So anyway here are the stats for the creature you just fought
Ordo, Minor Embodiment of Law: Unique Automaton; CR 8;
Medium construct (lawful);
HD12d10+20; hp 98; Init +1; Spd 30 ft.; AC 21, touch
11, flat-footed 20; Base Atk +9; Grp +15; Atk slam
+15 melee (1d8+6 [10]); Full Atk 2 slams +15 melee
(1d8+6 [10]); SA –; SQ Construct traits, damage
reduction 5/variety, darkvision 60 ft., fast healing
20, low-light vision, protection from chaos, reconfigure,
resist energy 5/variety, stability; AL LN; SV Fort
+4, Ref +5, Will +6; Str 22, Dex 12, Con –, Int –, Wis
14, Cha 10.
Skills and Feats: Climb +14, Listen +8, Spot
+10; Improved Trip.
SQ – Damage Reduction 5/Variety (Ex): Ordo
adapts to being attacked. After a weapon has struck
him, subsequent attacks with the same weapon and
others like it are subject to damage reduction 5/-.
Even though two different players may have
mundane longswords (which are different physically)
only the first strike from any mundane longsword
would inflict full damage. However, a masterwork
longsword is different from a mundane longsword,
as is a +1 flaming longsword or a cold iron
longsword.
Ordo’s damage reduction “resets” when he
enters cube form.
Energy Resistance 5/Variety (Ex): Ordo adapts
to being hit by energy attacks, such as from a spell
or mundane sources. After he takes energy damage
from any source, he gains energy resistance 5
to all subsequent attacks with that energy.
Fire, for example, will only fully damage Ordo
once before his energy resistance kicks in, no matter
if it came from a torch, fireball or burning flask of
oil.
Ordo’s energy resistance “re-sets” when he
enters cube form. Note that force is not an energy
type.
Fast Healing 20 (Ex): This only functions when
Ordo is in cube form.
Protection from Chaos (Sp): Ordo was constructed
with a constant protection from chaos
effect in place around him.
Reconfigure (Ex): Ordo’s makers, the tortoiselike
falsoom, built him to be able to retract into his
basic cube form to realign his body’s position. Ordo
will always maintain a humanoid body configuration:
legs on bottom, arms to sides, head on top.
This means that Ordo can rise from prone without
provoking an attack of opportunity simply by
retracting into his cube and having his legs reemerge
beneath him. This ability also grants him a
+4 bonus to grapple checks when attempting to
escape a grapple. Reconfiguring his position is a
free action, but Ordo still has to take an action of the
appropriate type to take advantage of it (a move
action to stand up from prone or an attack action to
escape a grapple). Using this ability does not count
as assuming cube form for purposes of Ordo’s fast
healing or resetting his damage reduction.
Stability: Ordo gains a +4 bonus on ability
checks made to resist being bull rushed or tripped
when standing on the ground (but not when climbing,
flying, riding, or otherwise not standing firmly on
the ground).
Ordo is a thinking construct and will make use of
the advantages of higher ground whenever he can.
If the Ring is stolen, Ordo relentlessly pursues
the character holding it. If the party has captured
the item and is attempting to open the door,
Ordo shifts focus to the characters attempting to
open the door. His primary goal is to prevent the
Ring from leaving the room.

Tough customer! Laurels go to Halgur for this one I think ...
Holgur squeels like a girl and rushes to the podium.
"I want to thank all the wonderful people who made this all possible...."Khaladon |
Yes strange indeed, it's almost as if I read the bizzaro version of this module so I now know the exact wrong thing to do in any given situation ;-)
Including having Layjiani put on a ring she can't take off (yet) which is not of too much use to her but would have been perfect for Eltariel. Although, to be fair to myself, Layjiani did suggest someone else go for the ring first. : P

Thanks, Wellard! It's all a little surreal. Let's see how well I can stat up a critter. (Although I have a twinge of disappointment: I am very happy with the stat block I dre up for the Lantern Thrall, and I'd wager that not too many other contestants are going to want to try interpreting it as a Pathfinder stat block.)
Khaladon |
I thought I changed it ages ago, but I guess I had just changed it on my paper sheet. Anyway, finally made the change on here of that Feat you allowed me to change way back Wellard. Swapped Agile Maneuvers for Rapid Shot. As neither have been used since then, I'm assuming it still all good?

So, it's time for Gashelle to take her 6th level, and I'm looking at the Duskblade for the next six levels or so, ... pheh.
At 6th Level, a Duskblade gets something like spell penetration, under specific circumstances. All right. At 7th Level, Gashelle could use a heavy shield, should she grow a third arm. She learns an extra spell per level, but won't see 3rd-level spells till 9th Level.
So, it wouldn't take much to convince her to switch to a new class.
But Gashelle is about balance between equals. Between Athena and Lakshmi, law and chaos, between elf and human, between magic and steel. And I'd like to keep it that way.
Your thoughts or suggestions?
Dabbler |
Hmmm. Problem is multi-classing can cripple casting, unless you are specific about what you take. My suggestion would be to expand her spell ability by going Wizard (Transmuter) to get hold of some other spells that would enhance her combat ability (using ones from the SC largely), and alternate with fighter or one of the other combat classes.
Thing is, Duskblade is the only 'gish' build that I can think of, unless you want to use one I scribbled up that's an arcane equivalent of a psychic warrior ....

Well, any base class with its own spell list would, yes, be five levels behind.
So, looking at the Pathfinder prestige classes:
Arcane Archer - ignores the glaive, and requires three feats she doesn't currently have. She could pick it up after dipping two levels of Fighter.
Arcane Trickster - good match thematically, but requires her to pick up three levels of Rogue.
Assassin -
Dragon Disciple - she meets all the prerequisites, but the flavor would be very odd for her.
Duelist - reasonable match in terms of flavor, but, again, requires three feats she doesn't have.
Eldritch Knight - This would be an excellent fit, except that she won't qualify for the class until after 9th Level.
Loremaster - Again, she'd need to be 9th Level, and Duskblades don't get all that many Divination =-school spells.
Mystic Theurge -
Pathfinder Chronicler -
Shadowdancer - She has none of the prerequisite skills.
Let me look more carefully at the APG classes.
(Darn it; why doesn't Shelyn have a prestige class? It would probably fit like a glove!)
DM Wellard |
As chris says Arcane archer needs Gashelle to shift her entire focus away from the glaive(though it would work for Layjiani..the racial requirement was a misprint holdover from 3.5)
I still think oracle is usable..they serve a mixtur of gods..have mystical abilities..that can be a great help in many situations.
Oracle with battle Mystery would fit best I think
Chris Mortika RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16 |
Bladesinger would require Gashelle to give up the glaive, since its advantages only apply if she's wielding a rapier one-handed.
Spellsword is a possibility. I'd need to buy up Gashelle's ranks in knowledge (arcana), but that's the only prerequisite she's lacking. Essentially, I'd be trading half of the Duskblade's spell advancement and some abilities that she'd receive at high level, in exchange for the opportunity to wear heavy armor and still cast spells, and channel more magic through a melee weapon.
Spellsword is commonly perceived as a pretty weak prestige class, but it looks like a good pick for Gashelle.
I'll still look through the APG classes, but Spellsword is certainly a viable route for her.
EDIT: I looked over the Advanced Players Guide classes. None of them work terribly well, and particularly not the Oracle. (While it might be funny to have Gashelle unable to see past 30 feet or speak only Celestial while in battle, from now until she reaches 10th Level, I imagine it would get old after a few encounters. Also, Gashelle's Charisma isn't high enough to allow her to cast any Oracle spells.)
Dabbler |
Yes it's not bad - looks like all we need to do is adjust the hit dice to d10 and amend the saves to make it fit pathfinder too, no fancy abilities to translate over or anything. Remember to knock 3 ranks of the demanded skill too, you should only need Knowledge (arcana) 3 ranks.

Hey, I just realized that I think I've been forgetting to add Layjiani's Con bonus when she levels...willl check now and correct if necessary.
Also, do you guys think switching to Shadow Dancer or Arcane Archer is worth it over more levels of Rogue or Ranger?
(Also, read that line in Shadow Dancer that if your Shadow dies and you fail a Fort save you Permanently lose a level?? Seems pretty harsh for no matter how high your mod, anyone can roll a 1...: O)
Chris Mortika RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16 |
Well you gain one permanent negative level, which is different; it can be removed by restoration, for example.
Shadowdancer strikes me as being off-sides from Layjiani's schticks, though. It provides a lot of movement options, and eventually a shadow "pet". But Layjiani is an archer, with little need for movement, and she doesn't strike me as the pet kind of person. (Although, when she reaches Ranger Level 4, I guess we'll see.)
Arcane Archer requires her to already have some arcane spells. Is that a direction you want her to go?
Khaladon |
Well I had though some about giving her even a little arcane skill, seeing as we only have 2 partial arcane casters in the group. (A couple extra fireballs never hurt anyone ; ) But, while steering towards the arcane would aid her secondary purpose as ranged martial support, it would take away from her main purpose as party scout/trap finder.
Shadow Dancer would not especially aid in her trapfinder skills, but it certainly would help in her scouting skills and as well significantly improve her martial (ranged or melee) damage alla much more sneak attack possibilities from Hiding in plain sight.
I see her being..ambivilant about a pet, shadow or fur. From a metagame standpoint though a quiet, hard to spot shadow ally would certainly leave her less vulnerable when she's scouting ahead alone...

Oh hey! Had lost my bookmark for the OOC so hadn't checked it for a while. So Sorry to hear of your troubling times Wellard!
Wish you and your family all the best.
PS Thought I leveled Layjiani a while ago, but Nope. Just did now with a Lvl of Fighter with the eye towards Shadow Dancer.
Khaladon |
Echoed from our other game...
So sorry for your family's loss Wellard, there can't be many trials greater than that.
The only blessing is that your father is not in pain anymore and I know he has moved on to a better place/state.
My sincere condolences amigo
