The Winter issue of Kobold Quarterly is bigger and better than last time, at 60 pages, and it features stunning cover art by Cris Griffin.

With all that extra room, there are a lot more articles as well, including:
  • an interview with Ed Greenwood that covers novels, sex, and gaming
  • "The Ecology of the Lich" by Richard Pett
  • "Hardboiled Adventure" by Keith Baker
  • "Star & Shadow Magic" by Wolfgang Baur
  • "Arbeyach, the Prince of Swarms," by Ari Marmell

There are also articles on cinematic action, ancestral spirits for sorcerers, rules advice from Skip Williams, how to optimize your power attack, cartoons, a peek at the flying cities of the Arabian realms, and more.

Erik Mona calls KQ “the spiritual successor to Dragon Magazine” for good reason: we’re offering gamers the goods!

Fun Reading with Excellent Variety

5/5

This magazine has interesting and fun reading with a variety of types of articles.

The printed version is sturdy and holds up well.

You will not be disappointed.

My only request for improvement is to for it to be published every other month instead of quarterly -- it's a long wait between issues!

Recommended

4/5

The mag's quality continues to evolve. Some solid treatments of the lich, a fascinating new school of magic and an unusual devil round out this issue. The remaining articles vary in quality but most will still provoke some thought and ideas for your game. Recommended.

I've been trying to figure out what this open design stuff is since yesterday with two or three half hearted attempts... care to explain to those like me that can't find the right webpage to read or just too lazy? :)

It's a little confusing. They're working on a FAQ but it's not ready yet.

Basically, Wolfgang announces a concept for a supplement in his own campaign setting (which is also intended to be easily portable to any campaign setting). People send money to become patrons. Then once enough people sign up, he goes to work with other collaborators.

They have a members only LiveJournal, where Patrons can get insights to the work in progress and give input to what they'd like to see. Then they mail it out to the Patrons, and it ceases to be available (subject to whatever terms are established at the beginning of the project).

But you do have input while he creates it.

This is what I understand to be true from the perspective of a non-patron who is considering becoming a patron tonight.

It's too late to give input on the Arabian Nights project, but acting now keeps it from not being available to you any longer.

If I got this wrong, I did the best I could from what I could figure out from being on the outside too.

Nope, you're pretty spot on Watcher.

Awww.. You're not trying.

Think of it as commissioning artwork, only instead of artwork, it's a DnD Adventure book.

Now most of us can't afford to say, "Wolfgang, write me an adventure about Rocking Horse People and Newspaper Taxi's."

Mr. B charges about $3000.00 for such a thing. (Actually in the case of Rocking Horse People and Newspaper Taxis, there may be additional fees, I don't know.)

So... He says to the public, "I shall make a book about Arabian Nights like adventures. Everyone kick in some money, and collectively we'll hash out what's in the book. When I'm done, everyone that chipped in will have an exclusive adventure product that you can't buy anywhere else. Plus, you'll have some say in terms of what goes in it."

If you don' get that, I give up.

Six Arabian Nights A set of six linked mini-adventures, each suitable for one night of play in Dark Arabia, a land of scimitars against the darkness. The project is funded and underway; new patrons are welcome on the understanding that some of the work is already ongoing."
But still no mention of how to get in on this (pretty much just interested in buying a copy).
All the details are on the Arabian Nights page, from descriptions to price to authors to... Well, that's about it. The project ships in the next two weeks, so if you don't care about the design discussions, playtest, etc, now's the perfect time to jump in.

Aha! Don't know why I didn't think of looking for your personal homepage instead of just the LiveJournal page.

Anyhoo, I've now donated to the project! Yay me! ;-)
Do those of us who are "late donors" still get access to all the background discussion (even though we can't affect any of it, of course)?

EDIT: Ohhh, found the "How to Design for Fantasy RPGs" preorder and snagged me one of those too!

Yep, you'll get an email about access to the background discussion shortly, if you don't have it already. That includes a set of design essays on various adventure-design-related topics.

Thanks for signing up!

Am i reading this right? Newsstand now available? I'll have to let the Guardtower know.

The Guardtower?!?!?! Oh my gods it's been years since I thought of that place (I used to live in Columbus in the 90's) nice to know it's still around.

It still stands. They opened up the windows towards the front so there is more natural light coming. It fluctuates between good "cat pee" days and bad "cat pee" days.

Haven't stopped by in about a month myself. But it is still recognizable as the store you were familiar with.

You are a smidge behind production quality...

Sorry.

I meant to post this a couple of weeks ago, but kept getting distracted.

You (Wolfgang Baur) have officially caught up to Paizo's production quality with KQ3. There is no mistaking it when you hold KQ3 in your hands.

I hope this is a sign that KQ is doing well.

Got my first Issue of my subscribtion Friday, and I must admit I am impressed. It is most definitely a worthy successor to Dragon Magazine. I hope someday it's able to go Monthly.

Now I just have to figure out how to get my pdf download and wait for the dice to arrive as well, as one of the options for subscribing was "Print + PDF + 7 Dice" for $36....well needless to say I went for that one.

I was on the verge of subscribing - $27.95 for 4 issues (+ .pdfs). But for I sign on the dotted line:

1. Does that start with No. 3?

2. Also, $8 shipping and handling? Is that per magazine or for all 4?

Yep, that starts with issue number 3. We're a quarterly, and it just makes no sense to make people wait for their subscription to start with the next one.

The S+H is for all 4 issues. So, total comes to $35.99 in the US for the PDF and the print combined subscription.

#3 was my first issue and I have to admit, I had my doubts before I sprang for my subscription, but I was jonesing for my gaming mag fix pretty bad after the demise of Dragon. I am SO glad that I subscribed. How often have we long time gamers heard someone complain about not being able to recapture the magic we felt when gaming was new for us? For the first time in a long time, maybe ever, I felt that spark again as I read through the first issue of KQ I received. I felt like I had stepped back in time to the early 80s and was reading one of the old issues of Dragon. It's so nice not to have to sift through all the commercialism and pre-packaged campaign settings and just be able to enjoy the magazine. Thank you for putting out such a great product.

Ummm. My bookmarks don't work. Help?

Dark Archive

Well I'll try my luck here and see if Mr. Baur sees this. I was perusing KQ 3 and noticed that the Arbeyach article is designated OGL. Specifically is the Spawn of Arbeyach monster OGL? I was wondering as it would fit very well for a submission I'm putting together for the Pathfinder Society Scenarios

Also, you can stop by the forums (tab at the top) on the KQ site and ask your questions. Plenty of contributors are there to answer questions as well as Wolfgang. Come visit!

What type of angel is that on the cover?

Anyone?

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

I hope this isn't too disappointing, but I'm not sure if it was supposed to be any particular type of angel. Perhaps just an angel.

I know the cover art was done by Cris Griffin. The "On the Cover" text says, "Cris Griffin gives us a flying beauty. Sure, we've got a weakness for redheads, but that sword looks....dangerous. Just the way we like our angels."

The funny thing it looks alot like the description of the Celestar from the "You Make the Monster" thread in Necromancer Games's forums.
