Bugbear Brigade

Friday, September 11, 2015

I can't believe it's already Friday, which means it's time for another installment of the Friday Publisher Preview! I'm still a bit giddy from our recent in-office review of the paint masters for November's The Rusty Dragon Inn set of prepainted plastic Pathfinder Battles miniatures. The set looks absolutely fantastic, and I couldn't be happier with the communications and production standards WizKids and Paizo have been able to achieve with this set. It really feels like we are firing on all cylinders at the moment, and I'm thrilled to think of what the future has in store.

We've spent some time recently focusing on the NPCs, townfolk, and bar denizens of the set, so this time around I wanted to get back to the monsters. In this case—bugbears!

Since the very start, I've had a personal goal to have at least one kind of "focus creature" per set. My experience shows that if you can get multiple figures of one type (say, orcs, goblins, and the like) in the same set, paint application and sculpt details tend to be more consistent. For this set, my focus creatures are ghouls (most of which we've previewed already) and bugbears (most of which we haven't).

I previewed the Bugbear Tyrant back in June. This week, I'd like to show some of his companion bugbears. A tyrant isn't a tyrant without someone to boss around, after all.

Up first this week is the brutish Bugbear Lurker, whose image comes from the opening illustration of the bugbear section of the Pathfinder RPG Monster Codex. His statistics appear on page 25 of that volume. Bugbear Lurkers double as any kind of nasty bugbear menace, so I decided to slot this guy into the common rarity to help you build up a small gang of them. The Bugbear Lurker is a Medium figure.

Next is the Bugbear Mystic, our take on the bugbear bloodmage from page 26 of the Monster Codex. It's also a goal of mine to create both male and female figures for all the major humanoid races, and in this case the Monster Codex has been something of a godsend in terms of art reference. The Bugbear Mystic is also a Medium common, all the better for building a little bestial cult of your very own.

Perhaps my favorite bugbear in The Rusty Dragon Inn is the Bugbear Flesh Glutton, from page 22 of the Monster Codex. These unruly beasts so love the taste of intelligent creatures that they have grown to a disgustingly large size. The Bugbear Flesh Glutton is a Large, uncommon figure, perfect for peppering your growing bugbear brood with a few loutish brutes.

These three bugbears add to the Bugbear Tyrant to flesh out the Pathfinder bugbear ranks (which also includes a base common Bugbear Warrior from Legends of Golarion and the bow-wielding Bugbear Hero from way back in the Rise of the Runelords set.

What other humanoid "focus creatures" would you like to see in future sets? Drop some suggestions in the comments and we'll chat about it until next week, when I return with another batch of previews from The Rusty Dragon Inn!

Maybe a mwangi themed set. We could use apes and dinos and tribesmen and many many evil reptillians.

I wouldn't expect a lot of dinosaur miniatures out of Pathfinder Battles. There are _so many_ toys of this sort of thing available that I feel guilty taking up a genuine fantasy/Pathfinder slot with something you can get at a drugstore.

I know that's not a fair comparison, and is bad news for dino fans, but someone will have to do a lot of convincing before I put more than a few more dinosaurs in the line.

I don't think so, no.

Might call them dark elves just to be safe, though.

I mean, I get that there will be height and build differences among all member of a species, but come on! The Bugbear Warrior was very nearly a large, whereas that Bugbear Flesh Glutton looks to be about the size of a dwarf (or smaller, going by the gallery images) - something I could almost accept for the Bugbear Mystic, a runt who had to turn to magic because he'd never cut it as a brute force fighter, but I expect warrior classes to be more...beefy.

Sizes are pretty close.

The Flesh Glutton is legitimately Large. Like really on the edge of how big you would expect it to be, so it's not going to be a problem from a "too small" perspective for sure.

That issue aside, I'm really liking these creature groupings, and if this is a sign of things to come, I can't wait for the next set that's, hopefully, sans townsfolk.

There are zero townsfolk in the next set.

I totally get this, and approve. The only exceptions I might encourage you to make are a couple of the flying dinosaurs, since most "drugstore" toy dinosaurs aren't based. A pterodactyl and the smaller flying dinosaur from Souls for Smuggler's Shiv (can't remember its name offhand -- rhamphorynchus, maybe?) would be useful. At present, for Medium-sized flying dinosaurs, I'm having to use a repainted Heroclix Beast Boy pterodactyl that's less than ideal.

Liberty's Edge

The ones in SfSS are dimorphodons - about the size of a dwarf! (One of which, incidentally, was carried off by them in my game.)

Actually very happy to hear this. =)

I grabbed the pictures (these and the previous 2) and scaled them to the same base sizes. They are all pretty much around the same size with the exception of the lurker who appears a is a tiny bit smaller. The tyrant, while the same height, looks leaner than the others, though not by much.

As for the glutton I think he'd be about the size of the cyclops from skull and shackles (?).

All in all pretty consistent.

I love the idea of a focus line, and second, third or whatever the Dark Folk!

Dark Creepers, Slayers, and Dancers, oh my...

Hello Vic, i noticed the Rusty Dragon Inn set has been moved to december.

I assume this is because of the changes with the Bar mini which you already told us about. I think this is a good idea and understand the decision.

None the less it would be nice if you (or Eric) could tell us something about it so we can plan our budget.
As the old release date was november 18th i guess the new one is december 16th?
That would put it 1 week before x-mas which makes it likely for me in europe that i will get it at an even later date because my local flagstore and many others are probably closed from the 24th to the 27th and the 31th to 3th.

This is by no means personal but i sometimes find the information politics of paizo could be better.
I understand it is not paizos fault but wizkids (if it even can be called a fault after all - it seems more like a quality decision from which everbody benefits) but when i see the date has been changed on the paizo product page but there has not being an information anywhere else i am a little frustrated.

Eric has not posted a preview this week (he is probaply being frustrated too) and will probably adress this next week but one has to plan when to spend his money. ;-)

So any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance

Yours sincerly

Marco Massoudi

Seconding this. Only problem is I'm not sure how well (if at all) the art from the Harrow cards would translate.

One thing I notice a complete lack of coverage on, by many mini manufacturers: Kitsune.

It's now been legal to play a Kitsune for the last 14 months and there's really limited availability.

Nagaji and Wayangs would be nice, also.

(Edited out Samsarans, put in Nagaji.)

Kitsune seconded!

Nagaji and Wayang are probably a niche product but could be done too after Tengu and Devils have been done.

We don't have any information to share at this time. When we do, you can expect to read about it in the blog.
