The Power of Dragons Is Yours

Few creatures inspire greater awe than dragons, and Pathfinder Player Companion: Legacy of Dragons dives into the ripples left in these mighty creatures' wake. Whether they help or harm, dragons make a lasting impression, from the legends and philosophies they inspire to the bloodlines they foster.

Inside this book you'll find:

  • New archetypes ranging from the dragonheir scion to the wyrmwitch, allowing players to access draconic appearances as well as lore, powers, and spells.
  • Ways for characters to enlist drakes and lesser dragons to serve as allies, improved familiars, and even flying mounts.
  • New draconic bloodlines for bloodragers and sorcerers, allowing eldritch abilities based on esoteric, imperial, outer, and primal dragons.

This Pathfinder Player Companion is intended for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, but can be easily incorporated into any fantasy world.

Packed with good options for your use

5/5

I enjoyed this book (I got the print edition). It offers good options for use for a player with a dragon bloodline. And I don't mean just the sorcerer bloodlines, although they are in there too. There are options and archetypes for your use. Well worth the price.

Fluff good, not much else is.

2/5

I wanted to like this book. I really, really, really did. The fluff is great, and the 'premise' of the archetypes and drakes are nice.

But.

Both the archetypes, and the drake companions themselves, have some of the worst balancing I have seen in pathfinder. An example of this is the druid, who replaces an animal companion with a drake companion. The drake is actually weaker then alot of normal animal companion choices, and to take the archetype actually removes six of his core abilities just for the drake part of the archetype, never mind the additional abilities changed for the other parts of the archetype.

I really hope at some point paizo revisits the idea of these drake archetypes and companions and does a tremendous re-balancing, as many of these archetypes feel almost unplayable with how bad they can gimp a character.

The new Dragon-themed options are BAD

1/5

I picked up this book excited to create my new "Dragon" themed character and all the options were very weak. Also, throughout the book there were sentences repeated over and over again. I waited months for this issue and I'm completely disappointed. It's the worst Player Companion I've ever read.

Some bad, some good. Sorta meh

2/5

This book has a few good ideas and some great flavor text.

It falls short on the mechanics side though, especially with the archetypes that involve drakes. The cavalier archetype that gets a drake is the worst, and is so bad, I think the writer(s) who made it have never played a cavalier before, it just guts the class.

There are some glaring typos in the book, like a certain fighter archetype replacing a bonus feat at a level that the fighter does not get a bonus feat on.

This book could have been, dare I say SHOULD have been, so much more.

Great Flavor, Great Options

5/5

While I usually like some sections of the player companion line, I very rarely like all of them. This is the rare exception. Excellent character options, monsters, and spells throughout.

To be fair they said no to any other paizo adventure paths getting a hard cover too, so... Maybe we will. ^_^

Some things are worth waiting for. A dragon-related Pathfinder/Golarion book would be one of those.

If this sells well...it would be a positive indicator and get Paizo's attention.

300 posts says nothing. Especially since ~250 of them are probably from the same 20 people ;)

Hey Owen, if it is not too late could we please get more options for the "Form of the Dragon" spells. With all the new dragons Paizo has added over the years those spell have started to seem (at least to me) slightly outdated.

The same 20 people, what on earth do you mean;)

While it is past the time I could add a whole new set of options, it's safe to say we thought about that. :)

This can't arrive fast enough for me, though I still hold out hope for a hardback Pathfinder style Draconomicon.

It's almost June so just a little bit more then a month away.

So will you think about it again sometime in the future?

Let's wait until this book is out and then we can talk about whether we feel the idea needs more consideration. :)

Owen, since I lack a better way to say this: try to push for some Brawler archetypes. None have been released since ACG:Origins, and I think the class has a ton of space for reframing and retooling.

I'm pretty sure Dragon78 is at 10 times per hour.

I just keep waiting every day...like the rest of you.

Rules for Imperial, Primal, Occult, and Outer dragons for half-dragon template, sorcerer bloodline, bloodrager bloodline, etc.

I'm coming in late to this thread so this might not be relevant anymore, but you might want to check out the Blood of Dragons Bloodline Race Trait from Ultimate Campaign. It's available to any race and gives you the choice of low-light vision, +1 on perception checks, or +2 on saves vs. sleep or paralysis. So you can get low-light vision with a trait, and it's even Dragon-based. :)

I am aware of that trait;)

This product is getting MUCH MORE discussion than most other even BEFORE being updated is an indicator of how dragon starved the community is.

The only dragon products that come to my mind are:

-Dragons Revisited (3.5)
-Dragons Unleashed (Pathfinder)
-Dragon Slayers Handbook (Pathfinder)

That is very little considering that almost every AP has dragons in it.

Even though James Jacobs wrote there are no plans to make an "All Dragon AP", i think there needs to be one eventually.

But i would settle for a "Dragons of Golarion" (Inner Sea is not enough) or "Dragon Adventures" or "Ultimate Dragons" hardcover. ;-)

Dragons of Golarion, containing stats for each of the most influential great wyrms of Golarion (from each type of true dragons) and two of their most loyal servants. Sold!

Lol. How many time will that get repeated?

Maybe someone with a lot of time should count how many different posters there really are ;)

Let's see who comes to mind:

-Kazavon from CotCT
-Cadrilkasta from SS
-Mengkare/yourself
-??? the Sovereign Dragon from JR (and a lot more from Tian Xia like the Celestial Dragon from "Pathfinder Tales: Master of Devils"

So that you doesn't need to repeat yourself as well, there are 81 different posters (and I didn't even used the amount of time you imagined). Dragon78 is responsible for at least a hundred out of those 323. XD

But, indeed, this product got a lot of attention. Well... What else if not dragons? (Planes/Outsiders, Mythos and Faith?)

Dragon78 wrote:

I check just to see if you start squeeing...

We have thirty different dragons now. However, we know almost nothing about most of them because the *bestiaries* are quite vague. At least two books, Planar Dragons Revisited (Primal and Esoteric) and Distant Dragons Revisited (Imperial and Outer), are needed... Or at least wanted... XD

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I would love some info on those dragons...maybe one day. Oh and before I forget it's at least a 101 posts now;)

Dragons are lame and cliché, this should be the last product on this theme for at least a few years so they can do cooler stuff like fey, protheans, and daemons.

If only dragons in pathfinder got as much attention as demons and devils:(

I think the lack of focus on dragons is somewhat intentional. The "other" game even has Dragons in it's title. They released the newest edition with a dragon-centric storyline.

I believe it ill be years before we see a Dragon based AP.

I would love something like an "Ultimate Dragons", maybe with some new dragons, and dragon focused archetypes (dragon spirits for both Shamans and Mediums; dragon patrons; mythic dragon based path abilities, like changing into a dragon!). I'm exceptionally excited about this books!

All things considered, though, I suspect that Pathfinder is trying to distance itself from the Other Game. Of course... there's always Starfinder. Dragons... In... SPACE!!!!!!!!

Well, we can just hope that the entire "vote with your wallet" theory is true. It looks like this book is going to be pretty popular, and in theory that means that we'll get more dragon themed books.

They're way too gamy! I'd recommend the liver, maybe pair it with a nice wine and some legumes.

Don't you mean Self Marinated. :-)

I think we need to get his alcohol soaked liver away from those fire breathing dragons.

There's no doubt about it, as it sure is a good enough reason... However, by doing that they are giving up on a potential public!

I'm sure the team has what is needed to write distinct and original settings related to dragons (Look at Dahak and Mengkare), as well as to increase the content about them - after all, look how many fantastic dragons we find in each Bestiary, and yet we know nothing about them. The number of dragons is increasing, but the content about each of them is not.

We don't want merely more dragons, we want more about Pathfinder dragons. Books like "Dragons of Golarion", "Inner Sea Dragons" or "Dragons Codex"...

*wants Linnorms*

Drakes and linnorms are probably my favorite kinds of dragons myself. Though I'm also fond of imperial dragons and think outer dragons are fun. There are individual ones that I like a lot too, like the jabberwock, the korir-kokembe, and the woundwyrm.

It would take a lot revisited books to get info for the remaining true dragons, linnorms, drakes, and more.

Still dragons. Big lizards who breathe stuff. The number of appendages is irrelevant. They've been done and overdone, and I found Golarion to be refreshing in its focus away from all things dragon.

I don´t think there´s actually any real room left in the Inner Sea where you could fit in bigger and mighty dragons.

In TianXia however...they are written into the Lore of the Land!
And nearly any region that is not the Inner Sea has enough place for interesting dragons.
So, perhaps some people should move away from a dragon only thing in the inner sea and instead begin to push for books of other regions containing some more dragon stuff.

Who knows, maybe over in Arcadia a dragon fell on love with a human, elf, halfling or gnome and they spawned a new race together :D

Yea, the problem for me is that while I WANTED to play D&D back during 2nd edition, I was not able to join regular roleplaying groups until early Pathfinder. I completely missed all these dragons that other people are so tired of. The fact that so many GMs and designers actively try to keep dragons out of games now is beyond annoying for a dragon fan like myself.
