My prediction as to the identity of the new antagonist:
The Last Titan is Rhea/Cybele. All we know about the Last Titan at this point is that she's female. Assuming that she is, in fact, a Greek Titan, Rhea seems like the most likely candidate, being the one who was probably on the best terms with the Olympians, and though most of the Titanesses (and Oceanus) were not actually locked in Tartarus, she seems like the one most likely to be active today. Rhea, however, was not a particularly malevolent or violent deity, unless we consider the fact that she was often conflated with the cult of the Phrygian goddess Cybele, aka the Mad Mother. Cybele was a particularly unhinged and feared goddess in the ancient world with a particular fondness for genital mutilation, a figure far better suited to being a villain. Since the series plays around so much with aspects, I can imagine that they may in fact be one and the same.
The Arthropoids in Mortasheen are based on The Fly, but with a wide variety of different types of bugs. I'm surprised it took me months to realize that.
I'm interested in the new Couatls and whether or not they'll be from mythology. There are quite a few types of Aztec serpent monsters with Couatl in their name, but most of them aren't particularly Celestial-ish.
I was curious and looked it up, and with a name like that I was definitely not expecting a Christian band of any sort. But the lyrics are pretty standard Christian rock fare.
I'm not big on Christian rock. I didn't even realize that was what it was until I looked it up separate from the AMV. Maybe it's pretty standard for that, I don't really know.
Yeah, it's not my genre either. But yeah, it's nothing I haven't heard from the snippets of that genre I've stumbled over through the years. It's actually pretty tame compared to some.
Having been raised in the faith, it actually took me a few minutes to find what someone might get offended by in the song. I hear similar statements made on a near daily basis here.
It's largely the ignorant science denial via irritating strawman arguments (I didn't come from a monkey) that annoyed me, and a couple of other things I won't get into here because of the ban on political debate. A big part of it was that I went into it thinking it was just a normal metal song about rising up against generic evil or something, I would have ignored it completely if I knew what it was.

I listen to a lot of metal with really dark lyrics. Usually, I just operate under the assumption that the singer/writer is deliberately and consciously playing a villain and that the lyrics are just evil for the sake of being menacing/badass, and aren't actively encouraging such behavior in the real world.
That being said, B~!+% Came Back by Theory of a Deadman. It has such a cool sounding rhythm to it, and the instrumental elements are great, but the actual lyrics are so misogynistic that they make my skin crawl. I can't honestly tell if they're meant to reflect the artist's actual views or not, but if so, yuck.
Also, I recently came across a song called I Stand by We As Human. I first heard it in an AMV and thought it sounded epic, but couldn't make out the lyrics very well. I eventually looked up the lyrics and to say that they had an awful, and downright idiotic, message would be an understatement.
The American double standard that we always help they physically injured but scorn the mentally ill as weak.
I came across this recently when looking at a Down the Rabbit Hole YouTube video about Christian W Chandler (popularly, "CWC") the source of the meme Sonichu.
It was... disgusting.
Let me be clear: the Down the Rabbit Hole video was very worthwhile and the creator did solid work. The people other than CWC who were involved in that, though? Horrible. Like, actually reprehensible.
CWC was clearly a mentally ill person with no cognitive capacity to defend himself from the, frankly, predatory actions of people caught up in what amounts to social torture. He held some rather reprehensible views and was clearly socially unpleasant, but he was also a polite and relatively mild-mannered individual who put forth no real focus on any darker elements. And they turned him into a raging paranoid monster, fueling his worst beliefs and character elements while tearing down any ability he might have had to reform by repeatedly abusing his trust and lying to him. Again, these people turned him into a (relative) monster.
And the worst part? People defending the trolls that did it in the comments below by citing (variants of), "If he can't learn, he clearly deserves it."
I just... no.
Yes. Thank you, Tacticslion, for putting that into words. What the trolls did to that poor guy was horrid, and ceaseless. As for his reprehensible views and social ineptitude, it seems to me that he was one of those rare individuals who truly lacked the cognitive capacity to fix those problems. That's not something I would say about 99% of misogynists and homophobes on the internet, but in his case, I think it's sadly the truth. They took an extremely vulnerable individual and consciously, calculatedly, tormented him in order to make his situation go from bad to abominable and turn him into a (like you said, relative) monster. Internet trolls like that are proof you can be Chaotic Evil without ever actually breaking the laws of the land.
Is the Oni Daimyo Muronna by any chance missing a face? It doesn't say that specifically in the Book of the Damned, but her obedience and boons all have to do with blindness and her name sounds a lot like the faceless yokai Mu-Onna.
This is kind of a random question, but when you worked on the Monster Manual 3 for WotC, was the Runehound one of your creations? It just seems like the kind of monster you would whip up.
The following is an index of (mostly) mythological and folkloric creatures I've gathered together for the purpose of a worldbuilding project. What started out as me asking "wouldn't it be cool if I used some lesser known mythical creatures?" ended up becoming a colossal rabbit hole I've never been able to find my way out of. It is organized by region. I will note that some of the sources I used are far better than others, so I wouldn't suggest using this index for serious academia. There are a few "Fakelore" creatures that made it in, as including them was fine with the setting I was building, but might not be viable for your purposes. I do have sources and notes on all of them, so if you have questions, ask away. There are nearly 5,500 creatures in the index, and this was honestly me being selective.

A Bishonen is a male character that could best be described as a prettyboy, usually in the context of an anime. Usually young, slender, and handsome to the point of being seen (to Westerners at least) as somewhat feminine-looking. So, basically every male anime protagonist ever. Sephiroth from Final Fantasy is probably the ultimate example. Most male elves probably count. A "Bifauxnen" is a female character who presents herself in a stereotypically masculine-enough way (masculine clothes, short hair, etc.) that she could, at first glance, be mistaken for a Bishonen. To put it in western terms, a very pretty butch girl. This is also primarily an anime trope. It seems as though not everyone on here spends as much time aimlessly browsing TVTropes as I do.
That the Bifauxnen trope on TVTropes is a play on Faux Bishonen. Egregiously obvious, but I spent months wondering why it was called that before I figured it out.
Here's one: The treatment of cryptids in fantasy media as somehow not being "real" mythical creatures. D&D rarely ever features them, except for yetis, and in D20 Modern. There's really nothing stopping most of them from appearing in sword and sorcery era stuff though. The Sasquatch is not a modern entity. Folklore about it and similar creatures abound in world mythology going back thousands of years. And if we're talking European mythology specifically for faux-European settings, ever heard of a Woodwose? I know things like the Chupacabra, Jersey Devil and Mothman are more modern, but there's nothing about those creatures that specifically precludes them from having been around in pre-industrial times and settings. They have surprisingly little presence at all in D&D despite how long it's been around and how iconic they are. And don't get me started on Supernatural's claim that Sasquatch is just a guy in a suit in that universe. Sure, Bloody Mary and the Hookman exist, but Sasquatch? Not enough of a folkloric basis, apparently.
Well, at least we've got Pathfinder and the Dresden Files embracing them.
When fictional settings use the wrong names for mythical creatures. (That's not a Wyvern, WoW. That's a Chimera and you know it. You're just trying to be contrary.)
When fantasy settings make up their own names for creatures that are clearly carbon copies of entities from mythology. (Though in settings that have very little mythical basis it's okay. But it's things like Griffin, Hydra, Troll, Tauren, that annoy me. Why not just call a Minotaur a Minotaur?)
Having a physical body that requires sleep and sustenance.
The many, many, bizarre and seemingly random sensory issues that coincide with my Asperger's syndrome, and how difficult they are to explain and justify to other people.
The conflation of distinct mythical creatures, particularly if they originate in different cultures.
People who use the lack of objective morality to justify unethical behavior.
The "Everyone Hates Hades" trope.
Having to explain to people that the Transformers I'm a fan of and collect are totally distinct from the Michael Bay movies and come from a far higher quality collective of stories and lore.
The lack of available info on African mythical beasties.
I do like Supernatural, but their treatment of non-Abrahamic mythical creatures/figures, particularly divinities, really annoys me.
Reviewers who nitpick perfectly decent media.
Media that assumes that only one female body type is attractive, particularly media with an abundance of female characters that takes that approach. This isn't even a representation thing, though representation's definitely important. Honestly, diversity is just aesthetically pleasing. Works where all the girls look exactly the same except for hair, costume and maybe skin tone are just boring.
This is awesome. I'd given up hoping a while back that the neutral Outsiders would get the same treatment as the fiends and celestials, so I'm very pleasantly surprised to see this, filling what I'd viewed as a major gap in the cosmological lore. I can't wait to read about all the demigods and quasi-deities!
The Bolla is from Albanian mythology. In the myth it's the juvenile form of the much more powerful Kulshedra. Wikipedia actually has a fair amount of info about it: Bolla
Thanks! Those all sound super interesting. Say what you will about Fiends being overpopulated, they do have so of the coolest and most unique creature designs fairly consistently. Are the Siktempora a new category of Outsider? One that embodies various emotions or something?
Anya's death was pretty rough too. I was pretty upset as it really felt like an "obligatory" last episode major character death that didn't have enough in-story consequences to be justified. At least Tara's affected the plot in a major way.
Of all the character deaths I've encountered in the last few years, I think the one that shook me up the most was Tara in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and there's a very specific reason for that.
Buffy, for those of us that don't know, is a fairly typical urban fantasy, monster hunting show in the sense that it consists of a small group of heroes in a version of the real world, fighting monsters and demons, with a lot of formidable supernatural villains and apocalyptic threats. It's when it killed off Tara while breaking genre convention that I got the most upset.
What happened was, this mundane human s!#~head ended up developing a grudge against Buffy and decided to go after her with a gun, rather than the usual fantasy-related means of assassination. He went to her house, shot her (she was fine), and then took a second shot, with the bullet ricocheting away and hitting Tara, killing her. The thing that made it so rough to me is honestly how pointlessly mundane a death it was. It's a fantasy show. You expect people to be killed by monsters and to die valiantly in battle against apocalyptic threats. This was just such a pointless thing, having her be killed by some random loser with a gun in such a mundane way. If it had been a monster or an archvillain that killed her, it would have been sad, since I liked her, but wouldn't have had the same effect.
Too many to count. Raven from Teen Titans and Blackarachnia from Beast Wars are two of my earliest ones. Rachnera from the anime Monster Musume, Midna from Legends of Zelda, Asajj Ventress from Star Wars, all four of Lotor's female generals in Voltron, and Demona from Gargoyles were big ones over the last few years. I'm a big Harley/Ivy shipper, though that's more a ship than a crush. I also have a ton of crushes on mythical figures. Lilith, Hekate, Kali, Bastet, the Morrigan, I could go on. So yeah, I have a ton, and a lot of them are pretty damn weird to be totally honest.
I and a friend of mine have created a forum dedicated to creatures of mythology and folklore, world-building, creature design and collection/sharing of such creatures.
Monsters and Beasts Forum.
I'm a bit disappointed that the Nirvana Dragon mentioned in the old Great Beyond book seems to not be a thing anymore.
It's still a thing. Mr. Jacobs confirmed that we are indeed going to be receiving four more Planar Dragons in the APs, including the Edict Dragon of Axis, which has already been released. An NG dragon of Nirvana is almost certainly going to be one of them.
Sorry to double post, but I'm really curious now; the Wisagatcak is apparently named after a Cree culture hero and manitou similar to Nanabozho. What is it like as a monster and Lawful Evil? I'm honestly uncertain how I would go about interpreting a figure like that.
Forgive me if someone already asked this, but in the most recent AP, a sixth Planar Dragon, the Edict Dragon, was added. This is really awesome but seems to be a major departure from what I'd previously understood was a hard and fast rule of five true dragons per category. Was this a change in design philosophy, was it planned all along or did I misinterpret this "rule" somehow when it was discussed in great detail around B6? Can we expect more Planar Dragons, or even the possibility of new additions to other dragon families, in the future?
That'd be neat. One of the creations from back in the day that we never saw ever again was a demon/devil hybrid that had ridiculous saves and resistances.
Ah, the Cathezar. Half marilith, half chain devil. One of my favorites from way back when. ^_^
(It wouldn't surprise me if you were thinking of something else, of course.)
We know it's Leviathan now, and that he's Tane, but that still doesn't really necessarily tell us much. Leviathan has been interpreted in media as everything from a dragon to a whale to a Prince of Hell, so it really remains to be seen exactly what his nature is. Fifth Edition just came out with their version of him, and he's a giant water elemental. The original mythology is fairly vague as to what kind of beast he actually is as well. I'd really like to see his art and find out what kind of creature he is exactly.
There was a lot of talk about this subject in the bestiary threads, but due to the massive need to update colossal numbers of 1e creatures for 2e before we're likely to see anything new in the bestiaries, I figured there should be another place on the site to talk about these creatures, not necessarily in relation to the game. This thread is for sharing and discussing any manner of monsters and creatures from mythology, folklore, urban legends, and cryptozoology. We can use this thread as a hub for sharing these creatures, as I'm working on a massive encyclopedia (with nearly 6,000 creatures noted down for it so far), so any creatures anyone can provide are helpful, the less well-known, the better.
Nope. Kaiju are pretty much Material Plane things.
Do kaiju in Pathfinder share some kind of common origin, if they're all from the Material Plane? I ask this, because, unlike most monstrous sub-types in PF, kaiju in media (with some universes, like Pacific Rim, as exceptions) tend to be a motley array of creatures with diverse origins whose only common trait is massive size. There are tons of kaiju in Godzilla, Ultraman, etc. who originate on different worlds and dimensions entirely. So, via the classical definition, a kaiju-sized beast from another plane would still be a kaiju. Therefore, does that mean that Pathfinder has a slightly more limited definition of the term?

Thank you! And especially thanks for providing sources as well.
What are the Chol, Ham Varenti, Garei, Amarun, Stewa Rutu, and Kubot? Nothing's coming up on Google because the name is too short and generic. I'm also not sure I'm finding the same Jiaotu you did, given that Google is telling me it's a fairly standard Chinese dragon and not something that would qualify as an aberration.
