I'm actually going back to Savage Worlds. Over the 30+ years of roleplaying, this is really the only system that hit the spot for me. I love how all it takes is one shot from a gun to take an opponent down. It gives me the verisimilitude I need to satisfy my brain.
I was quite happy with Savage Worlds, but then got caught up in the Starfinder 2E excitement forgetting all the things I didn't like about d20 systems when it comes to modern technology... thinking I could fix them for my home games. But deep down I knew better, it just took me a while to except it, so now it's going to be Savage Starfinder.
I will still purchase the Starfinder 2E PDFs as I love the imagination and content they provide and I'll convert these over to Savage Worlds. Also hoping that Pinnacle manage to snag a license to Starfinder 1E, like they did for Pathfinder, and do all the work for me.

Thurston Hillman wrote: The team did discuss the obvious "but guns should just be better than old weapons, right?" discourse, and we decided that it would be better for the game to break a bit of verisimilitude to have guns in Starfinder have parity with PF2 style archaic weapons, to make sure groups could better blend an work together, rather than just having one game "be better" / "have bigger numbers. Must be just me, but I just can't get my brain to accept that a team of archaic armed individuals will have the same damage potential as a team armed with modern weapons versus unarmored creatures.
Glad to hear that there will be some optional rules that provide more drawbacks for archaic equipment.
All this has got me thinking and I might also add another house rule in my games where modern weapons and explosives deal double damage versus unarmored creatures. So on a critical they would do four times the listed damage.
But too early for that yet... I still need to see the Starfinder 2E rules before I start modifying them ;-)

Most important, purchasing a book shows Paizo leadership that there's community support for the game.
Totally excited that SF2E is happening! Pre-ordered and counting down the months until it comes out.
The collector in me wishes I could get this in a hardback, even a special edition.

Well today's blog says "It’s November 15th, and that means that Player Core and GM Core are now officially out!"
Well not for me, as I'm a subscriber.
Sadly I will wait... just wish someone from Paizo would let me know how long that wait will be.

As Aaron asked, I have now passed on the extra details from my post above to customer service. Hopefully this helps the Art and Web Store teams to better understand how I use a PDF and why I would like the image quality improved in this PDF.

Please continue to communicate to Customer Service so they can show our Art and Web Store teams. I agree that quality control is important, but I can neither see it nor change it. When I reached out to support, they responded with: "At this time our art team is aware of this PDF image quality issue and that the compression in the zip file and file size it's self are what is mainly causing this and are actively working to get that pdf looking better for everyone in the future."
Customer support have agreed there is an issue and that it will be fixed.
I disagree with your statement that the quality looks good but I think that all depends on how the PDF is used. So let me clarify how I use it to help get my point of view across.
The jpg distortions are most evident at the top of page 8. Zoom in to screen width as I do to have a good look at the inner/outer planes diagram. Distortions are everywhere where there is a boundary of one color to another. Now scroll up and look at the Pathfinder logo, also distorted.
I did the above on a 27" monitor where it is most evident. You could argue that isn't how people normally consume the PDF. But when it comes to trying to have a good look at a diagram, it's what I do all the time. At this scale, I would expect to see some minor jpg artifacts, that is the side-effect of jpg compression, but not the amount I am seeing. Now if you zoom back out to full page view, you will still see the distortions now that you know what to look for. My brain automatically draws my attention to these, so it really bugs me.
Now when I normally read PDFs on my 10" tablet I do that in landscape orientation. Same page and image and I can clearly see jpg artifacts. At this scale I would not expect to see any. Other Paizo PDFs are fine.
While the physical book sits on my shelf for occasional browsing, it's the PDF I mostly use for my gaming and it's important to me. Having lovely colorful art I can appreciate makes that experience so much better.

I really like the idea of "1 square = 30 feet" but could you make that "1 hex = 30 feet" instead.
For me, hexes lend themselves to better represent elevation changes. Something that the BattleTech maps tend to do well. I would love to see this element introduced in longer ranged Starfinder battles.
Ah, fatal damage dice. I was worried when I didn't see this appear in the Field Test. I believe it's a great mechanic in that it only raises the average damage by a little while making guns feel deadly. I wouldn't mind it being increase a bit more for modern weapons... maybe 2d12 instead of 1d12?
Love the blog, keep it up please!

Just wanted to share the response from Customer Service regarding the PDF image quality in RoE. Good news is that they are working on a fix!
Thanks for writing in about this issue! At this time our art team is aware of this PDF image quality issue and that the compression in the zip file and file size it's self are what is mainly causing this and are actively working to get that pdf looking better for everyone in the future. We ask for your patience while that file is addressed as most departments are still getting back from gen-con atm thanks for your time and patience in this manner.

ORC in space... Wow! Super excited for a Starfinder 2E, especially one compatible with Pathfinder 2E. Ever since 2E came out I have been hoping for this. Being able to easily interchange classes, items, creatures, spells, etc, between Pathfinder and Starfinder is a big win for me. It just gives me more options when I'm doing the whole home brew setting thing.
I've only had a quick skim over the Starfinder Field Test, but I already love how the glitching condition expands upon the existing conditions in Pathfinder.
I'm looking forward to the playtest next August. Seems so far away, but then again I will have plenty to do with the Pathfinder remaster coming out in November. Thank you Paizo for Starfinder 2E.

Hey Aaron - are you able to inquire as to why the Rage of Elements PDF has low resolution images? It looks quite pixelated, very obvious on the front cover for example. (Reposting via the correct account.) Hello, we are aware of the issue. It was a very large file. This is the export quality required to create a reasonable file download size. The Art team is working on a happy medium, but we don't know if that is possible at this time. It's a shame, care was taken to create such a beautiful book and it is let down by image quality in the PDF. When I look at it on my tablet in landscape mode, the planes diagram at the top of page 8 has clear jpg distortions.
With jpgs, it's always a compromise, you can twiddle with both the resolution and the compression value. The trick is to get it to a point where it looks good when normally viewed.
Otherwise it may just be easier to offer a low and high quality version and let customers pick which one they want. The way I would do it if I was Paizo is to produce the high quality version and then run it through a PDF compression utility to produce the low quality version. It's an extra step in the process, but to me, well worth it, especially considering the amount of effort put into creating the book.
In the end I just want to appreciate the beauty of this book. So if it comes down to a choice, then my vote goes to the high quality one.

I recently came back to Pathfinder 2E after a 2 year hiatus with another RPG. That absence made be realize how much I missed the heroic role playing and story telling that Pathfinder 2E provides. I tried to replicate that feeling, but it just didn't scratch that itch for me. So, I'm back.
I just GM one game system at a time. A few years back that was Starfinder, and then Pathfinder 2E came out and spoiled me with the 3 action economy and the way criticals work (that whole roll 10 over the target). After that, I just couldn't go back to Starfinder and it was just Pathfinder 2E. Then another system caught my attention (no, not D&D) for a couple of years, and I left both. With all the excitement concerning ORC and the Remaster, I realized I missed Pathfinder 2E and have come back and currently enjoying it once again.
I love the Starfinder setting and wish that one day Starfinder gets the 2E treatment. I'm hoping that if it does, it then becomes fully compatible with Pathfinder 2E so I can easily intermix classes, spells, equipment, etc, between the two.
If that does happen, I'm hoping I can then GM both settings. Now that would be cool!

I would like subscriptions for the convenience. Currently, every month or so, I check for all the latest PDF releases for both Pathfinder and Starfinder and purchase them. It would be nice if this was automated through a subscription mechanism. If I received a loyalty discount for being PDF subscribed, even better, but it's not the reason I am asking for this.

I have raised this issue a few times, but never received a definitive answer and the problem persists. I'm hoping that by offering the following information it will help to get the problems resolved, or at least someone can inform me that this was a deliberate change with the Starfinder APs so I can stop trying to get it fixed.
The problems started to appear in Starfinder Adventure Path #25. Initially the PDFs were too large, but the images were fine. This continued until #30.
Beginning with #31, the size came back down, but all the images in the PDF are multi-part. What I mean by that is, if you try to copy an image so you can use it in a VTT, you will need to manually stitch the image together first as it is comprised of multiple images in the PDF.
None of the Pathfinder APs suffer from this issue, nor the latest Alien Archive 4. All Starfinder APs before #25 were also fine.
I can live with the large PDF size. Annoying, but at least the images inside are usable. I would really like the multi-part image issue fixed that plagues #31 to #36.
Here is a list that summarizes the Starfinder Adventure Path PDF issues with the first three for comparison sake:
[NORMAL PDF SIZES WITH GOOD IMAGES - For Comparison]
#22 - 23 MB
#23 - 21 MB
#24 - 23 MB
[LARGE PDF SIZES - Images are good]
#25 - 77 MB
#26 - 75 MB
#27 - 94 MB
#28 - 96 MB
#29 - 73 MB
#30 - 102 MB
[BAD MULTI-PART IMAGES]
#31 - 31 MB
#32 - 35 MB
#33 - 29 MB
#34 - 22 MB
#35 - 30 MB
#36 - 29 MB

I just purchased Starfinder AP #36 and the problem with the broken up images that has plagued all the Starfinder AP starting with #31 is still there.
Again, the latest Pathfinder AP #163 is fine and is actually slightly smaller in size even though it has 100 pages compared to 68.
I don't understand why there was a change to how the Starfinder PDFs were being generated when the old method was great.
I know I am starting to sound like a broken record, but I really would like it fixed so the PDFs are more useful to me.

Seems like this PDF is suffering from the same issue that is present in the Starfinder APs #31 to #35. Most of the images are comprised of multiple images... This is a known issue that can’t be fixed. It’s either a 150 MB file with selectable images or what we have, with selectable text. Given that this is a free supplement that will see a lot of downloads, we have opted to go with the smaller file size. Since none of these images is a map required to run the AP, you should be able to use the contents when building a character in a VTT just as you could an in-person game. I don't understand. All the Pathfinder PDFs are fine, small size selectable text and the images are in one piece. Same goes for all the Starfinder rulebooks and APs before #31. Actually looking at it, seems like something started happening at #25 where the average size jumped from 25MB to 75MB.
So, something changed in the process. But just for the Starfinder APs. Be it a PDF export setting or the image format.
Sorry about fussing over this, but I also like using the images, not just the maps, from the PDF. This change makes the PDF less useful to me.

So if an effect states "can’t use Breath Weapon again for 1d4 rounds" then I see that as it can't be used again for an interval of 6 seconds on a roll of 1.
So if that nasty dragon breaths on you in it's first turn (let's say it's 1:07:12 pm) and the GM rolls a 1, then the dragon gets to breath on you again on it's next turn (which will be 1:07:18 pm) as it has waited 1 round (6 seconds) before doing so.
Now if the effect stated "can’t use Breath Weapon again for 1d4 turns" then that would change things in my mind. I would read that as a turn needs to be skipped on a roll of 1. So in the above example the dragon would only get to breath again on it's third turn (1:07:24 pm).
problem is that litraly nothing in the game tracks like that.
even durations that last "rounds" always are counted on beginning or end of turns (depending if they are benefitial or hazardous)
Your approach of counting something in the middle of a turn (because that's what's happenning if you start counting 6 seconds from the middle of the turn) resembles 2nd edition adnd where spells, attack, and everything, had a variable initiative score you had to add to each action you took over your regular initiative roll. What I was trying to explain is how I visualize it.
The actual game mechanic is that if the dragon rolls a 1, then at the start of its next turn, reduce the count by 1 to 0 with the dragon being able to breath again during the turn.
In my mind it has waited 1 round (but not 1 turn).

Mainly due to the free PDF I get when you subscribe. If I now need to purchase the print and the PDF separately, I will most likely just pick up the PDF since I find that format most useful when it comes to adventure material.
Since the APs will be moving to a every two month schedule, couldn't these new adventures just slot in to the months that don't have a Starfinder AP?

There has been an update to #31, #32, #33 and #34. Now all are of a smaller size, but all the images are multi-part images. So, before being able to use an image you need to combine all its split images together.
Will this be fixed?

Going back a few months I posted The Weave - Pathfinder vs Mundane
The way I see it, the Pathfinder rules are all about creatures that have abilities that far surpass creatures on Earth (mundanes). Usually that is fine, but in my campaign setting these Pathfinder creatures will meet Earth creatures and I wanted to explain and highlight the differences.
I'm still slowly working on the rules, but I have finally come up with a name I'm happy with, Syn, a shortened version of "Ambient Life Force Synchronicity" which seems to fit better with the concept I'm aiming for.
So I have revised the original concept and thought I would share.
--------------------------------------------------
Syn
Unlike Earth, where most creatures are mundane, the rest of the multiverse thrives on magic. It permeates everywhere and every being. It makes the mundane impossible possible. It is the catalyst of miracles and legends. On mundane Earth, heroes exist, but their heroics are due to courage and tenacity rather than ability, which pales in comparison to magically attuned heroes.
Many fantasy stories in movies, anime and novels originating from Earth embellish heroes and creatures with amazing abilities. Most mundanes would just write these off as fiction, pure imagination, and they would be wrong. In the multiverse, many such heroes and creatures exist, and they represent the norm rather than the extraordinary. You are one of them. Either you have always been one, or you have become awakened after leading a mundane life.
In combat, you duck and weave, uncannily anticipating attacks using your combat honed senses. In other hazardous situations you instinctively maneuver and carry out split second actions to reduce the damage you receive. When you do become injured, you heal faster than a mundane. This can be associated to your magical attunement to the environment, to your surroundings and to your inner being through what is referred to as Ambient Life Force Synchronicity, more commonly known as Syn.
Syn is a mysterious magical life force that exists throughout the multiverse and allows you to subconsciously anticipate and be warned of events before they happen, a sixth sense. It also allows you to perform extraordinary actions. As you gain experience, your Syn increases. This is reflected in various characteristics such as attributes, Armor Class, Hit Points and level. Syn has many names, the Sight, Life Current, Aura, Force, Ki, Weave, or simply luck, amongst others that don't truly describe it, but no matter what it's called, it's the effect it has on your abilities that is important.
When you are hit, it is your Syn that subconsciously compels you to instinctively dodge, turning mortal wounds into grazes. When you fall a great height, Syn maneuvers you instinctively turning that bone shattering death into bruising. Hit Points do not just represent an abstraction of your physical wellbeing, they also represent the Syn that is available to you. Therefore, as you increase in level, the Hit Points you gain are mostly due to Syn. It also contributes to other characteristics such as an increase in your attributes, for example, allowing you to become stronger or faster, far surpassing what would normally be expected. While you are out there making the impossible possible, just remember, you are not alone, nearly all the creatures in this enormous multiverse rely on their Syn and in some cases their Syn will be far greater than yours.

In my mind it sort of makes sense from a company point of view as well. Pathfinder 2E products become more appealing to Starfinder 2E players and vice versa. Not just Bestiaries and Alien Archives, but also a book of spells that could be marketed as a resource for both Pathfinder and Starfinder. That way you expand the audience for each book which should translate to greater sales allowing Paizo to spend more money to create more books. Well, that's how I see it, but I expect Paizo has a better idea of their customer's wants and needs. For now, I can only wait and keep dreaming of a unified future.

Thank you Paizo for taking the risk, putting in the immense effort and heaping on a ton of passion in creating Pathfinder Second Edition. The three action economy and the way criticals work really win me over, but there is more I adore about these rules, elegance. I was looking up a zombie just the other day and reading this line "A zombie is permanently slowed 1 and can't use reactions". Wow, from those few words I have the rules and the concept to GM a slow moving zombie. That just really clicks with me as do most of the rules. Well done Paizo!

Steve Geddes wrote: thecursor wrote: I do not understand why this thread was necroed or why some people seem honestly to think that creating one Second Edition means we're going to get a new edition for every game system every year. Different people like different things.
For me, it’s too early for a second edition but three years for “SF Unchained” is too far away. I must be one of those different people. I'm seeing this from a different angle. I would personally like a consolidation of the Pathfinder and Starfinder rule systems so that most elements can be shared between the two with no need for conversion. Not just monsters but classes and everything in-between.
For me, the main reason is that the homebrew campaign setting I am currently working on is set in Earth's near future which I was initially basing upon the Starfinder ruleset. Then came Pathfinder 2E and it spoiled me with the changes it did with the 3 action economy and the way criticals work. Both of these fit in perfectly with my campaign setting. So, I have dropped the Starfinder ruleset and am now using Pathfinder 2E with bits borrowed from Starfinder.
So for purely selfish reasons I would love Starfinder 2E as long as it uses the same ruleset from Pathfinder 2E. Realistically, I would imagine Paizo are way too busy at the moment with Pathfinder 2E to have anything ready by Gencon 2020. Maybe by Gencon 2021, and at that stage it will be 4 years between Starfinder editions. I imagine that may be still too soon for some, but for me I wish it could be sooner.

Expect this to consume all of my time once it comes out. Pre-ordered and waiting. Not too long now...

As soon as we are ready to discuss subscriptions, I am sure we will broadcast it loudly from the rooftops. In the meantime, if you want a copy of Starfinder books, I would say to go ahead and preorder them. In the next few months before the launch at Gen Con, if there is a subscription that you wish to sign up for, the process to switch from preorder copy to subscription copy will be made as easy and painless as possible for you. I have pre-ordered everything Starfinder except the pawns (I'm holding out for Starfinder miniatures). Once the Starfinder subscription is available I will definitely switch to that, but for now I thought I would show my support for Starfinder, and appreciation and faith in the design team, by throwing some money at it.

What are some of the game mechanic changes due to the widespread use of guns? For example is it still all about HP, or has a vitality/wound point, or other, system replaced it? Are range modifiers still -2 per increment? How are burst fire and auto fire handled?
What types of vehicles will be in the core rulebook, mostly transport or will there be tanks, fighter jets, etc?
How is damage from large weapons handled, basically what happens when a vehicle mounted 100mm cannon hits a character?
Are we going to see goblins with guns?

Just watched the Taking20 interview and it seems that the AI machine god's name is 'Triune' (not sure about the spelling). Mentioned at 13:51, 16:12 and 16:27.

More seriously, I would like to see StarFinder adopt the sci-fi game convention of using metric for most measures. Except that there isn't one to any meaningful basis. Traveler used english units for the bulk of it's original incarnation. Star Fleet Battles just used hexes. But there isn't really a dominant space fantasy game out there. I agree that there isn't a dominant space fantasy game out there yet... hopefully Starfinder gets that crown.
Here are some futuristic RPGs I could think of that do use the metric system:
Alternity
Battletech: A Time of War
Shadowrun
Star Wars
Stars Without Number
Traveller, metric in all the current editions, and if my memory serves me well, I thought even the original black books were metric as well.
Warhammer 40k RPG
Shadowrun is probably the one that sticks out the most to me. Not quite space fantasy, but future fantasy, and to me would definitely feel out of place if it started talking feet, pounds and miles.

When I first heard of Starfinder, I honestly didn't know what to make of it. It did have me intrigued and after spending a bit of time reading all the information available I am now excited by the potential that Starfinder brings. Pathfinder has always been one of my favourite rule systems. I drifted away from it a few years back looking for something more modern day. Starfinder with its science fantasy focus seems to be exactly what I am after.
I believe Starfinder will be a success and it will help Pathfinder. The key is Pathfinder compatibility. The ability to borrow from Pathfinder, and with minimal conversion, be able to use that material in Starfinder is at the top of my please do list. As this has been stated as a priority design goal of Starfinder, I'm satisfied it will happen and eagerly await the release.
In the meantime I will be catching up to everything I missed in Pathfinder. So in a way Starfinder is already helping Pathfinder. It has ushered me back and has me buying and enjoying Pathfinder material once again.
