I have two ideas for Dark Sun Play by Posts at the moment, though I’d like to run the 5th level standalone as a trial run before I start the 1st level campaign.
What I’d really like to know is how many people would be interested in this sort of thing? It wouldn’t be starting right away, I still have some prep to do, but the cogs have been turning fruitfully on this for a bit now.
The campaign would be for 4 to 5 people, but for the standalone I’m looking at a need for at least 8 people, but I’m not sure if I can get that many.
Is anyone here interested in trying out a Dark Sun PbP? Just putting out feelers for now, so if you are interested, just drop a line in the thread and I will count them up. Thanks for looking! :)

Would you be using the athas.org rules or the paizo ones, or one of your own fiendish imagination?
Sort of a mash-up. Wizards are preservers (pulling magic slowly in advance), sorcerers are defilers (pulling magic indiscriminately as they need it). Half-giants are closer to goliaths, slightly advanced timeline (Pavek runs Urik with a sect of Urban druids, Paladins can be used with the deity beneath Tyr, etc…), a few other changes.

I'm interested, but not for a few weeks prolly. My wife's having a baby, and I'll be pretty busy...
I hear you, our first is at the 5 month mark now, and has discovered the joy of running...every damn where.
Cool dealio! Good response so far considering it is a weekend.
As for psionic races, no worries. Elans are no sweat at all, likely refugee mind lords, and any oddball races are an easy snap-in for Dark Sun, thanks to the whole "New Race" concept.

I'd love to play a Dark Sun game. Hell, living in the bowels of hell (small city, Texas) I'd love to be able to play in ANY game. I've never played PbP though (is it even worth doing?). How long does a turn take? Or does it end up being just like a 5 person LARP style thing (I'm of the tactical preference)?

Have you decide on a roster of who's in the PbP?
Nope, just seeing how many people would be inclined to join at this point. Luckily the first idea supports quite a few. My first thought was if I lucked out and there were too many, I'd just have them pick numbers and open fortune cookies until the "lucky number" matched up, rofl.

I don't have any experience with LARP'ing, so I can't make a comparison there. As for turn time, it depends. I tend to do most of my posting from midnight eastern to 3 pm (when I go to bed), and by then most of the player's posts have aggregated, so things move along decently. Usually if everyone can post at least once a day, that works pretty well, though sometimes there is a pause while you wait for more info (or for the DM to get over his hives).

I am interested, seems every game I play in the gm walks away from due to RL issues; would like to play a game of something. If you want me, just tell me what the rules are; how we are going to create characters, any home rules you apply and what general ethos you prefer the players to be; ie; good, neutral, evil; what books you will be using, limit number of players, how often you will post or expect others to post; practical stuff like that.
On the other question; I suggest the trust choice; I dont believe any player of quality would use a source of information they shouldn't, but many people will enjoy others creativity.

I'm DM'ing a game now I was originally playing in for that same reason. That's part of the rationale forcing me to say I'm not quite ready yet for this one, as I want to be able to devote the time to the game the player's deserve.

So noted, thanks! :)
As far as rules and whatnot goes, I’ve got quite the spiel worked up so far. I’m debating internally at the moment if I want to make player background mockups or not, and then let players choose, rather than outright create them, to allow for players less familiar with the setting. The downside to this would be less player attachment to their characters, so perhaps I’ll do both.

Are you actually going to start a PbP anytime soon? I'm just trying to judge whether or not I should start creating a character. Oh, and by the way, I'd rather create my own character background, but your idea is fine by me.

I had wanted to start sometime in November, but with the holidays approaching, I'm not sure if I ought to just wait out the end of the year.
Well like I said, I've never played PbP before, but I love Dark Sun (I have all of the 3.5 rules adaptations and such), and I've played plenty of other online turn-based games, so I'd be happy to give it a shot, if you'll have me.

I just saw your post JUST now, boy you filled up quick!
BUT, If you have any spaces left, or new openings later, I'd be interested in playing.
I Saw the "Dark Sun" adaptations in Dragon/Dungeon a year or so ago, It looks interesting.
I own several of the 2nd Ed books & things to Dark Sun, but never actually got to play any of them.
I just started playing PbP in JSL's Runelords post, and I'm having so much fun, I'd love to get into another game!
Let me know, I'll play if possible!
Thanks!

lol this is a veritable Platoon of players; hehe you run a military unit in Dark Sun; I have never seen a campaign do that; would be cool in my estimation if players could work as a unit and the gm could handle it; could break the platoon down by squads of say 7 like a normal playing group and do functions but meat as a full platoon at some interval and perhaps large battles; with some thought it could work out; hmm; something to chew on.
