Thanks for the info guys. That is a subtle hint at what the writers of RAW intended. Tharg The Pirate King wrote: basically what you have been doing is similar to 2edition exp which took much longer to level. It never reset but it accumilated at a very slow rate. It took longer to level which I feel made the game more fun, because you were more engaged with the game itself and not the levels. You will never find a rule because the books declare that any rule in them is void depending on what the GM wants. It all comes down to the last line I bolded. if the group likes it and does not complain then stick to what you have been doing. Kind of interesting, seeing as I started playing with AD&D 2nd ed. lol! That statment brought back some good memories. Anywho, again I thank you all for the help. I will give this a shot with my players and see what they like.
Thanks for the help guys! I really appreciate such speedy feedback. I do have one final request though, could you please give me a reference from the core rulebook? Not that I disbelieve the last 9 posts, but it would be good to show my players. I've never been able to find it, even in the old materials. I think I'll switch for our new campaign to see how it works. I've always told my players they should focus on their character and that the game isn't about "I got the next level!" it's about the experience. After all "The play's the thing", right? EDIT: Also wanted to mention that it can take over a year (sometimes two) for my PCs to reach the 20th level. I hand out xp slow and make them wait to level. It's always made my groups be very careful with their characters. Giving a true consequence if they die at level 10.
Ok, I've been playing this game for 10 years now and I encountered something I've never thought about. Most of my gaming career has been GMing, rather than playing. My question is thusly: When a PC gains a level, do their experience points reset to 0 or do they cumulate? I have always had players exp reset to 0 upon gaining a new level. It made making a new level a big deal. But recently someone told me I was doing it wrong but I can't find it in RAW or anywhere on the interwebs. Help is appreciated. Thanks all.

Yelling as loudly as his lungs will allow Koridur exclaims "I say we jump!" He points to the shaft with the blood. "If there's something down there, it'll be no match for us! After all, there's a number of us and probably only one of them! These shafts were meant to be traveled!" Famous last word: Probably

Val:
Are we still above the main chamber? If so we need to find a way to get down that input for the main chmber. Koridur shouts as loudly as his dwarven lungs will allow "Be on your guard!!!" Waving his hands frantically to get everyone's attention he again shouts "Strong evil may be here!" Koridur draws his new blade, ready for an attack from anywhere. I'm looking for a way to disable these loud machines and get down that chute to the main chamber: PERCEPTION: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20 +2 to notice unusual stonework. KNOWLEDGE ENGINEERING: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12 KNOWLEDGE DUNGEONEERING: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Koridur follows closely behind Gloisil. Ready at all times for an attack. He thinks to himself "We must find this box... and fast. The goblins above can't be held off for long. They'll be swarming this place in a matter of days." His attention is easily diverted to any quick motions or odd sounds. Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 (That's +2 more to notice any unusual stonework) The loud noises coming from the machinery would easily drown out any other sounds from possible enemies... and that makes him very uncomfortable.
M Halfling Rogue
Koridur takes his bowl and thanks Gloisil promptly. Eating with distant eyes he thinks back on the days events. He thinks about this new magic blade and what effects it could possibly have. Could it hurt him? Could it make him hurt his friends? He didn't know the answers to all those questions but one thing he does know; if he doesn't use it, his new found friends could be in peril. He shakes his head at the thought of anyone getting hurt and remembers his duty in the shield wall. Valegrim:
Is there anything I should know about this magic weapon? It's 1d?, any bonuses, penalties, etc? Thanks. "I'll take any watch no one else wants. Let me know what I can do to help."

Koridur grabs at the tendril hoping to free Kurg. "KURG! LET HIM GO FOUL BEAST! Melee touch attack to start grapple: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Man, I think I can get him but Not sure if I can keep him... Also, perception check. We'll see what we can see here. SPOT: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 1 + 2 = 20

Koridur steps with all the stability his stubby legs can muster. As he treads through the debris he can only think of the desecrated anvil. He will get his revenge. He can feel a bead of sweat begin to roll down his temple under his helmet as they continue their descent. Koridur keeps an eye out for anything suspicious on the way down. SPOT 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
The group I DM is very much into role play. It's the essence of the game to us. To escape RL for a bit and be someone heroic. Someone your not. If only for a moment you can be the hero charging into the tower to save the damsel in distress. To hear the DM explain the situation is so much of the game. How you can feel the chill in your spine as you stare down the nose of a red dragon and can feel the heat of it's breath or can feel the damp air flowing in from a break in the dungeon ceiling. The world, the story, the life of the game is everything. Combat is always secondary to my group, but that's just our style.

To Sunset: "I can see pretty well in the dark." (Up to 60 ft in total darkness.) To Gloisil: "I'm sorry, I don't know what the water would be, however I do know this area is made to push air down to a few chambers. This grease is pretty nasty. It looks like it'd be put here." Koridur points toward the point in the gear where the grease would go. "Maybe if we use a little we can quiet these pistons a bit."

Alright. I'll go ahead and roll to see what I can see for the ring. If he didn't want the gobbies to get it *that* bad it's gotta have some purpose. LORE: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 o_O Not near as nice as the last roll. While I'm at it, I'll give this room a look over as well. SEARCH: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

With a forced smile, Koridur takes the journal from Sunset and puts it in his belt. "Thanks, lass" are the only words he speaks, fearing to show too much weakness with a choked voice. After a moment to regain his composure he looks again toward Mox. "Nothing is wrong with...the dwarf...my friend. But I do need to know everything you know about this. Be absolutely certain you are leaving out no small detail." After the conversation concludes, Koridur walks to the hallway. I'll look around the room a bit on my way out to see if there's anything I didn't notice before. SEARCH: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23 O_O ...BA-BAM!

Koridur stares at the anvil with great distress on his face and fire in his eyes. A small tear begins to roll down his cheek. I'll be wrighting down those clan names in my book of grudges. He turns to Sunset and Gyldyr. "I'll be havin' a look at the journal first." The dwarf motions to take the journal from the last holder. "Mox. What do you know of this massacre?" The dwarf hoists his axe and readies his shield. "I will *not* let my brothers die in vain. Let's find the seal and be done with this."

Sunset wrote: "Um, here Gloisil? Koridur? Where do that lifty thing actually go?" Sunset asks as she tilts her head....looking off into the distant darkness. "I dun' know Sunset. It just kept goin' up. I'm not sure if it had a destination." Koridur follows Gloisil into the room. "We need to move. As long as my team is still up there fightin', that means the goblins are up there with 'em. We were heavily out numbered. If the goblins win too quickly, they'll all be right back down here with us.
M Halfling Rogue
"Alright. I say we head to the workshop there."(room 2)"That's probably got a shaft or two for the engineers to get the lower levels quickly if need be." Koridur heads towards the door. "Has anyone checked this area for traps? I wouldn't be surprised to find any with all the gnome work here."

Doug Greer wrote: "Koridur, if you would like to lead, I would feel more comfortable. Although in the heat of battle, I sometimes foolishly jump into the front lines, I am not really suited to being in front." "Very well then, I'll be up front in case we're attacked." Koridur steps up to the front of the party and to no one in particular states "Now, where do we go?"

Gloisil Murigel wrote: "Koridur, would these shafts or vents be covered by something like a grate, or are they just open holes in floors and/or walls? "It depends on those who built it, honestly. However, I should assume they're hidden in the walls so nobody would fall in. They're not traps and you certainly don't want any sneaks or the like fallin in 'em and gettin to the king's chamber or grand hall in no time." A large grin spreads across Koridurs face. "Though like I said, it all depends on where they would have decided to build 'em. I'm keepin a look out for 'em as we walk but I dinnae where they would be."

Koridur starts to follow Gloisil. "Well..." He starts. "I don't know if that lift can be fixed or not. However, I do know that there will most likely be slides or other ways that will drop far down below our current level. We're actually pretty high up in the mountain. We need to get lower. If you happen to see a vent or shaft that looks odd or out of place let me know and I'll check it out, it could be our ticket down. The dwarf thinks hard for a minute and to no one in particular states "All right. If we're to find this seal, we need to find a golden box that it's hidden in. My best guess is that it's in the clergy chambers on the second level. We need to find the bottom floor where we'll find an abundance of smithing equipment then go two floors up from there. Seeing as this is a volcanic mountain range there should be some vents to let the magma layers come up on the bottom floor as well." Koridur glances around for a minute. "On that second floor we'll see spokes that hold the entrances to each of the tunnels to the clergyman's areas. I believe the seal would be somewhere in their chambers. However, I could be wrong." Valegrim: How far underground are we? Which direction are we facing? Is there any unusual stonework in the area? Here's a knowledge roll if you need one: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Noticing all the whispering back and forth, Koridur takes a couple of steps back towards his original companions. "Your language is just fine, lass. But why all the secrets? Your not planning to attack us are you? That wouldn't be very smart of you now, would it?" The old dwarf says in a chiding manner. SENSE MOTIVE (Sunset): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 Also, not trying to metagame. I assume Koridur notices them whispering as they've not made any attempts or rolls to hide it. If I can't or have no reason to know they're speaking secretively to each other, than I retract this post and humbly apologize.

The dwarfs old face wrinkles into a smile "Well my lady, first may I have the pleasure of knowing your name? After Desidera's response the dwarf states "I'm a soldier in the shield wall of the battalion sent here by High Preist Kosan. We were fighting the goblins above ground when we were vastly outnumbered. Kurg and I fell through a sink hole with one of the goblins and continued fighting him there. After his defeat we used a lift just down the hall from us. This same lift which you witnessed us fall from just a moment ago." The dwarf stares innocently at Desidera. "Thank you kindly young maiden. For healing my wounds 'n all." He winces from various small pains as Desidera applies the bandages.
