New to the site, looking for PBP

Recruitment

Greetings everyone. I am new to this site and am looking for some guidance.

I have recently become aware of play by post gaming, and am interested in learning more. I work two jobs and have a family so more traditional methods of gaming such as set days/times or at a table are not really an option. I played AD&D for several years, I then switched to 3.5. I am very familiar with 3.5 and have nearly all the books. Though I often pilfer ideas or rules to incorporate from pathfinder, I know nearly nothing about it and have almost no books.

I have a strong interest in The Kingmaker series. While I am not against learning pathfinder as I have heard it is similar to 3.5, I would prefer to jump into 3.5 as I am more familiar and have much more knowledge in that system.

Pathfinder is Open Gaming Licence. All you'll need is the SRD to play. Dig in and good gaming.

Read this : Doomed Hero's Guide to Pbp
and this: Painlords advanced Guide to PBP

Two very good primers on how to play pbp.

The games here are mainly Pathfinder with a smattering of other rulesets, including 3.5.

If you really want to play, you'll probably have to bite the bullet and learn yourself some Pathfinder :)

When I started I lurked on the recruitment thread for a couple of weeks, just getting a sense of how thing worked, before applying for my first game.

Thank you! I have been reading more pathfinder, and have been trying to understand it more. I am very interested in Kingmaker so maybe I'll start there.

If you are open on Thursday nights 6:30-9:30 their is an open recruitment for a fantasy grounds game kingmaker AP going on Here

I saw that but sadly my schedule will not allow set days/times.

Sovereign Court

I'm running a Kingmaker, unfortunately it's both Pathfinder and Dark sun,you may have seen it, and the conversion is harder to learn than Pathfinder.

If you wanna play any of the best AP your gonna have to learn at least the basics. Stick to core if you need to, but I personally like to experiment (and so I hardly ever get picked, but it leads to me having interesting Games to DM). So, my advice is to look for DM's like me, Storyteller Shadow, and other names that pop up frequently.

The best DM's are the ones with good ideas, yet set in stone story. Like people who play AP that have little pinches and squeezes of other things in them.

Gosh, the more I talk the more I just want to help <_< I'll think of you the next time I decide to play a Kingmaker... Even if it's a little weird.

Also, if you see recruitment, a good rule of thumb is to always look, no matter the post amount. If your curious it's always a good idea to pop in for a peak.

And if you'd like, the first three AP(from Rise of the Runelords to legacy of fire) are 3.5 originally. There are even ways to easily convert them. 3.5 isn't that different. Pathfinder just has more.

the best thing to do is just look at other peoples games they are playing. on the Play by post. Just look under others aliases. The main thing to get your head rap around that it takes a long time to play the PbP vs table gaming so the only commitment is to get on daily to get to know others.

My ears were ringing :-)

Go here and DOT. Players drop it happens, my tables have a mix of people who know the game better than I ever will and newcomers.

I have a current Recruitment up for a Gunslingers game but that's fairly advanced so it might not be the best fit for you at this time.

Hardly ever get picked, you're in 3 of my games ;-)

SPAZ is on the money here, wish I'd read these threads when I first started in PbP.

+1 on this. Those are two valuable resources that everyone should read prior to getting into pbp.

+1 on lurking as well, and not just the recruitment thread. There's nothing like watching a game unfold for getting sense of how they go. A link to my Kingmaker game here. I took this over from the original GM, feel free to read. If you have any questions, post them in the Discussion tab in the game.

There's a couple of things to keep in mind:

1) Most games expect a pace of 1 post a day during the week, and one on weekends. Be ready to make that kind of commitment.
2) Keep trying. You may not make your first few tries at recuitment. Keep trying. Your first game may fail when the GM disappears. Keep trying. If you are enjoying this mode of playing, KEEP trying! It will pay off.
