Fandoms.
Hmmm,...

Yeah, I never reeally had any encounters with 'Fandoms' until VERY recently. And those were observations. I was never involved.

Been to a FEW cons, played with randos both good and 'iffy' (being polite) But generally had a good time.

LATELY though? Sheesh, yeah, I have to agree.

To paraphrase 'Men in Black'
"A GAMER is intelligent and reasonable. A GROUP of gamers are not!"

I do not know what it is about the anonymity of the interwebs that seems to make people think they can just be unbridled jerks. (?!?)
I mean,... WHY?!?!? O_o

Thank goodness for normal, reasonable nerds like yourselves! :)

I knew I was trying to make Justin a fire(balling) bad-arse, buuuuut,...

I just realized, (FINALLY, I admit I'm slow sometimes), if you add up all of Justin's Fireball dmg bonuses, (from feats, spell specialization, Rod, et al, He just essentially cast a 25 dice fireball. O_o

Legally. I think.

And, that's not the MAX max he could get, if he used his other magic ring(s) to add extra dice on top of that. O_O

And THAT ladies and gentlemen, is why everyone cries that wizzies are overpowered. Even though he can only do that a max of maybe 3 times per day.
And if you took away all of his magic gizmos, it would 'only' be in the mid-teens with feats/abilities alone. And still only 2-3 times a day.

Still, for those 2-3 times,... FEAR MY POWAH! ;P

NICE!

Back in the 3.5 Epic Level days you could get those Fireball damage totals even higher! I know Pathfinder had their own version of Epic but I never played it all that much.

I don't see myself running anything at that power level again, unless it's in retirement. Used to take forever to prep those games. I think the highest my PCs got were level 37 or 38. Did some pretty cool stuff, the old Bloodstone Lands Modules converted to 3.5.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

Ah yes the levels where 1 round of combat takes an hour and requires a calculator.

If Alessia is within range of the fireball, it's only going to take out about 2/3 of her hit points, so no worries.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Nah, the tunnel is long enough to basically contain the blast. Maybe there’s a rule saying otherwise, but F it. There’s more fun to explore in the Tomb of Squickiness!

To be honest, THIS is the longest /Highest lvl toon I have ever played (I think, I had a PbP Druid that lasted til about these levels) So I'm not really familiar with the possibilities of high lvl insanity/universe-warping. So when I realized that, my eyes got very big. :)

And technically Justin is a mix-mashing of 3.x, PF Playtest, and PF1, so 'legal' is a point of view. ;)

Still fun though. :D
(Powerful enough to give him the ego, runs out early enough to give him the reality check.) ;P

The NWN video games (using the 3.0 ruleset) allowed you to pick 20+ lvl abilities, and basically make what I called the nuclear wastland spell.
I think it was a 20dice fireball, + 20dice acidball, and maybe other bonus dmg depending on your feats? O_o
THAT was fun one to drop running around in the shareware worlds people had made for that game.

I'm kinda scared to try and get Justin's fireball dmg any higher. (Although I think with the right feats it MIGHT be possible?) His runaway ego is already making it difficult enough to write him without making him self destruct! ;)

Meh. I'm safe. Patrick seems to exceed at finding and reminding me of a wizard's weak points. ;P

Sounds like an official ruling to me! :)

WHY do I now want to see 'The Tomb of Squickiness' as a published 1-shot/side quest adventure???
That title just sounds like it deserves to be on an adventure cover. ;)

Oh man, I had a PC with that Fell Animate spell, it was pretty cool. I had the PCs world hop in the Age of Worms game I ran because I expanded the scope and they ended up in Dark Sun. The Wizard PC was Lawful Evil so he took advantage of being a Defiler for a day and he dropped a Fell Fireball on Pirates chasing the group on the Silt Sea. Half the crew died, then rose and attacked the other half of the crew, the PC boated away as I described the horror of that scene, it as pretty damn neat. Sometimes I miss running D&D but I just don't have the bandwith to run it these days.

I never begrudge people their builds. Honestly, it’s great you guys can be Big Damn Heroes(tm). I like epic brawls, and I enjoy describing the effects of these things (like the fireball). It makes for entertaining gaming.

Max/Celestial Healer and I are in a high-level (book 6) AP campaign run by Janet/Treppa (the Baba Yaga one), and we both have Baleful polymorph. We get up to a lot of shenanigans, and we own a menagerie of penguins now (which is our go to polymorph shape)

THAT is awesome! (I have that AP series, so I am familiar with it.)

I have always wanted to do the high-lvl shenanigans where you take 'Polymorph any object', and carry around a small mouse skeleton or something.
Read a thread that said unless/until you invest a skelly with necromantic energy, it is just an 'object'.
>Throw mouse skelly on ground
>Polymorph any Object it into a Wyvern or Dragon Skelly.
>Cast Animate Object on now LARGE skelly
>MAke it attack your enemies, Who think they are facing an actual animated skeleton (the undead kind) and likely waste Clerical turn undeads and Power-bombs on it
>Enjoy your shenanigans. ;)

(I'm pretty certain in the last fight of the D&D movie, the Red Wizard just cast Animate Object on the Dragon Statue) ;)

It’s funny, but I don’t play video games. I’m not wired for them. The last time I spent serious time on video games they cost a quarter a play. Yet, somehow my plots always remind folks of iconic video games. *shrug* I guess we all read the same books, lol

ROFL,

I love video games, I just stink at them generally. DOn't have the time or patience to ever finish them, no matter how much I like them, or how good they are. Even if I am actually decent at that game, just can't seem to manage it. (ALthough I admit, I DO still try!) ;P

I swear, WAY back in the 'Waybackmachine', (FIrst went to college, 1984)

We used to joke that the big movie companies had our friend under surveillance. Or were reading his mind.
Either way, they were totally stealing his ideas!

For one D&D game, he created a pair of twins essentially the same character, but ONE was human by day, the other was human by night. When they were not human, they were a hawk.
The next thing we know? The movie Ladyhawke comes out.

Another game, he created a home brew artifact that could keep a person alive, even if they were in the negatives HP. It was a stone called the 'DragonHeart'.
The next MONTH, Dragonheart the movie came out!

O_o

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Yeah, it really makes a case for ‘tropes’. I mean, pretty much a video game is a decision tree dressed in tropes. Same with movies, except the decision tree is pre-determined. I think One reason I like TTRPGs is the fact that the players have such agency and can literally reshape the story by their actions. Once video games get to that level of bandwidth I might think of playing

To me it just proves that they should be hiring actual gamers to write the fun movies. ;)

Case in point? I don't know if you like their podcasts or not, (I myself cannot STAND to watch OTHER people play D&D or video games for hours. I don't get the appeal)

BUT, the anime adaptation of Critical Role's first D&D game/season "Vox Machina" has been VERY enjoyable in my opinion. I am looking forward to Season 3 of the show.

Proof that they should let gamers write adventure movies. ;P
Heck, LAdyhawke, COnan the Barbarian, ALL the cheesy 80's fantasy movies, we adapted elements of ALL of them into our games!

Yes!! If you watch the YouTube video of how the "^#$@@# $#!+ Up!!" battle from season 2 translated from live game to screen it's the kind of moment every game lives for, and it resonates because of it.

Big time spoiler warning

Oh absolutely. I’m with you Rags, I’m not a fan of podcast or twitch gaming watching. I did Glass Cannon for a while whilst working long overnight shifts, but it doesn’t work with my schedule right now. The animated vox machina was very good.

I don’t feel bad about cribbing from sources large and small. I once did when I was younger- feeling like somehow it was cheating. Then after reading Joseph Campbell and taking a good look at the media I loved I realized that cannibalism is the standard in art.

David M Mallon wrote:

I read the description and it looks as if the magic makes its own magical grappling hook, yes?

Da Rulez

Spoiler:
A 60-foot-long rope of climbing is no thicker than a wand, but it is strong enough to support 3,000 pounds. Upon command, the rope snakes forward, upward, downward, or in any other direction at 10 feet per round, attaching itself securely wherever its owner desires. It can unfasten itself and return in the same manner.

A rope of climbing can be commanded to knot or unknot itself. This causes large knots to appear at 1-foot intervals along the rope. Knotting shortens the rope to a 50-foot length until the knots are untied, but lowers the DC of Climb checks while using it by 10. A creature must hold one end of the rope when its magic is invoked.

Da Rulez ** spoiler omitted **

If that's the way you want to play it, we can do that--I was reading it as the rope being able to secure itself to anything that a normal rope could be secured (i.e. tied) to.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Yeah that is sort of vague. Let's say it magically stiffens and acts as if secured.

for Devils advocate sake, let us also say, it does not say that the rope cannot carry anything up with it if tied to it? ;P

A grappling hook, tied to one end of a rope of climbing, and then hooked onto something, would still be secure IF (for whatever reason) you or your opponent hit the area with a Dispel magic, or ANti magic shell effect. :)

Just sayin',... getting hit with either a dispel or anti magic shell, while halfway up the rope, would suck big time if it was only attached via magic. :)

I'm not going to complain either way. It IS kinda vague. (which sometimes makes for the most fun interpretations/interactions!) ;)
