritty and dark. I like it!

Cheers

Say, Osric.

I think "refocus" was a 3.0 thing. There's really no advantage to it with cyclical initiatives. Whether you're going at 3 starting in round 1, or going at 21 starting in round 2, you're still going between Lyssa and Alajos!

A few nuggets on the city of Reme from whence the characters set off from. This is quite vague but gives you an idea of what its like.

Reme is a costal city and is the largest of several small city states which look to one another for support as they constitantly attempt to backstab one another and take control of trade, shipping and the like. Reme currently rules because it is the largest and because its navy is very strong.

Reme has several organized crime syndicates indluding a headquarters of the Wali-Hecate and the Middlemen. Due to trade and proximity to shipping lanes the different syndicates have plenty to pick from.

Reme is near the subteranean Hobgoblin fortress of Kakobovia, named for the deposed Hobgoblin deity.

Reme's armed forces is almost completely comprised of highly organized mercenaries with their own agenda who basically extort money from the nobility in exchange for protection.

The nobles in Reme largely dispise one another but are ruled by an elected noble who holds the title "Prince of Reme".

Brin Zwiesher ale is brewed in Bards Gate in a brewery run by a man of the same name. He is in direct competiton with the dwarfs of the Stoneheart Distillery. The ale itself is potent but pretty tasteless. It is cheaper than most of its competitors and popular with customers who are not to particular about what they drink.

I thought it was still in 3.5 but it doesnt matter, it was a roleplaying thing anyway, I figure I got up groggy so I need to take a moment to clear my head and see whats up anyway, which is why my second action was to go help the fighter.

Now that we are on our way, I just want to say greetings to everybody. I look forward to gaming with you all and making this a great, long-lasting PbP. Although we are not across the table from each other, I still enjoy a bit of table chat.

A little about myself. My real name is Jerry and I am 32 (almost 33). I reside in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania located in a little place we like to call the Lehigh Valley. I am married to a wonderful woman named Amy for almost 6 years (we have been together for almost 12). I work in the drug addiction field although my degree is in accounting. I have been gaming since I was 12 or 13. Other than gaming, I enjoy hiking, biking, and animal watching.

That's pretty much it. A simple life is what I crave. If you would need to contact me for any reason, my email address is gmistal@verizon.net.

It is nice to meet you all. Feel free to share or just say hello.

Male Human (well i was this morning) Technical Sales Facilitator

Hi all. Well, i'll be your DM for this (hopefully) long running campaign. A bit about me... My name is Neil, i'm 40 and have been playing since 1987. I prefer to DM rather than play but still sometimes enjoy the odd dabble. I've played many things, Warhammer RPG, Mage, Star Wars, Cthulhu, Cyberpunk, Palladium amd many others but I will always come back to D&D.
I live in the town of Blackpool in the county of Lancashire, England. It's on the Fylde coast and about 40-50 miles from Manchester and Liverpool. I'm married to Sandra and we have a son, Adam who is 10. I work in the Modular building construction industry as a technical sales consultant. At the moment i dont seem to have much free time to play at a table so this is an ideal solution. Hopefully I'll be back plying in the real world soon.
We try and get to the States on a regular basis as both myself and Sandra have fallen in love with Florida. I am incredibly greatful to Paizo for what they have achieved in such a small time and i'm looking forward to Pathfinder rpg.
As for the campaign, well i have always had a soft spot for these Necromancer adventures, and just love the 1st ed feel of them. Hope you all enoy the ride and feel free to e-mail me at neil@neil899.oranghome.co.uk.
(By the way, Saa is also a fellow gamer from my 'real world' group so its good to have him along.)

Before I forget, I'll also be running an NPC for a while, Belflin if thats ok with everyone. It's just a way I can add bits of info and 'seeds' into the campaign.

Hi I'm Jason 36, out of Kansas City Missouri, USA. I am normally a DM from the old days, totally skipped 2nd edition (was marrying, having kids etc at the time) but came back recently with 3rd edition. We have a Friday nite p-n-p game that I DM, just started, and I saw this and share Ironhard's love of Necromancer so that I just HAD to play! The game is off to a rollicking start and I am looking forward to it.

I am also hoping to find a 4ed p-b-p to try out so I can get some hands-on with the new flag-ship.

Orthodox Carnivore.... Have yet to hear of that one, is that a branch of the Church of England?
English and Tatoinne...very homey sounding.

Limey = Englishman. Supposedly from British seamen taking stocks of limes with them to fend off scurvy.

Osric:

Ya some in-laws live in those parts, I know all about it. Do you have a tabletop group?

Utak:

Hey Utak if you decide you want to add another game to your list, I just had to bow out of one, another Necromancer round, Barakus. He is using Pathfinder rules and I dont feel up to it. Would love to have a replacement, lol! (It sounds like it will be a fun game.)

On topic:
I am having a lot of fun so far. I am trying to play Otto as not too brite, but good intentioned, and lucky. Everyone else seems to have really great characters as well, I think it is a great group.

I read this scenario years ago and have a pretty good idea of what's to come, but I'm trying not to meta-game and just roll with it. I dm tabletop, and it is nice to leave all the bookwork behind and just play, you know?

Oh, and Kudos to DM great job so far! I like how you keep things moving. Lets to battle! I have some spears and magic missiles to cast.

hi? anyone need a bard for your travels...
lyssa female human bard, strawberry blonde 20s 5'8" scar under right eye partially concealed by hair. tatto of snake starting at base of left wrist concealed by rust-red leather/chain armor.

uses longsword and shield. was away at academy when the great beast escaped and lesser nobility"merchant class" parents were killed defending thier home. has brother still serving in military and a uncle who lives far away thats a kings chancelor.

anyways thought id throw in a character if your losing someone. if anyone responds ill continue otherwise have fun.

IRONHARD, I'd like to state a preference / make a request.

DMPC's, like Belflyn, are tricky things. I'd really rather he be the last to speak or act, not the first -- if he takes any kind of leadership, it begins to feel, IMHO, like we're just audience.

Thanks.

Thanks for thinking of me. I'm good though. I'm currently in five, and with my schedule, it is hard to juggle these at times. Plus, the wife would kill me if I joined another game. :)

Cheers
