Crom doesn't mind paying. He's like Oprah in that way: loves to take his girlfriends shopping and just charge charge charge.

I blame society. Madison Avenue especially.

Madison Avenue in Hyborea? What a frightful proposition (those new Prada two-handers are all the rage though)!

You know I heard that too? Rumor has it, they're stealing shelf space from those flavor-of-last-month Gucci faux onyx sword hilts with rhinestone inlays. It's a bummer for Golarion's barbarians -- not because there's not that much onyx in the world, because you can always make more of the ersatz stuff -- but because no shelf can possibly support the weight of their swords. That's why they drive Suburbans -- to haul their swords around. Their cell phones are so small they fit neatly into the pommel, with room to spare.

It used to be so simple in the good old days. You just hacked and slashed, pillaged and poked. You didn't need to color coordinate your war gear for fear of being laughed off the battlefield.

Things have become so shallow of late. Who can keep up?

The Jade wrote:

Well, I heard that Saddam had swords so big that he could cut an entire continent in half. Somehow we missed them, though... because they were color-coordinated to exactly match the sand! The man was an evil fashion guru, I tell you!

Funny thing was that Carter wasn't a bad President. He wasn't a great President either. He just kind of was. Wish we could say that about Dubya.

This kinda sums it up for me:

The “Post Turtle”

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old Texas rancher,
whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor
struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got
around to Obama and his bid to be our President.

The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Obama is a 'post turtle'.'
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post
turtle' was. T he old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a
country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced
on top, that's a 'post turtle'.'

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he
continued to explain. 'You know he didn't get up there by himself, he
doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he is up
there, and you just wonder what kind of a dumb ass put him up there
to begin with.'

Now, this could also be applied to our current president, too.......

God, I love this country!!!

Obviously this rancher struck oil on his land, owned the mineral rights, and is keeping cattle as a hobby. Otherwise (being self-employed, without insurance) there's no way he could afford to see a doctor.

That is why I consider myself a conscientious objector when it comes to voting. I will not vote for a “lesser of two evils.” I will only vote for someone that I want to be president not a person that the two dominate parties tell me I should vote for. I think it’s really interesting that in the US, a country that was built on democracy, freedom, and freedom of choice, is so restrictive of those principals when it comes to electing the president.

Big assumption, don't ya think?

I work in a metro area ER, and I see plenty of people every shift who don't have insurance, but that doesn't stop them from being seen by a doctor.

Mr. Gersen,

As Mr. Zombie's legal counsel, I must inform you that you have attributed a quote to my client which he did not make. On his behalf, I must ask that you issue a correction stating your error and providing the actual source of the quote (a Mr. Jade). If you do not comply with this request, I will have no choice but to seek legal recourse (which may or may not involve smiting). Thank you for your cooperation in the delicate matter.

Sincerely,

As long as my client agrees, I don't see why not, especially if the plaintiff has a history of this sordid behavior. Allow me to add though, that any solution must involve me smiting something or someone - that is a standard clause in my service contract.

My perspective is that you vote for the best raw material, then spend the next four years making the most of whoever you end up with. Politicians are always fixer-uppers, some of 'em just have further up to go than others ;)

ps, I always encourage everyone to vote, no matter what your political leanings (or lack thereof). Even if you write in "Mickey Mouse", at least you're registering your vote for None of the Above. If only that was an actual option on the ballot; might be a good way to increase voter turnout!

Just imagine if all your "elected" "representatives" started getting report cards in the form of emails, faxes, and phone calls from everyone who currently tunes out in disgust (or apathy) - they might just remember that they do a job, and that we are their supervisors. Of course, a large part of why we're all in this mess to begin with is that we sort of forgot it, too, and quite a while back the almighty $$$ picked up where we left off.

Re: Accusation of misattribution of quotation, CY 2008

Dear Sir:

Surely one of your training is aware that, if your client is running for public office, there is no legal applicability of "slander," "libel," or "misquotation," vis-a-vis the aforementioned figure. Indeed, radio hosts frequently, and legally, rant that Senator Obama is a racist communist Muslim terrorist; and many industrious (but equally whacko) bloggers write poorly-reasoned exposes explaining how President Bush personally launched a missile into the Pentagon. Therefore, if I accuse your client of inordinate interest in faux onyx, or better yet claim that he eats the feces of diseased rats, said activity falls under the aegis of First Amendment rights.

Smiting, however, clearly falls under hate speech laws. Therefore, I must request that you desist immediately, or else be prepared to visit The Hague at the earliest convenient court date.

Yours (&cet.),
Kirth Gersen

True. Iran has a working democracy, too, of course.

A working democracy is a term we might not want to explore, though, because America's democracy will come up sooner or later. How do you like your choice of candidates lately?

iran's version of a "working democracy":

This is a pretty cool thread (apart from aberzombie being aggresively patronising). It's really interesting to hear people from other countries talking about their elections.

You should be glad that you're all making positive choices - it looks like here in the UK we're going to have a really negative vote. The incumbent will go because he's lost the plot; rather than the Tory having any great policies.

I would like to point out thought that the British National Health Service in the UK is going great guns (60 years old this year - a legacy of WWII).

The only bad thing is a few of those moments when people abuse the word liberal. I feel like I'm a character from The Princess Bride; "I don't think that word means what you think it means."

"liberal" in american modern usage does not mean liberal in the classical (lockean) sense. i understand that this confuses a lot of brits, but "liberal" in the US is a "catchall" used to describe, to varying degrees, socialists, radical environmentalists, syndicalists,(i.e. the political "left"). "conservative", in US parlance, is used for religious zealots, reactionaries, capitalists, (i.e. the political "right".

as you can tell, both are often used perjoratively.

the classic "liberal" used to be espoused by the original Libertarian Party, which was formed by people much closer in thought to Barry Goldwater than to Ron Paul. there was a schizm in the party in the early 80's, when the party was coopted from the true "fiscal conservatives" by the more "social liberals", to use modern american usage...

And that's why I like Libertarianism: I am a socially liberal fiscal conservative who loves his country and its freedom-loving ideals yet hates the bureaucracy that modern government has encrusted itself with which guzzles dollars from the public trough at an alarming rate.. Pork spending is definately a bipartisan issue in Foggybottom.

I also despise those who try to legislate their moral stance on a wider audience (and both major parties are guilty of this). This is one reason Barr is such a lousy choice for the Libertarian party. They whiffed trying for a politcal heavyweight (as if Barr was one, his big claim to fame was the Clinton impeachment brouhaha) and betrayed their core principles.

So maybe you could show me where I threw stones? I have an hour of lecture on slavery in 'Canada' in my Canadian History class.

Your mistake is thinking that I'm in here ragging on America. I love America and have lived there for almost three years of my life. Although I am Canadian my mother, father, grandmother, uncles and my brother are American. I stand in awe of America's achievements and in terror of their nightmares. Believe it or not I care about America and that's why this thread interests me. If you want to talk about Canada's shames lets do so, I have no problem with that. You will find nothing in any thread that in any way can be construed as an apology or excuse or whitewash of the dumb s!~@ that happened in Canada.

But let me correct you on one thing: 'CANADA' TECHNICALLY NEVER HAD SLAVERY. BRITAIN DID. CANADIAN CONFEDERATION HAPPENED IN 1867.

How do you know if you are a Democrat or a Republican or an Independent?
