Halgrin |
WIS (survival) : 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19
Halgrin bends down and points out some signs to the others.
"Several humanoids with large feet, came out of the woods from there, then went back the same way. Looks like we have a trail."
Horat "The Bulwark" |
"Then let us follow them. To their doom.", Horat replies tersely.
Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Nature: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Quietly, Horat says:
"What is that?"
Halgrin |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
INT (nature): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
"Look, don't let the tusks fool you, I'm a city boy. I have no idea. Is it like a giant? Are green giants a thing?"
Gram Luthar |
Nature: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
The sight of the creature stirs Gram from an episode of deep thought.
Troll. he says, frowning. Disgusting creatures. They climb up out of the well at the Yawning Portal sometimes. Pain in the ass to kill. Unless you hit them with fire or acid, they can regenerate from any wounds.
Halgrin |
"That's a troll?! Wow. Those dumb masks kids wear at Trolltide just do not do justice to how ugly these things are."
Halgrin turns up his noise in disgust. "Or how bad they smell."
Halgrin draws his sword.
"Let's get this over with. I don't want to risk my uniform smelling like that thing forever."
I think we should prepare surprise round actions.
Halgrin |
I was thinking more along the lines of letting the casters pop open some long distance mayhem. And then we let the troll come after us. I can tank the troll if/when it comes rushing in, to protect the squishier members of our crew.
Pawn's Dilemma GM |
That's up to you guys. Go for it whenever you're ready. I would encourage you not to over-think about what precise set of actions to throw out in a surprise round as that ends up taking days in PBP. This happened a LOT in another game I ran and it really discouraged me from giving PCs time to plan. ;) So just figure out something reasonably good and go for it!
Horat "The Bulwark" |
"We strike together from range. For my part, a chill to slow the troll's advance."
Chill touch when we're ready.
Gram Luthar |
I'll try fire off a bolt before switching to melee when it closes.
He draws and loads his crossbow, and when everyone is ready, he fires.
Light Crossbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Halgrin |
Surprise attacks roll with advantage, Gram. And, Horat, chill touch requires a ranged spell attack.
Halgrin, grips his sword tightly, but remains completely still as magic spells fly past him.
Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Gram adv: 1d20 + 1d4 ⇒ (15) + (2) = 17
Horat attack: 2d20 + 1d4 ⇒ (19, 8) + (4) = 31
Gram and Horat hit. Roll damage.
Init: GHHKT: 5d20 ⇒ (18, 13, 19, 1, 15) = 66
A spell hurls from the worlds along with a crossbow bolt as Katra chants to bless the party. The troll turns in alarm, looking ready to charge the woods.
Gram and Horat, GO!
Horat "The Bulwark" |
A ghostly, spectral hand wraps lightly around the troll's throat.
Necrotic damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1
The hand then remains there until the start of your next turn. During this time, the target is unable to regain hit points.
Horat summons another hand, while keeping his halberd ready, to guard the others from a charge.
Chill Touch: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Necrotic damage: 1d8 ⇒ 8
Halberd: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Gram Luthar |
Gram loads another bolt and lines up a shot. Dont forget! Fire and acid!
And he lets loose another bolt.
Light Crossbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Bless: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Bless: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Halgrin |
Halgrin steps into the troll's view. "Hey, ugly, let's dance."
He then shifts his stance into something more defensive, and smirks at the troll.
I'm basically anticipating a charge by taking the Dodge action. Attacks against me have disadvantage.
Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Sorry Halgrin. The troll beat your initiative. It's going now after Gram and Horat. All, note that you're going to have a harder time hitting the troll if you're firing through each other.
Gram's crossbow bolt glances off the troll's thick hide while Horat's spectral hand clamps down harder on the giant throat. The angry monster rushes forward into the edge of the woods and, randomly deciding to focus on Katra, strikes at her three times with a bite and two claw attacks. The dwarf stands strong raising her shield and manages to avoid all but a bite on the shoulder (5 dam).
Halgrin or Katra: 3d2 ⇒ (2, 2, 2) = 6

Dams: 1d6 + 4 + 2d6 + 4 + 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 + (5, 3) + 4 + (4, 2) + 4 = 27
Party GO!
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Horat steps up to Katra's left, his halberd's blade vibrating. He then swings at the troll.
Booming Blade on halberd: 1d20 + 5 + 1d4 ⇒ (15) + 5 + (1) = 21

Gram Luthar |

Gram moves ten feet northward, reloads, and fires another bolt at the troll.

Piercing Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Botting Halgrin.
Halgrin dodges in front of the troll, trying to stay safe from its massive claws.

Dam: 1d6 + 4 + 2d6 + 4 + 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 + (3, 4) + 4 + (6, 5) + 4 = 31
The troll bites Katra once and misses Halgrin twice with his claws.
5 damage to Katra. Party go.
Horat "The Bulwark" |
"While acid or fire will keep it down, we must first bring it down!"
Booming Blade: 1d20 + 5 + 1d4 ⇒ (14) + 5 + (4) = 23

"Come and get it, ugly!"

Gram moves further north, reloading and firing another bolt.

Damage+Sneak Attack: 1d8 + 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + (4) + 3 = 13
Halgrin |
Right, I forgot about Bless.
Bless: 1d4 ⇒ 2; Total attack = 16

Forgot Katra's earlier flask. I'll assume she's still doing that.

Katra lobs another flask of acid, which also strikes the troll. The foul fearsome foe throws back its head and shrieks in pain then attacks Katra with all its might. But the dwarf stands strong, deflecting every blow with shield and armored hand.
Everyone, GO!
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Horat continues hacking and bashing at the beast, to brutal effect!
Booming Blade: 1d20 + 5 + 1d4 ⇒ (18) + 5 + (1) = 24

Halgrin and Katra continue attacking the beast, Halgrin with his blade and Katra with her acid.

Halgrin Dam: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Dam: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Halgrin strikes the foe hard while Katra's acid sears its skin again, keeping its wounds open so the troll can't heal! The giant cannot stand up under the sustained pressure and falls. You stand over the monstrous foe, the terror of which you've all heard stories of. Trolls destroying an entire village that couldn't stop it from healing itself, killing dozens of guards, relentless, brutal, indomitable, savage. Your confidence grows as you stand over the massive corpse.
450 XP each. That brings us all to level 3! Go ahead and tell us about your level up in discussion. Archetypes time!
You see that it was guarding a niche in the rock wall that doesn't seem to lead anywhere.
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Horat begins hacking at the troll's blubbery neck, to be doubly certain that it will not rise again.
As he does so, stratagems appear in his mind's eye. A new level of focus is open to him, and he will make use of it!
Seeing the niche, he says:
"Perhaps this is an illusion."
As he approaches the niche, and gently presses the tip of his halberd against the rock.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Investigation vs illusions: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Aye!
Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Horat doesn't detect any illusions!
You find a small niche in the wall that can open up into a small compartment. You find two small metal faces engraved into the wall with small metal levers below them. Engraved above the faces are the words "One of us lies and one of us always tells the truth. Ask one of us one question and then choose a lever."
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Assuming Katra shows us what is in the compartment.
"We should decide what we shall ask before we say anything to the occupants. Perhaps which lever the other face would suggest."
Halgrin |
Halgrin turns to Horat.
"If you think that will help. This magic stuff is far beyond me."
Out of character, I'm endorsing Horat's idea.
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Anyone else want to weigh in?
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Yeah, looks like it's my idea up.
Horat nods., then asks the same question of the right face.
"That granted less insight than I had hoped for. Nevertheless, it seems that we have little option but to pull a lever. I suggest the other face's lever. Are there any objections?"
He looks at the others.
