I hate it when people do not even understand the absolutely basic fundamentals of insurance. We get policyholders calling into the office all the time asking REALLY stupid questions. They aren't usually coverage questions, because those are seldom stupid questions (even I forget what things are and are not covered by our various 9600 policy types), but the world at large does not seem to understand what a deductible is or what it means. This is a forgivable offense only if you meet one of the following criteria: You are very young and this is your first insurance question ever OR you are very old and forget your own NAME from time to time.

A deductible is the amount of money that we will DEDUCT from the total amount of the damages incurred during a claim. This means that if you have a $500 deductible, any damages under $500 are YOUR responsibility to pay, not ours.

I had a policyholder call today with the following:

"My son was at a party and got pushed into a pool with his $350 i-Pod in his pocket. It ruined the thing. Is there any coverage for that?"
"No, your deductible on this policy is $1000."
"Right, I know that, but the i-Pod was less than $1000."
"...yes. It was. That's why there is no coverage. More specifically, the damage is well below your deductible."
"So... what does that mean?"
(now gritting teeth)"You pay the first $1000 of any damage you incur. That's what the deductible means. Therefore, since the damage is less than $1000, the insurance is not liable to pay out anything. The responsibility for the loss is solely yours."
"Oh..."
(silence)
"So there's no coverage?"

I wanted to scream. Seriously. Read a pamphlet, people. To those of you reading this who did not previously know what a deductible is, now you do. I have inadvertantly saved some customer service rep somewhere a great deal of frustration.

I suffered nine years in the circle of Hell in which auto injury claims are processed in.

A policy is a damned contract. Why don't people read the damned things?

FH ;P

No, it's covered. It's under the deductable. That's what deductable means: maximum amount covered by insurance. Duh.

No worries Saern. Sorry to hear your teacher isn't that good. Econ 101 was an epiphany for me. I had been thinking along those lines my entire life, but my high school social studies department was the dumping ground for the various coaches, and thus offered little of educational value. I couldn't get any good classes my first semester (I was going to be a philosophy major) and landed in Econ 101. I couldn't believe there was an entire academic discipline that conformed so well to my thought process.

It's too bad; I had a total weisenheimer mc jokester for an eco teacher. He was a blast.

Yeah, she doesn't really comprehend student questions, and she just rambles incoherently. She'll start on real life examples, and you can just see them veer out of the realm of relevancy and then just fall off a cliff all together. The text book is the saving grace- it's well written and moderately engaging, and I wouldn't have a clue what was going on in that class without it.

I saw this messed up story on the news tonight.
In Frisco Tx, just north of Dallas, a few months back, this one kid knocked on the door of a random house and shot the person who answered the door. The victim lived. It was another teenager.
So the perp confessed to his parents. He was "living the fantasy of being a serial killer." So off to wherever he goes; juvenile(?) So,...they charge this kid as an adult. That means he can get bail. So...they gave him......$100,000 bail. So he's back home!!! (the news show showed his $300,000 house in Frisco, Tx).
At least they have a police car out in front of the house watching him until his bail hearing on Thursday; apparently they might adjust his bail up a little bit.
Why can't we, as a society, figure out how to take somebody who apparently admits freely and openly to shooting somebody for answering their door and put them somewhere where they can't do things like that?
If he's crazy, hey okay. Put him somewhere.
If he's not crazy, fine. Put him somewhere.
Why is this hard?
And whoever bailed him out, what were you thinking?!?

I think there should totally be crimes for which bail does not apply, "attempted murder for no reason" being one of them.

Also if I was the president of the world I'd make all punitive fines and bail fees percentages of people's assets/income rather than fixed figures. Let's see if his parents still want to bail him out if it'll cost them 95% of everything they own...

That is insane, but in a way, I can understand if it was the parents who bailed him out - they probably are deluded and still think of him as their darling little boy, all innocent. If it was my kid, I would hope that I'd have left the little bastard in there, but until I'm in the shoes of the parents, I can't really say what my reaction would be.

But what about the judge - couldn't he have denied this kid bail?

What's that cliched phrase that parents use? "You're not in trouble, just tell us the truth." Well, maybe they're not lying sometimes.

The only econ class that I took was in high school and it was awesome as all get out! I learned to play BS and spent about half of every class playing cards with my buddy. When our teacher saw us playing, he would saunter over and ask us "So, how much is in the pot?" Econ was also the birth place of our running Sally joke, who was the individual whom all of the textbook's practice questions referred to. Whenever I or my buddy encountered a conundrum, we would thoughtfully ask each other "What would Sally do?"

But seriously, in regards to economics, what I learned about it was like a combination of math and American history: endless numbers that represent vague trends and arcane terms that seem to be specifically designed to confuse each other. Boooring.

Vattnisse wrote:

I'm working towards a B.A. in English, with a writing concentration. I am definitely going to pursue my Master's Degree afterwards, and hope to go on to a Ph.D., as well. I'm currently enrolled in Indiana University, in a little satellite campus known as Indiana University Southeast (IUS; thus my confusion when people use this as an abbreviation for Improved Unarmed Strike), which is just across the Ohio River from Louisville, KY. However, it's not really a place to pursue this field of education past the B.A., so I'll at least be transferring to the main campus in Bloomington, IN, (with it's library of 10 million books, I think the 10th largest in the USA), and perhaps to another institution entirely (something I just really haven't put much thought into at the moment).

Thanks for the interest! Now complain about something.

Yes, that's macro economics, and is what most people think of as economics. Micro economics is an entirely different beast based on logic, rationale thought, and other good things.

F#$%ing WotC!!!

For there is strength in numbers. Unite against WotC! It may not have occured to them that by doing this they would anger many of those that read and treasure these magazines but they have. I have read many people's posts on several other thread discussing this and have found a great deal of anger directed at WotC. I say that we boycott WotC! I won't buy anything of theirs from a site or store that would give them profit (places like Ebay are okay). I have never actually held a subscription to either magazine for money reasons but I have always read issues and picked them up when I could find them cheap and I love them. I am going to send furious emails to WotC telling them where they can stick their 'online content' and will spread the word. If anyone else agrees with me email WotC, post on other sites frequented by D&D players and let them know, encourage them to rebel!
I don't want 'online content'! I want a real magazine! I want a magazine published by the talented people at Paizo! Not some online crap. I want to have a magazine that I can take with me when I go somewhere! GIVE PAIZO THEIR LISCENSE BACK!!!!! Who's with me!?!!?!

I feel as though 'Crushing Despair' has been cast upon me. I loved those magazines and they were a valuable part of my gaming experience. I won't even be able to boycott WotC products becuase it would mean not supporting my local gaming store (something I am unwilling to do). If I could boycott WotC without taking buisness away from another important part of my gaming life. Da*n you WotC. I just read your press release and it is a load of crap. You make me so SO ANGRY!

I have noticed the change. It sucks but the one shining grace is the vitality of the Pathfinder threads. Dragons are different, giants are different, everything is new and scary. I feel like a new dawn is coming and I am staring towards the horizon with a small group of like minded chums. Its dark now but when the sun comes up the light will bring a new brighter tomorrow. Agreed. Also, what part, exactly, do these little bastards play in the food chain? Unlike mosquitos, which are a healthy source of protein for bats, I don't think anything eats ticks. They lie outside the natural order of things. Thus, I think it's safe to say that they are actually some form of aberration or evil outsider and deserve extermination universally.

Been there done that. Little bastiches!!!!!

I have to disagree with people complaining about powergaming, min/maxing/ whatever. I think the game stands just fine with it. I play with players who make earth shattering characters, and others who play rapier weilding, swashbuckling rogues in a campaign dedicated to eradicating undead. Yet everyone has fun. I think one lesson DM's in general need to learn(and I am one myself, not just preaching where I have no experience), is that despite the work that is put into the game, despite all the work that goes into making a memorable villain, it doesn't matter how fast the final fight is finished. It can be finished that quickly by a gestahlt Half Dragon Solar warblade 20/cleric 20, as it can be by a simple mage 7 who casts phantasmal killer. The length of the fight doesn't matter. Describe it well, and it will be as epic and memorable as any fight that lasts 4 hours and covers 50 rounds. Remember this is a game about storytelling. What does it matter if the characters walk over any opposition they face if they have fun and you get to tell your story?
Finally, stop knocking suplements. Yes wizards is going to come out with a new supplement every month. They are a business, and in it to make money. Don't like the supplements? Don't buy them. Also, yes, players are going to want to play things from the new suppliment they just spent $30-50 on. Why shouldn't they? You say it can't be worked into your world, or that it is overpowered. Very rarely can something not new be introduced. Your character wants to try a new magic system? Sure, he came across that text that taught pact magic in a wizards library. Someone itching to play that swordsage? He is a keeper of a sacred martial discipline from a kingdom long since destroyed. Warmage or Wu Jen? Why not? To the layman, and the world is populated by laymen, all it is is a different take on a theme. Would your average commoner know the difference between a fighter, ranger, samurai or swashbuckler? How about a favored soul and a cleric? No? What about a Spirit Shaman and a Druid? The professions are similar enough that it doesn't really matter. Similar classes can be explained away by a simple dichotomy in the ranks of its practitioners. Not only does the player get to play the class he wanted, but now you game him that much more to build into his character. For you really hardcore 'only the core classes are needed', why not break it down into 4 basic ones? Fighter, Rogue, Wizard and Cleric. Or break it down to three: The Warrior, the Expert, and the Spellcaster. Stop complaining every time a new supplement comes out and your players want to use it. Make it work for your world. Change names. Create secret societies.

P.S. The last time I told a player he couldn't play something in a game I was running we were playing in faerun and he wanted to play a Jedi.

my rant for today?

lets look at armor in the D&d game.

a chain shirt gives you a +4 armor bonus,
a chirana thingy goes over that to increase it to +5,
dastanna can be worn rasing the ac to +6

and then you can still get a shield!

one player who generated a samurai character for a 4th level adventure had the above items in the masterwork quality... totaling maybe 820 gold pieces, from his homeland. sure he was exiled to a distant land by a magical curse and the player is very good. what is my problem?

meanwhile, a suit of elven chain mail, frigin' mithril, is 4,000+ gold- covers the whole body- yet isn't as good as the above masterwork items.
chain shirt, chiranna, dastana, INDEED!
ARGH!

Add porcupines to the list; what good are they; at least wolverines and owls will eat a skunk.

Now this is where druids and I disagree.

humans are a part of nature, everything and anything in the MM can take a bite and pretty much wants to. I was even bit by a rude unicorn once!

technology isn't a valid excuse to rule humans as being outside the natural order, as other animals and insects communicate from one generation to the next and use tools.

Suck it, druid types!
