Hellih/HK |
Prelude - Hellih Gunsmith
Gunsmith, this is what the sign above the door states. Inside is a medium height and slim built android. Under his skin, one can see illuminating circuits, on his head instead of hair are led tubes in the shape of the crest that change it's color between green, blue and red. By looking at him one can say that life was not gentle with this one, a set of scars on his skin, old and damaged clothes that he is wearing, and his artificial left hand with four claws resembling an arm of a vesk.
He is working on something lying at the desk. He is wearing an armor used by some Vesk warriors, a Defrex Hide. He had to spend a considerable amount of time to adjust it to his built. He looks nothing like Vesk warrior so the initial armor that he got from smugglers in Spike was big enough to make two armors for him. It was yet another thing that he did to make Movan happy.
Movan is a spirit of an Vesk warrior who died long ago during some war. Hellih was unable to find her in the chronicles but she is frequently present from the time he got his left arm. The Gang gave him this augmentation when Hellih lost his arm during the explosion. They didn't do it from the goodness of their hearts, but they needed for him to finish his work. He was working then on explosives used on a bomb attack.
Hellih shakes his head in the recollection of those times, it is good that he got this job in society. It let him set up this shop in Downlow. He looks around and reaches for a cigarette, he puts it in his mouth and light it. Yeah his life made a turn for better after he left pipetown...
Some sort of air-pump turns on as he smokes the cigarette and in couple of seconds whole smoke is exhaled thorugh his nose.
Hellih has possessed augmentation and is a mechanic with prototype weapon.
Movan - Possessed Augmentation |
"The armor looks good on you weakling. Vesk children are usually broader than you are, but at least you don't resemble a drug addict any longer." A harsh Vesk voice can be heard as a semi-translucent figure stands next to the android
"I still don't get it, weakling. Why do you smoke? Androids were supposed to be logical beings. You have no lungs, your artificial air-pump serve no purpose. It is so... disappointing."
Hellih/HK |
Hellih takes another cig and puts it in his mouth without lighting it. He lifts the rifle and aims it at the corner of the room. The barrel is a bit wider with a cut off symbol of pipetown. It is highly modified laser rifle that looks like a best-preserved object that is present in the shop.
He hangs the rifle on his shoulder as he grabs a previously packed bag.
In hars vesk language Hellih responds
"We had that discussion strong-one. I smoke as I enjoy the ritual, it calms me down. This is what was introduced in my software and what others were doing. And I am glad that you like the armor. We need to go, we've got a new mission to do, and it is out of Absalom as I was asked to pack."
Hellih says as he goes out to close and lock the doors. He looks around the alleys, it is a mostly safe part of Spike, but it is still Spike...

Personal Log: The Analog Affair-12
Submitted to cloud storage secure facility 334hdh77d[[x]]-XXXXX
Date: XX-XX-XXXX AG
Chassis update: all chassis systems functioning at full capacity. Upgraded Mk 2 synaptic accelerator integrated and operating successfully. Jump jet upgrade moved to chassis from armor. Armor Loss/Removal risk factor now decreased by 32.567789%.
OS update: Targeting functionality improved after last incremental upgrade. Increased damage potential from better aim confirmed by post-action data review.
OS update (2) **CRITICAL**: Forty-seventh violence subroutine debugging NOT SUCCESSFUL. Anomalous behavior during high stress-violence still reported by third parties. Self-made memory stores unavailable for "black out" periods. Recommendation: seek mystical assessment (and possible debugging) of malfunctioning violence subroutines. NOTE: search terms upon reconnection with Absalom Station and PharasmNet datanets "exorcism," "haunt," "spirit," "possession," and "psychopomp." Seek faction assistance in accessing Lorespire Complex pre-Gap data archives: search terms "The Black," "Andoran." Also, "murderhobo."
Miscellaneous Updates: Fifteenth quarry apprehended and returned for bounty. Comment: buy more medium and/or large-sized waste containment bags for catastrophically defunctioned targets. Consider purchasing extra-dimensional holding option for non-functional quarries. Also useful for still-functional quarries, although functional status non-relevant in majority of apprehension missions. Also, buy cleaning supplies to address reported post-action olfactory issues.
Kit review: Squad machine gun functioning at full capacity. Burning weapon seal not useful, as of yet. Predicted purchase value to be reassessed. Grenadier bracket and grenade option not missed. Assessment: wisdom of grenade offensive capability downgrade - successful. Anticipated additional cost of grenades recovered and put towards future armor upgrades.
Profession update: Known quality among Starfinder Acquisitive's faction resulting in more jobs and higher paying jobs within Bounty Hunter domain. Reputation accrual satisfactory.
Profession update (2): Comedian-Dispenser of Hilarity Jobs rare. Professional strategy (version 4.5) to be reassessed and more open-mic nights in the Downlow planned. NOTE: jokes about biological reproductive habits difficult to master. Differences in joke acceptability ratios noted from one "gig" to another. Also, within each gig, from sentient to sentient. NOTE: job locations dispensing intoxicants have higher ratio of laughs/joke. New strategy: seek out drug dens, opiod bars, direct-VR stimulant shops for better results.

"Erm... howdy y'all! So uh... where's the Venture-boss-dude? And uh... why ya talkin' to yer arm? An' in Vesk? Is yer arm vesk and the rest o' you a robit? Should ah shake botha yer hands 'r just one?"
The quizzical vesk has a badly drawn moon and stars spray-painted on his heavy armor and a stupid grin on his face, accentuated by the weird pattern of spines jutting across his jawline but halting at his chin from both sides.
"Mah name's Zargothrax McDonald! Friends call me Zarg."
Hellih/HK |
Hellih stops talking and turns around to see that at his line of sight is Zarg's chest. He looks up to see his head. His sunlight cigarette in his mouth is hanging as Hellih picks it with his hand.
Relaxing a little he responds in common while extending his hand
"Hellih, gunsmith. Do you mean Venture-Captain? I am not sure, no one showed up here yet. What is a robit?" The android eye the Vesk and continous, his left arm beginning to twitch slightly
"With regards to my hand... the augmentation that I got from black market seems to be haunted. I got some help from mystics working for Starfinder, an odd couple if you ask me that came up with this diagnosis. From then, every now and then I speak to Vesk ghost. And learning Vesk was one of the few ways to please the ghost as if I don't my arm is malfunctioning." explains a bit long Android, he is not concerned about how ridiculous it sounds. As he became Starfinder android realized that there are aliens with more crazy stories than his.
The arm stops twitching and Hellih realizes that the level of pain caused by the arm lessened. He wonders if this is the result of his better relations with the ghost, or the nanites that he injected into his body a week ago.
I've got a feat: Nanite Integration - repairing nanites at Lvl 3 so I will introduce it to his post bit by bit.
"What do that moon and stars stand for?"

"Hrmmm... I wonder who's in there?" He squints and looks unnervingly closely at the arm, then in a booming voice yells (in Vesk) "Hello? Heya in there! Yer hauntin this here arm so does that mean yer dead? You seen mah grandpappy on th other side? If ya do, tell 'im Zarg says hi!"
He steps back, not noticing the spittle left behind on his arm. "Err... not really robit ah guess... andy-roid? Anahow, I also go by another name..."
He makes shifty eyes, then affixes a pair of binder clips to the shoulders of his armor and pulls a ratty beach towel adorned in moons and stars to attach. He then pulls out a paper conic hat with what once was an elastic band attached to it, and throws it in the air. It hovers down slowly (by way of a Token spell) and lands on his head. He 'dramatically' pulls the band down around his chin and strikes an utterly ridiculous pose.

Settle in while we wait for the rest of your team to arrive
You've been summoned to a meeting room in the Lorespire Complex. The meeting room is well furnished and stocked with various refreshments, but Fitch—the meeting’s initiator—is nowhere to be seen.
DuQuesne |
“Hello, everyone! I’m Doctor DuQuesne and it’s a great pleasure to be working with you all. I have joined the society only recently, so, after a lifetime of working in a corporation, this is all quite fresh and exciting!” DuQuesne is an older halfling, with a gentle smile and calm demeanor, wearing casual clothing. He goes around the room shaking hands or equivalent appendages.

Another mission for the Starfinder Society... CONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE TRANSMITTED TO VENTURE CAPTAIN FITCH.
The doors open with a soft susurration of servos and air and in walks an android wearing burned and scratched Vesk brigandine armor, two semi-auto pistols slung low on his hips in tanned animal skin holsters. A well-maintained squad machine gun is slung over his back.
He scans the room, recognizing Hellih as another android, Dr. Duquesne, the halfling, and Zarg, the vesk.
"Greetings. I assume Venture Captain Fitch is tardy. Is this the entire team?"
Perhaps it is an Infiltration Mission, requiring a minimal team.
"I am The Analog Affair-12. I am the twelfth iteration of this chassis. My role within the typical Starfinder Society mission is dispensing of violence. I am also capable of offering Hilarity upon command to lighten the mood. Please disregard the symbol of Besmara painted upon my right-side facial structure. The previous iteration of this chassis was a worshipper. I am not associated with that religion."
"Please excuse any anomalous behavior during times of extreme violence. My violence subroutines are experiencing periodic glitches that do not impact overall function."
"It. Is. A. Pleasure. To. Meet. You."
I hope I did that correctly. The New Iteration Social Cue and Integration blog (Entry 444538jjdh87776X) was not specific on delivery style of said social greetings. Perhaps the addition of a smile...
The Analog Affair's face warps into a rictus of a smile, horrible to behold, awkward and strange and too long. Too much teeth, lips pulled back like a startled felinoid, and cheeks lifted in a weird performance of happiness.
Oh yes. That worked. Definitely.

A shirren suddenly enters the room with a mask obscuring his face!
His body language looks intensely proud and he is wearing aesthetic gear and a collection of trophies.
"Oh dear, I am late again! So sorry dear team! My pharasman superiors try to teach me but sometimes ... oh well ... so ... hmmm ... the spirits always say that you need your counterparts' soul and history! So here I am! Keskodai is my name. I have a name!" he says a litte shyly.
You see that he is carrying an intricate and heavily fortified cradle-jar in which a shirren infant is sitting in his larval stage.
"I would like to to also introduce to you my son. My greatest pride, my son Chk Chk, who as you can see is still in his larval stage. Like many shirren parents, I carry Chk Chk around so my child learns about the world from relative safety. Chk Chk isn’t old enough to truly speak so I apologize that is not introducing himself!"
GM Wolffauer |
After several seconds of silence following the last arrival entering the meeting room, a large holoscreen descends from the ceiling of the northern wall. Fitch’s small, albino ysoki face appears in clear resolution. She whispers quietly to the assembled group.
“I have a very important mission for you. You should be aware that the Master of Stars, the best ship in the Starfinder Society’s fleet, is undergoing extensive renovations. Well, we’ve hit a bit of a roadblock. We need some clophirium to complete the next repair, but supplies have been quite scarce in the Pact Worlds for the last forty years. Luckily, we searched our archives and found a planet in the Vast with substantial reserves: Arniselle.”
Fitch’s transmitted image picks up a datapad but accidentally knocks a screwdriver off the desk while doing so. She flinches as the tool clatters to the ground, then continues whispering in an even lower tone. “NO! I’m sorry about that. They’re finally all asleep, you see."
“Now, back to the mission. We established a lodge on Arniselle about a century ago. It was abandoned when the First Seeker at the time decided to refocus Society resources closer to the Pact Worlds and abandoned several outposts in the Vast. Unfortunately, our scans show that Arniselle has undergone substantial seismic activity during the intervening years, and now the whole lodge is underwater. We assigned a special team to go investigate; they’re all kalos, call themselves the Manta Corps. Maybe you’ve met them. Anyway, a ship dropped them off, but the Manta Corps never reported back for their pickup.”
Suddenly, a loud shriek erupts from the holoscreen, followed by quick pitter-patter footsteps. Fitch drops the whisper and turns away from the screen. “Hey, you’re all supposed to be asleep for another hour! Back in the beds before I duct tape you in and leave you to find a way out!”
Fitch turns back to face the screen. “Anyway, the current First Seeker agrees with me about the importance of this mission and has authorized me to mount a second expedition. We must finish repairing the Master of Stars, and to do that we need Arniselle’s clophirium. This could be dangerous, so I’ve selected you, some of our most experienced agents. Go to Arniselle and investigate the submerged lodge. See what it will take to re-establish our presence there. And try to find out what happened to the Manta Corps. Best case scenario, they’re just down there working, but it’s not like them not to report in."
“I’m sending you information on the planet now. Oh, and remember! There could easily be intelligent life on this world. The lodge wasn’t staffed long enough to really explore the oceans. If you meet any new species, be diplomatic! It’s not only our mission as Wayfinders, but locals might help us with getting that clophirium as quickly as possible. Any questions?”
The Analog Affair-12 |
The Analog Affair steps forward. "Greetings. Four questions:
1: Probability of non-sentient life conflict/danger?
2: Availability of Society-supplied heavy gas/liquid immersion and environmental management/reduction equipment?
3: Manta Corps personnel files for defunctioned body identification?
4: Further data on clophirium, subset:dangers, subset:identification?"
Hellih/HK |
Hellih shakes hands with the newcomers, he looks at The Analog Affair-12, thinking to himself that his routines are a bit extreme.
He listens to Fitch and wonders if Kalos that he met when exploring drift are the same ones. But he thinks that the chances are slim.
I think Hellih talked with Kalos in 1-04 Cries from the Drift.
"When exactly Manta Corps was supposed to be picked up? And how do you harvest clophirium, will we be equipped with appropriate tools and expertise on how to use them?" asks android in a steady voice. He wonders what kind of weapon he should take as he knows his favorite rifle would not be effective in the underwater environment.
Yet again he is glad to not be breathing, at least one problem is out of the way.
GM Wolffauer |
"There is always a chance of non-sentient life that might pose a hazard, but we don't have many records from Arniselle. We weren't there very long and it was so long ago."
"You all have armor, don’t you? That will let you breathe underwater just fine. Hopefully, you’re all decent swimmers. You’ll also want to be sure to bring some piercing weapons; those work pretty well underwater."
Fitch explains that the ship which brought the Manta Corp to Arniselle had arrange to pick the team up a few days later, but they never showed at the rendezvous point. As for the team itself, "There are four of them. The leader, Deepspeaker Alluguoth is a spiritual type. He doesn’t say much, but when he does, I’d advise listening. Then there’s Mantarider Ushuul; he’s a lot more talkative and loves to show off his gun. You might have seen Mantarider Suulhu-Huur around the sparring rooms. She’s a fighter and uses some kind of fancy cryopike. Lastly, there’s Wavetreader Vhoosh. She’s even quieter than Alluguoth, but that’s probably a good thing. She can be a little bit unnerving. She always wants to know about how many people you’ve killed. They’re good agents, all of them."
She clarifies that you won't need to do any clophirium extraction, just secure the base and figure out why the Manta Corps missed their pickup.
The Kalos/Manta Corps from Cries from the Drift, are indeed the same individuals who went on this mission. Everyone can give me a Diplomacy or Culture check to see what else you might know or find out about the Manta Corps. Additionally you can give me an Engineering or Physical Science check to see what you know about clophirium.
DuQuesne |
"What lovely children you have, misses Fitch! I myself only had 5 kids, but currently I'm over 20 grandchildren! Don't worry about the mission, we'll explore the lodge and see what's keeping our companions back. I hope it isn't anything dangerous!", comments DuQuesne, smiling and remembering his own family.

Between the various rolls you have all the knowledge
--
The Manta Corps are all kalos. Kalos are an aquatic race from the Brethedan moon of Kalo-Mahoi known for their bluegreen skin, batlike wings, and glowing, protruding eyes. These four kalos are quite tight-knit and go on assignments together, typically deployed to underwater locations.
The Manta Corps prefer action-oriented assignments, and have been known to avoid assignments with a lot of detail or paperwork. Because of this, they’ve earned a reputation as underwater commandos but also as a group that doesn’t do well in overly social settings.
Kalos often redesign weaponry to function much better underwater. A PC who learns this information knows where on Absalom Station to purchase underwater weapons (Starfinder Alien Archive 69.) While such weapons generally cost 10% more than a regular version of the weapon, a PC who succeeded at this check can purchase such weapons at the base weapon’s normal price—many kalo manufacturers on Absalom Station are on good terms with the Manta Corps and want to help however they can.
--
Both lightweight and thermally stable, clophirium featured prominently in many early Drift engine designs, but natural sources were limited, and Pact World planets with clophirium deposits quickly exhausted their supplies. Alternate Drift engine designs that do not require the mineral have become more popular in the last 40 years.
It would be possible to update the Drift engine of the Master of Stars with a more modern design, but the entire engine structure would have to be rebuilt, taking years. Finding additional clophirium supplies is the fastest way to get the Master of Stars up and running again, even if the Society must identify a new mine to do so. The substance is incredibly difficult to find, so any charts or maps identifying existing veins of clophirium would be invaluable to the repair operations.
--
If there are no other questions for Fitch, you have time to make last minute purchases and slot your boons. The journey to Arniselle will take place tomorrow morning.

"Well, I am a team player and sometimes a social butterfly who loves meeting new people! Especially these Manta Corp sound great! Once a crew mate called me “the galaxy’s friendliest death priest,” and I wear the badge with pride." he says giggling.
"You know, I am very fond of option bars and other artificial means of stimulating my choice centers, but I am always careful not to let myself overindulge …. usually. So maybe we could visit this store and see which underwater weapons we would like to buy! Choices, choices!!" he says again smiling.
Hellih/HK |
Hellih listens to Keskodai, tilting his head as he speaks.
"Death priest? You are an odd one, I give you that. I will join you in visiting the shop. Maybe I will aid you in not getting ripped off when paying for the weapon."
He looks around himself, this whole team was a bit weird, even by his standards. But Hellih never installed software to help him judge aliens by their first impressions. Then he looks at his hand, and it is not that he is all normal either.
@GM: I looked at the weapons and basically I fell no need to upgrade at this moment so I will: sell my existing laser rifle, buy a new underwater laser rifle ;) And when we fly to Arniselle I would make it the prototype of Hellih (needs 8 h of work).
Zargothrax McDonald |
Zargothrax's main weapons are claws and spells, so I think he'll be fine underwater.

The Society personnel freighter Peregrination into Night carries you for the 13 day journey through the drift. The captain, a jovial female shirren named Zhast, is pleasant and easy going. She offers daily (and delicious) meals in her private quarters, which she painstakingly prepares herself.
The only other ship you encounter during your trip is an organic arkship. The biomechanical ship openly broadcasts its affiliation with the Xenowardens, along with free informational download packets on recent ecological events. Hidden among various reports on the plant growth rates of various worlds, the most interesting piece of information in the packet is a report on plans to “cruelly place the last known feathered renkrodas into captivity in small Castrovelian wildlife preserves.” The ship doesn't stop or hail you and is soon gone on its way.
Once the Peregrination into Night reaches orbit around Arniselle, Captain Zhast sends you down in a small submersible vessel. With this unarmed submersible, you can reach the lodge’s coordinates only a short distance away. The Peregrination into Night is set to retrieve you in two days at your insertion location.
Now is the time for any prep you want to do before arriving at the lodge in the submersible.
Hellih/HK |
Hellih locks himself for a couple of hours each day of the journey to tinker with his rifle. He comments a different design that allows the rifle to be effective underwater, and do mental recordings of his thoughts on how it could be improved.
He begins with modifying the grip of the rifle to be better suited for his vesk shaped hand. Later on he changes the battery holder to accommodate two magazines at the same time.
When Hellih works on his rifle he is completely absent from everything else.
When they receive the recording, Hellih attempts to aid with the understanding of the message

“You will hardly find someone more optimistic than myself, but in this situation, I can’t find a good angle. A missing crew of Starfinders inside an abandoned underwater lodge? It’s very likely they were attacked by a powerful creature or group of creatures, or were caught in some sort of accident or trap. Or perhaps they ran into a discovery so stupendous they are down here still exploring it. One can hope!”

Locating the lodge proves to be no problem. You find it roughly where you expected, though it is a quarter of a mile under the surface. On your decent, you spot some sea creatures. Mostly various forms of fish, but nothing very large or threatening.
The lodge appears to be intact, though the northern edge is pushed into a cluster of rocks and boulders with obvious signs of other past impact. On the eastern side you see the large airlock entrance.
Hellih/HK |
Hellih listens to the joke told by the other Android but does not find it funny. Yet he hears some voice in his head that he should show an appreciation, some aliens need jokes for their morale. In the end he chuckles.
"Good one."
After the life bubble is cast, hellih looks at it closely and attempts to touch it. After his hand pass through it, he lights his cig and begins to blow smoke in different directions. He is surprised to see the smoke leave the bubble and not enter it again, neither his not anyone's else.
"That is interesting, it is like semipermeable membrane of some sorts. I wonder if I could create cybernetic version of this?" thinks out loud.
Turning to Zarg he says

GM Wolffauer |
The submersible is pretty basic, no scanners to speak of.
As you bring the submersible around to the airlock, you notice that broken parts of the exterior are haphazardly repaired, exterior lights are active, and the front door is decorated with a strange broken chain.
You set down close to the airlock with no problem, and prepare to exit the submersible.

DuQuesne |
“It seems the locals have put our lodge to good use. I wonder what the policy is in such situations… but let’s go greet them and ask about our companions, I suppose, unless someone wants to do some sneaky-stealthy first!” DuQuesne does some silly gestures, mimicking stealthy steps, and swims outside the vehicle, where he waits for the rest of the party.
I’m assuming it’s one of those vehicles that have a open hole on the floor to swim outside, or some sort of airlock as well
"Quite the view!" he exclaims through his comm unit.
Hellih/HK |
Hellih makes a guess
"Maybe the chain symbolizes that this place should be locked? Either something was locked inside to not allow it to escape, or the place was locked to not be used." He wonders if they should find a different entrace.
Android takes off his boots and try his new augmentation. He still remembers when he was swimming to recover the bodies at the hell's swamps. He shakes his head coming back to the present.
"On my way to join you DuQuesne." says as he grabs the rifle in his hands and tries swimming using only the fins.
