Oh, and excellent job everyone, feel free to give yourselves 15 bonus xp; you deserve it for getting past the guards without raising hell.
Was that 15 or 150? ;-)
Eldin Farstrider |
Not every guard is a polymorphed dragon (though I bet most are).
We have two applicants for the job; they’re both equally qualified, and asking for the same pay. And, oh, one of them is a polymorphed dragon – which one do you think we should give the job too?
Pointing out the prints to the others, Eldin lights the procured lantern and heads off in the direction of the prints, looking for further signs of his companions.
Eldin Farstrider |
To be fair, pay is rarely a factor; it's all about the dental.
Eldin Farstrider wrote:Eldin lights the procured lantern and heads off in the direction of the prints, looking for further signs of his companions.I'm assuming he went right (based on print(s)), is that correct?
Ah, yes, "heads off right, in the direction of the prints he takes to be his companions'" would have been more accurate.
Tyndal Maelglum |
Tyndal moves toward the sound, hoping to keep the illusion that he's a worker. (With quick draw, a weapon is always close at hand)
"Hi there! Don't worry about the noise, we just need some wood to prop up the crapper, so we can get down there to work"
Seeing the other party members, he relaxes.
"Hey, come give us a hand. We found a rope down into the sewer, under the crapper."
G'mork |
Seeing the other party members, he relaxes.
Oh sure, just unbind my suspenseful attempt to get you to attack you own party.
Tyndal meets Eldin halfway along the right-hand (for Eldin) path, bringing him up to speed on current events.
Holding off a bit until I hear which way Harven and Anders head.
There is a little puddle on the floor here, which you are sure wasn't there before.

I had thought about that and considered saying that Tyndal was preparing to clobber someone...but, since we have only bluffed our way in here so far, there didn't seem to be any reason to suddenly switch to violence

Pshaw! Bloody retribution knows no boundaries and takes no prisoners!
I'm following Eldin.
Cool, thanks.
*sniffs at the puddle to determine what the liquid.
The puddle carries the distinctive odor of sea life, of a type you’ve smelled quite recently, but can’t immediately place.
Terin’s knowledge of marine fauna and the party’s recent trip to the waterfront allow him to eventually identify the substance as whale oil. Specifically, the kind used in maritime lamps.
With a foreboding sense of recognition and a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach, Terin places the smell. Rosk. The disgusting man in the alley was soaked to the skin in whale oil.
Terin "The Beast" Talonshift |
Fu@k! That filthy disgusting wretch from the alley, Rosk, is here, guys and he left this puddle sometime after we entered the building. I sense a betrayal and some hard times soon to come. Be ready!
Is there any tracks I can follow(say wet, slimy footprints?)? If so Survival= 5!!!! If no tracks I want to do a scan of the immediate area, Spot=20.
We need to find him immediately and deal with whatever ramifications come with his appearance! Search the whole building if we have to.
Harven Whisperfeet |
Harven also followed Anders.

Harven quickly gets to following Terin's lead.

"Is that... whale oil?"
. . .
"Isn't whale oil flammable?"
. . .
A crawling sensation spreads up Anders' bare nape.
Eldin Farstrider |
“That’s what I wanted to tell you,” says Eldin, keeping his voice low in the cavernous space of the warehouse. “Vanthus, Penkus and Rosk have been here … and it is possible that they’ve been picking off workers who stumble upon their operation.”
Eldin glances around at the stacks of crates, then continues in a low voice. “Now, it is entirely probable that Rosk knows someone is here, but not necessarily that we are after him…the guards assume we are a cleanup crew come to deal with the ‘sewer monsters’ and Rosk may assume the same. Terin, as far as we are aware Rosk has only seen you, perhaps you should wear your hood pulled up, so that you are not as recognisable. We should remain alert for ambushes.”
“As for searching for him – how many exits are there from this place? Obviously the way we entered is one … and you found an entrance into the sewers … I think we should hasten to add a guard to each of those areas, whilst the rest of us search the place in one or two groups. I have a reasonable eye for detail (Search +3, Spot +4) so I will be in the search party. Terin, with his tracking skills should be too.”
“Anders, as for the whale oil … well, hopefully Rosk is not stupid enough to burn down a building when he’s inside it. If he is, we’ll just need to be prepared to get away in a hurry.”
G'mork |
Harven also followed Anders. Survival=15/Spot=22/Listen =26)
While you do not locate any prints except your own party’s along the right fork, you do hear a good deal of wood-on-wood scraping noises, and once, you hear maniacal laughter followed by a splashing noise.
Is there any tracks I can follow (say wet, slimy footprints?)?
I think the sad survival check will get it, especially with Harven to confirm now.
There are definitely dripping prints leading towards and away from the left fork (assuming you are looking from the entrance). It doesn’t appear that Rosk is even attempting to conceal his presence at this point.
As the party reassembles and discusses the potential repercussions of the puddle, a thunderous clash of wood and stone erupts from the opposite side of the storehouse, interrupting the soft babbling of the water from below and otherwise tomblike silence of the building. A mere heartbeat later, an amphora wobbles awkwardly around the corner towards your general direction. A slight crack erupts from its surface, and the vessel splits in twain, spraying lamp oil onto your boots.
G'mork |
Before you’ve quite recovered from this new development, you feel a slight drop in the surrounding air pressure, followed by an incredible detonation from somewhere within the warehouse, possibly the service entrance. The entire building shudders slightly, and the vibration knocks the cover from a nearby crate. Sawdust, straw, and numerous clay vessels spill out onto the floor.
You smell smoke.
Who would have imagined such a well adjusted guy would be a bedwetting firebug?
Eldin Farstrider |
The service entry being the door through which we entered? Which way appears clear, the way back to the door, or the way to the latrines? Was there running water in there? Don’t know if we can fight this fire, but that might be our chance.
“People! Use the feet that Fharlanghn gifted you with – run!”
G'mork |
The service entry being the door through which we entered?
One and the same.
Which way appears clear, the way back to the door, or the way to the latrines?
Both. The entrance you did not take is likely blocked now, judging by the crash, but the two small rooms and the way back to the door are open from what you can see.
Was there running water in there?
You can hear water running from within the hole, but no one has yet dropped a torch or whatnot to look for it. As at least one person has low light vision, it's quite likely they can see the reflection of the river at the bottom of the latrine.
Shefton Rosk |
A bedraggled man carrying a blazing torch dripping embers steps into view from the direction the party arrived (the right fork). Face contorted with wrath, mouth repetitively opening and closing wordlessly, he glares at Terin (as Terin shifts) with hateful eyes.
“NO ONE CUTS SHEFTON ROSK OUT!,” he screeches, heaping his rage upon you.
With a swiftness born of true madness, Rosk presses the torch to his clothes. Flesh melting, hair sizzling, the human candle charges the open container! Rosk impacts the clay jugs at full speed, and the two meet explosively. Lifted from their feet and thrown in every direction, the party scrambles to avoid burning oil, fleshy gibbets, and splintering wood fragments.
DC 15 Reflex and Will saves all around. Will failure = stunned, Reflex failure = 1d6 damage and prone.
The blaze quickly spreads to nearby crates, blocking your egress with flame. Though no additional containers have discharged as of yet, time would appear to be of the essence.
G'mork |
Will=12 / Reflex==12
The force of the explosion hurls the great cat-like beast to the ground. Bells ringing in his ears, he is unable to avoid the charred remains of Rosk’s rib cage, which strike him squarely in the face. Even after death, Shefton doggedly pursues his irrational obsession, determined to vex Terin to the bitter end.
Eldin Farstrider |
That was heroic of me!
Having reacted on instinct rather than conscious thought in a doomed effort to stop the deranged man, Eldin finds himself flung heavily to the floor, but manages to keep his wits about him, and scrambles quickly away from the spreading pool of whale oil.
He looks around, trying to assess if any of his companions were badly hurt in the blast … and his eyes alight on the rows of additional amphora stacked on the surrounding shelves. His eyes, watering against the smoke and stench, widen in alarm.
“Seann! Tyndal! The hole to the sewers – will all of us fit down there?”
The cleric leaps to his feet and feels for the newly procured wand at his belt.
Anders Delymbir |
Reflex save: 6+4+10. 2 points of damage. Will save: 18+1=19.
Anders is pondering how flammable the building is when the suicidal lunatic rounds the corner and explodes himself. One of Rosk's charred arms, blown off just above the elbow, flies across the room in a beeline and hits Anders square in the face.
"What in the name of Tiamat's five unholy sphincters was that? Was that parting of his focking arm?"
Harven Whisperfeet |
Reflex Save (1d20+7=14), Damage (1d6=4)
Will Save (1d20+1=6)
The force of the explosion hurls the small gnome across the room, and he slams into a stack of crates, and slumps to the floor, stunned by the force of the blast.
Luckily, I shouldn't be to burdensome to carry :)
Seann Eoghan |
Will save: 12 + 2 = 14. F*$!. Reflex save: 14 + 2 = 16.
Seann feels the pain of a thousand hangovers as the concussion of the blast knocks him reeling. However, he's able to keep his feet. Staggering towards Terin, nose bleeding, he gestures in the general direction from where they entered.
Tyndal Maelglum |
G'mork |
Seann staggers toward the staircase
Staircase? He must have really been hit hard!
Aight, at the moment I have Tyndal, Eldin, and Anders mobile, and Seann, Terin, and Harven temporarily stunned.
He grabs the gnome like a sack of grain and runs for the crapper.
Toilet’s starting to sound a whole lot better, eh? ;)
G'mork |
Tendrils of flame begin to lick at the ceiling of the warehouse, and the searing heat tugs at your flagging strength. Sweat pours into your eyes, then boils away just as quickly. The haze of smoke parts briefly at the angry outburst of another shipping crate, the path to the two rooms is clear of obstacles!
You feel you should act now, as there’s no telling if you’ll receive a second chance.
G'mork |
Will our heroes escape the fiery doom of the burning warehouse by jumping into a latrine?
Will Lavinia ever find her brother?
Will Kora enjoy the warm embrace of an unsightly gnome?
Will we ever discover what is up with all those mimes?
