The Pathfinder Beginner Box Heroes Miniatures Set is a very impressive initial offering from WizKids. The excellent paint job and attention to the little details are not something I am accustomed to seeing in pre-painted minis. From detail on Ezren's robe to Merisiel's tattoos to the markings on Valeros' sword these minis do not disappoint. An excellent set of pre-painted minis!
I have posted a full review as well as an unboxing with more detailed photos at irontavern.com.
They look better in person than they do in photos, the sculpts are very nice, and the painting is easily much, much better than the pre-painted plastic iconic (and monster) minis from the "other guys'" boxed starter sets and collectible miniatures line.
I might be able to do the painting better myself, but there's no way I could mass-produce painted miniatures of this quality for only $3 each.
My first impression with Wizkids' plastic miniatures came from their "MageKnight" line, which I felt were some of the most crude pre-painted plastic miniatures I'd seen since the 1970's and 1980's (there used to be one or two companies producing cheap pre-painted green "army men" back then - a sloppy dab of flesh paint on the face, and a sloppy dab of black paint on the rifles - they were hideous.) I had low expectations for Wizkids' work on Pathfinder miniatures, but Wizkids seems to have come a long way since their MageKnight miniatures - there's no comparison between those, and these beautiful Pathfinder Beginner Boxed Set miniatures. If their other Pathfinder miniatures are anything close to this, then I would say that Wizkids have hit a home-run.
Where do I begin? Purchased the set for Merisiel to provide an option for an Elf Female Rogue character. There just aren't many options for this combined class, race, and gender in pre-painted miniatures (PPM). The digital scupts and masters looked promising. When they arrived I was very impressed. Merisiel looked great. The pose, the boots, the knives all screamed stealthy Eleven rogue. Valeros may be one the best looking two weapon fighters available in PPM. An Ezren is truly a good looking Wizard. But Kyra just blew me away. She may be the most detailed miniature ever released in PPM. The designs on her robes, the scoll work on her sleeves, the details throughout are far better than anything I could paint myself. Only the best pro-painted miniatures can surpass this. If there was anything that these figurines could use is a nice ink wash in some areas. This is truly a minor point that does not take away from 5 stars this set deserves.
I enjoy these miniatures. I initially pre-ordered them because the sculpts, style and color looked superior to the DDM pieces I have. I was very pleased with the appearance and quality of the minis. The plastic is a little harder than DDM's which will hopefully keep all the weaponry from "melting" over time. The sculpts actually lend credence to the fact that these minis were designed to be RPG characters, which hasn't always been the case with the DDM sculpts. Kudos. You have my attention. I am excited for the cases' release. Keep up the good work.
VERY nice product - they really made sure on the quality for these... I could see myself buying this AND another set of 4 with some of the other Iconics - Most likely Harsk (you need a Dwarf), Lem (token small figure) and 2 others - I am thinking the Paladin for one and some caster for the 2nd...
I am really happy with the Pathfinder Miniatures product line. I am definitely in. Hopefully, I will purchase them in the greek FLGS, otherwise I will order them on-line. I like to play the game using miniatures and I can't wait to enhance my DDM collection with the Pathfinder Miniatures. :)
Funny thing I'm definitely buying this, but not for me. I'm buying it form my daughter's 10th birthday. She's been wanting to play with the adults for awhile now,and I saw the announcement for the Beginner Box and I knew it was the perfect way to get her started. And the iconic models will make explaining things way easier.

I'm getting the set (and boxed set) for the completist in me. But I'm also getting a set for the godkids, when I teach them.
So do these minis come with stat cards like the DnD mini random sets did? Otherwise what is meant by "fully compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game"? I have a bunch of pennies and bottlecaps that are fully compatible with the pathfinder roleplaying game too :D
I agree! She looks great and will add some variety to the cleric minis I currently own. Plus one of my friends has decided to play THAT cleric as we delve into Pathfinder for the first time!

Not sure where to find it but Vic has confirmed no stat cards are included.

I think this is intended to reference the fact that these minis are not only representative of creatures from the game, but that they're also sized per gaming rules, for example, a medium mini will have a 1" base, a large a 2" base, etc.

Cleric looks dumb, like she fell out of Aladin's Lamp
The cleric is the primary reason I preordered a set. She has a distinct ethnic flair that, while not typical for normal european settings, is very appropriate.
Also, these minis looked better in person at Gencon than they do in these pictures. Especially Valeros.

Totally agree.
I was awestruck on the paint job, including the details, of the minis displayed at GenCon. If Heroes and Monsters, RotR and future sets look that good, I am going to be one very happy person.
I've pre-ordered a case of monsters and this set from my FLGS.
I hope WK bring out the other iconics as well.
We play with a VTT for maps, but everyone still prefers the tactile sense of moving your character with your hand rather then clicking on a computer screen (and, of course, rolling the dice rather then clicking on a dice number generator ....
I posted this in the Heroes & Monsters thread, but it's worth reposting here:

The first images we showed for the Beginner Box Heroes set were indeed the digital models. And I'm confident that *anybody* who saw the paint masters at Gen Con will attest that they look significantly better than the digital models. (If you haven't looked at the Beginner Box product page since Gen Con, you should—the ones with the white background are the digital models, and the front-and-back photos are the paint masters. But the photos don't really do them justice.)
I'd mentioned before in this thread that WizKids had told us that the production minis had the potential to be even better than the paint masters. The reason for that is that the paint masters have three types of paint applications: masks, tampos, and freehand details. The process of masking (which account for most of the paint on each figure) doesn't vary significantly between paint masters and production, so the masked bits should be essentially the exact same quality. The same is true of the tampos (which are essentially printed-on details, like the fine gold designs on Kyra's cloak). But WizKids actually made improvements to the masks and tampos after seeing the paint masters, and that's one reason that the production minis can present an improvement over the masters. Also, the few freehand details on the paint masters (like the eyes and eyebrows) won't be freehanded on the production figures, so those details should be more precise and regular on production minis than they are on the paint masters.
Well, just today, we got a set of samples using the preliminary production paint applications, and, as promised, the masks and tampos translated over extremely well, and the formerly freehanded details do show improvement over the paint masters. Across the four minis, there *are* two spots that don't look quite as good as the paint masters; those seem to be an issue with paint thickness, which they intend to adjust. So right now I'd say that two of the minis are a bit better than the masters, while the other two are better in places and not quite as good in others. By the time we see finished production figures, I expect that all four will indeed look better than the masters do.
Our intent is to seed the rest of them into future sets. I *believe* that, among the Heroes & Monsters and Rise of the Runelords sets, we'll be releasing three more iconics.

I know you guys have no control over this, but is the Release of these planned to coincide with the Release of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Beginner Box?
I am planning a Release Event and if this was going to be out the same day I was going to Buy 5 sets and give a Free Mini of their characters to the first 20 players.

We hope so, but we can't say for sure at this time.
Is there a reason why the the Beginner Box Heroes is not on the Product Schedule for October? As well as why there are some divisions of products in September between PDF's and Print copies?
