Pathfinder Chronicles: Rise of the Runelords Map Folio

My copy is also missing these maps. Are they supposed to be included?

The page count matches the product description - 2 poster maps, and 15 single sheets.

I see not covered:

- Catacombs of Wrath
- Seven's Sawmill
- Shadow Clock
- Graul Homestead
- Hook Mountain Clanhold
- Several 'Lair' maps from Spires of Xin-Shalast

I don't yet have PF#4 and #5, so I don't know what's included in those but not in the Folio.

Seems fairly intentional that it's some of the maps, not all of the maps.

This may have been covered somewhere else but I didn't see mention of it in this thread...

I just noticed that on the Varisia area map in the Marsh Fens what has been labeled The Sunken Queen in other pathfinder products is now labeled as The Face Pyramid.

Is this an error, or an intentional name change?

As a newcomer to Pathfinder, I think that maps in a folio is not enought for this product.
Why not include NPC sheets, character empty sheets, battle maps in the miniatures scale...?

OK, we have the maps and it's then useless to flip all the book for the descriptions.
Now, for the PDF version, it's usefull to print the maps in cheap method (laser or B&W inks) for the players. They will have a 'memo' of their adventures.

Been using it for awhile and not that impressed. Always hate when I go hunting a map and rifle through the lot a few times before I realize the map I want isn't there. Grrrrr

I purchased this as a PDF a few moments ago and was completely disappointed to see maps missing. The clocktower, the sawmill? Where'd they go? Why not release these as PDFs so we can use them? Now it's back to the flipmat, hunched over, drawings locations. Seriously, release the maps! You've already got them, right? I've now paid for them twice. Put them online as PDFs. Let me make use of my color printer and make some wicked battle maps.

The poster maps of Varisia and Sandpoint are about 4x larger, but all of the others are pretty much the same.

Does this product contain a pre-Earthfall map of Thassilon? That's something I'd be eager to lay my hands on, because my players are already itching to confront Runelords in addition to Karzoug. They'll be in Xin-Shalast during the next session, and have made no secret of the fact that they only consider Karzoug the first challenge.

These are still the exact map from the AP, and are not scaled for battle, as zooming in to that size would pixcilate the map almost beyond recognition. To create battlemat they would have to have the cartographer re-draw the map in a bigger scale.

Fair enough.

But yes, this product is mostly reprints of key maps from the Rise of the Runelords adventure path. It also includes two poster maps, one of the town of Sandpoint and one of the region of Varisia. Both maps are the same as the maps in the Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide... but four times as large.

If you can cheaply print the maps from the PDF, and don't want the poster maps (or can print them on big sheets of paper from the PDF), then yeah, there's less of a reason to buy this product.

In a lot of ways, this product's an experiment. Creating and printing it is relatively cheap for us, since it IS mostly reprinted maps (the two poster maps had to be redone as bigger files, which cost a little bit), and we've had a lot of requests for a product like this (either for Runelords or for other Adventure Paths). If it turns out that people don't want or need a product like this, that's fine. If they do, that's also fine. (Better than fine, since that brings more money in to the company, of course!)

I just bought the folio PDF and I was very disappointed to find that there was not a printable, mini ready version with out GM notes. Will Paizo be putting out an updated RotRL anerverary map fllio? Or battlemat ready, printable version?

If you select and copy/extract them (for instance with Adobe Reader), then you'll get the maps without GM symbols.

I just got this in the mail and it was not opened or anything so I know I have the maps for it. But I think they need to include all the maps for every area if you look through the Map Folio you do not have a map for Catacombs Of Wraith, Habe's Sanatorium, Foxglove Townhouse, The Seven's Sawmill, The Shadow Clock, The Graul Homestead, Hook Mountain Clanhood, Raid On Sandpoint (but That can just be used or put into the normal map easy, River Caves, Jorgenfist with the Black Tower on it, The Pit and Caverns, Jorgenfist Library, Lamashtu's Shrine, The Ravenous Crypts, The Festering Maze Of Sloth, Lair Of The Hidden Beast, Heptaric Locus, Ghlorofaex's Lair, The Eye Of Avarice. Yes all of these places do not have maps. Also The Ravenous Crypts Of Gluttony Needs to be updated.The map In the Map Folio Does not match the one Campaign Book. Yeah So if anyone knows where I can get the maps I have listed above please let me know.

This particular product came out five years ago, and was designed as a companion to the original edition; the maps were all reprints from the original AP volumes. (And the product description does say "key locations," not "all maps"...)

The way we do Map Folios has evolved significantly in the past five years; newer folios contain only poster maps of major areas, not all the little locations. The only way to get those maps in print is in the respective volume, and digitally in the PDF of the volume.

Hmm, for what it's worth, I wish the Map Folios were more like this old one. In contrast, some of the newer ones like Carrion Crown, I'm not even sure what I'm supposed to do with it. Your adventure is largely railroaded between various towns (not meant as commentary) so it's really only good in understanding how the land is laid out, which isn't really all that important to the narrative. On the other hand, the Rise of the Riselords map pack has practical maps that I can pull out and use. Even better would be a map pack that includes 1" squares for every location in an adventure path. That would be like a dream come true...

I agree. The newer map folios aren't very useful, although I had no choice but to purchase Kingmaker for those big beautiful maps of the Stolen Lands. I miss the old TSR days when big adventures used to put a compiled map booklet at the back. Incredibly handy.

I like maps so I don't really have any problems with the Folio but I think it might be better in the Pathfinder Accessories Section. They kind of fit with the item cards, nice addition but not really needed to run the AP. Also since they come out twice a year the Item Cards and Folios would go together nicely that some DM's would like and some not so much.

This would work for me. I have the AE RotRL and I'd love this, in fact, it's already on my list.

Here's the deal—Adobe Reader treats full-page images, like the two large maps in this PDF, as background images, and the current version of Reader apparently doesn't let you extract background images anymore. I'm not sure when that changed, but it used to be that you'd just have to Ctrl-Click (Windows) or Option-Click (OS X) to select it.

At any rate, it's not something we're preventing—it's something Adobe is preventing you from doing. You'll need to find another PDF viewer that supports extraction of background images. (If I had a recommendation for one, I'd offer it, but I've never needed one.)

I haven't tried extracting background images specifically, but in general I've found NitroPDF lets me do a lot of things that Adobe Reader won't.

Be careful with older versions. Remote Code Execution bugs which are not getting patched can be quite risky. You ought to be on version 10 or later, or not using Reader at all.

That being said, you might enjoy your identity being stolen or your machine abused by ransomware/hooked into a botnet.

Standard disclaimer applies against virtualized or standalone environments, hardened operating system configurations and other pro-active countermeasures.

Are you sure? Read the release notes. Adobe may have a link to a download location on their site, but they are not saying it is still patched. Software is provided on an 'as-is' basis, and confers no rights etc etc...

I think they are keeping 9.5 on there because it's the only one that works with MS W2K SP4.

They are not battle maps , but color reprints of most of the maps in the AP.

Wanting to pick up the Map Folio, as it is out of print I've purchased the PDF. I went to an office print store to print it out to scale (1-inch squares) and they said they couldn't because the product was copyrighted.

My question is, If I have purchased the product in the only available format, digital format, do I still need express permission to print it, or just for them to print it in the size I am asking?

Per the FAQ, you are allowed to have your PDF professionally printed for personal use—please show that FAQ to your print shop.

I looked it it on a tablet which I could borrow for a few moments from a person who bought the folio. Unfortunately I only had time to look at a few pages, but at least for one of the "battle maps" I tried to guesstimate the scale and it ended up looking as if (considering one would print it out) a field that "should" be one inch is about 1/8 of an inch in the folio.

My questions would be:

- Did anyone ever try cut&pasting + upscaling it on the computer and printing it over multiple pages in order to get actually usable "battle mats" out of it for the dungeons? (THAT would actually have been a reason for me to get a physical copy of this thing if the scale had been right.)
- If yes: Is the resolution sufficient for doing this or does it look somewhat crappy?
- Would this even be legal? (As long as it's personal use I can't imagine why not, but I don't know what kind of restrictions are applied to the PDFs.)

Feel free to do that for personal use, but the maps were not designed to be minis-scale battle mats, so I can't vouch for the image quality at that size.

Also, if you're using the Anniversary Edition of Rise of the Runelords—or frankly, even if you're not—you might find this product more satisfying. While it is also not designed for use as minis-scale battle mats, it includes many more maps, including some that updated some of the maps in this set.

I do this all the time. As has been said, they are not designed at that resolution. They get somewhat pixelated and fuzzy, but my group still prefers this to hand drawn maps as you can generally make out the details and get a richer view of the room you're in.

I only do it for certain key encounters where the room is awkward to draw, or the features are interesting, or it seems like an momentous, pivotal encounter in the AP.

Thanks Vic! Indeed the Interactive Maps seem to be better. I didn't know they exist ... must have overlooked them. :) The option to hide stuff seems nice. I'll check them out.

@Tom: Thanks! I suspected they would be somewhat pixelated, but my group as well will probably prefer them over hand drawn maps ... especially for those awkward to draw, as you've said. :)

I realize this is ten months late, but I use the Interactive Maps scaled up for minis and they look fine. They're not as high quality as the flip-maps, but definitely usable. I print them on a plotter, enlarged anywhere from 170-315% as a single sheet. Here's a photo of one in action. For some maps I edit them in GIMP to remove things like secret doors that I don't want the characters to see right away, if the option isn't available in the interactive PDF.
