Haven't seen Fear Her yet, due to family life yesterday, but there's a huge buzz about the last two episodes around the Doctor Who community.

Comments from one poster who's seen Army of Ghosts already make me feel that Russell T davies may be about to surpass the great work he did at the end of last season!

This might make some of you envious... One of my friends makes stuff used by the Dr Who special effects team. He got to visit the sets today, which'll be used for filming (that starts on Monday) of this year's Christmas episode, including getting inside the Tardis.

I've just watched the second-to-last episode of the latest series (a two-parter), its a right corker! (and one of my all-time who-loving needs has been finally forfilled!)

SPOILER WARNING (VAGUE AS POSSIBLE)

....Childhood playground arguments about ''who would win between X and Y'' finally laid to rest...

Yeah, "Army of Ghosts" was a great episode. Like all two-parters, though, it just leaves me wanting the second half. No spoilers, but I will say that during the Big Reveal in the last 10 seconds of the episode, me and my kids were jumping up and down on the sofa shouting "yeah! yeah!! yeah!!!) in enthusiasm.

Also really enjoyed watching "Love and Monsters" (didn't get to see it until last week). It's probably one of my favourite episodes so far. I loved the mawkish candour of its approach and its surprising moments of tenderness. Plus it had the priceless exchange:

"What's the sister planet of Raxacoricofallapatorius?"
"Clom."

Great stuff :-)

In that case, find a copy of "Phoenix Nights", a priceless comedy about a hopeless working-mens club in Chorley, starring Peter Kay (aka The Absorbaloff of Clom).

Finally got to see the end of Season 2 (or 28, if you prefer).... powerful, powerful stuff. That I can't even speak a word of without spoiling it for viewers in the US.

Now waiting for Torchwood....

I agree; it was a good episode, better than I expected.

I have to admit, I do like the way cyberleaders are made.

Make that THREE big fans. Thanks to Sci-fi for picking it up. Hey, a quick question... Isn't it true that the next season of both Dr. Who AND Battlestar Gallactica aren't starting until early October? I haven't missed anything over the summer, have I?

Nope. Last I heard, though, there isn't an official date for Doctor Who, but the rumor has been October. It's a good season—better than the first.

Christopher Eccleston is really, really good, and Billie Piper is startlingly good as Rose. They're my favorite Doctor and companion... which is saying a lot, because, you know, you never forget your first Doctor.

Although I'm late to the party, I'd like to offer that (IMHO) my favorite Doctor and companion combination is Tom Baker and Mary Tamm (Romana). Chris Eccleston hasn't grown on me yet. There's something seemingly "plastic" about him in his delivery. I just get the feeling, "why can't you (villans) see through him?"

Season two starts on September 29 on Sci-Fi with The Christmas Invasion. It starts October 9 on CBC with New Earth. So watch it on Fridays on Sci-Fi then watch it again on Mondays on CBC (for those of us lucky enough to get CBC).

I'm watching an interview now on the BBC with the new Dr. Who assistant, who's played by Freema Agyeman. Anyone who's interested can check out her profile on www.imdb.com

anyone know WHY they changed actors for the doctor? is this something likely to happen each season? Did anyone else think the Dalecks were just totally coool in the new episodes?

Valegrim wrote:

Story reason: the Doctor's body absorbed too much energy from the TARDIS and fell into a regeneration cycle.

Real life reason: Mr. Eccleston didn't want to be typecast/pigeonholed/however-you-want-to-put-it.

That's my understanding, anyway. And yes, the Daleks FREAKIN' ROCK MY SOCKS.

Valegrim wrote:

Meta-Story Reason: He can and has done so 10 times now over the course of 28(?) seasons, audio plays, novels and a TV movie. It's a Time lord thing and a brilliant way of keeping the show going when the actor playing the first Doctor's health began to fail way back in 1966 (3 seasons into the classic series). Most Doctors last 3 seasons or so with a few lasting as long as 7! For his part Tennent seems to like the gig, being a fan of the old show.

TV/Storyboard Reason: If you look at the structure of last season it is meant to be a one-off season. There was no telling if it was going to be sucessful enough to warrant a second (let a lone a third season). The way the scripts were written, the overall survivor's guilt story arc, and the fact it was a microchasm of the classic series, it was pretty much supposed to end that way from the very beginning.

My opinion, but then I'm almost always right,

In fact, Lillith's reason (Eccleston did not want to be "typecast") is nearer the truth. The Production Team didn't really want to have a regeneration so early in the run, but Eccleston made it clear that he wouldn't be coming back. It was more the gruelling schedule for the series and some behind-the-scenes rows which convinced him to leave after one season. If he hadn't decided to leave, there would have been a different end of season cliffhanger.

Watched the werewolf one th'other night and pointed out the "Torchwood" reference to my hubby. Told him it was a scramble of "Doctor Who" and he had to stop and work it out on paper, then looked at me and said "How the *beep* do you do that?" (I have a habit of blabbing out non-sequiters and bizzare random, but related, facts at times. Trivial Pursuit and Jeopardy are my friends.)

Keep listening: "Torchwood" gets more than one reference in Series 2.

And "Torchwood" gets its own series in the UK on October 22nd on the digital channel BBC3.

Just watched the Werewolf episode; was great; like how they keep weaving in the Bad Wolf thread too; nicely done werewolf also; looked great like the classic monster from many of the pictograms from the middle ages. Was kinda curious about the missletoe though and not wolfsbane and no mention of even trial of the obvious thing: silver; still; a good episode.

The episode airing on Sci-Fi this coming Friday, The Girl in the Fireplace, is quite possibly the best episode of Doctor Who ever.

I so second that! It even has bananas and dancing in it -sort of a theme of the writer. Truth be told the whole season just flat-out rocked with only a few episodes that anyone could put down as merely average, but even those had their Who moments.

No low points for me this year!
GGG

I have to agree that The girl in the fireplace is not only the coolest Doctor Who ever it is epicly great sci-fi and was brilliant telly to boot. For me it was the peak of the second series with only the Impossible Planet/Satan Pit coming close. The series ender was pretty good but I think that RTD is setting a precedent with the way the end episodes are going (bigger events, more enemies in the mix). Once we have got past the impending horror of the Runaway Bride I hope the third series continues the good work. And I hope Torchwood is cool, it is on tv here in about 2 hours (not that I have been counting down or anything).

Bit Torrent. I got most of them the day after they aired in England, and before anyone starts I bought the Season 1 box set as soon as it hit the stands (even though I am dirt poor) and plan on doing the same with Season 2. How could you not support Doctor Who?

Just wait for "Love and Monsters" it is so gamer. Everyone here knows a rules/setting-lawyer like Victor Kennedy. Robert, this would be the guy who would correct you (I figure you're close enough).

I am actually in the UK so I usually get to see it first run, sometimes I have to catch a repeat later in the week (or use a funky ability of my cable provider to replay telly from last night).

Oh, and Torchwood - Good stuff so far.

Yes—big thumbs up here to Torchwood. I was excited when I heard that Eve Myles was cast in it—I really liked her as Gwyneth in The Unquiet Dead (the Dickens episode from the first season of Doctor Who). I didn't expect she'd be playing such a big part, though I'm pleased that she is. (I'm guessing that at some point they'll mention that Gwen is Gwyneth's granddaughter.) At any rate, I liked both episodes quite a lot.

I heard an EVIL rumor that Rose (Billie Piper) left the show. Is this true? Please say it ain't so!

Also, here's something awesome that I found for all us Dr. Who fans out there:

http://gmaskew.com/art/valhallaone/index.htm

Yes, it's true that she's left the show (it was a great episode, BTW). See my post from Aug 14th (on this thread) to see who the new one is.

The Runaway Bride = R-type's favorite thing over the holiday period. The sneak peak at series 3 made me giddy!

The new childrens spin-off series 'The Sarah Jane Adventures' looks good and Torchwood is getting another series! All in all a good year to come for Wholigans everywhere!

Now if they can only make the next Dr be Eddie Izzard and bring back Ace as a companion, I'll be over the moon!

One thing though: Give the Dalek's a rest for goodness sake...

Actually if they ever go back to an over-40 Doctor, Bill Nighy is at the top of my list.

I can take a dalek story once or twice a season. Besides it's good for the ratings. The spoilers for next season (which are taken from the first five episodes) look very promising. That and the fact that Captain Jack will be making a return appearance can only mean more good Who.

The last episode of season 2 made me cry.

Oh, and amusinging I was playing a (female) Elan Erudite when the end of season 1 was played on Sci-fi. running in Heart of Nightfang Spire.

Finally caught the last few episodes of Season 2 on Sci-Fi channel the other night, good stuff. And though I liked Rose as a companion I think they were due to change things up a bit. The series has been really well done overall and definitely captures a lot of the feel and style of the older series.

A couple of comments.

1. We need to bring back some of the other aliens from the old show, we've had enough Cybermen and Daleks for a bit.

2. I'd like to see the Master return (in a new form). Yeah, I know he got wasted in the TV special going against Doctor #8 but really, is he really, really dead?

3. I just don't buy that the Time Lords are completely gone. There have to be a few of them floating around out there somewhere. Maybe Romana is still off in E-space? One or more of them exist in one of the parallel universes like the one that Rose is stranded in?

4. More episodes on other worlds, or at least in other countries - especially given how much time has been spent on Earth in the last two seasons. I don't think the Doctor has spent that much time on Earth since the Time Lords stranded him there way back in the Doctor #3 years.

5. Does the sonic screwdriver really need to be the fix-it for everything? Even before his original one was lost during one of the Doctor #5 episodes, it wasn't used in every episode and mostly it was just used to pick locks and drive screws.

6. How about a more stable control room for the TARDIS? It never used to be so much of a problem to stand up in it before.

7. A few more cameos from earlier companions/allies would be good. I really enjoyed the Sarah Jane/K-9 episode.

8. When did the Daleks get so tough? Yeah, they always had a pretty mean punch with their ray guns but sometimes I recall them getting taken out by the companions with baseball bats or the like (even though they were generally bullet proof, go figure). Mind you, it explains a lot if they are all but indestructable otherwise how would such a weird design ever conquer and destroy so many worlds?

Actually since Davies seems to be using the audio plays and novelizations as part of the series background Romana was probably still Lord President of Gallifrey at the time of the Time War, so she might be gone as well. Also by having them they seem more a myth and more mysterious and godlike somehow rather than the petty politicos of the 4th-6th Doctor days. The Master can pop up no doubt but here's hoping he does more than twirl his moustache and gloat. Who I'm curious about is Susan.

I agree but really I also agree with Davies in that there should be a compelling reason to visit an alien world. That said we had two or three of them (depending on how you rate such things) of them in the form of New Earth, the Impossible Planet, and "Pete's World" this time around.
Legendarius wrote:

I gotta agree there. The sonic screw driver does seem like a writer's out in both seasons. It was destroyed for that very purpose in "A Visitation." The result was a Doctor that was more McGuyver-like.

The bat you are probably refering to was probably the one from "Revelation of the Daleks," which was dosed up with the power of the Hand of Omega. Daleks have always been a presistant mence and the more powers you attribute to them the more likely it is you could see them duking it out with the Time Lords. For that matter it was a Time War, so how do we know the Daleks didn't go back and fix the Doctor's sabotage back in "Genisis of the Daleks" when he set their development back a few hundred years.

All in all though it's great to see the show make a strong comeback.

The Rumour Mill for Series 3 is in full swing.

Spoiler:
The best one so far is that the word "Saxon" will be this season's Bad Wolf. It was spotted on a newspaper headline in "Love and Monsters" and has also been seen in Torchwood (the episode "Captain Jack Harkness" on the modern-day dance-hall doors). I believe it's also in "The Runaway Bride" but I haven't had time to watch my tape yet.

Episode 4 is confirmed to be titled "Daleks in Manhattan" which sees the Black Dalek from "Doomsday" running around 1930's New York. No, really.

And Paul Cornell, writer of "Father's Day" from Series 1 may be re-writing his New Adventures novel "Human Nature" for Episodes 8 and 9, based on the confirmed names for the roles.

There have been rumours of classic foes the Ice Warriors (nay-sayed by RTD more than once), the Sontarans (but unlikely and possibly confused with the Judoon) and the Zygons (based on their use in a planned 10th Doctor novel). But I wouldn't hold out much hope for any of those.

The first episode of series 3 was broadcast last night. I've not seen it yet, but have it taped. Was it any good, anyone?

I saw the first episode of Doctor Who: Series 3 last night, and whilst I'm not an avid fan of the series I must say that I really did enjoy it.

Spoiler:
I quite liked the new 'assistant', Martha Jones, and the snippets of interaction that she had with her family (thankfully none of them seem to be as annoying as Rose's mother, Jackie).

The effects were reasonable, the plotline was slightly above average, and the villain of the piece was quite amusing (you've gotta love a villain that packs their own drinking straw), though the motives behind the villan's actions were still quite questionable (I am trying to not give too much away) even after everything was resolved. I did like the rain scene near the beginning, it was pretty nice idea and well executed.

And yes, near the end of the episode just before Martha gets on board the Tardis you do see a "Vote Saxon" poster behind her, which like Bad Wolf hints at something at the end of the series.

Spoiler:
Yes, there will be one or two Saxon references throughout the series: posters were seen in Torchwood, he was mentioned in The Runaway Bride and seen to have a lead in the election in a newspaper headline.

Loved the Judoon: what isn't to love about rhinos in space? The line about compensation was a right laugh!

I've seen it now. Thanks for the comments, guys.

Spoiler:
Perhaps "Saxon" is The Master? I guess we'll find out sooner or later...

Sovereign Court

Spoiler:
I thought it was a nice touch making Martha Jones, the new companion, the cousin of the character that Freema Agyeman played in series two (who was killed by the cybermen).

I've thrown spoiler tags around all of the series 3 spoilers from the last batch of posts. (When making a post, click the "BBCode tags you can use" button to see how to use them yourself.) Please put them around anything specific to series 3 (but let's assume everybody knows everything that's happened through series 2, and that the Doctor gets a new companion in series 3).

Sadly, I won't get to see the first episode for about another week, but I did get to see Freema on a bunch of chat shows and such. I was pretty worried that losing Rose would harm the show irreparably, but I have to say, even having only seen Martha in a few clips, I think everything's going to be just fine.

I love the new girl!

I've heard a rumour that this series will do a crossover with Life on Mars (the UK's other current time travel series!

It is rumoured that an old Enemy from the Troughton era will be making a comeback.

It is likely to be the Macra, giant crabs from The Macra Terror. They are likely to be in Gridlock, scheduled as Episode 3
