Adventurers fight vampires, either as dime-a-dozen villains or masterminds at the center of sinister plots. But what is it like to be a vampire in a fantasy world, to move through a world where your prey can be as dangerous and cunning as you, and lurks in the shadows which you call home? Transform your campaign with this supplement, compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, and explore what it means to be a vampire - to struggle for survival, secrecy, and power in a world that would destroy you if it knew you. Expand on existing campaigns with new content that brings out undead themes in even living characters as well!

Lords of the Night is an 80-page book that includes:

  • Expanded worldbuilding on the nature of vampires, how they fit into settings, and how they interact with the living.
  • A new vampire template designed for easy use by players and GMs alike.
  • Advice and systems for running a vampiric campaign.
  • The Alerts system, which tracks a settlement's reaction to a hidden threat from within.
  • New archetypes for Barbarian and Paladin that express how undead pursue these paths through eternity.
  • Four new prestige classes that enhance the power of undeath, including the enigmatic sussurratore and the terrifying black templar.
  • New feats for players looking to enhance or express themes of undeath and secrecy.
  • New spells, power, and maneuvers with necromantic and vampiric themes.
  • Sample NPCs to speed the process of creating and maintaining a setting's population.
  • A sample vampiric society, the Leatherworker's Guild, that can be inserted into a living city in your campaign world.

Looks awesome! Is a print version in the works?

Plus we might be able to sneak back in the item section we forgot. And I do mean forgot - we released 'em, got 'em tested, everyone excited about items aaaand didn't put it in the master doc for release >.<

Why not just update the thing and send emails to the people who already have it telling them to re-download it?

Two birds, one stone, my friend. It'll be updated either way (and customers informed so they can re-download) but if it's gonna print we might as well do both at the same time.

My main concern before purchasing this would come from power scale and integration. Most DS products tend to be a little stronger or atleast a little more flexible. I'm fine with this of course because all the options are fun and different from what is available with Paizo.

Would this book be good from the stand point of integrating right in for free use by all the players? Or are there things that really create odd issues or power disparities and should be monitored and approved by the GM?

I ask because I tend to simply buy all Paizo and Dreamscarred books anyway if they are good.

The thing to potentially be cautious about is going to be the vampire template presented herein; there's a sidebar discussing how to integrate it into a more normal campaign, and Paizo does of course have rules available on integrating templates into a campaign. It's enough of an improvement that I'd highly suggest referencing those because while it does install some weaknesses it is, overall, an improvement to the character that acquires it.

Aside from that and content meant specifically to support it (blush of life, Greater Vampire prestige class), everything is meant to match up to existing content like it. The spells are balanced to other spells of the same level and class, the new psionic powers likewise, etc. Whether or not we succeeded is of course a matter of the community to judge, but I feel confident in our work.

Psionic vampires? Good lord, my new players are in for a world of hurt....

This is VERY relevant to my interests! You are guaranteed to get my money for this eventually! :D

Awesome, are the prestige classes and archetypes available to non vampire template characters or even the existing Dhampirs? Essentially, if I on a general basis do not allow the vampire template (due to the fact that most templates equal out to a gain in power over others) would I be able to use all the new player options?

You wouldn't be able to use all the new player options, but you'd be able to use many of them.

That being said, the point of the supplement is to allow people to play vampires, so there's a lot of stuff geared in that direction, some of it exclusive to that goal.

Thanks for the info. Think I'll give it a go.

Off of the top of my head, only Greater Vampire, Blush of Life, and Imitate Corpse wouldn't work; everything else is compatible with PCs of all kinds. Lethe Adept has an ability that lets them feed a different way if they happen to be a vampire, but the class isn't built around that; it's just a nifty thematic addition.

Let me know what you think!

The Alerts system is also nicely modular, and should give you a good starting point for running any game where a settlement's normal running may be upset by something terrible in their midst.

Haven't had a chance to fully read through all the details but so far I'd say im fairly impressed. I was rather skeptical of the need for a supplement like this but I can safely say im sold and at the very least my pcs will be encountering vampires in this fashion at some point in time. The flavor of these vampires seem fairly original but coincide closely to that of WoD vampires in which I am a huge fan. The gritty political element of hidden vampire societies has always been very interesting to me. To see this captured but also expanded in the PF universe is refreshing. I really enjoy the idea of the variable weaknesses and the simplified hunting rolls that can increase alert levels that may require PCs to move on to a new area.

1 question comes to mind which may be answered as I read more but I figure I'll ask now while im typing. Are the various different types of full blooded vampires from Blood of the Night factored in this book or does this system sort of combine those 4 types into this singular variable type?

Woo! I will warn you that Alerts are currently on our list of things to edit; Alex and I aren't quite happy with that system yet and want to polish it up for the print release (which will of course cause the PDF to be updated).

Neeeiiiiiitheeerrr? We're aware of the variant vampire types but we didn't feel confident tackling them just yet. They're earmarked for sequel material if this supplement does well enough to justify support, as well as variant dhampir.

Sounds good. I haven't had a chance to read entirely into the alert system yet but I will keep that in mind. Any idea of how long it will be till the system is updated? I don't expect I will be running a full vampire campaign anytime soon but I am curious.

Also, looking over the 4 types in Blood of the Night again it would seem these vampires are essentially a revamped Moroi. Would you agree with that? Would be interesting to see additional supplements on the other 3 styles although I could see people being able to simply use Lords of the Nights and add the vampire traits from BotN to achieve a similar goal.

We're working on Alerts now and my hope is to have 'em done (along with the other small edits) no later than Monday if I can.

As far as the template, yeah, that's about right. We were looking to hit European/Eastern European mythology and call back to the classic vampire template. Honestly we wouldn't have written a new template if we could have avoided it but the original has some...usage problems...when it comes to player characters.

Reviewed! Jade Ripley and Alexander Clatworthy, you have made a darn fine book. I haven't been interested in playing a vampire campaign in a long long time.

Hi Adam, and thanks!

We put a lot of effort into it, and it's great that you enjoyed it (and that the effort paid off :).

I really love vampires, and I was sad to see them become a token monster, and i am glad i got the opportunity to fix it.

Thanks again!

Trying to hold out on buying this until there's news on the print version, but I think your review has made that all but impossible. Thanks. :D

I support people supporting this book. Glad my words managed to make a difference.

Fix it you did. I appreciate you guys making vampires more than bestiary entries again.

Okay, so, to update:

- We've got items done, reviewed internally, edited for grammar.
- Small changes to certain stat blocks are also done.
- Still waiting on a rewrite of one of the Leatherworkers' Guild NPCs.
- Alerts are proving thornier than first advertised.

Update still being worked on! Soon(tm).

I'm considering letting my players aquire the vampire template in the Eay of the Wicked AP we're running. My biggest concern with giving them the standard vampire template is the at will dominate person ability. Does the alternate vampire template included here still yield that?

Indeed, I'd be curious to hear from someone who has this what kinds of things the CR+1 template grants (e.g., do they get the full DR? And how many points of attribute bonuses?). If this sounds reasonably balanced, I'd be tempted to get this to have a way to give my players this template, in a way that doesn't destabilize the game. (Well, I'm tempted anyway! But you know what I mean.)

Significantly weaker template in this book. Though you're also exhausted instead of dead in sunlight. These templates will both strengthen and weaken characters and seem to have been made with the intention for players to use them. I'd say that as long as it's night or indoors that it strengthen more than weakens though.

+2 str and +2 one mental stat.

There's a mind-control option available if the player wants it, but it's significantly weaker than at-will Dominate:

Ze Bewk wrote:
Hypnotic (Sp): The vampire may cast charm person and charm animal as spell-like abilities up to twice per day, with a caster level equal to his character level. At 6th level, the vampire may also cast charm monster up to twice per day as a spell-like ability with a caster level equal to his character level.

Notably, vampires get one major power (the above is one of the options) and also have to take a major weakness.

As noted by other posters, the template does not come with DR. The vampire benefits from +2 Strength and +2 to a mental ability score of their choice. They also pick up a bite and some minor skill bonuses.

Will this also have a discount on the print copy if we bought the PDF?

That is the idea (offering a discount), we're not just sure exactly how it will be set up.

This was my bad. I wrote Alvion Smythe, Loras Blacknail, and the Black Templar PrC, and when I wrote Loras' tactics I wrote them as though he was going to be primarily interacting with living opponents. Normally that's a pretty safe assumption, but..... Obviously that was a bit of a whoopsie here. Good news, I fixed the entry and got it back to Prince a couple days ago.

Good news everyone!

Revisions are in to layout, and the update should be coming Soon(tm), along with the availability of print ^_^

Keep your ears open, folks.

Öhm, sorry if this is not the right place, but I got one version of this pdf sent via e-mail - If a DSP-head-honcho reads this: Could I get a coupon or the like so I can get the updated versions as they come out? Would make no sense to write a review for an obsolete iteration of the pdf.

Our layout person is putting on the final touches. She has, for very good and personal reasons, not been working on it. The PDF will be updated Soon(tm) (at which point End can finally finish his review - sorry bro!) and printing will begin.

My endless thanks for your patience.

Sweet. I have a feeling it will be worth the wait.

There is an error with the alignment part of the vampire template, saying that all undead detect as evil, but this is no longer true in pathfinder, as the detect evil spell says "Aligned Undead" (rather than just "Undead", as it was in 3.5e) meaning a chaotic good vampire should detect as chaotic and good, and not detect as evil at all.

One tiny, totally unimportant detail I forgot to mention. I purchased the PDF via DriveThruRPG. :D

I can see that the PDF on DriveThruRPG was updated on Aug 7. Is this the latest version?

This book is amazing! I got the PDF on DriveThruRPG a few months ago and I love it!

I have a question, however: are you intending to release an expansion for the book with new bloodlines, in the same line as Vampire the Masquerade/Requiem's bloodlines? I know that you would probably get swamped with us vampire fans if you released that!

Ssshhhouuuuld be. Re-download it and lemme know if you see a sidebar in the Alerts section titled "You Must Be This Tall To Join the Angry Mob". If it's there, that's the latest version. If not, we still have an issue.

Well. It's not off the table. Depends on sales and, of course, inspiration.
