I admit, the definition of a cult movie isn't the easiest thing to pin down, but at the very least it excludes mainstream blockbusters, no matter their vintage. Gone with the Wind is a very old movie, but to call it a cult movie is a disservice to that term. Similarly, Spider-man will never rightfully be referred to as a cult movie. Rocky, the Goonies, and Raiders of the Arc were all blockbuster movies in their day, they remain widely known and widely watched.

Liberty's Edge

I like Meet the Feebles.

The Big Hit. Just goofy fun. :)

The Big Lewboski or however it is spelled; hehe.

Ok... here goes...

Already mentioned that I love:

  • Evil Dead(s)
  • Anything Pete Jackson (Especially Heavenly Creatures)
  • Buckaroo Bonzai
  • The BeastMaster
  • Big trouble in Little China
  • Ladyhawke
  • ...And most of the others mentioned.

A couple that have not yet been mentioned:

  • The grandaddy of all cult films...Freaks! Geeble, gobble... Geeble, gobble... One of us! One of us!
  • (Japanese Weirdness(Stop motion animation+Industrial music))/(Man's dehumanization in the face of technology+a HUGE drill bit penis)=Tetsuo The Iron Man. Rad in every way.
  • Is he really a vampire or is he just crazy? The Vampire's Kiss. Nicolas Cage at his weirdest. And that is very weird.

  • Liberty's Edge

Interesting this definition of cult status.
Would Pulp Fiction and/or Reservoir Dogs be considered cult movies?

    Egads!

Forgive us! the Re-Animator is indeed a cult masterpiece. This movie helped establish Jeffrey Combs as a staple of cult movies.

And I was glad someone added Freaks to the list as well. I once watched a double feature of Freaks and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Ummm. Yeah. I dont recommend that. Both great films though. . .

Since I started this thread, I'll throw in my two coppers on the meaning of "Cult" movies. A cult movie is a movie that was not necessarily popular in its day, but has subsequently gained a devoted audience. Plan 9 from Outer Space and The Rocky Horror Picture Show are probably the two best examples of this. While neither had critical acclaim or much notice upon their release, they have both gained a loyal fan base of people who watch them repeatedly and introduce them to others, hoping to spread the movies' subcultural appeal.

Raiders of the Lost Ark? No.

    The Frighteners? Yes.

I would have to say for favorite "cult" and I mean cult as in did little to nothing in the theater and became bigger once they got out on video.

Princess Bride- the number of lines that can be quoted from the movie is Inconcieveable.

Krull- Some might not have seen this one. First watched on USA up all night I think. Liam Neeson's first film I think. Almost makes you feel guilty for watching its so bad.

Boondock Saints- Other then seeing William Defoe in drag its a great movie.

What do you mean other than?!? That's the main selling point IMHO!

    Other favorite "gun" movies:

  • The Killer
  • Hard Boiled

Two of the greatest action films EVER MADE. Chow Yun-Fat + John Woo = Awesomeness to a ridiculous level.

And a horror movie that even scared Rob Zombie...

  • Audition.

This one can only be described as... disturbing.

  • Everyone has mentioned lots of my faves already but I have to add Supertroopers. :)

    Very quotable.

    Fixed your post David! ;-)

hmm.. here goes, in no particular order:

    The Boondock Saints
    Death to Smoochy
    Clerks / Mallrats
    Labyrinth
    Real Genius
Gross Point Blank / High Fidelity

I'd throw in the following, but they aren't really cult movies any more, IMO.
    The Princess Bride
    Office Space

I knew I wouldn't be able to remember all of the ones I wanted to list!

Thanks to Nicolas Logue for reminding me about Beastmaster, Brotherhood of the Wolf and Grosse Point Blank, which in turn reminded me of...

    Better Off Dead

I didn't consider The Frighteners to be cult, but if Jeffrey Combs as Special Agent Dammers is enough to make the cut, then add it to my list.

Thanks to windnight for bringing up Real Genius. That is definitely on the list.

Oh, and add Fever Pitch to the list. The 1997 version about soccer with Colin Firth, not the 2005 version about baseball with Jimmy Fallon.

Time to add my 2 cents:
Repo Man with emilo estevez(sp) great flix right out of the 80's definatly worth the rental fee

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087995/

Beautiful choices all around. Many, many great movies (or silly movies) overlooked by the Oprah-led sheep.

    Couple of others:

"Real Life","Lost in America","Modern Romance",or even "Mother". Albert Brooks humor kills me every time.

"Blood Simple","Miller's Crossing"-another couple of amazing flicks by the Coens.

"Pee Wee's Big Adventure"-this movie is DOUBLE AWESOME! but nobody believes me.

"Nikita","Leon",and a very early Besson, "The Last Combat"

"Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead","Romeo is Bleeding","Streets of Fire","Bad Lieutenant","Mother Jugs and Speed","Nosferatu","M","Freaks"(must get another mention), Jackie Chan's "Police Story" movies, "Warriors", "Once Were Warriors"(if you have not seen this one, get it in the Netflix list--Jango Fett long before he was Jango), "They Live" (...all out of bubblegum), and for that matter "Hell comes to Frogtown" (Roddy Piper, man!),"Ghost Dog" (another mention, it's even in my profile), "Cry Baby","Earth Girls Are Easy","Gunfight"(w/Johnny Cash),"Gunfighter"(w/Gregory Peck), Kubrick gets praised a lot but a couple of his great flicks are overlooked-"Killing" and "Paths of Glory", John Hughes' "Uncle Buck" was a fun underappreciated flick."State of Grace"is a sweet little irish mob story, with some backstabbing amongst friends."City of God"--amazing Brazilian realistic mob story...oh yeah, "Brazil","Adventures of Baron Munchausen". And hey, what about TV shows? Jim Henson's Storyteller should be seen by all the lil Potter-philes.

And one just for myself, "Fatal Instinct" w/Armond Assante. Funny stuff! Christopher Walken in "At Close Range", "The Prophecy","Things to do in Denver When You're Dead".That's all I can think of for right now.

    Liberty's Edge

    Barton Fink

    Scarab Sages

Not sure if other folks consider this a "cult" film, but - A Christmas Story. My chick still cringes at the mere mention of the phrase "You'll shoot your eye out.", and the leg lamp was classic. I was reminded of this film when I just saw the news article that said the director and his son were killed in a car accident with some other guy who was drunk. Sad.

I remember watching The Prophecy. I went around calling everyone bad monkey for like two weeks.

On what Zombie said about the director in the car accident. I would like to point out the the @#$&ing drunk driver was arrested. Meaning the P.O.S. lived after killing those two people. Remember life isn't fair.

    Scarab Sages

Not to mention that the P.O.S. (as you so kindly refer to him) was apparently driving without a license. Hopefully they will give the @$$ the maximum sentence possible.

Suicide Kings is a great flick too. Christopher Walken AND Denis Leary in the same movie? Sign me up!

"Can you say GRAASY ASS?" (being from Texas this line made me laugh so hard I snorted)

I totally agree! That movie is my favorite christmas movie E-V-E-R. I even got my nephew hooked on it when he was young. I have him the "Special Edition" dvd last Christmas (he's 17), and my sister said she wanted to kill me b/c he watched it everyday for a week almost.

One of the TV stations (TNT I think, or maybe TBS) plays it all day long on Christmas Day. Needless to say, I watch at it at least one of those times.

Another movie that I just though of - The Dark Crystal. In my opinion it is one of Jim Henson's greatest achievements. And his company is supposedly working on a sequel. Sweet!

No one mentioned Trilogy of Terror? The scenes with the voodoo idol that comes to life, grabs a steak knife and chases around the woman (she locks him in a suitcase and then the microwave!) can not be overlooked!
And no one should be including LadyHawke - it is one of my all-time favorite movies!!

Not sure if its too new to be cult, but "Monday" by Sabu is hilarious.

Dear god, this post made my day. I LOVE (in no particular order)

Ice Pirates- I was RAISED on this movie. It was one of the first ones I taped when my mom FINALLY let me use the vcr as a lad.

Kill Bill- Don't know why it's considered a cult hit, but it's here.

Blind Fury- I have friends who will drop whatever they are doing to watch this classic.

    Robocop- Need I say more?

Army Of Darkness- I have an army of darkness shirt that my fiancee hates because I wear it to social events.

Predator/Aliens- Not exactly cult in my opinion, but I LOVED the (admittedly bad) novels and short stories that came out of them.

ANY Zatoichi film- A recent love, but I love them all the same. I only recently got a knock off of the sword he uses- it's not an exact copy, but it does help me work on my draw and strike techniques.

Also, The Road Warrior/Beyond Thunderdome(sacrelige to some, but I love 'em), Big Trouble in Little China, The Lost Boys(how come noone mentioned this one yet?) Conan/Red Sonja, Willow(again, sacrelige), Beastmaster, Slugs!(note the exclamation point!), Highlander(strangely, the cheesier it got, the more I couldn't stop watching it), and countless others. I heartily agree with M.Balmer on Starship Troopers(although I am the only person I know who LOVES that movie, it got me into the fiction, comics, and computer animated series) and Monster Squad.

    Liberty's Edge

A few more that I forgot:

    - The Road Warrior
    - Big Trouble
    - Resident Evil
    - Animal House
    - Willow

and, if this counts (it's a TV show):

    - Firefly (WOOT! BROWNCOATS ALL THE WAY BABY!)

    I'm adding two more

    Reefer Madness
    &
    Toxic Avenger

Here's a bit of info. The movie that was first mentioned on this thread - "The Omega Man" was inspired by the fantastic vampire novel "I am Legend", which is being made into a movie staring Will Smith.

A lot of people have already mentioned some of my favorite cult movies, but I have to add a few more that may not have been mentioned (but I might have missed them):

    Heavy Metal
    The Howling
    Forbidden Planet
    The Seven Samurai
Akira (that has surely been mentioned)
    Boxing Helena
    From Beyond
    The Babycart Samurai Series
    Metropolis
All of Bruce Lee's movies (are these really cult though?)
    Scarecrows
    Both Creepshow movies
    Kull the Conquerer

There are a so many other movies, but I just haven't got the time to mention them all.

No it doesn't, but Serenity does. I have to disagree with Resident Evil being a cult movie. A bad movie - yes, a cult movie - no.

I'm a little surprised no one has brought up Krull or John Carpenter's: Lord of Darkness yet....

Someone else actually saw Tetsuo the Iron man? I thought I was the only one.

Let me also mention Suicide Kings once more. Walken and Leary in one movie. Wow.

How about Things to Do in Denver When You're dead? I can't put into words how much I love this movie.

    And now for Rutger Hauer-
    Blood of Heroes.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FYI- he did this to snub Anne Rice who begged him to play Lestat)

True Romance- I consider this to be one of the best films of all times. "You are part eggplant."

Overdrawn at the Memory Bank- Raul Julia in yet another interesting role. Ok, so the effects are weak. But the story is great.

You guys have really made me dig deep for some true gems. I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who appreciates Pee Wee's Big Adventure!

Damn, I meant to say Krull too.

    From Dusk Till Dawn

Most of the films mentioned thus far are in my DVD collection. Offering a list of my favorite cult films would take more time than I can commit because I'm well versed and only so picky but I have a few interesting stories to go along with some of them.

I saw John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness with my mother. The second time I saw it my girlfriend was watching it beside me in a dark bedroom. 30 minutes before the end I excused myself and went to fill my mouth with water. I returned and said nothing. I waited until the end of the film and then went in for a kiss whereupon I shot my water down her throat. This is unsettling enough as is, but coupled with the "I spit pure liquid evil into your mouth" device in the film... it was a typical Jade-psychologically-cripples-a-girlfriend good time.

    Liberty's Edge

    Reefer Madness...

Yep many of these I like but you missed this one:

Deep Rising...a fun monsters on the cruise ship done by the Mummy director. Oh yea and The Fith Elment too.

    Dark Archive

drunken_nomad, I agree with almost every movie in your list except one--Bad Lieutenant. We used to haze freshmen in college by making them watch this horrible movie. Shame on you for trying to get people to actually watch it.
Some good stories come from it, though. There was one particular wound-up guy that saw the movie for the first time on a Friday night. The following night he got pulled over, and almost puked all over his steering wheel (no, he had not been drinking) when the cop said, "You got a tail light out back there."

Anyway--someone earlier on in this thread suggested Oldboy. Everyone should see this movie. Its in Korean (DON'T watch the dubbed version--its better with the subtitles) but still echoes in my head. It will blow you away. Please, if anyone has seen this one, don't post any spoilers about it. This is the kind of film that everyone should see for themselves.

    Repo Man

    Dark Archive

And here I thought Deep Rising was a porn.

    The Exchange

    Food of the Gods Linkamongous!
Don't be afraid of the Dark Linky here!
Pootie Tang Sine your piddy on the runny kine!
    Rollerball (the original one) BUZZZZZ!

I also love any old 70's flicks with giant creatures of some sort.
