Yes SteveO, it's true. I finally learned the truth from my (now) fiance. It devestated me. I've started a support group, in case the trauma ever gets to be too much for you.

Those farting and belching jokes are IMO a part of typical behaviour of male teenagers especially. They are testing the boundaries of accepted social behaviour, and to test them, you have to cross them - it can be viewed as a contest to gross out or offend others, similar to boasting about who can drink the most alcohol and stuff like that.

Normally, they grow out of it someday, especially if they discover the girls for them and develop a serious interest in relationships - or they find a girl that enjoys that kind of behaviour as well, then they get what they deserve. If they still think this is hilarious when they are 30, it is probably a sign that social integration did not work for them...

By reacting to it, you probably encourage it. Don´t even comment on it, other than opening a window after an especially devastating flatulence - perhaps they get it someday.

This is just an observation...

I've noticed that female players (the ones who have played at my table anyways), tend to be abscent more often that their male counterparts.

Yes, although they want us to BELIEVE that they don't and if they do it certainly smells like roses.

FH(just joking ladies, please don't beat me. Nah, let the beatings begin!)

And sometimes it's you who want to do the believing :)

LOL! Oh, Aber, where were you 8 years ago when my wife and I first started dating? I certainly could have used your support group then. :)

And she's a vegetarian. There is NOTHING worse than your first exposure to female flatuence being from broccoli and beans...

I used to game with guys like that. Then I stopped.

That's not just a guy/girl thing, it's an expectation setting thing. I know that the risque comments that my friends pop off with constantly will get a moment of stunned silence when I say it. (Usually I say it deadpan, which helps create the little delay.) It's one of the few compensations for my restraint...

On the general topic: farting and belching with friends can be natural, but discussing it at length and frequently doesn't make sense to me at all. Maybe as the punchline for jokes, but it isn't one of those things I tablulate, you know?

My sister introduced me to D&D back around when 3.5 first came out (I'm 23 at this point and she's 22) and she was the only female in the group but she was in on many of the jokes that the other players were making (no fart jokes, etc. but a fair number of innuendoes and sometimes blatant character actions of a carnal nature, directed at NPCs). I tended to play it a little more solemn, sober, serious. The people I gamed with are great and wonderful people, of that there was never a doubt. Everyone in the group, aside from me and my sister, though, were Jewish and they (The DM and other players, except my sister and myself) would occasionally make jokes about Judaism or Jewish culture and it caught me off guard me a bit initially since I thought they'd have a bit more respect for their ancestry and culture and I NEVER even contemplated jokes like that since it just seemed vulgar, rude and completely inappropriate. I would not hesitate to game with them again, though, since jokes like that were rare, but it did stick a bit in my mind. Has anyone else here noted a player or players in their game who occasionally brings an element of their real world cultural/ethnic/religious heritage to the games? If so, how do the other players/DM react to it?

I'm not even certain if I should have raised my previous post, since it could lead to a nasty flame war depending on responses but I guess I'm comfortable mentioning this here, since topics have been handled carefully and thoughtfully in the past where they could potentially be explosive but it still seems, I don't know, unnerving to bring up the subject. I do need to say, though, that I emphatically welcome people of all cultures, faiths, and other backgrounds as colleagues and friends. Also hoping the moderators don't feel this will be too controversial.

Well, different ethnic/religious/other groups tend to have their own inside jokes which can sound really offending and would come as offending if anyone else was telling those jokes.
I have not come across of such banter of Jewish people (except in some books, typically written by Jewish people) but I have heard plenty of "gay talk" which unsurprisingly can be really b~!++y but still friendly...and people with physical disabilities are well known for jokes which would be truly horrible if they came from anyone else ("How do you address a person who is deaf and blind?" "However you want, he won't hear you.").
I guess it's a bonding thing.

Funny you should ask that lol...my before last gaming group in Montreal were almost all Lebanese Canadians...and when soemething like that happened we all just laughed...but seriously you have not played D&D until you've played it half translated into Arabic (gut busting laughter)...or had a new player who's English was not so great and translated sayings from Arabic (and btw they make NO SENSE WHATSOEVER), but often the results were past hilarious (so much so that you had other Arabic speakers going: WTF???)! Luckily since we were all from the same background, no one was offended...but I would never advise those kinds of jokes in mixed company =)

Be safe all.

Ok here goes...does this ever happen to you or am i the only one...when me and the guys get together to game..they absolutely have to talk about and rehash who has the loudest farts, worse smell, or who pees the longest....Oh and don't forget about the gnomish crotch crickets...I mean ok I can fart, burp, and pee long too...but god every game? I know guys are guys and this is a must for them. I mean hell at least I don't start talking about all the female problems we girls have...(god imagine it..they would all go running screaming in horror if I brought up the "P" word or other problems) although I will admit that it the look of stun on the guys faces when I actually farted and one game was absolutely priceless...

So girls let me know if you have any of these problems or others...It would be nice to know I'm not the only one...
ciao

Thats disgusting! I suggest moving the game to skype.

I think everybody does that to some extent.

My group is all male and while we welcome wives/girlfriends etc they just don't seem to want to learn the game?
Our particular culture/ethnic/religious flavor is the fact that 4 out of 6 players at the table are gay. They pick on the straight guys in good fun and they pick back but sometimes the humor can get a little raunchy.
As far as some of the most offensive Jewish jokes I have ever heard they generally come from the Jewish people themselves because as it was explained to me buy a friend at a barmithzva "if we don't laugh at ourselves or we take ourselves too seriously then ignorant words hurt even more"

The most vile stench imaginable...

So good I posted it twice. Necromancy, indeed!

Hey, Honeycat! 'Sup?

I guess it is an age thing; I dont know where it came from; but my five year old told me she was gonna go poop as big as the bathtub; hehe and she is a little girl. Now; we dont talk like that in our house; so was bit surprized; but she sounds like she is ripe for your gaming group hehe

Farting? I'm still shocked there are lady gamers...

Our group is older (younest is me at 31) and it's all men 80% straight (4 hetero 1 gay). We don't have a lot of fart jokes. Perhaps it's a maturity thing and not so much just a gender/sexual orientation thing. For the record Maturity is not the same as age in this instance. ;-)

Our group had a jar of Vic's Vapor Rub that someone re-labled as "Matt's Ass Relief". We then stench got too bad, we'd pass it around and breath it rather than the smell. We played in the basement of one of the guys and his wife would frequently put a fan at the top of the stairs blowing down to keep the odors out of the rest of the house.

Today we play online with Maptools & Skype. The mics are still able to pick up the sound of the occasional fart but it's really not the same without the smell.

odd this has never once been a problem for me. the only time it ever went into anything vulgar was when I was in a vampire one shot with my gf at the time. we decided to take over the town by conquering the town sections at a time. we of course started in the redlight district. I was in charge of all the rather... seedy get together areas while my gf went to take over the industrial section of the town.

I got the first girl alone in the room and proceeded to declare I attack for bludgeoning damage. my gf just looked over at me and said "really? you're sure its not piercing?" and that was how we took over the town. I conquered all of the escort services and let them spread it for me.

other than that though I've never run into anything with farting/belching/etc and I'm in college.
