Sense Motive 17+3 = 20. Do I think he thinks he’s telling the truth?

The man is definitely lying as to what his name is. Everything else said by him, if confusing, at least appears on the level from what you can discern. Your newfound friend may be hiding something, or he's simply a loon.

Eldin stands. “I don’t know what this wretches story is,” he says quietly to the others, “but I get the sense that he is more deserving of our pity and prayers than our ire. Perhaps I am being too kind hearted or foolish, but I would loathe to kill him.”

Turning back to the wretch, Eldin asks, “From what direction did you hear the yell for mercy that you mentioned?”

The eccentric waves aside your concerns

It came from the outside space, the husk; it’s not important anymore. Long gone.

Do you know the way to the surface?

The man shakes his head, making “tsk tsk” noises over the broken barrel.

That was hard work too.

The man points towards the pool.

Any chance you could retrieve my candle?

"I don't know. I have a feeling that he's only lying because he's afraid of ...something. Also, he's dumber than a brick, but that's beside the point."

"No. That water looks most uninviting. Besides, candles are overrated anyway."

Male Human Fighter 3

Tyndal points at the floating body and looks at "Vanthus"

"Who's that?"

Body? Oops, I forgot about that.

You know it's a rough area when the sight of a dead body doesn't evoke anything. Another day, another dead guy...sigh...

Seann Eoghan wrote:

Then man sighs, then resumes picking up various bits of trash to stuff against the doorway.

Can I put this door back up now?

Tyndal Maelglum wrote:
"Who's that?"

The man shrugs noncommittally.

Dunno. I think he was trying to get away from the beasts, but the water was already occupied. Apparently, it doesn't like company.

Eldin takes a look around the chamber. Are there any long poles or anything that might be used to fish the body out of the water without getting too close to the water itself?

If not, we could perhaps use Seann’s spear and/or Eldin’s quarterstaff. Eldin will keep an eye on our curious new friend if one or two of the burlier types want to try to retrieve the body?

Eldin Farstrider wrote:

Man, this makes me nostalgic for the old 10-foot pole (..doesn't sound right, at all). Quarterstaff is a bit short, though you could get at it (the body) by wading out a little. Could try to reel it in with Tyndal’s grappling hook (though I feel dirty giving suggestions). Otherwise just a couple of barrels and some broken wooden planks from the smashed barrel.

Male Human Fighter 3

Tyndal pulls out his grappling hook and goes "fishing" for the body.

Tyndal Maelglum wrote:

Just going to assume you will probably take 20 until you catch the thing, so don’t worry about rolling.

Tyndal’s grapnel splashes into the pool a few times, and he alternates between casting, reeling, and cursing before finally passing the hook through the waterlogged flesh of the corpse and locking into the ribcage.

Strangely, he encounters some resistance attempting to haul the carcass back towards the shore. Gobbets of pasty flesh tear free and float atop the glassy surface of the pool as Tyndal attempts to reel in his catch.

Make a strength check if you would.

Splash!

"Holy crap...this guy's heavy!"

Tyndal Maelglum wrote:

The cadaver briefly heaves upwards from the pool, dripping slimy, viscous water, before splashing back into the pool, spraying droplets of water in all directions (though not far enough to reach the party).

The brief glance granted to the party of the anterior of the remains show the flesh entirely eaten away, almost forming a smooth slate.

Though the trapped gases normally allowing the dead to remain afloat appear to have escaped long ago, the body does not sink, even after perforation by Tyndal’s grappling hook.

As you watch, the corpse slowly drifts closer to shore, just out of arms length. Perhaps on a current created by the aborted fishing attempt?

"Let me have at it."

Seann grasps the rope, giving a helfty tug.

BACK AWAY!! NOW!!! There is something in the water or the water is something! Beware! That man's killer is still on him!

Terin steps away from the pool and whips out his sling and a bullet, preparing to launch a shot towards the area around the corpse.

Seann Eoghan wrote:

Seann gives the improvised tackle a tremendous heave. With a sickening pop, the bones of the corpse begin to give way, barely managing to hold the sickening trophy together. With a rush, the corpse flies out from the pool, bringing with it an incredible volume of water.

In fact, the water almost appears to be pushing the corpse.

Before Seann realizes something is horribly, terribly wrong, the pool surges up to meet him. The carcass flops limply aside, ricocheting off Tyndal’s sturdy armor and exploding with a nauseating shower of viscera.

The slimy water washes across Seann, but does not break, as water ought. Instead, the jellylike mass engulfs him, flowing over him, invading every accessible orifice. The liquid is in his mouth, his nose, flowing over his eye sockets. A strange dichotomy of sensations comes over Seann, as the liquid both burns and soothes.

Roll for party initiative please.

Very nicely caught! So close too. You (Terin) can go ahead and release that before the round starts if you'd like.

Seann, you are entitled to a Reflex Save.

AAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!

Terin whips his sling in an underhand motion as the sickening jelly rises out of the water To hit=17, damage 6.

Do we each roll initiative or just go by one roll?

Male Human Sorcerer 2

Save Seann! I'll watch this one (indicating "Vanthus" with a nod) for any trouble.

Terin 'The Beast' Talonshift wrote:

Just the one roll is fine for this go. You're in luck though: Even though it sucks hard, mine was worse (-1 to be exact)

You know what...I changed my mind. 1 sec...

Working up a combat map and a surprise round writeup, will post shortly (it needn't slow turn taking though).

rolling rolling rolling

Initiative:
Harven
Tyndal
Eldin
Terin
Seann
Clear Glop
Anders (on total defense unless he shows back up)

With pain-wracked sobs, Seann manages to smear the majority of the clear, gelatinous goop off him before it utterly coats his person. Uncontainable tears well to his eyes as the residual globules leave throbbing red welts on his palms, and upon the inside of his ears and sinus cavity (2 damage).

The ooze collects at Seann’s feet, piling high as it absorbs the scattered bone fragments, rapidly forming itself into an appalling mockery of a man.

Terin’s swift shot impacts the slime as it transubstantiates, but as the bullet is simply pulled into the transforming glop, it is difficult to determine what effect, if any, it had upon the amorphous blob.

You hear a sickening gargle bubble up from the thing that could be mistaken for laughter.

CURRENT COMBAT MAP.

Male Whisper Gnome Scout 1 / Ranger 1

Well, that quickly went pear-shaped. Now I can see why you actually offered suggestions on retrieving the body :) We'll have to be more wary of your "help" in the future.

Loosening his Bow, and drawing an arrow, Harven moves along the wall, (to E10) seeking a clear line of sight to the creature, before dropping to one knee and loosing his arrow.

Hit AC 11, probably not good enough :). But if it is, he does 2 damage. Wow, minimum damage.

He inspects the creature, seeking any information at all about it.

Knowledge (nature) (1d20+6=8)
Knowledge (Dungeoneering) (1d20+4=21)

At least I got one decent roll out of all them

Male Human Fighter 3

"What the &%#% is that?!"

Tyndal drops the rope, sets his shield and quickdraws his flail. He surges forward and attempts to bullrush the slime back into the pool and away from Seann.

Using my new feat! Imp. Bull Rush

Strength check for Bull Rush (1d20+7=16)

Harven Whisperfeet wrote:

Who, me?

Blinks innocently.

Need to go pick up a pizza, but I will update when I return. Bull rush was a failure (barely too), id. check did come back with some relevant info.

“Seann! How do you fare friend?” Eldin moves up behind the mage, touching the wand of cure wounds to his face. Heals 8 points

Harven Whisperfeet wrote:

The good news is, this thing is difficult to miss. Can’t follow the link from work to see if you included the -4 for melee or not, but we’ll call it a hit either way (this thing will be immune to skirmish damage as well, probably already worked in though, stupid websense! Will check from home).

Harven’s aim is true and the arrow pierces the glutinous mass, tearing through and spraying beads of clear liquid back into the pool.

Harven Whisperfeet wrote:

This monster appears related in some way to the dreaded gelatinous cube of dungeoneering infamy. If what you remember rings true, it might well digest organic or inorganic matter using acid, and pack a paralytic or anesthetizing slime. Such masses are typically mindless.

Tyndal Maelglum wrote:
Strength check for Bull Rush = 16

10/13, 23:56 Glorp rolls 1d20 to do something = 17

Tyndal slams into the slime full force and finds trying to move the creature akin to attempting to push honey uphill. The disgusting glop solidifies briefly, shoving back with equal force, propelling Tyndal back to where he started.

Eldin Farstrider wrote:

Darnit, I forgot about the wand, I was sure you were going to have to touch him! Can’t win them all ;)

Resettling into place after rebuffing Tyndal’s advance, the creature finishes extracting substance from the pool. Drawing up to its full height, the anomalous mass towers over the party, bubbling and dripping foul translucent slime.

Terin up.

Male Wood Elf (+2str,+2dex,-2con,-2int) Druid 3 Experience points-3000

Terin drops his sling, as it didn't seem to do much to the creature, and moves forward to engage the foul slime, drawing his scimitar as he closes and attacks the beast.
to hit=14, damage=8.Terin moved to either E4 or E7 to get to the creature, depending on where the creature is.

Terin 'The Beast' Talonshift wrote:

Frustrating, not being able to tell, eh?

Terin 'The Beast' Talonshift wrote:

It's back in the original square, except now it covers two extra spots as well.

Seann up!

M Human (Oeridian) Wizard (Transmuter) 1 / Favored Soul 2 (Lirr)

"Fuuuh!" yells Seann incoherently as he reels back from the slime beast. He stumbles back to the far wall, readying a spell.

Used my action to move as far away as possible.

Sorry about the slow edit, "someone" was yanking on my laptop cord.
What I meant to ask is if it was a single move, or a withdraw to avoid the AoO?

M Human (Oeridian) Wizard (Transmuter) 1 / Favored Soul 2 (Lirr)
G'mork wrote:

Withdraw.

Thanks ;)

New Map.

Terin’s swing slices a decent size lump from the creature, though it has gained so much mass by this time it is frustratingly difficult to establish if the glop even notices. The foggy jelly separated from whole splashes down hard, then melts away.

Frustrated by the loss of an easy meal (Seann), the creature rears up to it’s full height, then crashes down upon Terin and Tyndal like pounding ocean surf in a hurricane.

The two of you are each entitled to either an Attack of Opportunity OR a Reflex Save to avoid the creature.

Anders is busy keeping an eye on your new friend (unless Sean is able to post, then he’s doing whatever Sean likes), so barring the saves/AoO's, Harven is back up.

Male Wood Elf (+2str,+2dex,-2con,-2int) Druid 3 Experience points-3000

AoO to hit=7! damage=8(if it hits which is doubtful)

Terin 'The Beast' Talonshift wrote:

It is difficult to miss a 15' wide by 15' tall wall of slime, fortunately.

I'll wait on Tyndal's decision before wrapping.

Male Human Fighter 3

Tyndal Maelglum wrote:

GD! I'm never going to get a monster that lives to round three. Pout.

The twin strikes of Terin and Tyndal cut a dreadful swath through the gelatinous beast, neatly severing it in twain.

The victory is short lived, however, as the ponderous weight of the creature hammers down upon the two men. The blob surrounds and swallows up Terin and Tyndal, who find themselves treading jelly (consider yourselves grappled) as the thing reforms into a single mound.

The semi-transparent, gummy slime burns like fire for just a moment, before a soothing cool descends upon you. You find it difficult to hold on to your weapons, as your limbs grow numb.

The paraesthesia increases steadily, rapidly becoming an awful burning. You resist screaming as long as possible, for you know the living goo would only try to force its way into your throat (4 acid damage each).

If you could both make fortitude saves, that’d be great.

DC20 Fortitude Success:

Spoiler:
You fight off the anesthetic effect the creature’s “skin” excretes, and retain control of your senses and mobility.

DC20 Fortitude Failure:

Spoiler:
You lose control of all fine motor skills. Internally panicked, you discover you cannot move! For a hella long time too:16 rounds!

M Human (Oeridian) Wizard (Transmuter) 1 / Favored Soul 2 (Lirr)
